    Im really not sure if i agree about the "Multicasting Death Ward means only the oldest applies." It specifically states you only gain the benefits of the most potent, but doesn't state that the other casts are just "in stasis" so, when the trigger happens (falling to 0 hp), it would trigger all of them, but you'd only receive the benefit of 1 of the casts.

    • @pandanielxd
      @pandanielxd 2 месяца назад +3

      how would it be triggered if it didnt apply??

    • @Tyler.8046
      @Tyler.8046 2 месяца назад +9

      @@pandanielxd They're all running in parallel, no different than bless, the difference is whether a trigger phrase of "When the target is first reduced to 0 hit points" triggers only the oldest version or all versions simultaneously and the most potent version is applied. In the case of Bless, it comes down to whether the reading is "the most potent version applies when you cast a new version" or "when you perform an action that triggers Bless, all Bless are triggered but you only receive the benefits of the most potent"
      Ultimately, this feels like a situation where a DM would have to decide based on their interpretation and impact to the table. If a player is trying to exploit rest casting to get 10+ lives then that is something they need to discuss with the DM. However, if the DM and table are ok with the reading, then more power to everyone and the table has to be ok with the enemy exploiting the same rules.
      Ultimately, it seems gimmicky and unfun for everyone in my opinion, and mostly exploits ambiguity to make death less impactful (especially considering how easy it is to avoid as is), but to each their own.

    • @AlexM-is6ru
      @AlexM-is6ru 2 месяца назад +6

      I agree, I don't see how you could have death ward trigger without all of them triggering. To trigger death ward you must have a situation where you would be knocked to 0. And if that happens, they will all trigger. Edit: I see the argument against this is "because the effects can't combine, only one triggers." But they aren't combining. They are just happening one after the other. If they were combining, the effect would change. If 2 bless casts combined, more dice are rolled and the result is higher. Your hp being changed to one can't be combined with it being changed to one to make it be changed to one harder.

    • @Tyler.8046
      @Tyler.8046 2 месяца назад +4

      @@AlexM-is6ru 100%, I can see the argument on both sides which is why I think this is something you have to discuss with your GM. I think the biggest thing that sketches me out with the way the spell is written is that it specifically states "The first time the target would drop to 0 hit points as a result of taking damage" which would imply that it's tracking it even if this specific instance of Death Ward isn't what brings you back to higher than 0hp. If they stacked in that way, it wouldn't make sense to add the "first time" qualifier.

    the ray of frost thing makes a lot of sense to apply cause the reduction of speed is because part of the target freezes so it moves slower and obv. if you shoot more ice at it it freezes more and as such can also move slower. I would even go as far as to alow the effect to increase the duration of the Debuff if something that was already hit enough times by ray of frost to have its speed reduced to 0 to the next turn. For example if smth has a speed of 30ft and gets hit 4 times by ray of frost its speed would be reduced to 0 until the start of your next turn and an aditional -10 feet until the start of your turn that follows that. But that would be Homebrewing on my part and also you would need to cast ray of frost 4 times for that.

    Couldn't you stack booming blades then, for the sake of causing damage twice if the target moves 10 ft.
    Example: You attack with booming blade then quicken spell booming blade to apply it twice to the target. So they have 2 booming blades for 1 round.
    The target moves 5ft and takes the 1st instance of booming blade's thunder damage. The target then moves another 5ft (10 in total now) and takes the second booming blade's instance of damage.
    This would all of course work similarly to Death Ward, it works because the 1st instance of the spell ends earlier than the second one. So the second then starts to apply itself to the target.

      Strength drain doesn’t stack with itself as the 1d4 Str damage is separate from the ending condition.
      The attack is instant.
      The effect applies only to the ending condition.
      The reason why all stacks are removed at the same time is because of the effect (end of short or long rest) lingers until all stacks are removed.
      Eg:
      You have 3 stacks and you end your rest.
      The first stack triggers and is removed.

      On the subject of Ray of frost, I think it’s balanced. The casting time is 1 action so either one character is burning a resource to fire it twice in one turn, or multiple characters are spending their turns using ray of frost instead of other spells. Considering many, if not most, encounters consist of multiple weaker creatures, the whole party using their turns to lock one creature down while the others close in is suboptimal.
      This does give me the idea though, of using Ray of frost in the solution to a puzzle, the players are given a scroll/wand/item of Ray of frost and a powerful construct is closing in moving 20 feet a round while they’re trying to get through a locked door or collapsed rubble. Clever use of the item or having a party member who knows the spell would allow them to hold the construct back (while the item has charges left) giving them much more time to remove the obstruction

Therefore if you have 7 death wards then when you drop to 0 all of them go, aha time to activate and you lose the effect, then the game says nuh uh only one effect takes place

Theoretically this should mean that each instance of AoA should apply damage to the attacker once. As I said I think most DM's would smack this interpretation down, though I might allow you to combine all of the bonus hit points, just not get more than one instance of AoA damage per turn.

      RAW this doesnt work. You can’t have more than one source of Temp HP. If you have temp hp and gain more, you choose which temp hp to keep. You can stack multiple Armor of Agathys, but they wouldn’t do anything because of the “while you have these [temporary] hit points” clause. You only have the temp hp from one armor of agathys, so the remaining ones do nothing.

The "Combining Game Effects" section in the DMG gives an example explaining how the continuous fire damage from the Fire Elementals Fire Form trait doesn't stack. Like the slow-down from Ray of Frost, this continuous damage does not have a proper name (it is caused by "Fire Form" but the condition of being on fire doesn't have a name) and isn't a spell with a spell duration. Temporary hit point spells like Armor of Agathys, on the other hand, usually end when the temporary hit points are gone. What about Aid then?

    The most obvious thing that would aid in how to rule stacking spells is how Temporary HP works.
    If a spell grants temp hp, for the sake of simplicity the higher amount replaces the lower amount. In other words when that higher amount is depleted the lower amount doesn’t reactivate.
    This replacement behavior is the same as if all temp hp was active at the same time and any damage you take was subtracted from every source of temp hp you have until no temp hp remains. Meaning death ward stacking should be defunct.
    For fortune’s favor the core rules needed a caveat that identical spells that can be ended early for a benefit are all ended at once with only one the player chooses taking effect. (That is if you don’t like spell stacking.)

    I get interpreting a 2nd lvl bless as more potent, but the bonus is a d4 no matter what. So if the bonus of 1d4 is the same wouldn't the most recent spell effect be counted?

      Well, if the effect/bonus is the same anyway, then it doesn't matter which spell caused it, does it?

      @@derDrache1988functionally yes. But I was trying to make sure I read the rule right. It doesn't define "potent" as spell levels but does reference bonuses as an example.
      You're right though, it would not make a difference either way.

    How would Polymorph apply? Different forms are clearly different potency, but it's had to say which one is "more potent." The T-Rex is higher CR than the Giant Ape, but the Giant Ape has more HP, and the goldfish is clearly the most potent debuff of the three. Would you pick and choose elements from each form to keep (such as the highest HP and the highest AC) or do you keep the most potent form, whichever you decide that is?
