My aunt and uncle live next to fish springs Marina on watauga lake, its cool to see someone publicly show how really awful it is since it isnt really being fully shown on a large scale, ive spent a lot of my life around and on that lake and was born in carter county, thank tou for your efforts to show and make a difference looking and helping.
I do not live in NC, but have had the privilege of enjoying the incredible scenery of this beautiful region many times in the last 40 years. My heart breaks for those who have experienced the devastation and loss of this historic tragedy. I am amazed at the human spirit and tenacity of those who are still in the fight of search and recovery, after all these weeks. They are angels among us.
In New Zealand we still have a young father missing after our floods of Feb 2023. He was possibly swept out to sea. And your debris field looks like ours did in 2023. We also had beaches full of debris. We had bridges and homes destroyed by rivers that now look tiny and peaceful again and incapable of such torrents. Our sympathy and blessing for your searching.
When you think of how deep that tractor is buried that's just a clue on how deep any remains could be. .very sad. It's most definitely a permanent burial ground because there would be not many reasons to ever dig 13 feet ...that tractor was imbedded at least 12. Feet ..I'm shocked..
I watched a video where the markers were at least 20 feet above the man's head. He explained to the young lady talking to him that SAR's removed every last bit of that dirt in a recovery. Someone had also left behind one of the poles used to probe where the dogs "hit", the pole was well below the tape in the tree.
My heart goes out to all the folks who are affected by this tragedy and not a day goes by that I don’t think about you all out there!! How blessed I am that my youngest daughter and grandson were not affected seriously by this although they have made their home in Shelby, North Carolina! BUT all things are possible with God- maybe He chose you and called you for the task for this very reason… to do the impossible and bring Him glory. As a volunteer body recovery worker for almost 30 yrs, might i suggest getting a large magnet fishing magnet. Use it to drag and find metal under water. Human bodies and all organic matter like to get snagged and build up around/underneath the metal. If you let a cadaver dog smell the magnet, they will yea or nea that spot. On dry land if you use a probe to penetrate the piles you can smell tge odor yourself. Sad job, bless you for doing your part.

I cannot imagine the hearts of all of these families who have missing loved ones and lived through this tragedy to be aware. The depth the tractor of the semi was buried makes reality set in. Some may never be found. How devastating for these communities. I pray the survivers are given peace and closure in spiritual ways if physical ways can not be met. Anyone who can go on through daily life without thinking of these people and having the ability to help but doesn't, can not have a heart. Our government is heartless cold people.

I think it's hard for people to feel compassion and understanding when their home is gone, the national media has turned a blind eye, they're denied assistance from their insurance company "sorry, no flood coverage", and FEMA has denied their application 3 times in a row.

People had a chance to keep the frequency and extent of extreme storm events manageable - as they used to be. This will happen more and more, and yes victims will become angry - rightly so, but it's not until most people experience it that they care, when they should have cared earlier. So for those warning about these things the anger may seem misplaced and too late and maybe just a way of deflecting blame. I'm with you that this needs to be in the news more but big oil/politicians/main stream media do work together to keep the sale of damaging oil based products going. That's where all the money is. Oil/politics/'free' news (and arms so even the right wing folk that chased FEMA off with guns have some part to play in the cover up).

Too many to really account for tbh. You can consider the missing persons list but that’s not always accurate because you have to be reported. Many folks live in Hollers and their whole lives and families could have been killed by flood water in those small areas no one will really know.

Nope we never saw one damn national guard, 15 minutes from that lake , was first wife and I kayaked 4 years ago ... Took us 3 days to get down just from house to road... Hugo survivor here too .. 30 k national guard over 30 years ago , debris cleared 5 days , literally had curfew, PRESENCE!!!! still completely wrecked here , Lucky to be alive but have now been traumatized by what I've seen ... And smelt.... Wtf ???? Rutherford county McDowell line off 211 near bat cave , old fort ect .... Damn it!!!! Still forgotten, sad to be American , never ever thought I'd say that ????
Consider they don’t know where to start. These debris piles are so thick and deep. Its insane. They also have to be careful of contamination. It’s not that they’re clueless they’re most like not from here and unsure where to start making an impact. Why don’t you go down and clear some debris?

I've been keeping a list of confirmed missing we come across and try to talk to the family first. We have of 2 from Relief and Green Mountain, 1 over in Newland, and 2 in Jonesborough, TN. I do hear from locals they suspect 100s if not 1000s but for some reason if there are 100s or 1000s, they would be people without a single family member or friend who would notice they're gone and report them missing. I heard a rumor of some immigrant workers in Jonesborough being swept downriver from where they were camping along the river but when I looked into it I found out the immigrant workers were not only fine, they were also going into the destroyed communities near the washed out bridge and stealing things out of the debris. I guess there was a news story about a few of their arrests. So, I don't know about the huge number. I've only confirmed single digit numbers in several counties.
so sad that the mainstream storyline has forgotten these people. Hope that all who are still missing are found and that their families can get some sort of closure. Condolences to all.

The debris field being so deep is just awful. I fear many of the missing will be lost forever 😢 Please take precautions,respirators,boots and gloves..you can get very sick from the debris. I am so angry that you have been without military help,its crazy! Where is the help?

We live 20 minutes drive from there. We have been there several times. One of the things that made such an impression on me at the visitor center/museum was the lists of peoples belongings. We are SO spoiled. I also heard about the river there and its deadly reputation.
Thank you and everyone else who is trying. The scale of this is such that fifty years from now little kids poking around in the river silt will be finding human teeth.
I suspect that a dredge operation would start finding things and victims. Does anyone have a clue about how many people are potentially lost in that mess? My fear is more than I'm ready to hear about.

Can anyone please tell me what is the true total of lives lost? And how many are still missing. I ask because I live in NZ and it concerns me that these people are still out there and it’s heartbreaking. The magnitude of this is huge. Having lived through a natural disaster myself, which destroyed my city and killed 300 and hospitalised 2,000. Homes were without power for days and days and no running water or sewer for months, we had thousands leave town they just couldn’t handle it and so many homes, thousands were unliveable ! It’s like a bomb goes off and you are dazed for such a long time. I worked at the make shift trauma centre after the earthquake and I’ll never ever forget what I saw and what some people went through and survived after hours being trapped. The shock lasts for weeks, it’s really hard to explain until you have been through devastation like this. I had ptsd after my experience, it’s going on 13 years now, but it still haunts me when I think of that day and the following days. Nature is so much more powerful than us and you just never know when you could be tangled up in its horror if she decides to put on a show. These poor poor people. Praying for all affected by this. Thank you for going into help, I know it’s so frustrating not knowing how to help or what you can do to help. But you’re there and that will mean so much to this community bless you. A beautful place. Very respectfully documented thank you for sharing x❤
Thank you for what you do. If you had a way to dispose of the debris, like shoes, that you check that would be one less thing for someone else to check. It may seem like a needle in a haystack but it adds up.
As a journey starts with one step, the cleanup will start with removing one stick, one log, one car, or one trash bag. It may take several generations, but it can be done. Never give up.

I dont know how many weeks it is since this happened, but I know I was so concerned. I have been through flooding and fires. The trauma takes a long time to get over. The fact that so many are still missing is heartbreaking. Prayers for all of you. From Australia.

There is so much metal in those debris the signals would be nearly continuous. Nice idea but not practical.
Aside from all the other metals surrounding, nails, screws, various all mixed together.

I live in Julian, NC. My heart aches for all in NC & TN. I can not imagine😢. I know everything is forever changed for our beautiful mountains, rivers, animals and the People. My deepest condolences to everyone. Our church has made several trips to try and help out. I just want to bring everyone home and hold them close. 💕🙏🙏💕
Nope we never saw one damn national guard, 15 minutes from that lake , was first wife and I kayaked 4 years ago ... Took us 3 days to get down just from house to road... Hugo survivor here too .. 30 k national guard over 30 years ago , debris cleared 5 days , literally had curfew, PRESENCE!!!! still completely wrecked here , Lucky to be alive but have now been traumatized by what I've seen ... And smelt.... Wtf ???? Rutherford county McDowell line off 211 near bat cave , old fort ect .... Damn it!!!! Still forgotten, sad to be American , never ever thought I'd say that ????
Sadly the few videos I saw of NG on equipment was like watching clueless people on heavy equipment. No place to be learning to operate equipment.
Consider they don’t know where to start. These debris piles are so thick and deep. Its insane. They also have to be careful of contamination. It’s not that they’re clueless they’re most like not from here and unsure where to start making an impact. Why don’t you go down and clear some debris?

This is so sad and heartbreaking. Thank you all for the support you give to all that are in need. Gosh to drive by that every day for months etc is just reliving the trauma all over again. I hope that they get areas cleaned up sooner than later. Prayers and hugs to all of those affected.

I've been keeping a list of confirmed missing we come across and try to talk to the family first. We have of 2 from Relief and Green Mountain, 1 over in Newland, and 2 in Jonesborough, TN. I do hear from locals they suspect 100s if not 1000s but for some reason if there are 100s or 1000s, they would be people without a single family member or friend who would notice they're gone and report them missing. I heard a rumor of some immigrant workers in Jonesborough being swept downriver from where they were camping along the river but when I looked into it I found out the immigrant workers were not only fine, they were also going into the destroyed communities near the washed out bridge and stealing things out of the debris. I guess there was a news story about a few of their arrests.
So, I don't know about the huge number. I've only confirmed single digit numbers in several counties.
so sad that the mainstream storyline has forgotten these people. Hope that all who are still missing are found and that their families can get some sort of closure. Condolences to all.

The debris field being so deep is just awful. I fear many of the missing will be lost forever 😢
Please take precautions,respirators,boots and gloves..you can get very sick from the debris. I am so angry that you have been without military help,its crazy! Where is the help?

We live 20 minutes drive from there. We have been there several times. One of the things that made such an impression on me at the visitor center/museum was the lists of peoples belongings. We are SO spoiled. I also heard about the river there and its deadly reputation.

Can anyone please tell me what is the true total of lives lost? And how many are still missing. I ask because I live in NZ and it concerns me that these people are still out there and it’s heartbreaking. The magnitude of this is huge. Having lived through a natural disaster myself, which destroyed my city and killed 300 and hospitalised 2,000. Homes were without power for days and days and no running water or sewer for months, we had thousands leave town they just couldn’t handle it and so many homes, thousands were unliveable ! It’s like a bomb goes off and you are dazed for such a long time. I worked at the make shift trauma centre after the earthquake and I’ll never ever forget what I saw and what some people went through and survived after hours being trapped. The shock lasts for weeks, it’s really hard to explain until you have been through devastation like this. I had ptsd after my experience, it’s going on 13 years now, but it still haunts me when I think of that day and the following days. Nature is so much more powerful than us and you just never know when you could be tangled up in its horror if she decides to put on a show. These poor poor people. Praying for all affected by this. Thank you for going into help, I know it’s so frustrating not knowing how to help or what you can do to help. But you’re there and that will mean so much to this community bless you. Thank you for what you do. If you had a way to dispose of the debris, like shoes, that you check that would be one less thing for someone else to check. It may seem like a needle in a haystack but it adds up.
As a journey starts with one step, the cleanup will start with removing one stick, one log, one car, or one trash bag. It may take several generations, but it can be done. Never give up.
