Wow! This might be the first channel I’ve watched with so much detailed info about climbing technique! I’m excited to put them all in practice on my next sesh! Awesome contents! Thanks a lot!
Glad I found this and your channel, best video on drop knees I've found! It might show up in the search better if drop knee is in the title, I only found it by a recommendation after watching a few others and it showing in the recommended
Loved your demonstration with the force plate! Seeing the numbers makes telling the difference between the moves much easier. I'm not a beginner anymore but still very early in my climbing career (8 months and counting) - learned so much here, thank you for this in-depth explanation!
Thank you so much! I wish I had a whole bunch of fixed force plate holds to highlight the differences even more so…maybe in the future! Appreciate it, very applicable to climbers of all grades!
Another banger! Thanks again for all the effort you guys put into these, the attention to detail is obvious and appreciated My favorite cue comes from John Kettle's (awesome) book. Exercise 21, "Knee-Throw": "Rotate your knee back [out] (opening the hips) then throw it hard [in] and down. Allow your hips, trunk and shoulders to spin after it, extending up to the target hold as you rotate." I like to imagine the drop-knee movement itself is generating momentum toward the next hold, then I feel like I do the whole movement simultaneously and dynamically.
i am quite muscled, sprinter physique, i have been able to do hard climbs inverted using shear strength and limted technique. the drop knee is such a powerful move, like the person commented, also provides a strong base for the next move!
Absolutely fantastic breakdown. I'm just getting into bouldering and I've watched a bunch of videos to try and figure out proper techniques to help with my efficiency, which is *terrible* atm, and while I've had ideas of what to do, within the first 5-minutes of this one there was so much valuable, clearly explained information I feel like I should be taking notes. You're fantastic at breaking it down, and maybe the first that clearly points out the wrong techniques too, *and* shows the problems with them. Thanks a lot 😊
Thank you so much. Many more technique drills coming your way. Just trying to get the right filming and editing team together to do them justice. Appreciate your comments and support. Let us know if you have any questions.
Thank you so much for the video, the best explanation of this move I've ever seen. Really appreciate it and I hope we see more climbing techniques explained in depth like this.
Thanks! Your technique videos and the ones from Dave MacLeod are always the ones I get the most out of. Your explanations and breakdowns of fundamentals are just that good. Will try the kilter route tomorrow for my technique session! :)
Super helpful info. I especially liked your Force Production Piece that showed the efficiency of the drop knee. Always curious how this sort of movement translates to boulders without many foot options. Maybe that's where your videos on heel and toe hooks become more relevant. Great stuff!
Awesome work again! Love the specificity and clear guidance. I'm wondering if you could spend a bit more of the video on both the kilter board and a standard wall. Maybe also show us what to look for when trying to find relevant holds to use for the drill on a standard wall. Most viewers probably won't be in a position to set up a drill board so providing more of the guidance in a context that we can replicate could help? Thanks again!
Yes, we can absolutely do this!! Definitely great and what I normally do, but wanted it to make complete sense and not deal with gym music/people etc. thanks for the idea and support!
Thank you so much, we really appreciate it! Yes, we will be doing some vids on dynos, deadpoints and dynamic movement across boards, normal climbs and on rock too.
Fantastic lessons, such a clear explanation of a crucial skill! It would be fun to climb at one of the Spot gyms with both of you sometime soon. My sons minds would explode 😂
We can absolutely do this! Thanks for the recommendation. We’ll do the same for the step-through and flagging vids coming soon. Thanks for watching too :)
Robin O'Leary? More like "Robin O'Cheery" 😂Informative video with a lot of good takeaways. Question: Does engaging the core + glutes and driving hips into the wall impact the force on the pulling hand? I'm curious how it stacks relative to other methods presented @ 24:00.
Hahaha, I’ll take it!!! Good Q. To be honest every move is going to be far more effective when activating your core. The drop knee really prompts you to do it, so it feels “easier” when performing as you have to push with both feet in the opposite direction. Think leg kickbacks at the gym that people do to grow their bum lol. Thanks for watching, we appreciate it
Super video thanks to you two, could you as a tall climber on occasion make a video of advice dedicated to the tall?(more than 6.1) Thank you from France
Awesome video! How do the hamstrings play a role during drop knees? Should you be activating your hamstrings a pulling in a bit before twisting into the drop knee, or should you be using the hamstrings to pull yourself in after you're already twisted into position?
Thank you so much! Great question. The hamstring is activated so much if properly engaged. If drilling, you may get cramp. That will give you an idea of how much it’s used!
Definitely a technique that creates force on the knee. Many, who’ve had knee ops (ACL, MCL, Meniscus etc), are less keen on the drop knee as a result. Certainly places a lot of torque through the joint.
Great video! One small comment is that I found it kinda hard to focus on your words with that particular music / the fact that it felt quite loud. Otherwise very solid, informative piece
What Kilterboard-Layout is it? How do I find the drill in the app? When through different layouts, searched for ROAP… or ROCUP… Nothing. Can’t find it… Any help? :)
This is a 16x12 layout. We thought it was on the OG 12x12 set-up though. ROAP Dropknee is what you should search for though. Let us know. Thanks for watching
Maybe I'm misunderstanding the kilterboard app, but it makes me select a location first and then you see the climbs just for that location. So for example, I had to select the Longmont, CO location to find Pontiac Perfection from Alex's earlier video.
I went to the gym today and managed to read from below a very high drop knee which solved my boulder problem. I saw a lot of climbing videos but this is the very first video that made me realize something applicable in my gym and connecting the “dots” because the theory behind was explained so well - thanks to both you and hope this kind of video will keep coming.
Thanks for watching!!!! Someone else said this @kiltergrips can you check please? I’ve looked on 2 x 12x12s (Denver and Dallas) and it’s there? ROAP Dropknee (v2 btw)

Absolutely! I can change that. Originally it had dropknee in, but it wasn’t getting traction. Will adjust again

Great to hear! Glad you’re a DK user and thanks for watching!!!

I couldnt find it too on the 12×12 Kilterboard. I have set a very similar one called "dropknee copy".
Are you on a home wall?

Brilliant, brilliant lesson. Thorough and well explained, thanks a lot mate!

Great video, really helpful to see the comparison between drop knee, step through, rock over and an explanation around when each is preferable!
Thank you Simon, much appreciated. Yes, more comparison and technique videos coming your way soon too. Thanks for watching
Such an informative video! Thankyou so much! Really great explanation and examples, can’t wait to try and apply it

Another fantastic video. Really clear instruction that is relevant to all climbers, beginners and experienced alike.
Thank you so much! Exactly. We coach V13+ climbers that are “too” strong and rely on strength more than finesse. This lesson is for all!
Great, informative video. Very detailed!
Excellent, glad you liked it. We'll be doing more in this style more frequently.

What about the force on the twisted knee. Which is the leg that should be doing the force to protect the knees.
Definitely a technique that creates force on the knee. Many, who’ve had knee ops (ACL, MCL, Meniscus etc), are less keen on the drop knee as a result.
Certainly places a lot of torque through the joint.

Thanks for the feedback. We tried to make it just low in the background, but perhaps didn’t need it at all. Thanks :)
Unless you have hip mobility like Margo and climb front on.
Yep, we’ll be covering a video on this. Like you said: IF you have the mobility, it’s the most efficient
