    You might notice this video isn't as edited as usual. That's because the sceduale was tight for this video to happen in the first place, and I allways proritize writing over visuals (also also because I dropped the png youtuber style 😂) I have 2 HUGE vlogs that I still have to finnish, so I'm sorry if you feel the decrease in quality deeply affected your viewing experience.😮

    I think a big reason as to why Charcoal goes unused besides society is because Charcoal has multiple steps to getting it, you have to mine a tree, then have to get a furnace, then have to get fuel for your furnace, then you get to actually make Charcoal. Meanwhile, Coal only requires you to go underground and mine, which is something that Minecraft players were gonna do anyways, with the added benefit of getting other resources, ones which are seen as significantly better than coal.
    This not only displays the little value which coal has, but also says something about our society, as it shows that humans are inherently lazy, because even if a method is vastly more efficient than another, the less efficient medium may still be used because it's easier to do in the short-term.
    Thank you for coming to my Ted-Talk.

  • @clarkour

    This is really interesting to me because, as a modded player, coal is far more useful but equally hard to get while charcoal is infinitely renewable and can often be fully automated. At its least useful, charcoal is FAR easier to obtain at a faster rate, like in most modern modpacks with Create. At its most useful, like in Tekkit (or any pack with IC2) where coal was needed in mass quantity for solar arrays, charcoal is literally required in early-midgame if you don’t want to mine for like 30 hours a day.
    Also I think it’s important to note that one of Minecraft’s core design philosophies is to implement things that would make sense to players and to make things easier. The implementation of auto-crafters isn’t in spite of them already existing, it’s BECAUSE of them existing. Mojang probably didn’t add them until literally just now because until now nobody figured out an “exploit” (unintentional design result) to auto-craft.
    Also also I have actually no idea what that Dream quote meant.
    I think it’s important to remember that the job of game designers is to give players the illusion of choice. Yes there is a producer-consumer relationship in Minecraft, but there is also the designer-player relationship that comes first. LEGO Star Wars putting a line of studs that guides the player forwards while not restricting open movement wouldn’t be considered “controlling” or an abuse of power in spite of the fact that going down the stud path gives you currency, points, and most likely progresses you through the level more than taking in the scenery. The goal of Minecraft is to make the player believe they have infinite possibilities. If the player believes this, Minecraft is successful. If you want to talk about the illusion of control, especially from a sociologically-informed perspective with an eye towards predatory influence over consumption, Mojang already has the mob vote to make fun of :3

    • @K-Lowe
      @K-Lowe  7 месяцев назад +1

      The dream quote was added early on in the writing process and got more disconnected as it went on, but I felt it still was sort of relevant.
      Dream and most critical do the same actions but one was reprimanded "because he's the minecraft guy"
      People say dream is in the wrong and moist critical isisnt because they are inherently biased. Maybe it would have been better said early on? Idk

    I mean.. you made an interesting point here but this is just so irrelevant. Like sure charcoal is probably underutilized... so what? I think that's OK though. If I had to list all the underutilized features in the game we would be here all day, ant then we haven't even talked about the useless stuff... Anyways I will name a few for example regardless: Wooden Tools, Leather Armor, Potion Brewing, ect. IMO the dumb policies like one block at a time or not removing already existing features really messes the game up. It's not that big of a deal as I can relatively easily 'fix it for myself' or at least adjust it to my liking with mods and datapacks, but it's disappointing to see so much lost potential!

    • @K-Lowe
      @K-Lowe  7 месяцев назад +1

      Yea, that was kind of the point.
      WHY is charcoal so irrelevant? While the info is pretty useless under the pretense of a block game, one of the core reasons behind it can be problematic. I see your point, though. After all, the video is ridiculous 😂

      @@K-Lowe The conclusion that you have come to, that people just forget about it; I don't think that that's the case. Or at least I personally am not using it because I forget it exists, but because chopping trees is a chore I think finding other convenient fuel source to kickstart the process is frustrating, I don't wanna mess around with stack sizes to get the exactly right amount of saplings or sticks. Also the fact that you have to wait for it to smelt and you also have to 'prepare it' also contribute to it. Consider this, if you had to chose between finding a surface cave and simply mining a vein or chopping down a tree, wait for enough leaves to disappear so that you can replant it and then smelting the usually odd amount of logs that comes with clear efficiency loss wouldn't you chose the first option? The flaw of charcoal is simply that it's messy and inconvenient to gather. Well, regardless.. you were clear that this is not to be taken seriously, so sorry for this whole thing.. I just.. I dunno, I felt I had to clarify my standing or something... Well, have a nice day!

    Personally, I think its bias from older versions, since Charcoal torches used to be less bright then coal torches, therefore worse, so when combined with everything else worse about charcoal, older players just avoid it like the plague, and newer players are literally never told it exists, ether by other players, or the game itself.
    (Which, ya know, feeds back into the whole "illusion of choice" thing, thought i don't think it was intentional)
    Its sort of a death spiral feedback loop for charcoal.
    There's also the fact that outside of the *very* early game (like, we're talking the first hour of gameplay), You always have enough coal.
    Like people make a big deal out of efficiency, but thats only because everything in minecraft is usually so *inefficient.* You want more iron because you need more iron. You want more emeralds because you need more emeralds. You want more wood because you need more wood. You want more sand because you need more sand.
    No one ever makes a leaf farm, though. Because you don't need more leaves. You dont need more spider eyes. You don't need more tropical fish. You already have more then enough, so no one tries to make it more efficient to get.
    And thats the deal with coal; you have enough, so Charcoal is never needed.
    For crafting and early-to-mid game smelting, there's always enough to go around. And for lategame smelting, a kelp farm can be created in a literal snap of your fingers.
    Charcoal is genuinely the one thing in minecraft you could completely remove and if you didn't announce it, i think it would take a few days to a week for people to notice. Even beetroot would be noticed faster, because for as bad as beetroot is, at least there isnt a crop called "root" that's way faster to find, easier to use, and can create soup without a bowl.

    • @RoseNoire
      @RoseNoire 7 месяцев назад

      Hi ! Sorry for bothering you, but when you say "Charcoal torches used to be less bright then coal torches", where do you hold that information ? There has never been an item called "Charcoal Torch" that would give off less light. The crafting recipe for the torch uses coal or charcoal interchangeably, kind of like you can craft stone tools with blackstone. I play the game since 2011, but I checked the wiki and the Discontinued wiki and I couldn't find the information you are mentioning.
      When I play, I use charcoal all the time and end up hoarding coal like a silly person. That's how I play though. But if charcoal happened to get removed from the game, you can be certain I will notice and be peeved about it. lol
