Dragonflies roost in trees, enjoyed the video 👍🏻have promised myself to make the effort to get out of bed early and give early morning a try.
Yep, I spotted one sleeping on a branch of a blue spruce at 7:30am near a manmade pond.
I'll have a look next time.
Very good video and so informative, thanks. Like the images as well . Do you have a video using a 600mm (or similar) lens for insect photography?
Please keep the videos coming. Cheers!

Lol when you make a dédicace to the MacBook of Micael 😂😮 unlucky Micael !
awesome video Stewart it so good to have you out in the field, doing what i do, it so easy to relate. The lenses i use for my macro and close ups are the olympus 60mm macro and the Leica 100-400mm on my EM1 mkIII, awesome combo so sharp. but i will be adding at some point the Olympus 40-150mm 2.8 pro with 1.4 teleconverter.
Good stuff
I really like your videos. I always manage to learn something new or get ideas for subjects. I was wondering what flash diffuser are you usng?
Well Stewart, I use 40-150mm f2.8 (sometimes incl. the teleconverter 1.4) and the 300mm f4 and set the camera to pro capture mode.
During the night, they seek shelter from predators and cold temperatures as you know. Most dragonflies spend the night near the location where they are active during the day.
40-150mm 2.8 pro is a great lens and it works really well with the 1.4 teleconverter which at 150mm would equal around 420mm ish in full frame 👍
Thank you.
There probably isn't a m43 camera that can justify its price, but the 150-400 has 0.71x (FF eq.) magnification when the built-in 1.25 TC is engaged.
1000mm equivalent and almost 1:1 macro might be ideal for dragonflies
Stewart, I enjoy your videos very much. Thank you for your hard work. Regarding dragonflies: Where do dragonflies sleep? Dragonflies find sheltered spots to wait out the hours until morning. Since their mobility is reduced at night, they hide themselves as best they can under leaves, in shadows and in deep plant cover to minimize the risk of being eaten."
Thank you, I'll take a look next time I go out.
We enjoy the videos Stewart. I have been shooting Olympus for years and absolutely agree that the Olympus 40-150mm (80-300) 2.8 pro with 1.4 teleconverter (up to 210mm (420) F4) is an incredible lens kit. I could not recommend it more. If you don't need that much reach, don't forget my favorite walk around lens, the Olympus 12-100mm (24-200) F4 Pro with built in lens stabilization. The lens IS works with the camera's IS. I think that I get 7 stops of IS when using my OM1 Mark3 and it has 1:3 macro capability. Both of these lens have been out for a while and you might find a good deal.
Hi Stewart, can I ask what you're using for EXIF data overlays? Or are they a manual thing? Thank you
Do you still use the raynox dcr 250? I've never used a raynox before and I'm wondering what is the best one to get for my canon 100mm macro lens.
Yes I do, I used it in the video.
Where’s your CygnusTech Raynox lens holder? It’s a ring that velcros to the side of the diffuser roof and your Raynox clips on to it…..
I don't believe Cygnustech do a lens holder, I k now AK diffuser does.
Very nice, i watch it later !!!!!!
I am new to the Olympus system, I am a Nikon shooter, but was looking to buy a lighter lens for Macro, then I saw your video where You got your Olympus and I got inspired. So I also did that, and boy, do I love that camerasetup? I got so exited that I went out to buy both the 40-150 2,8 Pro and the 100-400 5,0-6,3. And both telezooms are quite capable of macro, or should I say "close-up"?. But nothing beats the 40-150 2,8 for insects like butterflies and damselflies - It is so sharp I could'nt believe it when I first saw it. I use it with a close-up +2 filter that sits in one of those filterholders that you can fold down when it is not needed (cant remember what it is called in english) so I can set up the filter with a fingerswipe, and take it down again just as easy. I tell You, that combo is a beast. I do not come to close so I scare them, and I am close enough to fill the frame. Even the 100-400 is quite good at it, but not as sharp as the 40-150.
The 300 f4 is sharper
@@simpedros4766 any sharper than the 40-150, and you will cut your eyes looking at the images...- and - well . the 300 is twice the money.....😀
Good to know, I'll have a look at the lenses.
90mm macro lens from Olympus is brilliant.
Great video. For dragonflies in flight I use the OM-1 + 300mm Pro f4. It works really well. The 300mm is 1:2 macro with a close focus distance of just over a metre. The OM-1 bird af grabs the dragonfly very well.
Of course with this you have to upgrade your camera as well.
Micael catching strays 😂
#1 is to turn off the back touch screen. For Olympus/OM System, 200 is the base ISO and best one to use for the best quality. I love my Olympus 100-400mm.
Good to know.
Ha I watch your channel and michael's so it was funny hearing you flip him a little crap lol.
It needed to be done lol
Brilliant :)
Thanks mate.
When you stack / bracket with that kit does the shutter speed drop to a max 1/100? Or can you get 1/200 ?
I can answer that for You: 1/50'th
@@carlkristensen8398cheers. So yeah makes sense om1 does 1/100th.
Sitting in long grass here in Australia, is a little risky. It seems like there's always some animal wanting to attack you. But any bit if you're allergic can be bad.
But rarely happen
I ned to visit Australia!
Olympus cameras are very good at sealing, I've washed my camera and lens under a tap,a mate dropped his into a river dived in and is still working to this day
That is very true but my video gear is not.
Great video as always!! I recently learned that pets should not go into natural lakes & ponds (in the US) as most get an ongoing dose of tick & flea preventing meds that can harm the fish, frogs, turtles, dragonflies, damselflies, etc. Makes sense.
The dog walkers don't care, same as the dog are off the lead when deer are around.
@@StewartWoodArt :: Not surprising. Love your videos!
I like this relaxed unscripted video. I also can't help but sympathize with your issue of dog walkers (and may I add bicycle riders too). And mentioning Micael Widell's MacBook story just illustrates the youtubers fraternity and reminds me no less than John Lennon's immortal words:
"Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A *brotherhood* of man"
Thanks Stewart. You are truly an inspiration to me
Having no possessions doesn't seem much fun in Lou Reed's Sweet Nuthin
New lens would also mean anew diffuser!
I do not use raynox . I preefer NiSi 49 and 58mm close up lenses.
Loved my Nisi, until it got stolen.
40-150 f2.8 pro, would be my choice
Nice
Sorry spamming your comments but re: dflies in flight. 300mm f4 is prob the best for the om system but I’ve had as good shots with Olympus 100-400mm. Obviously the 150-400 will do it too but you need to sell a kidney for that lens.
Yeah, no kidney selling for me lol
The Red insect is a Cardinal Beetle.
Thank you.
Dragonflies roost in the trees adjacent to the pools.
Thanks you.
Soldier beetles - Cardinals are more red
Thanks.
