I think the only thing that makes someone "irredeemable" is not wanting to change. Anyone has the potential to do better. But answering the question in regards to Akechi directly, I think the outlook genuinely isn't that terrible. The fact that Hereward exists as a synthesis of the two shattered aspects of himself he couldn't reconcile previously, the fact that he's more honest about his emotions to Joker (and even unlocks both Protect and Endure, gameplay-wise) and even to some degree, his attitude towards the PT...It actually feels like the engine room was a very reality-breaking moment for him, more so if you did his confidant.
My sister and I believe that he'd definitely need some kind of external assistance similar to what you see in people with depression. Involving other people and being part of a group (not the PT; but other people who are in similar circumstances) would be a very important one and Persona Q2 actually proves just how much good external group support does him. Guy needs to take care of plants. It sounds silly, but it's in these kinds of things where you see growth.
I think that one mistake people make is assuming that helping Akechi is somehow not holding him accountable, or that alternatively he needs to "earn" forgiveness. I don't believe either is true. He can always do good (community service, maybe, too?) as he evolves, and he doesn't need to be forgiven by anyone in order to have the right to "redemption". That's up to the people he's wronged and has nothing to do with his own personal decision to improve.
Phew. That aside, the editing in this video is absolutely godly, by the way! Really fun and engaging! I had quite a few really good laughs in this.

"guy needs to take care of plants" reminded me of a program they have in some places where they'll give pets to prisoners that give them something to take care of and a reason to stay out of trouble. They get really attached to their animals and it helps reduce their chances of reoffending in the future, so like I think the plants thing could really help someone like goro. I genuinely find this pathological altruism to be sickening. Nobody gives a shit about regular, decent people who struggle with mental health issues, depression, financial issues, health issues etc., but we must somehow devote all our energy to treating vile murderers and rapists with silk gloves? I'm of the belief that part of the Akechi hate is in part of the West not truly understanding the severity of Akechi's backstory of being a bastard child born from Shido's affair with a sex worker resulting in him and his mother discriminated because of it leading to his mother killing herself out of shame, making Akechi an orphan. Lady Virvilia's video of Akechi being a throwaway child in Japan is pretty insightful and explains his popularity over in Japan as it is very relatable. The West call it "daddy issues" cause being a bastard and orphan don't carry the same stigma as it does in Japan unless you're part of some strict religious group.
Probably why Adachi is popular aside from the incel shitpost memes, is because his issues and background are very much widespread in the world for the demographic of adults who play these games.

It makes him seem even less subtle as a character because of the emphasis this mechanic places on him, placing him on level with Morgana and Igor for story impirtance and progression. Giving him his own events that aren't tied solely to the story's progression makes him feel a lot more like his own character and not just a semi-obvious traitor trope that is required to magically manifest and insert itself into main story moments and nowhere else.

"I can sympathize with him(Adachi) more than I can with Akechi."
Yes. That is the point of Adachi. Adachi is an everyman made into a monster by the negative effects of isolation and feeling trapped by a society that doesn't value it's citizens enough outside of just saying "grow up, work, pay taxes, and die". He's a horrible person, but he is made to be a sort of cautionary tale against going through life and only looking at the negatives while denying the positives because they fail to make up for how generally shitty the world can be. That is a trapping that everyone falls in to at some point in their life at least once, even after playing P4 and understanding it's messages. He is made to be the monster anyone can become, and thus someone that you may curse and condemn, but also understand.
Akechi, meanwhile, isn't like that. He's, for one, a kid. Adachi was an adult. Already, expecting Akechi to have a life, backstory, and view point as fleshed out as Adachi is not only unrealistic, but showcases just how arrogant/ignorant some of his haters are. Secondly, he's never actually been able to forge his own identity. His identity is shaped by the people around him. Multiple times in the game he's like "this thing is popular so I need to check it out so I can give my opinions on it". He doesn't do very many things because he wants to, but because he knows other people either want or expect that of him. He is, like Adachi, a cautionary tale. He's a warning to not build your identity purely around the thoughts and opinions others have of you. When all that is torn away from him, all the popularity, all the outside influence, and he's faced with people he can be true towards, the Phantom Thieves, he's practically just... blank. He has his hate for Shido, his paradoxical desire for Shido's approval, his rivalry with Joker, but other than that? Self loathing, depression, an unhealthy obsession with the value placed onto him by others, and a lot of other stuff that means the kid needs more therapy than a Lovecraft protagonist.
Akechi isn't meant to be sympathetic in the same way Adachi is. If he was, he would just be Adachi.
I don't want another Adachi. I want a character that can stand beside him as one of the best written antagonists in JRPG History. Does Akechi meet those standards? I think so. He wouldn't be so well loved by the community if he wasn't.
Besides, Adachi was hated at first too, and I fucking guarantee it that most of y'all dumbasses were on that bandwagon as well, ya God damn hypocrites.

I personally don't think we're even meant to sympathize with Adachi since yeah, we understand what led him to become the bitter, negative, isolated person that he is during P4G but he's also like that due to his own choosing, he let his circumstances mold him as a person due to his own biases and never tried to fight back against it like Yu does. In a way, him and Akechi are very similar in that regard, which is why they're both such amazingly written characters. People just tend to wrongly assume that just because a story presents the context of something or someone bad like that, they're also trying to justify said thing, which is not the case at all.

    @Dorked Год назад +89

So many people really miss the nuance of Akechi's character, and while it's okay to dislike him, folks get so nasty about it the moment someone shows any attachment to him. For starters, the fact that being a bastard child in Japan is MISERABLE due to the society's collectivism and value of familial ties. Children in the foster care system are horribly treated. Top that off with his mother taking her own life and then him falling into Shido's hands and Shido himself admitting he instructed Akechi on how to use his power, and Akechi being manipulated by a god... the deck was stacked against him from the start. Obviously, he still did terrible shit, but he was basically put to task by Shido, and I think people overestimate his actual kill count (it's not hundreds- it's probably closer to a dozen or so, which is still awful, but people love to exaggerate). I also feel like people who think he shows no remorse... really didn't pay attention. He looks genuinely sad when he asks Morgana about changing hearts, admits if he had met Joker years ago, things could've been different, and does save the PT in Shido's palace and begs for them to change Shido's heart.
Also, the dude tried to turn himself in- if he didn't regret anything, why would he do that? He also could've taken an easy out- living in a reality where the people he killed are okay, where nobody is aware of his crimes, and he can have a fresh start, but he chose to embrace reality knowing that he might not make it out of there alive. There are convos in mementos that also show he's at least civil for the PT and grateful that they stopped Shido, and he's p. cordial with Yoshizawa. People love to hype up how unrelenting and crazy Akechi is- but in the end, he's very aware of what he's done and isn't asking for forgiveness. Plus if we take true end at face value, he's being escorted by guys in suits- it's entirely possible that he intends to turn himself in again. We won't know unless Atlus follows up on that.
Also, Adachi is a grown ass man who generally had full agency in his choices, whereas Akechi bit off more than he could chew as a kid and basically got stuck in that situation and grew numb to it. If anything, Akechi is more comparable to a child assassin or solider than a serial killer. Even if he had gone straight for Shido, Shido has powerful connections, and given that the men who benefited from Shido were still after the PT in the end and still pulling strings after his change of heart, the moment he turned against the hand that "fed" him, he'd be utterly screwed. He put himself into a situation from which there was no means to escape, with a frankly stupid plan. Made terrible choices and likely came to regret it FAR too late, and even in the event that he's alive (the devs strongly hint that he is if you max his confidant in the official guidebook (?))... I don't see him being content to just act like nothing happened. I don't think anyone would, and he'll have to live with that guilt for the rest of his life if he sticks around post-true end.
To like Akechi is not to pretend he did nothing wrong. Even if he was being used, he still caused immeasurable pain to people like Futaba and Haru, was willing to kill Joker to appease Shido/for his own reputation (even if I doubt he actually wanted Joker to die if you raise his confidant), and gave many people psychotic breakdowns/shutdowns at Shido's behest. But something P5 and Royal try to communicate is that despite EVERYTHING, Akechi is perhaps Shido's greatest victim, and you can understand his plight without forgiving him, as the Phantom Thieves express.
    * Not saying it's wrong to like or prefer Adachi. As another commenter said, he is a cautionary tale. But I personally think the two fit wholly different niches and both of them are influenced by the Japanese culture these games originate from, which a lot of westerners don't consider.

When I originally played P5 (base version, in 2017), I wasn't super big into analysing characters or getting into a super deep story. So in the end, I was already super exhausted with the length of the story and couldn't really grasp or understand Akechi's character at all (the promotional material and the intro showing that you were betrayed by one of your partymates also didn't do wonders for Akechi in my book either).
But then, your playthrough of the Persona games showed me a lot of little details the devs hid in the game, both in foreshadowing and emotional development and writing of the characters. Sure, the game misses the mark here and there at times, but your commenting on it all really helped me understand where they came from and what they were building up towards.
Ultimately, I think you need a lot of empathy, emotional intelligence, and/or to have been in close contact with these kinds of emotional trauma to really understand Akechi as a deep and complex character, instead of summing him up as double-agent anime murder boy.

What so many of these comments seem to miss is nuance. What could he have been if he'd been dealt a kinder hand in the beginning, and that's where, I think, Chrystaahhl's emotional response comes from, the lost potential he could have had. The art of creating a great villain is showing how they got to where they are now, and Akechi is a great villain because you can see how he got to being the man he is in P5.
Could he be redeemed if he survived? Some might argue he's too far gone. Semester 3 in Royal suggests that there is a degree of empathy buried beneath the cruel, bitter armour, but you could argue that'd be Joker's wishful thinking made manifest in the supposed 'perfect world'.
Akechi would have to unlearn the depth of defenses and coping mechanisms he'd built up over the years; the selfishness he used to protect himself from the unjust game. It may be possible, but it may be his mind is too cracked to be able to successfully go down that path.

Always loved Akechi since vanilla and even more in royal, definitely my favorite fictitonal character of all time.
I personally find it really weird that hes so controversial with people because I never really see that sort of intense hatred for characters like him in other fandoms? Like plenty of animes and videogames have assasin/serial killer characters, some way worse than Akechi, and barely anyone will bat an eye at them. I think its due to just the nature of the persona games themselves and how the main characters are usually pretty righteous and have stricter morals than you see in other series. That and I lowkey think half of his haters are there cuz people dont like how people ship him with Joker so often lmaoooo (and the fact that the game seems like it does too sometimes). Kinda funny but also sad that people cant take a step back anf just truly analyze his character for all that it is.

I remember before royal came out a lot of people didn't like him because they thought he was a horrible twist villain (cuz obviously he's the traitor, soon as you meet him you know) and so he was extra hated for what seems like bad writing. I do think Royal fixes this though because it makes it really clear that Akechi isn't even supposed to be a twist villain. The whole point of his confidant is that both sides know the others secret and sus each other out by going on weird rival dates and sharing backstories. After royal I definitely don't see this complaint as often. Now the main thing that annoys me is when people forget that he didn't kill all those people by himself. He was literally coerced into doing so by his extremely powerful father when he was young and vulnerable. He's also less of a serial killer than he is an assassin but people who hate him don't usually acknowledge that because the term assassin sounds cooler and less serious than serial killer (and even then both terms can't fully describe the situation Akechi was in). Anyway, just some of my observations that I find interesting. Sometimes I kind of like that he's so controversial just because it gives me more opportunities to analyze his character by thinking about how other people critique him but that's just me. Loved this video, was pretty silly funny haha (and I also cried over Akechi so it's not that weird). :)

    • @freilotte

Well maybe it's because most of persona characters are pretty straightforward and say explicitly what they're feeling, the game tells you what they are, what's their motivation and shit so it's easy to understand them without much thought. But with akechi you have to actually think why he is doing things that he's doing and put yourself in his shoes. Perhaps persona fans just don't bother to understand his character i don't know that's how I see it

    • @caoisekamay1175
      @caoisekamay1175 2 месяца назад +1

@@freilotte yeah ur on point. The thing about Akechi's characterization is you need to piece it together from different sources. There's what he says about himself, what Shido says about him, what Yaldobaoth says about him, and what the phantom thieves say. The biggest indicator that people dont get him is the fandom-wide assumption that he wants to kill Shido when he doesn't want that at all. The revenge is just half of his motivation, the other half is about wanting to be loved and acknowledged. That's why Shido's cognition of him says "you just wanted to be loved" and why Shido's shadow said he controlled Akechi by using praise. Akechi is insanely love-starved and the adults in his life exploited that. And he's not uniquely evil because the phantom thieves acknowledge they couldve ended up like him if they were less lucky.
Honestly as much as I wish Akechi's survival was confirmed instead of Atlus dancing around it, it does hit hard knowing that you CAN save him (the true ending) as long as you put in the effort to understand and empathize with him. Joker was the first one who ever did. It shows how far simple care can go to save someone. And isn't the story all about rehabilitation over punishment?

The people who judge someone as a person based on what fiction characters they like are wild to me. There is almost always a reason someone likes a character even if it is vain or simple. I personally think it is a sign of immaturity to just judge a person who likes a character and not understand why that is. I feel like it all comes down to why someone likes them. If someone likes Akechi because he was some edgy murderer bad boy then that would be one thing. But a lot of people like him because of the way his overall situtation could be seen in someone's life. Someone probably doesn't know a teenager who is a hitman on a revenge quest to kill his father. But they might know someone who has everything they need to turn their life around for the better but won't. Who refuses any help you offer them. He just won't begin the work to take steps to recover from his trauma. People may sadly see that in their own lives.

Knowing what it's like to have someone who's gone off the deep end and seeing how Joker interacts with Akechi (he's like the friend who doesn't agree or go against Akechi, just kinda stays by his side as he spirals) I'd say yes, to an extent. I think that he really can only be redeemed for as far as he wants to be saved/ change. The question about Akechi being redeemable is thought provoking to say the least. My 2 cents here are: He can find redemption but in his own way. As you said I don't think looking for therapy or a healing retreat would make sense for him. Our murdery boy need to figure out if he sees on himself the possibility to change. Maybe after being in touch with the PT's and their resolve to steer their own lives and move on, that could ignite the will to do the same for himself. After seeing a world that he can work together with someone and also be his usual self I feel he could get there. One of the core matters here is: I don't think he would put himself in self pity for what he had done, just acknowledge his past was driven by his birth circunstances and revenge, and now he has an open canvas to move his life in the direction he wants to.
Akechi is indeed that friend that is out of your reach to help, the best you can do is hope for his own resolve and time.

They change hearts instead of killing because they believe people can change. If they approached Akechi as if he were an unchangeable, irredeemable monster then that would go against the themes the story had. They didn't forgive him, they were giving him a chance to change, showing that they'd be there to support him when he (assumedly) turned himself in. It's really kind and powerful. A few of our party members had lost family members to him, and they still wanted to give him a second chance. That's who the Phantom Thieves are, they want society to change based on self responsibility and accountability, not by brute force.

I don’t know if “redeemed” is the right word, but I definitely think post-Royal Akechi has the potential to become a better person-and, if the cut scene is anything to go by, he will. Time (and therapy, lots of therapy) would do a lot to help him heal and come to healthy terms with his past and what he’s done.
Even in the game itself, you can see there’s moments where he becomes self-aware, where he recognizes that his hatred for Joker is founded on his own flaws. But at that point he’s not ready to actually confront those issues, which is why he still fights the Phantom Thieves before (faking) his death-he runs away, in other words. He absolutely could have swapped sides then and there; but being the toxic tragic character we all hate to love, he can’t handle the compassion being shown to him.
This might sound crazy, but Akechi reminds me of Gollum. They’re both self-loathing, ruthless, obsessive little gremlins who when shown mercy and pity are of two minds on how to react.

I think a way for Akechi to redeem himself after Royal (assuming he is alive) is that he should live for himself. Not for anyone else's approval or living up to society's expectations of him but to genuinely live for himself while still holding on to morals and thinking of others similar to the phantom thieves.
I would also say that in his journey for redemption wouldn't be so that people would see him as redeemed and good again but to redeem himself in his eyes and to show himself that he is worthy enough to live his own life. Maybe he still can be Smug-kechi and can still be insane here and there, but he wouldn't let the burden of his past dictate his future actions while also remembering what he has done to remind himself that he can be better.

To answer the question you asked (if Akechi could be redeemed after the events of Royal); I think it definitely depends on what you see as someone being "redeemed". Is it to make up for everything he has done? Then no, since the lives he did take is something that's impossible to take back or make up for. A human life is worth more than that. However, if it's "enough" for him to /want/ to make up for it and does things to become a better person, etc, then yes, as long as people think that's enough. As for my opinion; I don't think anyone can make up for taking another human life, but it will still be "enough" if they try (although it also depends on the situation, of course, as well as my opinion having less weight than those involved).

I'm not too sure Akechi can redeem himself. The entire arc of Royal he gave everything to be able to return to a reality where he doesn't exist, where he's dead, and I don't know... it makes me doubt his mental stability, he pretends to be a strong boy but he's too damaged to move on , and those moments of madness when he fights are nothing more than an outlet for that very thing. If he's still alive, I don't know if I know a good thing for him, to have to walk away from the only friends that were with him and start over with all that trauma and guilt of what he did. A bit difficult (?)

I just played through Persona 5 Royal (my first Persona game) for the first time last month, and I’ve been watching tons of playthroughs and reactions to my favorite bits. Akechi has become a top 3 favorite gaming character for me and I too got emotional. I look forward to playing the rest of the series especially since 3 and 4 are coming to game pass next month. Anyway, super fun being able to check it this series for the first time and share it with other people. Hope all is well 👍

Adachi had his own arc in P4U with help fighting Sho, as while not content with the world he would still hold onto his old bonds (while not admitting).

Not gonna lie, to see a Akechi returning to the group and seeing how everybody would be not only shocked but also with mixed feelings about it, aspecially Joker, would be very amazing and maybe having him like not wanting to be with the group at first but then you discover that he wants to find a new graps on life and find a way to let his past behind him, but he stil is filled with to much negative emotions that he would accept the groups acception for him. So at first he would help out of the shadows, because he is nearby and just wanna do his part in the most Tsundere way possible ( but not as akward as Morgana did) but slowly getting called out and pulled into the center by Joker and co. with him starting to accept that this could be what his new life can be.

If he were added to the group I’d want them to remind me every single second about the horrible things he did and not let him off easy kinda like Zuko when he joined Aang’s team in avatar. Personally, I think that Akechi is a bit all over the place, which fits him and is what I think the writers were going for. He's a chaotic mess that's made horrible mistakes in his quest for approval and revenge. But in his heart of hearts, I can't really see him as being purely evil like Adachi which is what I think the phantom Thieves latch on to, including the ones -- especially haru -- that he's wronged. It's a question of whether or not there's hope for him, which towards the end of royal, implies that there is, baggage and all. So I don't think it's wrong to like akechi, or perhaps more accurately, to WANT to like him in spite of his horrible deeds.
But then there's the flip side that can't get past that he indeed murdered a lot of people. But they aren't necessarily wrong to think that either and, interestingly enough, I think that there's a good chance that Akechi would probably side with that side of the argument if he were listening in on this lol.
I do think it does cross a bit of a line when people criticize you for liking a character and finding some empathy within him. He's a purposefully complicated, conflicted, and controversial character even amongst the phantom thieves. They don't forgive him but have hope for him therefore the writers want the audience to feel the same way. So it's not weird or unnatural to feel that way as well.
Anyways, don't know if you or anyone else made it this far, but those are my two cents from someone who just recently no life'd royal and strikers lol..... I have a problem

8:09 so true! The girl my brother was dating from freshman year of highschool until earlier this year was like that. I'm not going into too much detail for the privacy of all parties involved, but her parents weren't great and her when COVID got their senior year it worse where she was bouncing around friends houses to avoid her parents and eventually mom and dad let her stay at our house and she slept in my room.
A lot of stuff happened and she has a lot of mental health issues because of past trauma from a variety of sources, but she seemed to be healing at least a little. She also got really close with me, my other 2 little brothers, and my parents. I still consider her to be like a sister to me. Earlier this year things got worse in ways I'm not gonna specify. My brother is a very loyal person so he was willing to stick it out at first, but she pushed all of us away and did things that hurt all of us. The only one no one has verbally attacked directly yet is me.
Despite everything I still miss her. I really did want to help her and still do. Even though she hurt people I love and lied about my family and that's just not acceptable I still want good things for her. And that's just me, I can't imagine how much it hurt my little brother. I should be angry, but honestly I'm just sad and disappointed in myself even though I did everything I could realistically have done without making my own mental health issues worse. It's just frustrating not being there to help someone you care about because they won't let you be there for them.

I don't think Akechi necessarily "can be redeemed" because I think thats a really subjective concept in this instance. I think its fully possible for him to grow as a person and become healthier, and I think its possible he'll go on to do plenty of good, but I'll never expect people like Haru or Futaba to grant him redemption in their eyes. I really like Akechi and Joker's dynamic in royal, I spent so long after beating the game still thinking about it, and I want to see him continue to grow and create bonds that are all his own, but I don't think I as an unaffected third party would ever truly hold the right to say "yes, he is redeemed now."

  • @Gameorama91
    @Gameorama91 Год назад +4

For your discussion on if Akechi can be redeemed. I think...maybe? But he SHOULDN'T.
I'm someone who doesn't think every good or sympathetic character NEEDS a redemption. And honestly I feel like Akechi himself wouldn't try for any kind of redemption. As we saw in Royal, he kinda just...accepted the path he took in life and the outcome. He was willing to be in jail for his crimes, and even to return to what they assumed was his certain death on his own terms.
So I guess it comes down to what do we mean by "redemption". If its him taking responsibility for his actions, then yeah, and he already did that honestly. If its him surviving and just, trying to live a normal life and move past everything, I dont think he should, nor do I think he would personally WANT to do that.
Thats what I like about him. He's honest with himself. He knows he did terrible things, and was 100% willing to accept punishment for it, whether that be imprisonment or even his death to help the Phantom Thieves actually accomplish what he couldnt.

Most of the P5 party join the theives because of wanting to get back at someone.
Akechi is the same, but in an insidiously intelligent way.
He doesn't just want to get back at his dad, but also the society that shaped both himself and his father, and tries to cause as much pain to both as possible.
In his mind, it's a win-win situation: either he completely destroys society as it is, or he dies, and can't be hurt anymore.
But he's voiced by Robbie Dayton, so all is forgiven

I can honestly say I never felt sympathy for Akechi. He showed no remorse for murdering people (the train conductor at the start, Futaba's mother, Haru's father), was a liar and a fake for most of P5/P5R, and even seemed to enjoy killing. Being an orphan wasn't an excuse for what he did, and I have no idea why anyone would even think to make that argument. Akechi's supposed "redemption" in Shido's palace (confronting his shadow self), appeared more like a self-serving way for him to ensure the Phantom Thieves would get to punish Shido, not a way to "save" them for altruistic means.
His re-appearance in the Third Semester and entering Maruki's palace was also seen as a form of redemption for some, but to me it just came off as him being stuck in a "dream" he didn't want to be in, and so again he chose to team up for self-serving reasons. He still showed no remorse for his crimes.
The only reasonable argument I've heard for why people feel bad for him, is that some malevolent god (Yaldaboath) used him in some sick cosmic game (much like he used Joker) from a young age, and that maybe he didn't know he was actually killing people at first.
I'm sure people will call someone with my viewpoint heartless, as much as they'll call people who cried over Akechi too soft or even misguided.

I only played vanilla and I never hated Akechi, I also never saw him like someone that could be redeemed, when he leaves the Phantom Thieves I started to come to terms with the reality that he was going to die, because that was, in my point of view, the only way his story could go. I had fun with him making his way in the MCs life, but in my view he was going full on to the point of no return and I was ok with that after a while. As much as it hurts, you can't help someone that doesn't want to be helped.
That being said, I absolutely fell in love with Akechi after watching how much you connected with him and listening to you talk about how much empathy you felt for him. Your love for him made me see him in a whole new light and I am very much grateful for that. I'm glad you got to share a tiny bit of your past experiences and I'm happy you love Akechi and all of the phantom thieves.
Also also, for anyone talking about how he's a MURDERER etc, yeah, he's the absolute terrible, but only people that have been in abusive relationships know what is like to love and want to save someone, and love never ever goes away, it just morphs into something else. Being capable of feeling empathy for someone you can see a light on but at the same time knows isn't going to embrace this light hurts. Also he's NOT REAL and is a VIDEOGAME CHARACTER and is WRITTEN to be likeable, you guys will say you didn't root for walter white now? what's next? saying you guys never laughed watching house md? sherlock holmes? hannibal? dexter? the guy from You? please.
