Nice deck, good frequency response. Better caps will make it even better…

It's interesting to see that all the decks that came after 1987 with the transport in the middle have the same chassis and layout as the TC-K700ES and its siblings (TC-K600ES,TC-K730ES). I'm referring to all of the models with designations:
    TC-K***ESL/A/J
    TC-K*09ES
    TC-K*70ES/90ES
that came out between 1991 and 1993 or thereabouts.
These include some of the most expensive decks Sony ever made (although not as expensive as the TC-KA7ES) but I do not like their curvy facade which does not fit with any other components or series made by Sony
This includes the TC-KA*ES and TC-KA*ESA series that came out in 1995lasted until 2000.
Anyway, this is food for thought as one wonders what the significant differences between all these decks are (say between those at the same price level), if there were any, apart from the facade shape and the letters in the model type.
Of course the later models included the Dolby S and HX-Pro capability but did anyone ever use these? I think at some point I decided there was not much of a difference between B and S on a budget system and especially for playback on a walkman so I decided to play it safe and just kept recording everything with Dolby B even though S was potentially superior on a nicer system - which I never had at that time though.

O:15 Can you order the gears to be printed by a 3-D printer (assuming someone can quickly draw up the design) or will the plastic used be inferior/unsuitable?

I am not sure it is possible to print proper teeth with the existing printer’s resolution. However, approach of printing and then mechanically process is feasible.

@@hifirulezzz I didn't realize the 3-D printers' resolution was that low. That is probably disappointing for many restorers. Printing a rough copy and then finishing by hand sounds too much unless the finishing is minimal, e.g. lightly smoothing with fine sandpaper.

can you please tell what's the thickness of that gauge plate?
    and the bar too?
looks like the plate is made out of plastic, or is black painted metal?
    thanks

The Dolby S was great but came out too late for the cassette deck industry, possibly gave it its final short breath of life but it wasn't enough. The greatest mistake was the introduction of the medium in the 60s with their funky aesthetic trends. Had the shape of the cassette been made more streamlined and rectangular maybe the medium would have survived for another decade and would certainly have withstood the CD onslaught better since the CD was inferior to the cassette as a portable medium. The DCC cassette had the shape and dimensions that the original compact cassette should have had from the beginning. But the DCC was an insult to audiophiles intelligence and an inferior medium and was destined to fail from the beginning.
