All Sony after 1985 are sound too digital. Nice but digital.
Hi. I changed the belts on this Sony of mine during Covid: it worked fine, but in the "pause" position the tape got tangled. Now I would like to repair it: I disassembled the mechanics, it is clean and light, fast mode is all ok, but in play it does not work. It seems that the carriage only reaches halfway and the pinch rollers do not touch the capstans, it gets stuck and does not start. Unfortunately there are not even tension values to check on the diagram, do you have any ideas? Thanks.
@croma61able hi, the heads got pulled up by the large black plastic gear. Check that when you assemble the carriage pin gets in the proper position and when you manually rotate the gear head goes up and back down.
@@hifirulezzz Hi, thanks for the reply. Moving the mechanism by hand it works perfectly: this morning I disassembled it again and the famous pins are aligned. Strange that 2 days ago it worked again, but now, I repeat, maybe it didn't have the strength to move the entire head assembly. 6.8 volts arrive on the engine, in play, but I don't know if this is correct...
Last true Sony serie/generation
No, the last and the best was Sony TC-K555esA. That deck was designed when saving money was not on the table yet. Ceramic door, multiple expensive design decisions. Even next gen 555esJ they had to trade off cost and when introduced Dolby S had to offset costs by removing ceramic door.
@@hifirulezzz Absolute right. 950/970/990 or Japan version 333/555esG/esA/esJ were absolute havy, solid, great decks. With sure these serie were inside lot of copper and very good power transformer. 909 is almost 4kg lighter, but stil remind beautifull line 990 ES. Of course I would prefer 333/555 esL/esA or esA than 909 ES. I only focused on technical parameters and appearance, not on internal elements and workmanship. In the case of Pioneer, the CT 939 mk II/CT 91a/CT93 were also the heaviest. Savings were already made on the next series.

@@hifirulezzz Ok. K333/555 ESG=european K950 ES, K333/555 ESL=european K970 ES, K333/555 ESA=european K990ES, K333/555ESA=990ES but with Dolby S. K909ES/K222ESJ is "economical" deck. J for Japan market=Dolby S. If I was wrong correct me please :)

It is hard to answer your question without context.
I have same deck. For some reason, the mid frequencies and high frequencies are not reproduced either during playback or during recording. If pre- recorded tapes are played, the issues remains.
What could be the problem? Any suggestions?
@baredesigns1 High frequencies are not reproduced due to azimuth, but if your deck doesn't play mid range check if the heads are touching the tape properly.
First check the tape pass, head alignment. If these were fine or in factory settings, probably playback head may have worn out or has been degraded due to cobalt amorphous materials
Get some alignment tapes from Alex Nikitin.
He haves FULLTRACK recorded Azimuth tapes (and i belive level tapes too) + he haves an height alignment tape (that haves a 1KHZ frq. recorded between the channels, and u must adjust for minimal output).
The tapes u got are from ebay, recorded on a ZX7.
Not saying those tapes won't do the job, but for the ammount of detail you go in when servicing, i think you could make use of those properly recorded tapes.
Well, I am using the tapes which I trust. These tapes have been verified on multiple decks. Phase tape I made myself and made another one for my friend who has a full set of calibration tapes and he confirmed that phase is good in a full range up to 20 kHz. About head height. If you using full track tape - agree, you have to make minimum values on both channels, but if I will use 4 track tape - I will have to make maximum values for both channels. And I verify every deck with high-quality factory tapes for proper reproduction. I would love to have a full set of original tapes, but it will go far above $1k, I already spent $500 for the calibration tapes I have.
@@hifirulezzz The tapes from Alex Nikitin are the closest if not 100% the same as original tapes.
Хотел поинтересоваться. Считается, что такие гиганты как SONY и PIONEER использовали элементную базу, которая хорошо переносит годы эксплуатации. Получается, что электролиты на этой деки деградировались и вам пришлось их менять? Наверняка вы их померили, что за параметры у них оказались?
Вы можете померять звук? Замена конденсаторов меняет звук. Я очень люблю звук аудиофильских конденсаторов. Вот сейчас перешел с Ничикона на конденсаторы с твердым электролитом. Вот там можно разницу очень даже померять. Намного меньше ESR и ESL. Реально конденсаторы часто все еще держат емкость. Но в данном случае главное же звук, правда?
