I just bought this kit. Looks like theyve changed it slightlyvover the years. All nuts/ screws holding the grided racks together no longer have bolts but now are threaded. Instructions show to assemble the entire 8 foot span first, then lift up and secure, not easy! Overall finished product is secure, I wall mounted one side which took some deviation from the instructions.

Advice for who wants to buy a rack: I made a mistake when I purchased an 8' x 3' and realized that the studs in my house are 2 feet apart and I did not know before I got the rack. It was not possibble to mount the 3 feet width rack, returned it and got the 8'x4'. (None of the instruction videos on youtube mention this issue with 3 feet wide rack)
My mount has been sitting in the garage for a year because when I called around people wanted $400 to install. That just seemed ridiculous. I think I'm going to use this video this weekend. Thank you for sharing will update you on how it goes.
Don't be intimidated. I installed it alone and it was not difficult at all. Just time consuming. Also don't pick a scorching hot day like me. :-)
my issue is finding the studs/joists my studfinder is everywhere, so i bought a studbuddy so i feel better about where the studs are
Thanks for the video. Helped out with my install although my rack was just a little different. Also would have been nice to see more details on how to put the hanging brackets together and how to place them.

Great video, thanks Jon. Any reason why we need at least 6" clearance above the door. Seems like a lot of wasted space I could utilize.
Andy, in my head I was thinking this as a safety precaution. This just in case something ends up accidentally hanging out below the rack. And the garage door managed to catch on it. Just would not want to cause any damage to the garage door. Its too expensive. But by all means if you want to go lower its your rack. Thanks for comments. Jon

When installing does it matter how many studs im using to mount to depending on which direction I'm going?
If I go pararrell to the studs I'm only using 2 studs. If I go perpendicular to the studs I'm using 6 studs.
If your only using two studs for each bracket that's fine. That would give you 6 bolts across 6 studs which would be ample. Make sure you drill pilot holes so the studs do not split and you do not loose any tensile strength.

Are we supposed to use a 3/16 bit for this? I'm new to building, know some things, don't know some things. Aside from that I feel confident, I just can't seem to find it written anywhere which size bit to use for these lags.

Just to be clear the mounting brackets are parallel to the floor joists?
Rob yes parallel The are not long enough to go perpendicular and if they were the would not support much with only 2 bolts in each mounting bracket.

I bought I 3x8 version, and I am setting it up parallel with my ceiling joists. Being that it is only 3ft wide, it does not line up with the joists properly. How would I work around that?
did you ever come to a conclusion I have the 4x8 version and tried to do the same thing but it didn't work out
Great videos! For this one, why did you choose Fleximounts, if I may ask? My contractor confirmed that these ceiling mounted systems are somewhat decent on stick-built homes, but if your ceiling joists are those engineered I-beams, you void the warranty by attaching these things. An engineer at work confirmed. I was going to get these for my brother's new house, but now I'll go with a wall-mounted system.
I'm unclear as to what an engineered I-beam is. Are they still made of wood? The kit comes with really good wood screws and also cement anchors. If your engineered I-beams are composite material the cement anchors would work just as well in those. Just need to be able to drill a pilot hole for the anchors. I'm sure any titanium drill bit could accomplish that. But I guess I need to do my research on the engineered I-beam in modern homes. thanks for the compliment. Jon
Sorry for the slow reply. An engineered I-beam is made from particle board in the center. Some have pine or fur on the edges, some have more particle board. They are not made to carry any load from below in any case. Engineered I-beams are used in about 80% of homes built now. It's great that you drilled the pilot hole (a lot of customers do not when they buy these units) and that definitely helps if you hit the exact center of the beam every single time. Still, it severely compromises the integrity of that engineered I-beam. In time, these ceiling-mounted systems will probably be against code, but until then, these companies will continue to push them.

Note that the customer service from SafeRacks (different company from fleximounts, but they all buy their product from the same Chinese manufacturer) said "they insist that I need at least 2" of solid wood penetration". Even the best engineered joists can never provide that.
Sorry for the lengthy reply, but I feel that there are a ton of people who don't know this and, unfortunately, these ceiling-hung system pushers will not go out of their way to tell people. I went with an American-made product called "Rhino Shelf" rhinoshelf.com after speaking with their engineer.

Thank you for the detailed response. You saved me a huge headache. I bought the Fleximount, but found out the builders for our subdivision said ceiling mounts should not be used in our garages; our warranty would be voided as a result.
What year did they start using the engineered I-beams? My house is 22-23 years old.
My joists are 24 on center. The rack is 36" wide. There is no joist at 36" to attach the other bracket to.. What am I supposed to attach the bracket to on the other side? Brackets are only 20.5 long.
Can you not mount them in a perpendicular fashion to the joists or do the ceiling brackets have to run along the ceiling joist?
Chris, Yes you can mount them parallel to the rafters. Depending on the distance of your rafters. The standard is 16 inches and this will work fine. But understand some homes are made with up to 24 inch rafter spacing and this would work but it would not be optimal.

Guys it took me 6-7 hours to put this together and install it. Hardest was getting the ceiling mounts in by myself. On top of that it didn't come with the right nuts and bolts. I would not attempt this again.

I don't have this much clearance over my garage door. If I hung these same measurements it would be too low. The manufacturer may have different depths?
Paris, I used the maximum length to get the most out of the space. You can easily reduce this with the extensions provided by just using one. or even cutting them in half if needed. But as for clearance, I feel your pain. there is only a foot between my ceiling and garage door. This video was a tutorial for installation and was not done in my garage.
Question? How much space do I need the height of the ceilings to be, or how do I know if these would fit?

You didn't say anything about having to use two joists per ceiling bracket
mist, I ran my brackets parallel with the joists so I only used two. If your going perpendicular it would be impossible to only use one per bracket because you would only be using one screw on each bracket.
What size srill bit? Thanks for the video.
a pilot hole is usually a drill bit half the width of the screw being used.

@@desertrider325 the racks installed in this video are parallel, so yes I would recommend it. Either way works as long as your screws ae n the center of the ceiling truss..

Question, what is the ceiling joist on center measurements? Are these joists 16" on center or 24" on center?
Joel, Every house is built a little different. That's the purpose of the stud finder. In this video my joists were 16 to center. This is not an issue if you run your support rails parallel to your joists.
@@JONSDIY , OK. Ours are 24 center. We were looking to run joist to joist which runs front to back (the opening to attic would be in the way running parallel to joists). In this case what would be a work around? Run a 2 x 4 x 12 and use what to secure to joists?
@@lifirefighter2 There is no need to run a 2x4. Simply fasten the brackets at the 24' mark on each joist allowing the brackets to run perpendicular to the joists. This is why each bracket is 30 inches. It has the distance to cover 24 inch spaced joists. The instruction manual actually recommends it be done this way.
@@JONSDIY ok. But that leaves the center bracket on the center joist. Do I offset the bracket? Is there a way I can send a photo?
@@lifirefighter2 you do not need to offset the center bracket. The hanging arms go in the center of each bracket. Therefore the center of that would put you 48 inches out from the center of the of the next bracket. There would be no over lap. There is actually a gap. See where I have marked the video below.

I have a weird down angle at the corner of my garage. Can I use 5 mounts on joists and 1 not on a joist?
Not sure I understand the question. Will the mount not on a joist be supporting weight?
Correct. One of the corner mounts won’t be on a joist
@@richardfranco9064 I would put the leg at a 45 degree angle and merry it up with an leg that is bolted into a joist. So you would have support but from a secure arm.

The only thing you missed was showing how sturdy they are after everything is tightened. It appears that they are very unstable when you are putting them up. Hence the name “flexi”, I guess?
Not at all. But to argue your point the closer to the celling the shelf is the tighter and more sturdy it becomes. My video shows the full extension of each hanging bracket. and I did not notice any play to cause me concern.
How long does it take to install one of these ?
Alone it took me 2 hours. But it had to be the hottest day of the year so I think that slowed me down.
