      @Ivan Niekipielov Sales are sales. So much geopolitics and other factors involved. Gripen is the best choice for Ukraine right now according to RUSI/Justin Bronk. Which prove that the Swedish doctrine was right. The perfect fighter for a smaller nation standing up to Russia.

      @Ivan Niekipielov even in sales failure the Gripen stands tall honestly. Here in Canada it was the serious contender to replace our legacy Hornets against the F-35, naturally the F-35 won out as Canada itself had already intentions to purchase it over a decade ago (this was delayed due to political BS) and we are a member of the Joint Strike Fighter program

    Top-down ATGMs for IFVs is actually brilliant - makes them much safer for engaging tanks they know are in the area. Clear the way for the infantry they are charged with protecting before the tank even knows they are there.

      They're also fire and forget like the Javelin, and also *might* have a feature that enables launching out of line of sight via data link, that we probably won't know about *if it has it* for a while. It is extremely modern technology, I wouldn't be surprised if it has or will have that ability in the future. And, obviously optional.

    • @williamzk9083
      @williamzk9083 2 года назад +15

      AKERON is by far the best ATGM today. It is fire and forget like Javelin and Spike but also has a fiber optic link which means the solider can fire the missile remotely, from behind cover or even select the target after it is in the air. It's important to not rely on non European weapons. Israel has blocked Spike (called MELLS in German service) from being sent to Ukraine.

      Say no more,... Last year presented new german Main Battle Tank *Panther KF51* from Rheinmetall,... insane beast,... *130mm cannon, 50% higher kill range as todays 120mm standarts in todays MBTs,... 4x Loitering Drones each 1houre flytime inclusive scouting (as seen in this clip).* The 50% higher range and more bite behind the shot is a sigle to punch trough vs todays MBTs. If you take the loitering Drones on top,... and x14 Panther KF51 (a standart platoon) you have *56 loitering drones available* for scouting aaand indirect hit.
      >> On top it has the *Natter* at the back of the huge turret (bc of this huuuge barrel) sitting, which is *against drones,* the turret it selfe is unmaned with an autoloader (new for german tank concepts), which makes 3 total crewmen. But the Turret has also a room for Digital combat which means either 1 of the 3 or a 4th man can operate there solo for Drone operations or as a comander post. This thing,...and it is in the 50ty Tons region unlike Leo & co with arround 70ty Tons, hence the name part *51* as *Ton-range* indicator. Which again makes the Panther more flexible to be used on more different roads, tunnels & bridges instead moving arround he can straight use them.
      Rheinmetall also bought a *huge BEA* portion & with that is the biggest one in the pool.
      >> Rheinmetall did buy the spanish munition production firm: *"Rheinmetall takes over Spain's Expal Systems S.A"*
      >> *BAE Systems* is *bought by Rheinmetall by 55%* rest stays on the British side. Just to get the grip here ;)

      I wonder if this shouldn't be the job or a recce team or command post. There is little incentive in giving additional job and engineering requirements to armor vehicles when this can be achieved safely and from remote. I can see how integrating system to augment the battlefield picture are useful, I am not sure this is needed on something like the kf-51 panther

    • @brokenpotato438
      @brokenpotato438 2 года назад +4

      @@furtivedig yes, as we saw from 2 man tank designs as early as ww2, a tanker (or in this case, IFV crewmen) has a lot of things he needs to keep track of and do at all times and can easily get overwhelmed, which is why 3-4 man designs are commonplace now days. Adding UAV operation to their list of duties would work but giving them even more things to keep track of is a recipe for inefficency. As we see from the war in UA and Azerbaijan, for example, its much more effecient to have an independant drone operator spot targets and relay that information to armored units. (And those two examples I listed are from countries that don't really even have a full battlefield management system for many of their frontline troops. For NATO militaries that do have that sort of capability or will very soon, having independant drone operators doing recce work would be ideal).

Look at the aerospace and production lines for tanks and ammo. The capability is just not there to produce to requirements as the industry has not being sustained by large enough order. Protecting a nation with ~100 tank and fighter jets is optimistic and short sighted.

  • @papparocket
    @papparocket 2 года назад +4

    The CV90 Mjölnir firing a 120mm GPS/laser guided HE and/or HEAT mortar round could use the same drone to identify and precisely locate multiple targets. With the ability to fire 16 rounds in the first minute, it could fire 4-6 mortar rounds in the span of about 15-20 seconds and target multiple targets rather than just one. And those rounds can be a mix of HE and HEAT, so the same salvo can be targeted at troops in the open or in open top trenches, soft skinned vehicles and building with command posts or ammo caches with HE and armored IFV and MBT with HEAT rounds. The 2-3m CEP of GPS rounds is close enough for the HE rounds. And if the drone has a laser designator, the less than 1 m CEP of laser guided HEAT rounds can impact on the thinner top armor of IFV and MBT.
    And if there are several tanks/IFVs, then multiple HEAT rounds fired at intervals just far enough apart for the drone to switch targets. Then in a single fire session several MBT/IFV could be targeted and destroyed before the Mjölnir equipped vehicle needs to scoot to avoid any counter battery fire that might be headed their way.
    Even more importantly it could do all of this from several kilometers away completely hidden behind terrain or other obstacles without having to expose itself to achieve the line of sight that an ATGM requires. Remember, if you can see them, they can see you, and a MBT's 120mm-125mm main gun round traveling at 1700 m/s (Mach 5) is about 6 times faster than your subsonic ATGMs. So while your ATGM might still kill the tank, if it fires soon enough after the ATGM fires, its last act might be to fire the round that kills you too.
    So while the traditional image of mortars is that of an area saturation weapon not at all suited to taking out small, well armored target like a MBT or IFV, the precision guidance kits now available for only about $6,000 each that can screw into the nose of standard 120mm mortar rounds can turn a mortar into a high precision weapon for far less than the $200,000 each for an ATGM like the Javelin.

      There is also the STRIX anti-tank round for the mortar.

    • @papparocket
      @papparocket Год назад

      @@znail4675 STRIX is very cool since it has its own infrared seeker that it uses to guide itself to any armored vehicle within the area it can maneuver to. And it can tell the difference between an intact tank and one that is on fire and hit the one that hasn't been hit yet. So a mortar carrier could fire several at a cluster of tanks and each round will find its own target so in the ideal fire three STRIX round, kill three tanks/IFVs
      But what does the STRIX cost per round? If, as a dedicated round in the same vane as the 155mm Excalibur, I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't cost $50k per round. If so, you are back into the position of saving your STRIX rounds for a "special occasion". With the very low cost precision guidance kits that can turn every mortar round into a precision guided munition the potential to have every shell fired be a precision guided round becomes a cost effective possibility.

    One of the biggest game changers for IFVs and tanks, will be internally operated drones that the vehicle can carry. Normally the main weakness of an AFV is lacking situational awareness, making the vehicle weak to ambushes. And in NATO doctrine, it calls for infantry to cover the vehicles so they detect any hidden ambushes etc.
    But with drones carried by the AFV, an operator inside the vehicle can easily see what is around them from a bird's eye view. The gunner and commander could be looking through the thermal sights of the vehicle, driver is driving, and a fourth member of crew could be responsible for scouting with a drone.

Or does a crewmember just place it on the turret roof while unbuttoned? I assume they carry more than one drone....do they have a dedicated drone operator, because that takes a lot of concentration? Also, how does one reload the missile launcher? Is that done internally by an autoloader, or by the crew, or attached troop element (like the Bradley?) Missile heatprint gave it away first. Flairs makes another randomized heatprint and the smoke is often used to move infantry into position. Multipurpose feature really.

    What is the point of this NLOS weapon then if shots has to be fired in LOS?
