I wish the Odyssey-era membership could’ve lasted longer. That’s a phenomenal album and him and Turner are a great pairing
Plus the great Bob Daisley plays bass on 4 tracks on the Odyssey album. Surprised nobody mentioned that.
Yngwie doesn't deal well with lead singer egos competing with his, so it's no surprise that his stints with Bonnet and Turner were short.
@@kitoyobeni1 it’s a damn shame too
I think mark boals was the best vocalist Yngwie ever had
@@stevenbacakos although I don't completely agree I'm also not gonna argue either 😊
Trilogy Opus Suite 5 still blows my mind every time I hear it. Trilogy is my favorite album by Yynwie. That LP cover is just awesome!
😁🎸👍
The guy is fighting a dragon with a guitar! How metal totally awesome.
The Seventh Sign had fantastic production. I think it's his best production, also great tunes on that release.
Jeff Glixman produced it. He also did Seventh Star and Eternal Idol for Sabbath too
“I’ll See the Light Tonight” video is Mark Boals
yes, but it's Soto on the vocals... Soto got mad at Yngwie for that.
Yup. It’s a very young mark boals. Yngwie talks about this whole thing in his book Relentless and acknowledges how many fans have been confused over the years.
@@matthewjachimiec Yeah, he showed off his new wig on You Don't Remember, so he looked different.
Marching Out is the best album. Heavy and dark. Killer riffs
Eclipse is Yngwie's most underrated album. He could never beat his own first five studio albums.
Facts !
Saw Yngwie in 2019 at a small venue. His band played off to the side with minimal gear while Yngwie had his prop wall of Marshall cabinets. I guess hauling those around is still cheaper than hiring a singer!
Hes an arrogant asshole with no heart or soul. He just plays fast. Hes not even in the samw stratosphere as Eddie or Randy. They knew melody, and texture and had soul. Malmsteen is a mindleas doodler.
@@charlesrambeau519 And who are you ? 😂
Don’t remember an episode with this TRIO”. Awesome show 👍💯
In the "I'll see the light tonight" video, it's Mark Boals on the clip, but it's Jeff Scott Sotto's voice.
In the non-official biography "As above So below" it says it is Yngwies childhood friend from Sweden called Basil. He sings on the swedish gig videos from 1981 and 1982, and he visited yjm in LA for the recording of the video. He was also the singer on the swedish CBS demos of his early work in Swedish Rising Force, that unfortunately was never released. Some of the demos can be heard on yngwies own release of his teenage recordings, a release called "The Genesis". Basil, yngwie and Marcel Jacob were friends from Stockholm.
So glad you guys did this video. I have been a huge Yngwie fan from the mid 80s on and love most his stuff. At the same time I totally agree that the production has been lacking on almost all his albums along with poor artwork on later albums. Glad the Live In Leningrad got a mention, as it has always been a favorite of mine.

Mark Boals was fronting the band when I saw them on the Marching Out tour and Jeff Soto had returned on the tour in support of the Trilogy LP. I saw them twice on the Odyssey tour and both of those nights were noteworthy as well. The first time was two nights Before the Odyssey tour officially kicked off. They played a gig at the legendary Baltimore Metal club "Hammerjacks"! I stood at the front of the stage, which was barely waist-high, directly in front of Yngwie. ( I was able to reach up and touch his pedals) They were so good and it was So Loud! My right ear was ringing for three days :( They were drinking the largest bottles of wine I've ever seen in my life and got wasted throughout the show and seemed so euphoric to be there together. I never imagined they'd part ways so quickly. The second time I saw them was three months later at the Baltimore Arena. Lita Ford was scheduled to open but, right around show time there was a public announcement that Lita had been delayed in traffic and wouldn't be able to make it in time for the show. A few minutes later a stagehand walked out with Classical guitar on a stand. About a minute later Yngwie walked out and played classical guitar for about twenty minutes. He then said he was going backstage for a drink and the show would begin in a few moments. The band came on fifteen minutes later and played a brilliant set! Those were the days!!
47:04 Yngwie said he wanted vocals on every song but the label said no just instrumentals -- he put the two vocal tracks on anyway -- if you listen to the demo of Now Your Ships are Burned, it always had vocals
Odyssey never fails to melt the face, JLT is great and pushes Yngwie to even greater heights, the songs are good but His tone absolutely burns on that one.
"Less is NOT more, MORE is MORE" -Yngwie
Vinnie Moore !
No better way to explain Yngwie's lack of commercial success. Crazy talent, poorly applied.
This says it all, they didn't get it then and they don't get it now: ruclips.net/video/H6_eqxh-Qok/видео.html
@@jimg6570"Crazy talent poorly applied"? That's a brilliant assessment. Sadly Yngwie's talent only really known amongst guitarists
For me: 1- Trilogy- Queen in Love is my favorite YM song.
2- Odyssey- Joe Lynn Turner enough said.
3- Marching Out- I Am a Viking great song.
Sunday Brunch with Rich and Sydney on Monday. LOL Great show very entertaining.
Trilogy for myself as well. FIRE is my favorite. You also listed my top 3
My Top 5:
1. Marching Out (easily in my opinion)
2. Odyssey
3. Trilogy
4. Eclipse
5. Rising Force
1 and 2 are closer for me ... and then it's tough between Eclipse, great production, and Trilogy. Rising Force would be higher than 5th if it lost the two vocal tracks.
Good to see the young girl appreciating old Malmsteen 👍My favorite is the live in Japan double LP :) from.. Alcatrazz
Now we’re talking ! Huge Malmsteen fan 😛🍺
Odyssey was a great, listenable album. Joe Lynn Turner was so good on that one.
My first Yngwie album. Great!!
Nobody mentions the Dougie White albums, 'Attack' and 'Unleash The Fury'. Both very solid Yngwie albums.
I guess now he needs to record an album with Ronnie Romero. Then he will have worked with Every. Single. Rainbow. Vocalist.
@@DinsdalePiranha67 At this point of his career, he prefers to afford no-name musicians and sing himself. In my opinion, the worst lineup ever.
@@martyndunn6337 Which is a shame, because Yngwie's real voice comes through his fingers.
@@DinsdalePiranha67 Right on...lol!
I met Jeff Scott Soto in 1986 and I asked him about his reaction to Mark Beals lip singing to his vocals in the I see the light tonight video. He said it was the longest and loudest he ever laughed.
Not gonna lie, I only own 11 of the 20 albums. However, got a soft spot for JLT, although I love his vocals, the fact he lived 5 blocks from my current residence for many years, I kind of favor him. So , the 1988 album 💿 with Joe Lynn Turner is my No. 1️⃣. I still reach for this album, more than the other 1️⃣0️⃣, I own by YNGWIE. This was @ very enjoyable episode. Thanks to you 3. 👍💯
Welcome back Sydney + Rich Catino 🤘 Malmsteen Top 10:
1- Odyssey
2- Trilogy
3- The Seventh Sign
4- Marching Out
5- Rising Force
6- Magnum Opus
7- Fire and Ice
8- Facing The Animal
9- Attack!!
10- Eclipse
my favorite Yngwie moments is the “fucking fury” moment and the “fucking donuts” moment
My favourite Yngwie moment is the solo in Little Savage. A pearl in his row f solos.
I always think of what kind of an album Yngwie and Ronnie James Dio could have made.
That would be really interesting
Would have been Epic! Go for a Rainbow vibe
Dream On
Marching Out is in my top 10 of all time. I 1st heard Yngwie on The Metal Shop in 1985 and they played Soldier Without Faith and I was hooked.
I loved Trilogy from the moment I heard You Don't Remember I'll Never Forget. I like the first two because of the songwriting and guitarwork. I am going to give Odyssey another go. I've not been a Joe Lynn Turner fan, but you've convinced me to give him another go. I loved the analysis on this episode. I watched this one to learn as I'm not well versed in Yngwie overall.
I ♥️ Sydney Taylor
Yes, she knows her stuff and has a nice style of reviewing and interviewing.
Marching Out has always been and always will be my favorite but I actually think Yngwie has become underrated. People blather on and on and on about all he does is play fast and without emotion. BULLSHIT. Anybody who says this can be dismissed right away about any further musical opinion.
Spot on.
All he does is shred. All his taste is in his mouth. Hard pass.
My fave three are 1. Eclipse 2. Trilogy 3. Marching Out
Marching Out is my number 1. Still have the first two on vinyl. Crystal Ball favourite song. Little Savage favourite instrumental.
And Jeff Scott Soto DEFINITELY improved after he left Yngwie. Especially his work with Tailsman and W.E.T.!
His lyrics too. „... there’s a hole in the sky, don’t ask me why, cause I don’t know“ lol 😂
The list of singers is amazing
I have and love Yngwie Malmsteen ‘ Trilogy’ !!🎼🎤🎸🎵🥁
Thanks for doing Yngwie. I know he's an ego maniac but i love a lot of his albums to death. Eclipse and Fire and Ice being two of my all time favorite albums.
My top 5 would be:
1. Eclipse
2. Fire and Ice
3.Trilogy
4.Odyssey
5.Alchemy
Taken from 2002 interview with Yngwie:
On the fact that he's gone through four different vocalists in 2001:
"Yeah I know. So?"
On lack of input from other members in the creative and decision-making process:
"It's true. My band's motto is 'Yngwie or the highway'. Do you think Leonardo Da Vinci allowed someone who came later to add to his paintings? It's impossible. That's the whole issue. I'm not a typical rock 'n' roll guitarist, nor a simple band member. It's not my way that one of the members comes up with a riff [hums the 'Smoke On the Water' riff] and then the bassist and singer come in and add to it. I write everything!!! If you don't like it, leave quickly."
Take a shot for every Rising Force album with Yngwie on the cover
Can’t at the moment, about to go to work! 😆
Actually there aren't as many Rising Force albums as there are Yngwie's (I believe only 8 are labeled RF out of 20+), so let's take a shot for every Malmsteen album with him or strat on cover. 😁
Claymorean ooh yeah good lookin’ out! Deal. And I’m not at work till midnight. I’ll begin now.

When Pete walks over to get the cds out, it reminded me of that tv series Land of the Giants, that's a monstrous collection.
Rich is that the Infinite T-shirt. 🤘
Whenever he gets a new CD, I'm picturing the warehouse scene at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark.... Not that Pete's a crusty old man.
My all time favorite guitar player ever!! Marching Out was the first album I ever listened to back in 1987 at nine years old, and have been a huge massive fan ever since. I love the majority of his albums big time.
10. Attack
9. War To End All Wars
8. Facing The Animal

1. Marching Out
I don't own Magnum Opus and the later stuff, but after watching this show I'm going to check those out especially Opus.
Magnum Opus and Seventh Sign are pretty awesome.
Thanks Pete. Your guests are wonderful. These rankings are such a great help weeding through the chaffe. Getting multiple opinions from your guests are fun. Cheers Greg
I like Yngwie. I certainly can do without a large chunk of his output (and, in general, his lengthy instrumental excursions bore me to tears, if truth be told) but, like Rich, my favourite album has always been Trilogy (Liar my fav song on the album.) That album is still the one I reach for, almost exclusively, when I'm in the mood to hear some Yngwie.
I can do without almost all of his output. He can play, but for what end? I have more heart and soul under my pinky nail than he has in his entire catalog. Swedish meatball. Hard pass.
@@charlesrambeau519 He can play and write really good songs too! I’m more a fan of him as a song writer rather than a player.
That’s crud under your nails by the way.
Best lineup was with Johansson brothers on drums and keyboards! Although, on Alchemy and WTEAW you have the entire ARK lineup, minus the guitarist of course.
I think I have the answers to the Boals/Soto confusion
Yngwie goes into detail in his autobiography
Soto was out in the middle of the Marching Out tour which is why Boals does the " I'll See The Light.." video (which BTW was shot at the Universal Studios Theme park Conan attraction )
That is Boals in the " You Don't Remember.." wearing a WIG much to Yngwie 's amusement. When he started flaking out Soto came back for the tour. Saw JSS front the band opening for Maiden in early 87 in New Haven
Marching Out for me, closely followed by Odyssey and then ... all the rest of the 80s and the 90s after that.
Rising force, Marching Out, Trilogy and the rest comes as it comes.
Great video. Gonna go see Yngwie this coming Saturday in Newton NJ.
Sidney makes a good point about formatting cover art for LP vs CD. The CD art can suffer because of inherent lower rez ... and marketers emphasize highlighting faces, hair and eyes....so those get top priority for CD reissues and remasters.
I believe Cozy’s last album was Brian May’s Another World in ‘98
Certainly not 1997 Malmsteen. :-) In 1998 he played on albums from Brian May and Colin Blunstone. I think , apart from the releasedate, his work with Blunstone was the last thing recorded by Cozy.
The 1st time I saw and mr malmsteen was1987 for the video you dont remember it was that a very interesting sound and style been a fan ever since seen him 3 times up to NOW manager to get front row for one of the gigs got some very nice white plectrums and a string TOO.. 😁🤘plectrums are in the back of his cds and string is in his 2nd vinyl album
I'd like to point out that these videos are great and they're getting plenty of views but, not a lot of likes. Usually, less than 10% of the viewers are liking them and even less engaging in the comments. Guys, come on here. Pete and the gang are working tirelessly to put out content for us. At least make an effort to show your appreciation. Discovering these videos has been the one good thing to come out of the "Covid situation"! Thank you guys so much. Please keep up the good work!
I remember seeing Yngwie open for Dio, I assumed the singer was Jeff Scott Soto. My hardcore metal head friends were shouting, “That’s not him!” We were confused, it turned out it was Marc Boals. He looked a lot like the guy in the I’ll See The Light Tonight video...
I agree, he sounds amazing on the next record that would be Trilogy...

Also, I cannot believe no ones likes Attack! Such an underrated album, Doogie White is very good, aggressive songs... I really like it.
Agreed! That album is the reason I keep buying Doogie albums...
And in other news, it looks like Iced Earth is imploding.

I saw Yngwie play at the Marquee Club in London in 1985. It was, and still is, the loudest experience of my life. It was ear destroying. A Saturn V could have been taking off next door and he would have drowned it out. God knows how he can still hear, my ears are still ringing. It was an immense gig.
Malmsteen is up their with Eddie Van Halen. Fact.

The fuck if he is
Marching Out
Rising Force
Trilogy
Don't know much else from him, once he brought in JLT I checked out.
The "Ill see the Light" Conan video set was a Universal theme park set. The parts of the video showing non band members are cast from the theme show that did an 'Hourly" scripted run through of the first Conan movie...kind of.
I'm a big YJM fan, and have been since I first got the Steeler album. First saw him open for Dio in '85, life changing concert. My playing style still has a lot of Yngwie/neo classical in it after all these years.
My favs are all in chronological order Rising force until Fire and Ice... after that he is repeating himself or just eating his own tail.
Good morning from the snowy Athens!

5. Fire & Ice
Pete , the Marching Out cover you love is the American cover. The cd you have is the European etc original cover.
Mark Boals is in the I’ll see the light tonight video. Boals toured the marching out tour after Soto left. Then recorded Trilogy afterwards.
Been a fan of Yngwie since 1990/the Eclipse album; and I can say I totally agree with Sydney: Love Malmsteen as a guitarist, but not as a singer. Couple of exceptions though: On A Serious Note, from The Genesis album; and Magic City from Perpetual Flame. 🤔🤔
Top 5 favorite albums:
5: Odyssey
4: Trilogy
3: Fire And Ice
2: Facing The Animal
1: Eclipse
Ho yes !
I had not listen much at all to YM before this year and I am now going trought his collection by time of apearance. I am at Eclipse (1990) and I have been quite impressed with everything I have listened to so far.
This review informs me that it is going downhill for YM during the 1990's and it doesn't improve during the 2000's. Still, I will check everything.
I am 100% in line with you about Odyssey. I have spent two weeks discovering every track and listening to the whole album every day and I love it all.
I too am a Rainbow fan and I particularly like the JLT era therefore it is a real pleasure to have him on this album. I have always known JLT under the shadow of Ritchie Blackmore so I had no idea of his songwriting skills because we all know that Ritchie alone is enough to make great songs. But, Odyssey has a lot in common with Rainbow+JLT so that can just be the JLT factor and my admiration for him grew immensely.
Highlight of the album Cristal Ball ! You all mentionner how much you love that track ;) Rising Force, and others..
I also have a very sweet tooth for Krakatu !! Fantastic instrumental.
Sydney, what's your favourite live album with Joe - Live in Leningrad or Rainbow's Finyl Vinyl?
Alchemy is a really good album, the production is a little off but it’s not bad. It’s doesn’t get much love but Leonardo, wield my sword, asylum are all really good songs with mark boals killing it
Thank You Pete, Sydney and Rich!
I started listening to Yngwie with Alcatraz, Graham Bonnet was the reason after hearing Bonnet with Rainbow and MSG. Bonnet has a way of singing with very influential/iconic guitarists.
Top 5 for me were
5. Facing the Animal
4. Eclipse
3. Marching Out
2. Trilogy
1. Odyssey...love Joe Lynn’s vocals and Yngwie’s playing is melodic and tasteful, while keeping the virtuoso flair.
The rest just don’t do that much for me...kind of interchangeable.
Just my opinion!
Great job everyone and great jacket Rich!👍🌟
The production on his albums with polydor are better than the ones on other lables, the last one (fire and ice) on the Electra label was when production started downhill.
I was lucky to get to know Joe Lynn Turner a bit, almost a decade ago. He was quite proud of his lyrics for Odyssey, and told me he thought Yngwie's own lyrics suck. With that said, I do think Yngwie writes good vocal melodies, even if the actual words are silly. Pete - Ripper only did one session with Yngwie. Most of the songs went onto Perpetual Flame, and then the rest were used for Relentless. Yngwie then filled out Relentless with new instrumentals. Sydney - as a big JLT fan, you really should give Inspiration a good listen. As Pete said, Manic Depression is the only song Yngwie himself sings (though he also does Spanish Castle Magic on a special edition), the rest is JLT, Soto and Boals. I love that album, and besides enjoying his take on the songs, it has possibly his best cover art. Rich - I like a lot of Yngwie's later work, especially Unleash the F-ing Fury. I find the early stuff often sounds a bit dated, so I enjoy the heavier sound he developed (I also have an aversion to Vescera, whether with Yngwie or with Takasaki).

I wish the original Marching Out Rising Force sound would have kept going... Best stuff I've ever heard. Ultimate line-up, ultimate vibe of a sound. Disciples of Hell blew me away and I've never seen it topped, although I do love Trilogy as well. I loved his occult dark classical stuff the most. It was like he was being ridden by the Beast back then. I think it all ended after his Ferrarri crash, when he kind of got scared of the Occult vibes and suddenly felt vulnerable.
The Goran Edman era were the best he did, best backing band and arrangements. Goran could sing his ass off too
Great Show! Really love Yngwie. All of you talking about his covers had me laughing so hard!
Whenever I start to get into a new band the first two things I check are how lengthy their Discography is and how many lineup changes has the band had. Pete you're 100% right on that.
If I look at a band that's got 7-10+ Albums, but only 1 constant member, it makes me reluctant to get into them. Some bands make it work, but often it'll make it take longer to get me into a band, Helloween and Stratovarius are prefect examples of that.

People definitely DID know what Yngwie was capable of. HELLO STEELER. Ron Keel on vocals? Definitely showered his shredding skills there.
My intro to Yngwie was when he was the opening act for AC/DC for the Flick of the Switch tour (the memory might be a bit off). Anyway my friends did not want to catch the opening act but I had read about him and insisted that we go. Great show. And then I when I heard he was teaming up with JLT, I was pumped. I was introduced to Rainbow by the Stone Cold video. I've always been a fan of JLT. Wished they had lasted. Very disappointed when it broke down.
Hi Pete, what about the new album from Yngwie Malmsteen - Parabellum from 2021. Do you think deserves a review?
This was a great light-hearted episode, I think because Malmsteen is such a colourful enigmatic character and definitely the kind of situation where no choice is wrong. Recently got Marching Out vinyl for a fiver!, Fuck'n fiver (that's like 7 dollars).

Mark Boals is on the I'll See The Light Tonight video and 11 years later is also on the carry On My Wayward Son video when Jeff Scott Soto is the lead singer on both songs.
I wish Yngwie would record with Jorn Lande. He did tour with Yngwie briefly, but I want an album!
Very interesting and entertaining conversation. Thanks!
A little context on the Jeff Scott Soto / Mark Boals transitions within the band...Jeff announced at the Capitol Theater in Passaic, New Jersey on July 19, 1985 that he was leaving Rising Force and it would be his last show (last night of the Rape & Pillage Tour). Marching Out, which had been recorded for almost a year but had been delayed forever, was finally released a month later and Mark Boals immediately replaced Jeff when Yngwie was touring to support the new album and opening for AC/DC. Hence Mark in the "I'll See the Light Tonight" video. A year goes by, it's now September 1986, Trilogy comes out and Boals now the official singer is featured in the "You Don't Remember" video, and the band begins to do some club dates in support of Trilogy. Within a month, Yngwie hooks up with the opening slot on the Triumph tour and Boals is quietly replaced with Jeff Scott Soto. Obviously no Internet back then, so this news was unknown to most at the time, so anyone who saw the later shows of that Triumph tour in late 86 expecting to see Mark, probably saw Jeff instead. Crazy year for Yngwie fans.
Hey Pete I was wondering if you like Joe Lynn Turner’s solo work over the last 25 years. If so please do a album ratings.
1. Rising Force. 2. Marching out. 3. Alcatrazz no parole 4. Steeler. I was a great fan of Yngwie, it was like when Van Halen first appeared, everywhere u looked there was a shredder , i don’t get this thing about Turners era, they solos all sound similar, the songs sound like elevator music for headbangers. The cover for Rising Force is great! Looked great on a t shirt and I still have mine from when he opened for AC/DC back in 1985. The first tune I ever heard from him was Now Your Ships Are Burned, which is still one of my favorites to this day. I was absolutely blown away when I first heard him play. I have to admit, however, that as influential as his style became, to me, he was a bit of a one trick pony. I didn’t always keep track of him, but saw him several times over the years. There’s a sameness to what he does that just makes me want to return to those first two albums.

I like the rest as well, except World on Fire, Spellbound and Blue Lightning. Very consistent but varied discography. Long live the greatest guitarist ever! The maestro!
