I had gained a lot of weight in my 20s despite my best efforts. I was always tired and felt scared tho I had nothing to be afraid of. My Dr prescribed antipsychotics and told me to eat better and exercise more. I said I'm too tired to exercise I can't even walk upstairs without losing my breath. He gave me MORE antipsychotics. Not changing the ones that didn't work but added to them. Why? A very long, decades of suffering, story short I have hashimoto's disease, pernicious anemia and iron deficiency anemia. All the antipsychotics in the world would not have helped. I could have died had I not argued and gone to multiple doctors. It's too easy for them to wave a hand and say mental illness, here's a pill. They didn't even run any tests. To say I'm angry is a gross understatement.
Doctors when they learn their patient had mental illness /because/ of an undiagnosed chronic disease the whole time:
I work in a old folks home as a care aid. My residents that have dementia almost always become very delusional, aggressive and hallucinate when they have a urinary track infection.
Hi! I have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a genetic connective tissue disorder. While the disorder isn't autoimmune, because people with EDS have weak, floppy connective tissue prone to tearing or other injury, we're prone to bursts of intense inflammation (including EXTREMELY high C-reative protein levels)...
I've been depressed for about over a decade, and my doctor is only just noticing signs of high inflammation in my bloodwork. So this was weird timing.

I suffer from an autoimmune disorder known as Behcets (it's causing massive inflammation in my brain stem) this was very interesting.
I read a book called The Body Keeps the Score. I can’t recommend it enough.
I have a chronic inflammatory bowel disease and have suffered from persistent depression for years. Been on SSRIs for over 15 years now, and have frequently had depressive symptoms even when I should really be doing OK. Even after years of therapy and medication. It's like something that just doesn't go away. Video made me feel like I'm not just broken in some way and maybe my IBD is playing a role. Thank you, as always, Hank and the team!
Stress can cause/promote mental issues and has also been linked to inflammation. So that could be a common factor.
I feel like there is so many underlying conditions that can lead to mental health issues and psychiatrist (from personal experience) just want to put you on drugs that mask the symptoms rather then treat the underlying cause.
I still believe we ought to take the word "mental" out of it. It's all physiological, whether neural pathways or neurochemistry.

I recently learned that inflammation in the brain may be a significant factor in chronic fatigue syndrome.
I am 24 and have rheumatoid arthritis. Two years ago I started developing inflammation in all of my major joints. I've always suffered from anxiety and depression, but the past year I have been on medication, I have felt so good in my body and mind! Crazy that even without pain my condition could have been affecting my mental health for years!
Of course when you're in constant pain or know you have a long term illness, you're more likely to be depressed and anxious.

This makes alot of sense. I developed/discovered i had hashimotos hypothyroidism and lupus when I was 8. I've also had social anxiety since I was a kid which always grew more severe and have had depression and depersonlization/derealization for years. Its not at all shocking to me that they're linked, especially when drs absolutely refuse to properly medicated people for stuff like this, thyroid disorder specifically
It might have something to do with the medical profession not understanding chronic illness and continually treating sufferers with suspicion or as lab rats.
