      @@FNURULAIENABINTISEBI I don't think you'd want to do that. I keep the water on my tank about half mainly because my turtle sits on top of a small rock so that he can get his sunlight and air. Thats also wear he tends to sleep. Also he does poop alot and cleaning the tank is faster when their isnt too much water to throw away. If you full up the entire tank your gonna be cleaning for an hour or two.

    I'm impressed of most of the turtle videos yours is the most factual so far. I have had my red eared slider for about 2 years now I inherited her from someone who had her for 5 years before that. I wish more people would take the time to watch this because coming from someone who personally has one with only the shell hitting about 10 inches in length that's without the body, she is a whole lot of turtle. Just in the past 2 years I have put in close to 2500 dollars in her maintenance. That includes filtration, lighting, vet visits, food, heat sources, water conditioner, tank upgrades, you name it. They are definitely a pet for life there is no way around it.

    I don't know if I would agree with "turtles being social animals" some are but, RES are better off being alone and dont need company in a tank. I tried to have my RES with another turtle and it was aggressive. It depends on the turtle you have but, I would say turtles are not social animals

    Good, although I wouldn't recommend cohabbing in a tank that size. Cohabbing in the wild works well because there's so much space, but cohabbing in a normal sized aquarium could be problematic. Just something I'd keep a very close eye on. Also, I'd really recommend having decorations and substrate in the tank for enrichment. I have large river rocks in my RES tank that are far too large to consume that he enjoys moving around and digging through, and I'll even occasionally hide vegetables in the substrate for him to search for, it gives him something to do. Also, having some sort of decoration, be it driftwood, rock, etc., that extends near the surface of the water is a good thing to have so your turtle can sleep with his head out of the water. I've actually got two places for him to sleep like that, one under his basking area and one on the other side of the tank, allowing him to chose a warmer side as well as to have a very dark hiding area and a brighter one. Plus, he enjoys scratching his shell on the fake wood decoration I have.
    I'm adding this not to hate on the video, but to provide some extra information to other turtle keepers. Hopefully this helps people, as well as their turtles. Don't overlook enrichment for your turtles, in the wild they have a much larger habitat with all sorts of different things, it's important to try and provide as many different enriching things for your turtle. Of course, to add a lot of items into the tank you'd need to go above the minimum gallonage so they still have plenty of uninterrupted swimming space.

    2:27 Those basking platforms may be what everyone buys but turtles need to be 100 percent dry when basking. Platforms like these believe it or not can result in your turtle developing shell rot and can be fatal if not treated. It is best to build a basking spot yourself with a ramp in which they can climb onto to bask.

      Saitama you’re absolutely correct, not only was my red eared slider still partially submerged while basking, uv light or not if the turtle is in the water it can’t dry. Also my slider picked it apart because she is aggressive and constantly bit at it.( the same one in the video, it’s made of foam)

    • @CalicolRecords
      @CalicolRecords 5 лет назад +4

      Kate Lorenzetti I think it’s best to have them in different aquariums so they can have their own territory. You can also have one of them walking around the house, bedroom or safe place it can walk freely, you can also get a big plastic container, put a nice layer of dirt, sticks and reptile sand so the turtle can bury itself and sleep for two days leaving one in the tank then switch turtle! I do all this with mine every day. ✌️😃

    • @KateLB1027
      @KateLB1027 5 лет назад +1

      DJay Crow How cool! I have never given mine sand to dig in because they both seem to just devour whatever I put in front of them. Not the smartest, my turtles 😂 They have eaten so many plastic items in the tank even after having been around them for years! I suspect that they are bored and do need some time outside 👌🏼 Is reptile sand larger/smaller so that it doesn’t cause problems if swallowed?

    I have a pair of young RES which are about 2.5" long. And I heard that young turtles need a lot of proteins, shall I feed them with raw meat like pork and chicken?

    • @driinun8433
      @driinun8433 5 лет назад +1

      Pork and chicken aren't in their natural diet, so it might not be the best option. I would feed them a combination of live foods (like crickets and feeder fish), chicken liver (it's high in protein and Vitamin E), shrimp, and a high-protein pellet. Remember though, if you feed the hatchlings too much protein their growth will accelerate, causing potential kidney problems when they get older. A sign that this is happening is pyramiding of the scutes, and if you notice this, cut down on their protein intake. They should also have green vegetables, such as romain lettuce, carrot tops, carrots, etc.. It's important to feed them a variety of foods so they don't become deficient in any vitamins. Also, if you feed them a wide variety of foods as a hatchling, it will be easier to get them to eat a wide variety of foods as an adult. Also, feeding them cuttlebone occasional is a great way to provide them with a little extra calcium and bone development.

    I’m hoping for an answer. I took my nieces “red eared turtle” this August, her mother threatened to toss her into a local pond to my horror so she’s now my beautiful baby (5 months). She’s growing and thriving, but she DOES NOT have red, hers in a very light orange. Since I wasn’t the one who purchased her and the place that sold her should be fined and shut down, I’m concerned about the lack of red. Could she be a different breed of turtle? She looks exactly like the red eared slider and I’ve not found another turtle that looks like her except this breed. Can anyone help me figure it out? Am I maybe feeding her wrong? Thanks in advance.

    Is it normal for RES to go in/out of eating phases? The last 2 times in the past 3 years she’s gone on a week fast I brought her to the vet with no luck but buying fish. This time it’s been about 4 weeks and she’s not eating regularly. Won’t touch veggies or pellets, the only thing I can get her to eat is large goldfish and dog food. Is this normal??? Or maybe I’m feeding her too much and that’s why she goes into these phases? The vets have said she is growing great and isn’t obese, the tank set up is ideal, my turtle just isn’t working right 😰

      How old she is? When they are grown ups, it's enough to feed them every second day (my one 15+ I don't know her correct age because the people I got her from didn't knew it either)

    • @kristen4301
      @kristen4301 5 лет назад

      Mr. GotItDone a little over 3 years, she’s about 9 1/2 inches. I heard you don’t have to feed them as often, and switch to more veggies then protein. But she’s been barely interested in any food for the past month. Basking and acting as normal though ):

      @@kristen4301 I'm not sure, the weather can do it too. Since they reptiles they are more active in warm, sunny weather. A new aquarium ( or other change in the environment) can cause this too.

      For the veggies you can soak them in tuna water. Im not sure if that will work for the pellets though.

      Kristen my female slider stops eating when she is gravid( pregnant)She will stay on the dock and bask pretty much all day and some of the night for a few days. Then she get extremely restless. When I see her trying to dig with her back feet on the dock , I know it’s time for her to release her eggs. However, this didn’t happen until she was about 5 years old.

      Yes one of the most popular pet turtle species around the world. They are native to southern USA and northern Mexico but are an invasive species meaning they adapt, mate with other species and can completely wipe out another species population. This is why they are mass breed and it’s illegal to let a captive RES loose in the wild the USA

    In how many days u change the water nd in what quantity?

    • @michaelmorrison1198
      @michaelmorrison1198 5 лет назад

      Normally I do a 30 percent water change every 2 weeks for larger aquariums (roughly 40+ gallon aquariums and 25 percent water change weekly for smaller aquariums ( roughly 38 and under gallon aquariums). So if your doing a 30 percent water change that would come out to syphoning out water till you reduce the level 3 inches lower than it was before you started the water change. For 40 + gallon aquariums the same rule applies, it may not sound like much but if you have a 150 gallon aquarium you will be draining out about 15 to 20 gallons of water atleast!!!!!!!

We live in North Carolina and have been hunting good homes or rescues to give them to. So far we haven't been able to find anyone that would take any of them. They range in size from silver dollar to soccer ball. If you or anyone you know can give some or all of these turtles a good home, please let me know.
