Absolutely spectacular performance by Kissin. My only frustration is that the director chose such odd angles, so we couldn’t truly enjoy seeing Kissin’s hands do their magic. The low angle below he keyboard and also views of the side of his head didn’t do the performance justice. Still, though, such a great performance from one of my favorite pianists!
@@DLCaster Oh, ok. I didn't see it. I just find pieces of the concert! Great information though, really amazing for a pianist to do 9 encores and choose such difficult piece! He was completely drenched!
This is definitely my favourite performance of this devilish piece!!! It has been by other pianists but their performance (at least the ones I heard) of that doesn't come close to this one. I wish we could hear Liszt play this one, it must be out of this world!!!
a professional piano player explain me: ''to play Campanella in encores is a proof of Super Class'' and Kissin was showing to the audience who is in the most elegant way!
Ok, I’ll try to explain to you…as a classical pianist and organist myself for more than 1/2 a century, BUT it’s my own opinion. Someone else might differ and I don’t mind! Kissin is not the only ‘talented’ professional 🎹ist who has played an encore of this piece, which btw is considered by the ‘top’ professional pianists/instructors (such as in Juilliard and Curtis) as being the most difficult classical piece ever written and composed. For example, Lang Lang also does this one as an encore (and personality I feel he plays it better, and not bc of the technical difficulty, but bc he puts more expression and emotion in his style than Kissin does (imho). I think it’s played as such also bc the whole piece is very long and would take too much time to play it in its entirety, unless it was planned on given the length of a concert’s allotted time. There are others who have done this as well as encores, but there are also some (not many) full versions of this piece that were done as recordings rather than during live concert videos. I’ve searched quite a bit for a complete live video of it, but haven’t found a good one yet. I hope this ‘short’ answer helps answer your question!?
@@AppleApple-tb1yf YES! I began to study both the piano and organ just after learning how to read which, IIRC, was around 4 1/2 - 5. Now I’m nearing 70 and bc of debilitating arthritis in my hands and fingers I sadly can no longer play. 😢
I bought a vinyl of a version of la campanella. It was the most outrageous thing I ever saw. A simplified piano version, with a simplified violin version in the background, an abomination. I'm so happy to be able to listen to this version, of kissin playing it l, even with minor flaws, but with all complexity and passion that this piece have. A real balsam.
If I sat down to play in front of that crowd at Royal Albert Hall, I'd hit approximately ZERO of those D#'s. Course I can only probably hit it about 70% of the time when I'm by myself lol.
I always thought that the most difficult instrumemnt to play is the violin; at moments, during this piece, Kissin made me think that it was the piano. But it's just that he's so great.
I’m not sure why YT isn’t letting me add my own comments on this video, but… As opposed to what you thought of Kissin’s playing this technically very difficult piano piece as being ‘great’, I tend to disagree with you. While he is able to play it well, he doesn’t ‘move me’ like Lang Lang does (w/ other pieces too), in the sense that I don’t feel any emotion or depth to his treatment. LL is superior in this aspect imo. I’m in my late 60’s and was trained as a classical pianist and organist since I was 5, and this one in particular is considered to be THE most difficult piece to play by the top critics and musicians around the world, with ‘La Campanella’ being ranked just slightly below (and ‘Fur Elise’ as being a beginner’s piece). If you haven’t heard Lang Lang play some of the same pieces as Kissen, it’s definitely worth watching some of his live performances!
@@elainemeyer5062 I don't think that you're responding to my comment. I was comparing violin playing agaist piano playing. But since you ask, Lang Lang, like Yuja Wang, is a pop star, and many people think that they feel something in relation to it. For me, his gestures do not elevate his score. In addition, he does not play the most difficult parts of the piece! Anyway, I prefer Rubenstein to anyone playing today.
@@nicolasdelaforge7420 It’s ok to have different opinions on who we prefer. Life would be dull if everyone thought alike about everything! But in any event, I still am of the opinion that Lang Lang plays with more feeling and emotion than most other 🎹ist’s. I’m not saying that I don’t think Gould plays well - he has a very different style, BUT he’s still more expressive than many others that are still playing today. For me personally, and I don’t mean to say that you’re wrong since it’s your choice, I just don’t feel ‘moved’ when I listen to Kissen play this piece (or any of the others I’ve heard and watched videos of him play). Also, I didn’t mean to imply that he wasn’t technically good. I hope you don’t take this to be the beginning of a debate or argument - only to exchange points of view with the hope that we can both respect each other’s!
