    Update - One issue we've found using the pixel tubes regularly for several weeks - when you power them up, they retain the last settings you used EXCEPT the dimmer setting on the effects. And if you use the buttons on the tube to change the dimmer setting, all of the other settings for the effect mode you're in reset to their defaults. This is an annoyance I hope Amaran can fix with a firmware update.

    An SSI score of 85 is interesting considering the perceptual differences between the two. I look forward to the upcoming video on this topic as I have often felt there was a tangible difference between actual tungsten lights and high CRI/SSI tungsten LEDs.

      @@curtisjudd how long was your halogen lamp on for before shooting? They tend to start at a lower color tempature then gradually shift higher as they warm.

      Yeah, the color temp is totally stable at that point..
      Interesting, there really is a big perceptual difference.

      Looking at the background, I can tell the IRIS was adjusted to compensate. But what's more interesting, the contrast also looks to be higher on the background of the right image. Which makes me think you may have changed the ISO and lost some dynamic range?

    Great review as always Curtis! Maybe these lights can be a good cheap alternative to the Astera Helios ✌

    Is the 1ft one brighter than Aputure MC?
    On a side note, I would appreciate it if you could tells us the camera settings and the distance of the light from the wall, so we can at least approximate the brightness.
    Regardless, thank you for the review.

    We are trying to add them into a matrix to create a custom sequence but they are greyed out. Do you know if this is possible?

  • @lukastemberger
    @lukastemberger Год назад

    I understand this is probably not nice of me since it's a sponsored video... But there's Nanlite Pavotube T8-7X which is incredibly cheap. $385 for 4 of them.
    Not as bright, but plenty for effects or a shoot without huge amounts of light to drown them out.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  Год назад

      Cool! Have you used them?

    • @lukastemberger
      @lukastemberger Год назад

      @@curtisjudd Yup, I got 4 of them right after I wrote the comment. They're super light, have all the app functionality of the expensive ones, good color accuracy. They can run off of a USB-C power bank practically all day. Otherwise about an hour at max power with internal battery.
      They're definitely just an effect/accent/mood light. Or great in a low light shoot. But not powerful enough to act as a main source of light.
      I'm happy with the purchase because of the crazy low price. I have 2x Nanlite 150 and 1x Nanlite 300 for serious light sources...

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  Год назад

      Also, not sure what you meant exactly by sponsored, but to be clear, Aputure gave me the lights to make the video but did not pay me further.

    any comments to the output of this fixture? I feel like not a single reviewer has spoke to the fact its has subpar output compared to other tube lights out there on paper.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  Год назад

      As an effects light, I haven't found these to be lacking for my purposes. I have worked on productions where they've used the Quasar Science tube lights and I don't see a huge difference, but we're using them as effects lights, not as key lights. Maybe you're looking to use them as a key?

    • @clizzaudio
      @clizzaudio Год назад

      @@curtisjudd I think using tube lights as a key is common practice in productions. It feels odd that Aputure have released 3 different lights in this form factor none of which can compete with the Titan tube (which i think we all have been waiting for). Effect lighting seems too niche to build a tube solely for that purpose (given its low output).

    • @LearnLightAndSoundSessions
      @LearnLightAndSoundSessions Год назад

      @@clizzaudio Interesting. Thanks for sharing. I'm over here keying with panels and COBs so I guess I didn't have that expectation in my mind for tubes.
