Something tells me that the next creator DLC will end up being that Project A mod that was teased a few years ago.

I mean most mod creators wouldn’t be so confident in their mod that they would work on it for over 4 years so that’s probably true.

Seeing a retrospective of the thing I worked on from someone else's view really just made me think how much time it has been... Truth be told, there's a LOT more to CDLC and its origins that people don't (and most likely will never) know about. And if there will be a new CDLC just remains to be seen... I think not at least!

    • @pailko

@@pailko Official DLC? No. CDLC? Most likely not.
As someone who's only worked for Vanessa's Curse specifically and a few projects that attempted CDLC (including some BIG ones), I can't really shoot down the possibility of another CDLC. It isn't in my area to do so. However, I've seen projects come and go, some get abandoned. Or in the worst cases, they degrade or change midway through to try and fit the standards given to them. As CDLC currently stands, it's a publishing service with standards that may just be too high for regular modders. And given its history and for whom it was specifically made, it's not too surprising...

@@moumekie Okay, now I'm intrigued. Will any of this information be made public (why it was made, for whom it was made, it's history, projects that were attempted)? This is all news to me.

Again, probably not! Unless someone breaks the story, I'm sure CDLC's history will be forgotten entirely.

I had the blessing of being involved with the first CreatorDLC (voice acting). I really appreciate your video, and enjoyed how in-depth you got with it.
Vanessa's Curse was (and is) a blast to play! Online Party was always fun, but it never really felt like a stand-out feature. It needed something EXTRA to give it it's own identity. And Vanessa's Curse did a fantastic job of giving it that identity.
I won't say it was all perfect. I had my own experiences with the lag, dropouts, glitches, etc. I think the source of a lot of these stability issues were some bone-deep limitations of the Online Party system. Online Party wasn't really conceptualized to be a lagless 1-to-1 experience. So now that Vanessa's Curse was attempting to do JUST THAT, it was really pushing Online Party's limits and showing it's weaknesses.
Despite this, both the original devs and the Vanessa's Curse crew worked tirelessly over the following week to iron out a bunch of the glitches, adjust party size limits to correct connection issues, and tweak timers and mechanics to balance the game and make it fair for both teams. They stood by this product and made it shine as bright as possible! It's still by no means perfect. But again, given how Online Party was never meant for competitive 1-to-1 play, it's impressive what they accomplished.
    ------
To me, CreatorDLC is definitely how you described it: "Potential". For both Gears for Breakfast AND the dev community.
I know that some of the Gears devs got their start making mod content before moving on to their own creations. I think this is a BIG reason why they want to help give community members a chance to work on the game. Modding could be the first step in someone's developer career. And it's a pretty big resume piece to say that your work was included in a widely-successful video game.
It also gives Gears an opportunity to keep releasing new content for the game. It means that players can possibly anticipate more stuff to play sometime down the line. And while Vanessa's Curse had to be exclusive to the PC release (using a proprietary Steam netcode to work), Gears has not thrown out the possibility of CDLC content being ported to other consoles.
And obviously, more content means more money. That's a pretty solid incentive for Gears to bring on fan-made content. That said, CDLC devs have told me that the money split is pretty fair. For a lot of people in the mod community, the possibility to not only get your vision added to the game, but to get paid for it as well?! That's exciting!
And even if you don't get approved for CDLC, you've still got something you can be proud of and release independently as a standard mod.
    ------
I absolutely agree that 2 years is a LOOOOONG time to wait for anything to get announced. I'm also still ambitiously waiting to see someone else get their work approved.
Whenever I think about how much time has passed since CDLC was announced, I try to remember that game development takes time. I don't know how long Vanessa's Curse was in development. But what I DO know is that it was already prepped and ready to announce the second CDLC became a thing. Newer CDLC candidates don't have the same luxury. While 2 years seems like a wasteland of time, it makes more sense when you put it in the context of everyone's CDLC work being started the moment CDLC was announced.
I mean, Hat in time itself took 5 years of dev time. And I'm sure that it was a development cycle of concepting, writing, modeling, texturing, recording, coding, and then reiterating on what worked and what didn't.
For me, if there IS more CDLC, I'll be happy. If not, I'll still be happy. I'm just glad to have seen GfB give the community a chance to directly contribute to the game we love.

I really enjoyed this brief video essay, it felt well-thought-out and polished. My only advice is that the "Day 1 Experience" section went on too long without any sort of scripted voiceover, in my opinion. If you make another video like this in the future, perhaps consider putting scripted content over any similar clip reels, so that the video feels more cohesive. That being said, I really enjoyed the video, and I hope that you'll consider making more video essays in the future.

    • @Zeder966
      @Zeder966  11 месяцев назад +59

Always appreciate the feedback! Honestly, the main reason the "Day 1 Experience" segment was so long was because I originally just wanted to do a standard gameplay video for Vanessa's Curse when it came out, but I put it off for so long that I felt inclined to make a more edited and scripted video like this. That segment was mostly a carry over from back then, but based on what you and others have been saying about its length I'll be sure to not overdo it in future projects like this. Glad you enjoyed the vid!

Awesome video all around! It covers a lot of how I feel about CDLC and Vacu as a whole.
I love playing Vacu with friends a lot, and have even made some stuff for it before (like a small Death Wish pack). It can be buggy, and latency can be hell depending on other OP player's connection, but it's still loads of fun, ESPECIALLY during all the events. They teased modders that we could maybe make our own Vacu maps at one point, but we never got direct access to all the tools needed to do so, so that'll probably never happen (especially since the online userbase is so limited).
I feel the main reason a lot of people haven't shown that they're working on something CDLC-related is either that they're just keeping it under wraps until it's ready (Vacu, for example, was teased in a handful of very-obscured screenshots in the mod showcase channel on the AHIT Discord, and went silent for a good while until it was officially revealed), or some people just don't want to take the gambit that CDLC production naturally has.
In order to make something for CDLC, you'd likely have to spend a GOOD amount of time developing the mod, either by yourself, or with a small team of other modders. Interest in developing a mod can drop fast, depending on whether or not there's incentives to keep going with it. I've ran into this many a-times myself with a lot of my mod projects. And when you can't truly confirm whether or not the effort will even be worth it until you present a decently-finished product to GfB (for all the final touches and assistance needed), hope to Snatcher that they approve, and you can get paid for all your time and labor spent, it cuts down a lot of people who'd be willing to participate.
The idea as a whole is very neat, but it's very flawed for modders themselves who could potentially be interested in it. Modding as a whole is generally just a hobby. An addictive one at that, but something you probably would just translate into work elsewhere. The lead devs of Vacu are part of teams for other non-Hat games currently, so it seems CDLC would be something you would want to produce as a side interest, and not have be your main goal. As you said, though, what qualifies as a CDLC could truly vary, so maybe this statement would change if we ever get more.
Great video overall; glad to finally see a compiled "retrospective" like this for the current state of CDLC.

Coming from the mod community, when this discussion appears in my own circles is that we really absolutely don't know what "fits" the CDLC standard, like you said, its very ambiguous so anything fits, the problem is we are concerned over the quality, there's a lot of modders who can achieve said quality in very high standards similar to an actual game, but then the next question comes, "do we really need to make this behind a price tag?" and ends up with just releasing the to workshop page instead.
I've been in many projects that were discussed privately to be "CDLC worthy" but we were concerned over the same things I've mentioned in the last paragraph so it never really passes filling the form in the end and we just release the mod for free.

Fun fact, CreatorDLCs can not have official translation support. So if someone wants to translate a CreatorDLC into other languages, they have to make a mod for it instead. Official DLC 1 (Seal the Deal) and 2 (Nyakuza Metro) have official translation support. But CreatorDLC can not get official translation support.
I don't know why it's like this. But that's how it is.
Official translators also never got DLCs for free or something, and I didn't want to buy Vanessa's Curse because I wasn't interested in MOBAs, so someone else thankfully contributed necessary text files that I was able to translate alongside other translators. That's right, I've translated Vanessa's Curse but I've never played it. xD

It rather shocks me that it's been 2 whole years since Vanessa's Curse released... I won't lie, I speedran buying out the shops and haven't touched it since.
The issue is that A Hat in Time is essentially a dead game when it comes to the devs directly working on it, but with a bursting community it's mod support is thriving. Nobody wants to see it die, but unless you're on PC it's full-on dead in the grave. Creator DLC is super cool, but it's a scary task for a simple fan to come up with brand new content for their beloved game... so nobody has really stepped up to the plate since. But to at least give some hope that somebody will is reassuring to have.

  • @Abelix95

What a nice little video RUclips suggested to me randomly. And it's about one of my favorite games, too.
Hey there. As I'm someone who is occasionally making level based mods for Hat using the official modding tools, I thought I wanted to share my thoughts on the Creator DLC and your video.
Back when the program was announced, I immediately thought about trying to apply one of my mod ideas, something I just started working on at the time, but... since it was a mod that had a wastly different playstyle from A Hat in Time's usual 3D platforming, I wasn't sure if it was going to cut it. Maybe it would be "way out there" and "hard to get into" by casual players.
This different gameplay style was also heavily reliant on, if not outright mimicking some parts of other games, mostly Nintendo games... and as we all know, we don't want to mess with Nintendo when it comes to copyright or monetization.
Plus, as the mod kept growing, becoming more and more ambitious, I wanted it to "feel right", and considering where the inspiration came from, it couldn't have been complete without using copyrighted music or some other assets from those very games.
Even thought I managed to write a whole story using only base Hat in Time characters and a few OCs, I still thought about including some actually existing copyrighted characters for bonus content, and...
At one point I just decided "You know what? Maybe CDLC is not worth it if I want my mod to be as closely realized to my ideals as I wanted it to be. Let's just make a normal mod instead where I can get away with stuff, I don't really care about the money any more."
So yeah, to this day, I'm not entirely sure what would or wouldn't be eligible for the CDLC program, and I think it's the same for most modders: they either think it would have to be something that stays relatively close to how the base game's gameplay works, and they think their mods are "too ambitious" to be "restricted" like so...
or maybe they don't have the resources to make something look as "officially passable" as Vanessa's Curse, what with all the custom assets and whatnot.
So while the idea of the program was good, I wonder if it will have any future at all, with how A Hat in Time itself is losing steam now so many years after release.
Who knows, maybe if Hat 2 will eventually come out, with CDLC outright announced, people will be more willing to try again?

This was a great video, but like Undeemiss has noted, the "Day 1" part felt a bit too intrusive.
Also the part about Creator DLC being "focused on building something that would otherwise be a struggle for a regular mod" felt a bit out of nowhere? At least that was not the impression I had when Creator DLC first rolled out - it always seemed more like Gears for Breakfast opening an avenue for their fans to participate in development of the game itself. Something bigger than just a mod, but not on a technical level, moreso on the "it's actually sold as a part of the game, instead of an addition the player may choose to change the game" level.
Makes me wonder if the reason for the inactivity of the program is the fact that the creators who are truly passionate about creating the content for the game prefer the freedom of being a fan over the honor and profit of being a business partner.
I hope more people see this video, maybe that's how we will finally get a second Creator DLC!

I haven't really played much of the AHiT outside of when it first came out and the cruise DLC so finding this on my recommendations was interesting. I do wonder what the devs originally intended for the Creator DLC and whether or not they found the submissions (or maybe lack of submissions?) lackluster or wanting more. Lastly, the only shocking thing I found that you said in this video is the fact that you don't use Discord.

One of the issues I see is that the modding tools might not allow a big enough experience. You can make something like Nyakuza Metro, but you can't make a new hub like your spaceship that leads to new levels or have proper story progression as you can't get time peices (though not sure about making a new collectable.) You can't make a DLC-like mod; it has to fit in a level.

You said Hat Kart and now I can't stop thinking that has to be the next DLC, Hat in Time's mechanics translated into a kart racer somehow
It would definitely be something that pushes the boundaries a lot, and should probably be its own game instead but you knoww
Another thing I can't help but think of is something that actually makes use of the multiple characters feature, since there's all sorts of character mods out there but not really any official content based around switching characters.

Is this game any good outside Switch? I tried it on switch, took 36 gigs, felt that only was worth it for the ''Cute'' factor, the story was boring, only snatcher had anything worthwhile, moustache was a non factor and then appeared out of nowhere, as a collectaton it has too few collectible hourglasses, the DLC ship was boring, the DLC yakuza was kinda interesting but ended in a ''battle'' that wasnt a battle, the platforming was repetitive and boring, I couldnt really care about the game because it felt like they just tried to fill the screen with cute stuff because the game couldnt carry itself on level design or platforming.

    • @Zeder966

Honestly it depends on how interesting the mods and Online Party seems to you. There's legit a lot of good user created content for the game, enough to put me over 200 hours of playtime, but if you weren't already a fan of the game it's hard to say. If you see the game + DLC on sale for Steam and think the price is worth it to check the mods out for yourself, go for it. If not, don't feel bad about it.

it sounds like you just didn't like the game, so another version of it probably wouldn't change your mind. That said the switch version is definitely the worst-performing one of the bunch, and it's missing all the social and user-created stuff that makes the PC version stand out. It might be worth getting it on a steam sale, you can always refund it under a certain playtime if it doesn't suit you
