There is an invisible Turbo Lift Shaft ? The USS Titan seems to suffer the same problem as does the USS Phoenix, and Steam Runner class - seems to barely have enough space for a turbo loft shaft to the deflector pod. I guess they must have very small turbot lift pods to get around the struts. who knows perhaps even the Enterprise Refit had such shafts too. Just look at the Norway class with what seems like really thin wings - I wonder what is inside them too. I guess the bigger you make a ship the more likely the skinny areas have enough space for the Turbo lifts of a usable deck. Is there actually even usable space in an Akira class's struts ? What about the right angled struts on a Ambassador class or a Excelsior class ? Can someone walk around inside some parts of them ?
Yes I think they did it on purpose like that so it's a secure area - but One would hope it has some other way too ( I think I did hear mention of an extendable access tube somewhere)
I actually always thought you enter the ship via the Arms that attach to the Left and Right side on the deflector. So you arn't actually attracting to the defector. This would mean that you enter like you do on other Starfeet Ships on the side. This makes sense because a Klingon Birds of Prey docks with the station and if you remember in Star Trek 4. The Birds of prey have airlocks on the side on the forward torpedo bay.
That does make sense, since there is a round port on either side of the nose. Hard to tell from the video if the arms on DS9 reach back that far, but I think they do.
I'll go as far as to say perhaps those arms are the walkways and moorings! The airlock is cleverly fitted to the sides of the Defiant's nose. Just like the runabout doors you see in the Q episode! It would make a little more sense since you could double the amount of people coming and going if you had two exits on either side! Plus, if you look at the two orange squares next to DECK 2, those could be "Freight Doors" Either way, I'll go with Deep Space Nine has Airport moving walkways that are also claws. That makes sense! Well, enough to make me happy anyway.
Indeed I don't ever remember them talking about shuffling ships around because of an inability to dock at the ring or pylons yet random gamma quadrant ships can dock there with ease like Tosks ship so there must be some sort of less ridged moving port adapter.
I always thought that the front part of the Defiant looked like a garage door, and it just swiveled up and out of the way. Silly, I know. But the whole thing is silly now. :P
Ferengi Rule of Acquisition - “Don’t think about it.” Think about the Klingon Bird of Prey. Even the station and DS9 and the internal plans aren’t right. The Defiant is mostly 2 decks with 3 in some places, for the emergency shuttle/escape pod.
Maybe they set up a transporter pad in the Airlock thats reserved for the Defiant? That kind of overcomplication wouldnt be atypical for the Federation. Would be amazing if you would just walk in one side, come out the other and not even notice you were beamed.
I just like how a Cardassian space station just HAPPENS to be compatible with every species' docking ports. Just like on Enterprise, the ships always docked together, had compatible ports and hardly anyone commonly used transporters.
And the communications. How is it that any two ships can talk to each other? Even on earth we have compatibility issues with video encoding. And how is it that when you call someone on your own ship, the communicators already know who you're talking to? In one episode of voyager ("the cloud") we see Tuvok call "Tuvok to Kim", and simultaneously hear his voice come through Kim's comm badge, before Tuvok had even said Kim's name.
Have you seen how “compatible “ the Cardassian men are with women from other species? It’s no surprise that their “docking” hatches are compatible with ships from other races.
The communicator part probably ties into the universal translator. Basically the computer is always monitoring everyone's pending vocalizations and simultaneously translates and routes the message in the fraction of a second between you deciding what to say and the words actually coming out. Why they still need to press buttons to fly the ship if they can read a brain in that much detail I have no explanation for.
Simply put it's just a standard in the same way that we have any kind of international standard in today's world. If you're a race in the alpha quadrant that values commerce and trade then you need to ensure your vessels or dry docks can accomodate as many different races as possible. Therefore you end up with a standardised docking system. We already kind of had this in real life. The Russian space program and NASA has to decide a standard for docking for joint missions. The ISS being the clear example.
Obviously there are corresponding Iconian gateways just outside of camera view on both the Defiant and DS9 that allows these two points to connect...This overly complicated use of technology to solve a simple problem is what inspired the Jem'Hadar rebels to seek out the technology in season 4 after the female Vorta discovered it's existence in "The Search".
It's possible (though a bit convoluted..) that the deflector array pulls back, and a docking assembly descends and moves forward.. Possibly a flexible tube or some kind. It's also possible that what we see externally are shots of it just arriving and just leaving.. And it likely takes a moment for everything to move into place. But... This is all just speculation and wishful thinking on my part..
Great video as always! In the DS9 technical manual it shows that a lot of the normal facets of a starship are hidden under armour panels on the Defiant. For example there are NO escape pods visible on the ship until eps like Valiant where we see that large panels fold back or slide open to reveal them underneath. I've always just accepted that when the Defiant docks with the station, the top edge of the Deflector Pod (where the NX-74205 text is) just slides back to reveal a hidden airlock behind it. Totally makes sense and would keep a vulnerable hatch at the front of the ship protected. Of course there are a hundred other issues with DS9 like the error of the scale with the Ent D docked in the pilot (it should be almost twice the size they show it and take up almost the entire upper docking space but oh well....lol). Keep up the great work
IKR Klingons too buddy. I always laughed at the thought of birds of prey crew crawling through the torpedo tube. No wonder they were so cranky by the time they got to Quark's.
Well, _I'm_ impressed! It only took around two and a half _years_ for some, uh, "complex" algorithm to determine that I have an interest in Star Trek (DS9 especially) and actually suggest your content to me. sɪɢʜ ...
Your videos are consistently excellent and I love the humour you mix in with the facts, always gives me a chuckle! And your reasoning and Analysis is always spot-on. Thanks so much for many enjoyable hours and I'm proud to be a patron!
Awww... Missed opportunity to look at DS9: Harbinger (PC game) Edit - I meant DS9: The Fallen - Wherein one can board the Defiant from a space station docking port. Might still be hokum, but it's also pretty kewl (imo)...!
Jump to 1:08, see that little circle on the side of the nav pod, perhaps that's the docking port and you walk through one of those little 'sticky out bits' on the station docking port to the side of the Defiant.
That section of hull plating at the tip is probably a cover for the airlock. We likely never see it open because they shut it when no one is coming aboard or leaving. Same thing for the Runabouts. It's a security thing.
Theory: The docking clamps have doors inmbeded in one/both side(s). This allows for access to a hidden door port on the side of the Defiant's nav defletor setup.
Under the registry there is 2 panel lines right at the top lip of the nose, which lines up with the floor of deck 2. that whole panel could slide back and a docking umbilical could slide out (maybe that orange frame thing right in the nose of deck 2).
Looks like the concept design has the entire front part of the ship as detachable, and likely the inspiration for the Prometheus. Seriously, that entire front section of the ship reminds m of the SilverHawks flyer. If anyone is old enough to remember that 80's cartoon.
the first time I saw the defiant dock with ds9, the section you refer to flipped completely over on it's y axis, turning it completely around so the other end faced the docking port. check the first episode that the defiant appears in the series when the defiant first arrives at the station.
Troi got a British accent _because she's cool,_ and got _really_ into classic punk rock in her later years. If she were here to hear you ask that question, then sheeee would hate you, and sheeee'd _berate you!_
I like my explanation... part of the deflector array folds inward to reveal a hidden main hatch and access way built with the deflector built all around the hatch and access way. Better security to have a hidden hatch that will keep the Borg and any other intruders guessing how to physically board the ship. As for why it is not seen in the side view schematic. Because it is not visible from the side because of other equipment in that area. On a top view chart it would be seen as a void within all of the deflector equipment. The only time you would see the deflector opening inward would be right before it docked and soon as the ship disengages from the air and is clear a few meters the deflector would swing into it's working position and thus hiding the hatch. If the defiant docked this way every thing in cannon is feasible. The only thing is they never talked about the hidden hatch because of security concerns. Well how about that????
I love the burn marks on the concept art. I don't know if a ship in space would get those. I'm guessing the concept was implied to have a lot of atmospheric use as well.
So, the ring on the middle holds the ship and the two arms extending to either side is where the doors are. There are port and starboard doors, not a fore door. In your drawing it is right next to "2" and before that 2 pops up 1:38, there was a guy standing right next to the orange door on the blue print. You aren't looking at the interior of the Defiant at 1:00, thats the inner wall of the 2 door airlock of DS9. At least this is all how it played out in my mind.
Good for Klingons that their Bird of Preys have a Torpedo launcher at the front. I guess Martok crawls through it every time his ship is docked to enter DS9
If you don't mind me suggesting a topic - Have you considered the Visual evolution of 21st/22nd Century designs from Phoenix to Nx-Alpha to Warp Delta to Intrepid to NX-01 etc.. I was looking at the models of them and it's kinda visually interesting to look at the progression - anyway I thought i'd bring it up in case you saw some merit as a possible subject for a video.
The closest I've come to that timeframe was a USS Franklin vs. NX-01 video I was working on right after Spock's Marshmallow Dispenser in summer 2017. That got derailed when I moved apartments then immediately got the flu. I need to circle back to that one.
Ok ; Lets see what else I can suggest... Videogame specific ship videos A FASA or Starfleet Battles retrospective a CD Rom game retrospective on things like Star Trek Klingon & Borg games. A general retrospective on old Star Trek Games from board games through early videogames (like the Vectrex) to The early adventure games and so on (might be a multi-parter like your Super-suit vids). A Crazy Kitbash video might mention the yeager or things like the Intrepid class variant that has a Constitution like Saucer on it or other oddities like the Niagra class. If you own them eventually - perhaps a Video showing off your eaglemoss ships by theme or era. As to non Star trek Topics - how about a series on old sci fi Movies that have an interesting vehicle of space ship in them (to many to list). But something a bit obscure just so people feel educated and informed.
I always just assumed that the deflector assembly retracted and flipped down so that the docking tether (Orange triangle on the middle deck?) could extend and mate with the station's docking port. Given how fiddly something like that would have been to film, I quietly ignored the issue and pretended like they cut the scenes to just before or after the transition.
Logically speaking one would assume that the docking clamps merely hold the ship in place and the airlock security measures are for transporter clearance. It would make sense since airlocks already have the security detection hardware installed.
My Theory is that the airlock access is in one, or both, of the extending arms, as everytime people are seen getting onto the Defiant, they turn a corner to go down a short hallway, rather than the airlock being on the side of the main corridor.
This reminds me of when I built ships with Lego's and I would imagine the lights and ports... ds9 was grown men playing with great new tools.. one of the first show to have major cgi every episode.... like when I found out I could combine legos with megablocks to make my own creations.
Ah the mystery that can never be solved.. Maybe the front deflector somehow shifts and angles backwards and reveals the docking hatch behind it? Who knows! Always love your videos!
Only 3½ minutes long, but such a great video! :) In my imagination, here's how the Defiant docks… Part of the hull opens out and extends forward to create a walkway through from the middle deck. The portion of the hull that opens out is very well blended so you don't see the join when it's shut.
I just wanted you to know that I really enjoy Junkball Media. I'm glad that your making videos again as there are times I haven't laughed so hard (like your review of STIII and how the Klingon couldn't "cling on" to the cliff of the Genesis planet... But seriously, I've always just assumed because of the irregular shape of the Defiant you can't just place a standard docking port on the side like a traditional starship. As they had to get creative they placed it in the navigational deflector, but because Defiant is a close range fighting ship, not like a traditional starship that fires at its target from some distance away and general evades the Target's explosion, if an actual airlock door isn't definable then they likely put it behind a heavy duty blast door. The blast door protects the airlock door from debry encountered during dogfighting. Then during docking in either one or two parts it'd swing aside to allow the actual airlock door to operate. Also the docking mechanism allows entry and egress through the navigational deflector only while the deflector is powered down or in standby and is likely armored to protect against errant radiation from the deflector.
Easy: there is a plate that goes over the docking portion of the nav pod. The hatch is located toward the center bottom. The ship is built for war, after all. And, not every single thing is shown on the master readout.
I want to make a note.... there are ports could be on the side of the front pod. Represented on the studio model by somewhat flattened Darleck bumps. pause video at 1:09 for reference. Note: this is a guess and I really don't know.
Maybe the top portion of that front piece pops up like a camper trailer and docking conduit origami’s out. But we never see that because it only does that when people are actively boarding or disembarking
my assumption was alway that there was a hatch along the side of the deflector schnoz, and one of the docking clamps had the opposite hatch built into it.
Makes you wonder if the refit that dock with an Iconian Gateway that's locked to a spot on the Defiant, but it only works close range due to power constraints. Or, as Kryten from Red Dwarf would point out, "We could use the teleporter." Putting a transporter into that airlock would be an easy answer, beaming them into the docked Defiant. Why they would do it that way wouldn't make sense, but whatever. The only other option would be using replicator tech to reconfigure the hull after the docking clamps are secured to make the actual airlock connection.
"If you're wondering how he eats and breathes and other science facts (la la la), Then repeat to yourself, 'It's just a show, I should really just relax ...' " From the MST3K theme.
I believe it's just an oversight when the model was designed. It doesn't look like they put any docking ports like other ships have (ie. Voyager docked at DS9 upper pylon). Maybe they intended for it to dock at a pylon. Then I'm sure someone went "hey what if we shove the Defiant nose first into the outer ring dock?", and that's how defiant docks.
I suppose they could always claim that the "dock port" only holds the Defiant in place so it doesn't drift, but they actually beam into and out of the corridor behind the DS9 dock port. Would kind of be a colossal waste of energy though.
The docking pylon port connection is on a slight swivel. When docking, the nose tips up or down, then the port opens up and at the port and starboard of the cone front, allowing a single person to exit either end, but only when transformed into a polygon docking port. Doesn't explain the visual in the airlock though. The model nose does slightly shift up or down. Cloaking?
There are two diagonal seams that run through the nose registry number. In theory that central panel could flip up and a docking probe could extend from there. Why isn't it more explicit on the model? The Defiant's a warship, so vulnerable components like docking ports are hidden under armored panels when not in use.
It's worse when you see a bird of prey docked there and the poor souls that have to crawl through the damn torpedo launcher to get out.
That visual is amazing.
lmfao!
The Empire would make its soldiers do some dumb shit like that. "We don't need docking ports! Those don't kill the enemy, torpedoes do!"
Perfect! That was beautiful! LOL, LOL, LOL, LOL, LOL.................................................. I can't breath! That was good!
Today is a good day to slide.
This and "How do the crew get between the two parts of an Oberth" is what keeps me up at night. :-p

Yes I think they did it on purpose like that so it's a secure area - but One would hope it has some other way too ( I think I did hear mention of an extendable access tube somewhere)
Some runabouts/the delta flyer even have room for a Jefferies tube.
Jeffery was a small man. Perhaps a dwarf
What keeps me up at night is how the Starfleet engineer responsible for developing the Miranda-Class can sleep at night.
Great use of Rom! But I'll never be able unsee this Defiant gaff. Ever.
Black Duskull "Nooo..."
Then his work is done!
Eh, maybe that door that riker walked through lead to a transporter room
Riiiiiiiiiight... but if our universe's Defiant is a warship, shouldn't the alternate Defiant be unarmed? This _is_ the _alternate_ universe!
That does make sense, since there is a round port on either side of the nose. Hard to tell from the video if the arms on DS9 reach back that far, but I think they do.
If you look at the show. The corridors align perfectly with this as well
It is able to dock because The Sisko wills it to. LOL
It’s the will of the Prophets.
He yelled at it a bit and it gave in and docked
WHAT ABOUT THE PICARD?!
What about him lel
Look, Sisko is cool, but let's not turn him into the next Chuck Norris.
I'll go as far as to say perhaps those arms are the walkways and moorings! The airlock is cleverly fitted to the sides of the Defiant's nose. Just like the runabout doors you see in the Q episode! If you pause the video as the defiant is docking, you can see what looks a square/circular connector of some kind. does add credence to your theory.
Jamie McNeill
You are SPOT-ON Sir... been saying this for 20 YEARS! already!
Totally agree with your idea, I've always thought the same thing.
thats what i thought
2:41 The Concept Ship's bridge is SMILING. I love that! ^_^
Or whatever is on the top. I guess that's not the bridge now
I always thought that the front part of the Defiant looked like a garage door, and it just swiveled up and out of the way.
Silly, I know. But the whole thing is silly now. :P
It was so happy...and then it's smile was removed.
Ferengi Rule of Acquisition - “Don’t think about it.”
Think about the Klingon Bird of Prey. Even the station and DS9 and the internal plans aren’t right. The Defiant is mostly 2 decks with 3 in some places, for the emergency shuttle/escape pod.
I'm disappointed I never noticed this problem before. "Noooooooo!"
Well played, Junkball Media.
This is my new favourite channel. So many other trek fan channels take the tech and lore so seriously. Junkball is is winning RUclips.
ROCKS!!!!!!
maybe it docks and everyone teleports into the ds9 hull
CoinOpTV that’s what I was thinking.
I mean sure, what would be the point to all the episodes showing the air lock then?
You still need to have security clearance to get pass the air lock. Once through, you will be in a waiting area to get beam aboard?
Maybe they set up a transporter pad in the Airlock thats reserved for the Defiant? That kind of overcomplication wouldnt be atypical for the Federation.
Would be amazing if you would just walk in one side, come out the other and not even notice you were beamed.
In Trek you do not "teleport", you beam, or transport
The "no" clips really got me. Love your editing, man.

this drove me nuts when i was a kid.
Rom For the Win!!!
Noo...
Awesome stuff as always. Great videos. God I frigging love DS9. It's my happy place.
To quote a piece from this video and adding a little from myself: How does the Defiant dock? It's the Defiant; it docks however it wants!
Damn you! Now I won't stop thinking about this!
This is something I've pondered for a long while. Glad to see someone pointing it out!
IKR Klingons too buddy. I always laughed at the thought of birds of prey crew crawling through the torpedo tube. No wonder they were so cranky by the time they got to Quark's.
riker: tuff little ship.
worf: LITTLE?!!!
I'm amazed that I had never noticed that!
Well, _I'm_ impressed! It only took around two and a half _years_ for some, uh, "complex" algorithm to determine that I have an interest in Star Trek (DS9 especially) and actually suggest your content to me.

You've got the best theme music
O man. This is one of my favorite videos of yours. Not much data............just stuff.
Larsh The Casual Mechwarrior Yeah it would have been nice to see Data in this video, but he wasn’t a DS9 character.
Chad Epic ahhhhhhhhh. I see what you did there. *High 5*
If you guys notice the semi vertical lines that are where the registry number is, it’s a hatch that drops revealing the airlock port . You’re welcome
I miss your videos!!! 3 months is a long time!!!
Finally, I've always wondered about this.
Jump to 1:08, see that little circle on the side of the nav pod, perhaps that's the docking port and you walk through one of those little 'sticky out bits' on the station docking port to the side of the Defiant.

You just blew my mind with trois accent
Maybe the tan section drops down and there is a clear canopy (shield) to create an airlock.
Or the designers just plain screwed up.
Theory: The docking clamps have doors inmbeded in one/both side(s). This allows for access to a hidden door port on the side of the Defiant's nav defletor setup.
Very well, thank you.
Under the registry there is 2 panel lines right at the top lip of the nose, which lines up with the floor of deck 2. that whole panel could slide back and a docking umbilical could slide out (maybe that orange frame thing right in the nose of deck 2).
After 1:57 to 2:09, I had to pause the video until I stopped laughing. Then repeated it all over again. It's just that funny. Great job and video.
Looks like the concept design has the entire front part of the ship as detachable, and likely the inspiration for the Prometheus.
Seriously, that entire front section of the ship reminds m of the SilverHawks flyer. If anyone is old enough to remember that 80's cartoon.
The Sisko doesn't need to dock his ship. DS9 just takes it!
It is the U.S.S. Ben Sisko's Mutherfuckin' Pimp Hand, after all. LOL
Totally. Defiant just raw dogs it into DS9.
The Sisko : ruclips.net/video/FWkMuWIX90o/видео.html can make Ds9 open it's docking ports wide with the power of his masculinity alone.
The Defiant doesn't dock with DS9, DS9 docks with the Defiant.
BUT CAPTAIN, THE DOCKING RING IS INCOMPATIBLE! SISKO: ALL AHEAD FULL!! CHARGE RIGHT DOWN IT'S THROAT!
Always wondered about that.

a CD Rom game retrospective on things like Star Trek Klingon & Borg games.
I love your videos thank you man!
A brand new video!
Well done, great video!
I always just assumed that the deflector assembly retracted and flipped down so that the docking tether (Orange triangle on the middle deck?) could extend and mate with the station's docking port.
Given how fiddly something like that would have been to film, I quietly ignored the issue and pretended like they cut the scenes to just before or after the transition.
brillent video ,i love the uss defient 😊
Rom is my favourit character in the whole Star Trek franchise.
Logically speaking one would assume that the docking clamps merely hold the ship in place and the airlock security measures are for transporter clearance. It would make sense since airlocks already have the security detection hardware installed.
My Theory is that the airlock access is in one, or both, of the extending arms, as everytime people are seen getting onto the Defiant, they turn a corner to go down a short hallway, rather than the airlock being on the side of the main corridor.
i'd like the concept version over the final version
This reminds me of when I built ships with Lego's and I would imagine the lights and ports... ds9 was grown men playing with great new tools.. one of the first show to have major cgi every episode.... like when I found out I could combine legos with megablocks to make my own creations.
0:33 Probably an optical illusion, but it looks like a tube extends under the forward section, and could be used for docking.
HAHA! I happen to be binge watching DS9 and thought this same puzzle too. Lets not forget the bird of prey torpedo tube exit!
The Ablative Armor covers the docking hatch .
This is great. I love videos like this!
I never realized troi didn't start with that accent. But now that you mention it...
I must admit, this bugged the hell out of me every time I saw it dock... Didn't change that it was a good show though...
Yea, me too.
It's a side port. On 1:34 it's the door to the left of the man on deck two. At 2:54 there's also what could be a port near that corresponding area.
Funny thing on the amc/ertl model there is a small extension on the navigation array that could be taken as a docking port
Same thing with Klingon Bird of prey....they dock with the photon torpedo tube lol
Well, knowing the Klingons, they probably loved entering and exiting via the torpedo tube, lol.
I mean, how much more Klingon can you get?
They should have made the ship backup into the docking port with it facing outwards. Would have looked cooler too.
I always figured that umbilicals extended to the SIDES of the pod from the two arms. There are round markings on the sides (see 1:06).
Defiant looks amazingly like a tick
Fun Vid. Thanks..
Troi always had an english accent.
my assumption was alway that there was a hatch along the side of the deflector schnoz, and one of the docking clamps had the opposite hatch built into it.
Or the panel lines that cut across the registry number could be the outer door for an extending docking adapter.
MAGIC
I never tought about this, interesting video 😁
"If you're wondering how he eats and breathes
and other science facts (la la la),
Then repeat to yourself, 'It's just a show,
I should really just relax
...' "
From the MST3K theme.
I asked this question the first time I saw it dock..
I figured it out. They used memory metal like they found at Roswell.
The Defiant docks very carefully, that's how.
I always found the Defiant docking procedure oddly erotic.
Don't look up "docking" on the wrong sites.
OMG that reminds me of: ruclips.net/video/ReOw_2f4lpY/видео.html
