    • @Deevo037
      @Deevo037 4 года назад +13

      True, the USN aircraft attacked it from both sides having the unintentional effect of counterflooding the ship so she settled slowly level in the ocean. When they attacked Yamato they made sure to attack from one side only causing the ship to sink more quickly from capsizing. In a purely historical sense its a shame one of these vessels didn't survive WW2 as they were the largest battleships ever built eclipsing the US Iowa class by about 20,000 tonnes.

    • @Deevo037
      @Deevo037 4 года назад +5

      @paquitos hammer That was true before the war but the escalator clause built in to the London treaty of 1930 allowed for the Americans (and the British) to re arm and redesign their battleships with the previously outlawed 16" guns in response to German and Japanese plans. Despite the tonnage limit being 35,000 the Bismark, the Iowa and the Yamato all exceeded that restriction though admittedly the Yamato was the largest at some 70,000 tonnes.

    Not being quite as deeply knowledgeable of Trek lore as other people, I've only just now realized that Space Battleship Yamato 2202 has what might well be a reference to this ship.
    The Ginga, sister ship to the titular Yamato herself. Refit to emphasize it's interstellar exploratory capabilities, and replacing the surface-navy-style bridge tower with a very Starfleet-esque saucer section. To top it off, "Ginga" translates to "Galaxy".

    My love for the Yamato CLASS comes from the game Star Trek: Klingon Academy, in which it is one of the ships you can mess around with in Skirmish mode (you can play as pretty much ANY ship in the game in that mode, including multiple factions that don't actually appear during the campaign, and multiple starfleet classes that don't appear during it). Honestly, it is one of the best Star Trek games ever, to be frank. It had a remarkably diverse set of crew commands, system management, and outright general ability to do weird things (like being able to fly through part of a gas giant if you went slowly enough and were constantly micromanaging your shields and damage control systems). The skirmish/free play mode allowing you to just warp wherever the hell you wanted was cool too (in system or out, and yes, you COULD just destroy yourself if you wanted by warping into a planet at warp speed 1-ish or whatever the lowest warp was, because that was the speed you warped around systems at, and only went higher when on the travel map). The game itself had remarkably good vessel damage and destruction mechanics for its time too. I mean, this is a game released in the year 2000, so bear that in mind.
    Oh, and of course, you may guess from the name, but for the campaign, you play as a KLINGON starship commander. Naturally, progressively getting promoted to captain larger and larger ships throughout.
    ...But yeah, the Yamato in that game had two of the super-phaser weapons that were present in its time. The absolute strongest Klingon ship in the game had one. And it also looked cool. So yeah. I kinda like the Yamato class. Oh, and of course, it was NOT a constitution class. It was the strongest class of federation ship in the game. And yes, the Yamato I like is the one that is mentioned as the "sitting duck after firing" one, despite it not actually doing this in Klingon Academy (those super phasers did have a nice cooldown though).

    The USS Yamato Battleship from Klingon Academy:
    Armed with two massive Assault phasers, each capable of cracking the shields of a Starbase or Battlestation, this is the most heavily armed, and powered, Federation ship ever constructed. During initial testing of the assault phasers, it was recommended that the Yamato class receive a second warp core to power the assault phasers only. This recommendation was put into effect and, as of June 2391, the Yamato class Experimental battleships have two warp cores. The Yamato class is also one of the more interesting designs present in the Federation fleet. She has a titanic saucer and two (comparatively) diminutive secondary hulls which are attached to the underside of the saucer. Suspended between these two secondary hulls is the assault phaser mount. One of the breakthroughs concerning this assault phaser design is that it is connected to both warp cores, allowing the single phaser to act like two and fire a second time using the second core's power output. The assault phaser is cooled by exposing some of the critical parts to the vacuum of space. Thus, while allowing for extremely fast cooling of the phaser after firing, the assault phaser is easily damaged once her shields have been breached. But, with shields comparable to small bases, most captains have nothing really to worry about. This design does have its share of failings though. The few captains lucky enough to command these ships have complained how, during simulations, marauding Klingon ships have easily dodged the main fore weapons arrays and concentrated their fire on the port and starboard arcs, rarely straying into the aft arc, and never passing in front of this formidable behemoth’s main weapons systems, thus making her assault phaser nearly useless against smaller ships. Larger ships, however, should be warned not to stray into this formidable battleship's forward arc because of that very phaser. While it is very inaccurate, it still can hit a target of cruiser size or above if it has a good shot. To remedy this problem, Starfleet's design bureau has petitioned for a QCB projector to be added to her standard weaponry. Unfortunately, this petition has not met with results and is still being considered.

    One of the things I dislike about Starfleet is their policy on weapons. There is no such thing as an "unnecessarily overpowered weapon". If a weapon is so powerful that it can cause overloads and sub system failures when used at its maximum setting, simply use it at a lower setting until such a time as sub systems can be buffered against overloads. It may seem contradictory, but a ship that is as heavily armed as is technologically possible possesses more diplomatic options as it is afforded a far stronger negotiation position. The peaceful intentions of a person are far more apparent when they elect the diplomatic option even though they could easily win in a fight.

    The Yamato (NCX 5626) was always one of my favorite designs.
    I played that ship in a starfleet PC game and loved the pure warship aspect of this vessel. I always wanted to see it on the big screen. But to be honest the Terran Empire would've built it outright.
    Starfleet was to pasifistic to ever build this. Even if it was needed for gunboat diplomacy when dealing with the klingons and romulans.

    I think there were a few times in Starfleet, Cannon, history where there were threats to the federation great enough where Starfleet developed warships. The Borg with the Defiant class ships and the Dominion War where in a few episodes of DS9 there were glimpses of a completely different type of ship in the background during the fleet battles. It clearly wasn't a Defiant class ship, but it did look like they just took the body of a Defiant class and add a saucer section and extra stuff to the outside, as the ship was the same size with a small half saucer section and fired cannons (Star Trek did this a lot when making background ships for episodes, they just took existing ship designs and just added stuff to it to look "different"). I am actually surprised that STO didn't make a ship class out of this, but as the ship in question is difficult to see in the background of the one or two episodes I remember it being in, I don't blame them. Then there was the Prometheus, which was another warship created to fight in the Dominion war.
    In STO there was also several classes of ship specifically created to fight different enemies, like The Borg, The Hurq, The Iconians, The Elachi, The Tzencethi etc., but I know they just did this to add ships to the Zen store, Their lockboxes and the Lobi store. So in my own "Head cannon" Starfleet only builds warships to defend itself in times of peril, the rest of the time they build science and exploration ships.

The best in-universe explanation that I've heard was that the Yamato's registry was changed by Starfleet for some logistical reason. 🖖😎👍

    Yes the dreadnought version of the Yamato was build for the war with the borg. In next generation. Enterprise D sister ship was destroyed, but then they built dreadnought version. Came into action when the borg attacked earth. When captain Packard got captured. They where going to put the same spiral lance on the enterprise, but decided they wouldn't have enough time. So they modified the main deflector to do the damage the spiral Lance would do. But it came at a major cost to the enterprise. They originally where going to upgrade the D to the E with a 3rd nacelle and do the same improvements to enterprise.

    That Galaxy “refit” you have two images of look like two separate variations of the Galaxy-X or Galaxy X class as seen in the final two parter of Star Trek TNG, used as Admiral Riker’s ship bearing a third warp nacel that now blocked the shuttle bay and had a phaser “lance” that ran down the middle of the bottom side of the saucer section starting near the main deflector (always wondered if this upgrade rendered the separation function a now impossible feat)

      @Quetzalcoatl_Feathered_Serpent 2 года назад

      Galaxy X ships are still converted exploration vessel hulls changed to battleships. So they would have more significant flaws although I would imagine this improves overtime. The yamato design herself is a warship pure and simple and likely was better suited for combat operations.
      Problem with Yamato is she isnt very well liked by most star trek purist due to being a dedicated warship and not a variant.
      Despite the fact that most ships in starfleet are technically all warships
      It would be awesome if sto managed to dust off and use the original Yamato design from Klingon academy. It's that one ship that everyone outside of federation space knew it existed but kept quiet due to the federation being all hush hush on ships that actually made klingons envious
