Lovely car - had a few when they were current. Unusual to see one in this condition now! The bulb warning could be due to the resistors hidden in the front bumper - from memory they are there to simulate the fog lamps........ can cause a bulb warning.

A lovely car in it's day, I drove a later XJ40 a few years ago though and it seemed a lot slower than I remembered. Are these capable of running on E10 petrol or do they need super/premium unleaded? It is a shame all the service stamps appear to be from an independent garage rather than the main dealer - generally first owners had them serviced at the main dealer for at least the first 5 or 6 years.

@ Car World Used regular petrol in my 93 XJ40 Sovereign for 8 years with no issues.

@@sma7530 I've heard Jaguar say that any car after 1992 is fine on E10 fuel but I'm not sure if this 1990 model is, this is the pre-catalyst old version

@ Car World, the block and head are the same so I wouldn't envisage any issues, maybe the timing is different with the ECU but that's just a guess.
I used to be a member of xj40 forum /website (not sure if I type the link here) and non of the members mentioned anything about any such issues.

That's typical Jaguar the dash shows there is a bulb out and when checking all lights are working. It's a problem I've had with my XJS for 30 yrs. That one is way above average and would say that mileage is correct. As for the service book I would also like to see a bunch of invoices to back it up.

There is a bunch of invoices. He flicked through them before showing the stamped service record 🙂

Dry solder joints in the computer make it report a fault when there isn't. My 88 flashed warning dash lights often on potholed streets, back on a smooth street they all go away. It's great you can repair the computers because they're not set in resin, but that's why they get dry solder joints. Catch 22.

Sadly soon all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-(
In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime (Bundesabgasbespassungsverbotsverordnung & Transporttourismusemissionsbeschränkungsbundesverordnung).

When 2027 comes and the government realises they are nowhere near ready to cut off petrol cars because they're too practical and the power grid will have already started breaking down from the massive burden of cars being charged, nothing will change but fuel taxes increase to pay for their blunder of the cost of repairing or upgrading of the power grid. Meanwhile in many countries coal, natural gas and diesel continue to supply electricity through the grid to your electric vehicles.

If fuel is an issue, best not to buy a Jaguar of this vintage 🙂
