THIS IS ILL!! You hear this, and instantly, your feet start to move, your arms begin to pop and lock, your waistline contorts left and right to the rhythm. THAT'S HOW ILL this beat is. RIP to this artist
What I love about this era is the tempo, the dance music sort off "dragged" along, it took time to really grooove. The beat is so much better than the crazy frenetic pitch of todays pop songs. And of course, Im getting older:)
This is both electro and freestyle. Freestyle came from electro and for a few years, from 1983 (or maybe even 1982)to about 1985, there were a lot of songs that were transitional, electro but heading for what would become freestyle. 1984, from when this song is, has tons of those kind of transitional tracks, a lot with R&B singers.
My bad!! Seems she died in 2002 from liver cancer!! Much respect to her, that was a great voice, she and Renee diggs of starpoint will be truly missed!! May their music remain alive for long
Is not this song simply amazing?? her voice is so sensual. You can picture her talking to her lover, leaves so much to creativity. that's the reason I love 80s disco-funk. Sex so much left to the imagination. great great tunes.
Her vocals can be better appreciated on the radio edit! For some reason no one wants to upload it to RUclips 🤔 Sure the 12in version is popular, but it was the radio edit that many first heard in 1984. It's so nice just to hear the vocals uninterrupted by instrumental breaks, but no, DJs don't want us to hear it 🤷😤
While I do not remember this song growing up (too young to club), I am fond of dance music in general. What I love about this song is Mikki's vocals sneak up on you against the backdrop of a more subdued and moody beat. Only a skilled vocalist can project their angst and longing without sounding desperate.
WOW! I love this classic! I remember listening to this on the now-defunct radio station WCRX here in Chicago (the bassline sounds a little bit similar to C-Bank's "One More Shot"), and Mikki was also born in my hometown of Chicago as well. R.I.P.
@oschvelez Your 100% correct! thanks for standing up for Freestyle, it's guys like you and me who continue to keep freestyle alive....FREESTYLE WILL NEVER DIE!!!!
I am being tortured so much right now, what's up with music today, feel how the music is going through you, unbearably, I got to move, it is too late, my feets are spinning!! lol
We all get older and music styles change. My grandparents preferred Vera Lynn and Bing Crosby.. they just couldn't get into rock& roll, disco. house music etc 😅😂😂
Actually Shannon was the first official Freestyle artist back in 1983. It was produced by Chris Barbosa who was Latino. If you listen closely to "Let the Music Play" and "Planet Rock" as well as Freeez' IOU notice that "Let the Music Play" is heavily Latin influenced with a heavy syncopated drum sound. And notice that Arthur Baker and John Robie imitated Barbosa' new sound on the latter recordings they produced. Many music critics agree with this theory including myself. And the early Freestyle
Would be nice to find a copy of the radio edit on RUclips! Its all well and good having the 12inch/dub mixes etc but the radio edit sounds vocally more complete. I mean, hearing the vocals uninterrupted by extended instrumental breaks.
Aaahhhhh... What a lovely track, this has to be one of or thee best "freestyle" track of all time. I'm wonder why I didn't hear track or the term "freestyle"before all these years when I was into electro. I prefer to call this music Soulfull Electro but when did they start calling it Freestyle? And is it true that the his-spanic community have taken this style over? Anyone
It's not called Latin freestyle for nothing 😉 Back in the day many just called it electro. same happened with early techno tracks, we thought it was house music 😅
@Funkycraze Yeah! Like Latin Rascals, Lizette Melendez, TKA, Jellybean, Brenda K. Starr, Judy Torrez, The Cover Girls, Sweet Sensation, Cynthia, Corina, Lisa Lisa (& cult jam), Sa-Fire, and many, many more... OOPS.. All latinos... and expose was mixed white and latina ladies.. But what matters is the music not the color of the people who made it.
I know this song was on the first Roxanne Shante' album that was mixed together with other Electro songs like this. I always knew this song was good. It has the same keyboard programming as "One More Shot" C-BANK. :)
@oschvelez Freestyle was started by Blacks just like all other music. Its noted & agreed that the first Freestyle artist was Shanon. & Shanon is Black. Every song after that is a remix of her sound.
It's a genre of music. Electro and Freestyle are sort of related.. think planet rock and play at you own risk, both Arthur baker and John Robie productions!
There are two types of Latin freestyle. Early 80s and late 80s 😉 the later stuff was more exclusively popular with Latinos! The earlier stuff more popular with non Latinos! The earlier stuff could be considered less commercial, therefore people will argue about the origins 🤷
This is freestyle, don't know what fool thinks this is not. Most of the latinos made lots of cheesy freestyle songs in the 80s, very few came with awesome tracks like this one beside Noel. Miami freestyle had more to offer, whites and blacks artists made the best freestyle honestly, no diss, Terry billy(Black)/ Mikki (Black)/ Expose(white)/Shannon(black) Camille(white) Jenny burton(black) Jimi tunnell (white) Lisa Fisher (black) Shantelle (Black) C-Bank (black) Janice (black) and so many more.
The earlier pioneers of the sound were not black or white 😉 Although I agree the best stuff came out during the electro era 82 - 84/85 We have to accept that "Latinos" will hold a different opinion, because the later style became more popular/commercial. The earlier stuff was more popular with electro fans (people like me and you) 😉
Love the deep thumping freestyle beats from the 80’s. RIP Mikky
Hot music in the 80's
Amazing song Definitely 👍🎼👍
I love all 80s music! ! Every song had a story!! Great bassline. Old skool sounds like a 808
There was no shortage of 808s in the early 80s 😉
REST IN PEACE Mikki Farrow. May GOD cradle you in peace for all Eternity.
♥️ Love Emergency 💋🔥
THIS IS ILL!!
You hear this, and instantly, your feet start to move, your arms begin to pop and lock, your waistline contorts left and right to the rhythm. THAT'S HOW ILL this beat is.
RIP to this artist
Man, I feel like "Poppin n' Lockin" to this jam! This one was niiiiiice!
WOW! One of my favorite tracks EVER! Very underrated, and underplayed.
Sounds like '"one more shot" I still like it.
What I love about this era is the tempo, the dance music sort off "dragged" along, it took time to really grooove. The beat is so much better than the crazy frenetic pitch of todays pop songs. And of course, Im getting older:)

And/or a knowledgeable producer, guiding the singer..
I have this on the best of Marley Marl Supermix volume 1 mix tape....'84 still look brand new....

@oschvelez Your 100% correct! thanks for standing up for Freestyle, it's guys like you and me who continue to keep freestyle alive....FREESTYLE WILL NEVER DIE!!!!
nice
Damn this shit is awesome!!! love it!!
Electro music is what this is.
I am being tortured so much right now, what's up with music today, feel how the music is going through you, unbearably, I got to move, it is too late, my feets are spinning!! lol

I wish this was on CD. :(
I wish someone would upload the radio edit! It's vocally more complete 😉
@NWO41508
Brilliant. I got this on vinyl, so I recorded this on cassette and listen to it driving too.
This is way more original.

This is all well documented now 😉

@FartyMcBoogers I feel you. Unfortunately at my age, if I try to lock anything, it will stay locked. lol.
Avoid prison 😅🤣🤣

@oschvelez what if its not available anywhere in any store ?
Discogs or search for the mp3 😉
@DjTonyMundaca so true
Som da hora
@oschvelez yupp!!! i agree like Shannon she is African American but lands on the Freestyle category.
@Funkycraze
Yeah! Like Latin Rascals, Lizette Melendez, TKA, Jellybean, Brenda K. Starr, Judy Torrez, The Cover Girls, Sweet Sensation, Cynthia, Corina, Lisa Lisa (& cult jam), Sa-Fire, and many, many more... You need to go back to 1982 to reinforce your argument 😉
Definitely sounds Freestylish!
That's because it is freestyle 🤷
I know this song was on the first Roxanne Shante' album that was mixed together with other Electro songs like this. I always knew this song was good. It has the same keyboard programming as "One More Shot" C-BANK. :)
just checked roxanne’s first album. First song, called bad sister.
Dude, get your facts straight!
Where can I download this? Not on iTunes or any other sites..
Google search 😉
@oschvelez So true. The woman that invented freestyle is black.
The singer didn't produce the music! 🙄
Freestyle ?
Backbeat sounds alot like C-Bank One more shot. Yes yes, no no, maybe so so, oh no no....
=))))))
Why do you guys want her to rest in peace. She is not dead?? nowhere on the net she is said to have died, so why wishing that on her??
@oschvelez Freestyle was started by Blacks just like all other music. Its noted & agreed that the first Freestyle artist was Shanon. & Shanon is Black. Every song after that is a remix of her sound.
Arthur baker and John robie are not black! Think production! It's not all about who is singing? 😉
when you say freestyle do you mean her lyrics werent written? if so then this is amazinggg.
It's a genre of music. Electro and Freestyle are sort of related.. think planet rock and play at you own risk, both Arthur baker and John Robie productions!
i think it's the same beat ?
@oschvelez: Tell em bro!
@oschvelez the future
@Funkycraze And don't forget Joyce SImms (who is black)!
Although I dont agree with you on the rest.
@DeeXMan It's more of Electro Funk which is Hip Hop.......
Yeah but... freestyle emerged from planet rock/play at your own risk, both produced by Arthur baker and John robie!
@Funkycraze And don't forget Joyce SImms (who is black)!
Although I dont agree with you about Latinos making bad freestyle.
There are two types of Latin freestyle. Early 80s and late 80s 😉 the later stuff was more exclusively popular with Latinos! The earlier stuff more popular with non Latinos!
