How much do we spend on GROCERIES per week -- now that we're retired?

- Опубликовано: 1 окт 2024
- We've been retired for a few years and until now, we've never kept track of our food and grocery budget to determin if it is being covered by what we receive from Social Security.
We shop for our groceries at Walmart every week. This first week of August, 2024, we paid $202 for our weekly groceries. At the end of this month we will total our grocery bills for the entire month and determine if the total is being covered partially or fully by our monthly Social Security payments.
Please let us know in the comments section how your weekly and monthly grocery bills compare to ours.
Love seeing the Starsky and Hutch of you tube. Just not sure who's who though. Maybe you can do that slide across the hood of the car thing then I can figure it out. Lol😂
lol I don’t think either of us can slide anymore! 😳😂👍
And you're right corporate greed And gouging is the reason for our high prices at all the grocery stores.
😡👍
I live just north of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. There are very few food items I buy at Walmart. The food I get their own brands of food I do buy. I mostly shop at Aldi’s. They have a lot of off brands but the prices are so much better then Walmart. They also cater to people with food issues. Lots of lactose free, sugar free, gluten free foods. And their fresh produce is so much better than Walmart. Better quality food and much better prices.
Thanks for sharing that Tina. We have an Aldi across the street from our Walmart. I’ve tried shopping there twice and walked out with no food both times. I couldn’t find a single thing on my list and nothing that was cheaper than Walmart. The produce did look very good though, and I think the prices were pretty good. I think they were about the same as Walmart. I would imagine their fruit is probably better than Walmart, since I’ve never liked Walmart fruit thanks for sharing with us and glad you have a good option for groceries. 😄👍
You share anything you want and always nice to see Jim. Hello there. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Sally 😄👍
Good lord I remembered when a $100 was a month's worth of food and then some. I'm retired too and every week is a challenge buying groceries.
I know, right? Me too Ray! 😲
I'm recovering from Covid so seeing you made me feel better!! Love your videos ♥️
Thanks, Julie! I’m glad you are recovering. It took me almost 3 weeks but now I’m pretty much back to normal. I still can’t walk without getting out of breath and coughing, but hopefully in the next week or so that will improve too. 😄👍
Stop taking the jab and you won't get sick, everyone that's taken the jab is always sick.
Thank you, Steve and Jim!❤
Great video Steve and Jim!! I really enjoyed this one 😊 I've cut buying meat way down too. I had a health situation that put my bill paying way over what I'm used to. So of course the first thing to go is food. All I know is food insecurity is a real thing for us seniors. But we always land on our feet!! ❤❤❤ Thanks guys~ Joan
Thanks for sharing Joan. I hope all is OK now. 👍
Thanks for the heads up 👍
It always gets worse before it gets better Steve. But I go to a local food pantry to supplement and will apply for food stamps if I need to. Thank you and Jim for sharing your budgeting concerns too! It means alot 💞
👍👍
Your "ramblings" are delightful. Today, you have made me feel a little better. I have been really worried about how little meat I buy. The current prices just make it undesirable. As I frequently feed my grandchildren, I find I have had to learn more ways to ensure protein, iron, amino acids, and other nutrients are in our diets.
Thanks Sharon, that’s nice that you are making sure your grandkids get all the nutrients I need. It’s definitely not easy these days with corporations completely out of control when it comes to food prices! 😩
Progresso soup is literally water in a can. The price for a can of liquid...such a rip off.
I totally agree. I’m sure that’s the last time I will be buying it. 👍
Good morning to the both of you.😊
Good morning Dodie 👋
Hi Steve and Jim. I always shop at Walmart. I also go to other stores. But mostly I find what I need there. I’m not a big eater. So a good item I make can last a couple days. It’s fun to see how everyone shops! Good day nice video. 🛒🛍️🩵
Thanks, Linda, I agree, it’s interesting to see how different or how similar we all are when it comes to shopping and food. 😄👍
Those canned soups are high in sodium 😅
I know, but I don’t use them very often. 😲
Kudos to Jim. I adore bagels and cream cheese. We have a local business that has fresh bagels. Their 3 cheese and everything bagels are the bomb. Understand the diet issues....IBS and am prone to dehydration so have to watch electrolytes and protein. It's tough out there when you're retired. Medication on insurance is ridiculous.
Thanks for sharing with us, Angela! 👍
Progresso soup where I live is up to $3.99 a can! Unreal! I stopped buying.
Omg!! I thought $2.50 was insane! 😳🤪
Your grocery costs are almost double what I pay here in Tennesse and I grow a lot of my veggies in my garden (No chemicals or pesticides)!
Wow, that’s a huge difference. You are so lucky to be able to grow your own vegetables. That is awesome Thomas! 😄👍
The produce is great at Walmart. About 100$ per visit is normal for 2 people now. We get older & have to eat better.
If you are only paying $100 a week for two people that’s half of what we are paying. You are very lucky. 👍
Wow a few minutes in and I think Walmart is expensive, are they the only store available in your area? Your diets are interesting, lol.
No, we have lots of grocery stores here in Palm Springs. Walmart is the cheapest. 😳👍
Aww nice video steve we shop at Asda which is Walmart on you side our shopping 🛒. Bill is about £70 to £85 a week. Good to see Jim and nice to see that your looking much better thanks 🤞😁
Thank you and thanks for sharing Tom! 😄👍
Seems food prices have noticeably increased in the past year or so!
They sure have 😳😩
Steve and Jim ❤❤❤😮😮😮😊😊😊
Hi Mr. Steve/Mr. Jim 👋 far as I see, prices here in the great Peach 🍑 State of Georgia 🍑 are about the same. Mom & I shop at Wal-Mart every 3 weeks and normally spend between $189-$210. Maybe purchase 1 pack of meat. I love how you two shop. Mr. Jim buy healthier foods, and you more junk foods. However, you walk off the calories. Okay, I loved the video. That was fun.
Take care, and I can't wait to see the next video. ❤🎉❤🎉
Thanks Janice, your prices sound pretty reasonable. 😄👍
I love watching you Steve and jim xxxxx
Thank you so much Susan! 😄
Average $400 a month and that includes meat this is for two people and a lot of times it will carry over to the next month. I go to different stores I shop a lot at Dollar Store ,Family dollar, Giant Eagle,Aldi. And I have an Amish dent and bent right below my house and I get most of my canned goods and things like that from them that can of Progresso soup you showed I can get down there for 79 cents and that's even going to I used to get it for 70 but anyway that's what I spend in my little corner of Pennsylvania
That is awesome, Debbie! You are a super shopper! Thanks for sharing that with us and for the inspiration! 😄👍
@@theretiredlifewithsteve thank you I find what the price of food these days you just have to shop around in my area there's approximately 5 or 6 dent and bent stores that's what we call them they're run by the Amish all the food is good there may be a dent in the can but the food is not compromised and it helps them out also I'm a firm believer in shop where you live in the long run it helps the community
Ice cream cookies sugar sugar sugar salt all terrible for you. I eat a lot of salads zucchini I just froze 2 loaves of zucchini bread. Always spinage vegi with a protein fresh nothing from a can corn on the cob but I cook and take off cob eat well try better as we age
Trust me groceries are going up every month I know
😡
How the hell do you eat all of that crap and stay thin🤣🤣🤣
Bob V.
Hi Bob, lol I walk a few miles every day and I really just eat very small portions. 😄👍
The two of you make me laugh 🤣 😂. Here’s a question, Why does Jim buy Lactaid milk but then he buys cheese, pudding and cream cheese? He’s not allergic to milk is he? Is Lactaid more healthy? But it doesn’t look like he’s worried about being healthier. Just curious 👀
Hi Denise, we discovered years ago that lactate free milk can last for months in the refrigerator without spoiling. It seems that lactate is what causes the milk to spoil sometimes within just a few days. So that’s why we both get it. Neither of us is lactose intolerant. We made a video about this, but I think it was a couple years ago. Thanks for asking. 😄👍
Ahhhhh you answered my question
@@theretiredlifewithsteveI love Almond milk a whole lot better and it last a long time too. I’ll have to go check to see how much that is?
The sour cream in the tube is a lot better. The problem with the tub is every time you open it and or insert a spoon you risk contaminating it with mold. This does not happen with the tube and it last a lot longer.
Excellent point. I didn’t think of that. 😄👍
Grocery stores are very greedy. They price gauge, the Walton family has no morals no scruples. Billion of dollars in profits. I may add,all big box grocery stores are just like Walmart. Greedy.
Very hard to stop eating crunch n munch in the late 70’ s there was the same thing called yellow zonkers they were my favorite every now and then I will pick them up at dollar
Funny you should mention Screaming Yellow Zonkers, I just googled them a couple of days ago to see if they were still around. 😂
😂👍
I know, right? 😂
Walmart is Asda over here in the UK! It's definitely good value! Hope you and Jim are well! Xx
Thanks for sharing that Naomi. I didn’t know that. 👍
As long as Newsom is the Gov of California prices are going to go up, the $20 an hour for fast food workers is causing major price increases in fast food and he wants to increase the wages again, 75 billion in debt and rising, sorry to talk politics here but its the truth, Steve I hope you are feeling better.
Hi Ace, talking politics is fine. I don’t blame the politicians, though I blame corporate greed. These corporations are making billions by not paying workers a living wage. Increasing the minimum wage does absolutely nothing to hurt the corporations. It just gives them an excuse to raise the prices, and I’m happy to see that lots of consumers have decided to stop eating at some of these restaurants refuse to pay their workers minimum wage. Anyway, I’m always on the side of the workers and not the corporations and blame. The politicians. Just always seems to be a very convenient way to shift the blame away from who it really should be directed to. Just my opinion lol. 😄👍
@@theretiredlifewithsteve Well Nensom raised the wage and hes a politician but I agree that corporate greed is also to blame, when it will stop who knows but so many restaurants are closing or filing for bankruptcy since the wage hike and I have heard that AI will be used to save millions in the fast food chains as it will take your drive through orders costing many people their jobs. Oh well Steve we need more PS videos to forget about what is happening lol!!
I know, AI is very scary! :-O I'm still not well enough to walk, but hopefully in the next week or so I can start taking walks again! :-)
@@theretiredlifewithsteve Great get better Steve we need our PS fix!!
Here in Gettsburg Steve Walmart food is expensive I never go there for food
Hi Alex, wow, here they are the least expensive. I just assumed they were the most affordable place to shop all over the country. Thanks for the heads up. 😲👍
@theretiredlifewithsteve I guess it depends on the location everything else is reasonable just the food is pricey
Good morning Steve and Jim I shop at Walmart very minimal items milk bacon eggs the bulk of the shopping is HEB it’s based out of San Antonio they’ve built stores near us spend 150 to 200 a week at HEB for a family of three on some times shop at dollar tree for miscellaneous food items great video thank you both for sharing
Thanks for sharing with us, Dannette 😄👍
@@theretiredlifewithsteveyou’re welcome I agree with you I don’t buy TP every week lol I like these videos glad you are feeling better
My fridge grapes watermelon strawberries blueberries frozen fruit as well cantaloupe in fridge now. Steak chicken tritium turkey ground turkey because burgers
You are very disciplined, definitely a lot healthier than me. 👍
I do most of my grocery shopping at Trader Joe’s and around here they seem to be the cheapest place to shop. The only price increase I’ve noticed in the past few years is that their bottles of seltzer went from 89 cents to 99 cents, but that’s it. Sometimes I can get produce cheaper at another grocery store, but not by a significant amount. I also don’t eat meat which really cuts down my grocery bill- beans and tofu are still cheap.
You are very lucky Shannon. I like Trader Joe’s too. Unfortunately, there’s only one in Palm Springs and it’s all the way at the other end of town about a half hour away so we rarely go there. 🙁
I love the way Jim plans his meals and actually sticks with it. I usually just pick up whatever catches my eye, then I end up throwing away most of the produce because I don't get around to eating it.
Steve, you spent about $1.10 per roll for TP. A 30-roll pkg of Amazon Basics (which will be delivered to you, and last much longer than a 12-roll pkg) breaks down to about .84 per roll. You could. save .26 per roll + gas + time...
Hi Debi, that is awesome! Thank you for the heads up. It never occurred to me to look on Amazon. 🤪 I wonder if the quality is just as good? The next time I order toilet paper, I will take your suggestion and do it from Amazon and do a comparison between the two. I think this would make a great video as well. I’ll give you a shout out in the video. I bet there are a lot of viewers like me who just never think of looking on Amazon for products like this. At least I hope I’m not the only one lol. 😆 I have enough toilet paper to last me about six months so it may be a while before I do this video but I’m definitely adding it to my list. Thanks for the idea. 😄👍
Have you considered Sam's Club? I believe there's one in Palm Desert. My companion and I shop similar, each buying their own groceries. We bought a promotional membership in January for 50% off. I was against the whole buying-in-bulk thing initially, but have gotten used to it and I now see the benefits. Just a suggestion.
Thanks for the suggestion S! Unfortunately, it’s about a half hour away from where we live and we downsize to a small home, so we just don’t have the space to buy in bulk, otherwise we would definitely make the trip down there at least once a month for Sam’s Club and Costco. I did try it years ago, but Jim was totally against it. Who knows, maybe I will try it again. Thanks. 😄👍
I am in Northumberland in England
I've been to traders joe's twice this week about 30 each visit
That seems pretty good! 👍
lol u got half less and paid equiv junk food is expensive
I eat grapenuts cereal wheat cereal no added sugar cereals
I shop at the Aldi’s in Palm Springs! I like the values there, but I don’t know how they compare to Walmart!
Thanks for sharing that Jim. I’ve tried shopping at Aldi‘s a couple of times, but I’ve never found anything there that was cheaper than Walmart.
I live between two Safeway stores, so I usually shop at one or the other once a week or every other week. Produce on Wheels about twice a month, which often gets shared with others. Plus splitting mega pack purchases at Costco made by family and friends. Think I get the best of all worlds. I eat well. Can’t wait to see your results! ❤️ Paul
That does sound like a good deal, Paul! 😄👍
I appreciate you sharing the prices and the what you shop for. I like Jim's salads and grapes and I have an incredible sweet tooth too so I am a combination of you both, ha ha! Price differences are so odd. For instance, I am hooked on these stick pretzels called Dots. One Walmart I went to was selling the bag was 6.98. Two days later I was in another Walmart, in a different part of town, and their price was 6.48. Bad enough paying over $6 for pretzels but to raise a store price by .50? They are very good pretzels though. Thanks again you too 🙂
Thanks for sharing that Maxine 😲🙃😄👍
My husband and I spend around $300 a month, just food, not vitamins. I grow a garden and it helps save money and my sanity. Off season our grocery bill easily around $550 a month.
That is excellent, Sarah! I envy people who live in areas where they can have gardens. 👍
For just 2 of us we usually spend about 300 a month. I do a lot of cooking for 2 days mostly beans with rice and add a meat. My hubby loves soups and stews so it's really easy and cheap to use the crock pot. Not many convenience items, frozen burritos or Mac and cheese. I have heartburn issues too Steve, so I have to watch what I eat versus what my husband eats. I'm also diabetic so no sugar/ very little sugar stuff for me. We try to stay away from the store bc it's getting too expensive! I've noticed that Walmart is trending towards national brand and the Great Value brand is getting harder to find in many of the things I buy. We buy a lot of things in bulk like rice, beans, sugar, flour etc. Also shop at Aldi's for our canned goods and some meats.
Wow, that is excellent dtfg! Congrats on being such a good shopper and for being able to make your own Mills that way! Inspiring! 😄👍
This was an interesting video. It will be something to see how much you do spend in the month. And if Jim has prices recorded from years gone by... we all may be in for a shock 😲 🫨 🫢 😐 😳 🙄
I know, right? 😳
Hi Steve! If you ever decide to go shopping at Trader Joe's there's one item you should NOT buy. That item is eggs. Trader Joe's for whatever reason will not be transparent about how their eggs are processed. Because of this I think it best to buy your eggs elsewhere.
Thanks for the heads up Arthur! 😳👍
I buy the store brand everything except soda. I always have. Even before the price gouges. Prices are starting to go down. I am in the Midwest.
That’s nice to hear the prices are starting to go down Trr. That’s not happening here yet, but hopefully. Thanks for sharing that. 😄👍
I just checked the Great Value applesauce price here in Southern Oregon; $2.24 (so .10 less)
Interesting. Thanks for sharing that with us, Debi! 😄👍
I am trying to streamline what I need for myself just being alone.
Walmart is good for a lot of different things.
I get chocolate jello’s for snacks. It actually hasn’t changed since I was a kid. Tastes good.
I don’t like to cook anymore
I like the taco salad ingredients
I use cherubs
I thought you shopped very similar to my taste.
Thanks for sharing Cheri. 😄👍
Steve, did you say that Jim worked all his life as an accountant? He really knows his numbers and has great recall as to how much things now cost and use to cost. Does anyone else feel like they wish they would have had Jim as their accountant? I bet he could have really kept my accounts perfect down to the penny!
Yes, he was an accountant for his entire career and I feel very lucky to have a personal accountant in the house lol! 😄👍
I just bought the $1 Powerade at Walmart today, too! I love these shopping videos 👍
Glad you like them lam! 😄👍
I used to buy my meat 🍖 from Walmart but it's high $$$ now I buy my meat 🍖 at Meijer. More chipper.
Thanks for the heads up Jerry 👍
Hi Steve you both shop very healthy 🧑🍳Jim’s diet is spicy the ingredients would go crazy. I understand why you shop seperate I couldn’t eat spicy things but Jim has a good balance diet I buy stuff like you Steve low fat I love salad in summertime it too hot to eat hot foods I would love to food hot and spicy 🥹I would bee in hospital hay you too are nice and healthy man
Thanks for watching and sharing Kathleen ! 😄👍
I buy Cafe’ Vienna! Drink it everyday, all year round and have been, for like…20 years! I thought I was the only one! 🤭
Wow Jim is catching up with you lol! 😆👍
I'm guessing you guys might be limited to grocery stores around you as I see you by a lot of Walmart and great value brand items Which I think are overpriced. I'm fortunate within a handful of miles from my house I have a Costco a Safeway a Raley's / Bel Air and a save mart so I keep up on their weekly sales stock up and save quite a bit of money on groceries. I really do think it's great the way you guys have an understanding with your relationship and it works well for you.
You are lucky to have so many affordable options near you tripper! 😄👍
i used to make tacos with huge cheddar 2 lbs ground beef lawry's taco seasoning lettuce ortega taco shells from ralphs on e palm cyn and sunrise loved making mexican food but stopped long time ago gained too much weight love everything you bought but can't eat any of it cause of 2 issues toilets and clothes
That sounds so good Charlene! 😄👍
I spend about $125 a week on groceries. I eat pretty basically but so much of what I eat has to be imported. I have seen prices climbing quite steadily in the last few years to be sure. For the Thai diet staples like rice or cup of noodles or cooking oil the government maintains price controls to keep food prices low for the average person.
That seems very reasonable. Especially with a house full of cats to feed lol. And that’s awesome that the government does that. More good reasons to live there. By the way, we love watching house hunters international, and lately we’ve been binge watching lots of them from Thailand. It’s fun to see all of the different houses over there for sale and rent. 😄👍
I love you both!! But not a fan of walmart! 🌺
Walmart is more expensive in you area on some things. We live in Oregon. Thanks for sharing! Take care & enjoy your haul!jim ha ha!
Thanks for sharing that with us Ann. I’ve noticed that their prices seem to be going up quite a bit lately. 😩
I love you guys doing this. This will be so interesting when you compare the years. I do know there were several items the same here in Utah as there and plus we have to pay a food tax
Thanks for sharing Carrie. I can’t remember now if we pay taxes on food or not. I think we do on some items.
So basically 800 a month between the 2 of you. We're at 6 hundred a month then like milk a few extra items to get thru the month but no garbage food no cookies chocolate ect fresh fruit frim fruit produce store
That sounds pretty good, Jeff. You are lucky that you don’t have a sweet tooth like me. 😲
It's so hard to budget food today cuz it goes up every week anywhere from 4:10 to 10 every single week so it's so hard to stay in your budget
I agree, Linda. It’s pretty hard to believe that corporations are doing this to their customers. 😲
Wouldn't shop at Walmart.
We try to do a Sams Club trip every 6mos and TISSUE is like $32😢 and we have to buy 3packs for 3 floors. Now it seems a $300 trip is now $300 every 3-4 mos. Even Aldi has gone up. RAISIN BRAN IS $8 here in Chicago. I almost cried😂😅
Omg, eight dollars for a box of cereal! 😩 corporate grade is completely out of control! 😡 thanks for sharing that with us TT! 👍
@@theretiredlifewithsteve I do alot of instacarting as spare income and I spend alot of time in grocery stores. Its depressing how high prices have risen
I shop like Jim. It's all about convenience! #teamjim
lol 😄👍
that's cheap for $100 all that stuff
I buy zero sugar beverages or dollar tree Amazon singles on the go for a water bottle sugar free diabetic. So no sugar no salt I don't salt my food miss dash seasoning
That sounds very healthy 👍
My husband and I mostly shop Smart & Final in Highland, TJs in Redlands or Grocery Outlet in Rialto. I try to get to Ralph's here in San Bernardino for their $5 rotisserie chicken on Thursdays. We spend about $150-$175 a week. BTW, the reason why your jugged milk sours quicker is that the milk is exposed to light. All the best to you and Jim.
Thanks for sharing that with us 1. You sound like you are a good shopper. 😄👍
You can put that sour milk to good use by using it to make pancakes.@theretiredlifewithsteve
We have a place in NY state but we live in NJ. I find somethings fluctuate in price but a little other than gas. Should be interesting to see your results. 💁🏻♀️🛒
Thanks for sharing Mary! 😄👍
Hi Jim and Steve, I am very surprised that the grocery prices are pretty much the same here in PA as they are there. I was expecting prices to be higher there, like just about everything else is in CA.
I do not have a budget for our grocery bill. I spend on average between $250 to $400 a week. The variation in the cost is non food items like paper towels etc and food, treats and litter for 4 cats.
At the height of the pandemic prices for groceries really skyrocketed. Then they started coming down a little bit slowly, now I noticed that some ate creeping back up again. For instance Oscar Meyer center cut bacon was almost $14 for 12oz pkg. Then it slowly went down to $7 then back up to $7.48 now.
I shop like Jim does for the convenience! And I love my fruits and vegetables. I very rarely buy store brand groceries. For instance look at the ingredients in great value brand vanilla ice cream. It has cellulose gel, cellulose gel, cellulose gum and guar gum just to name a few. Where as Breyers ingredients are milk, cream, sugar, vegetable gum and natural vanilla. Those ingredients are a tad scary Steve! We need to stay healthy at our ages.
Have a great weekend guys, peace...
Hi Stacy, thank you for sharing. I’m surprised that our prices aren’t higher here too. Although they are mostly from what they were a year or two ago. I never compared the ingredients on the ice creams. I just assumed they were all the same. I will definitely start checking that out. Thanks for the heads up. 😳👍
Loved this video! & thank you & Jim for sharing to us! Always great videos no matter what u do!
So true about the corperate greed! I couldnt believe I spent 5.99 on some butter in Ralphs last nite! (Just example!)
Prices are annoying💲👎🏻
Thank you, Andrea and thank you for sharing with us! 😳😄👍
@@theretiredlifewithsteve You're welcome. I wanted to do the survey u posted about SSI .. but sorry couldn't find it .
Do you and Jim go to Local Farmers Market??
I’ve tried, but the prices are just unbelievably ridiculous. Everything is quadruple the price that you would pay for the exact same thing in the grocery store. 😩
Thanks for this video of you two! But... yes there is a but. Steve, you really need to incorporate fruits & more veggies into your diet. I can guarantee your grocery bill would be cut in half if you had more fresh produce & less boxed/canned items. I didn't think they still made Chef Boyardee! I used to eat it as a kid. But it's kid food as it lacks most nutrients & is highly processed. I know I eat unlike 99.99% of others, but it's kept me very healthy & w/out the need of meds for lifestyle diseases most seniors have, due to their SAD (standard American diet) way of eating. I encourage you to eliminate those processed foods as much as you can, not make it a staple, just have occasionally. Check on YT for many lectures/info from Dr Michael Greger, Dr Klaper, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn or watch Forks over Knives. Any of these doctors can direct you in a healthier direction. Sending you both hugs & kisses and great health! xoxo💙
Hi cct, I appreciate the concern. I was afraid that everyone was going to get the wrong idea by this video. 80% of my diet is veggies. I just didn’t happen to need any this week other than the broccoli and lettuce. I rarely eat those raviolis or soup or canned veggies. Those cans of raviolis will probably last me a few months. I do have a sweet tooth though. But like I said in the video, I eat very little of the sweets so everything I bought will last me for months. This really wasn’t a typical shopping week for me. I probably should’ve waited to make this until it was a healthy shopping week lol. It looked worse than it is lol! 😄👍
@@theretiredlifewithsteve I do remember a few other videos where you showed what you eat and it included lots of veggies. A good thing! Okay, apologies if I came off preachy (the vegan in me & mama bear) but just trying to help others with nutrition. Not everyone, just ones that I like, like you! If you eat 80% with fresh produce etc, you'll be ahead of the game. Everyone needs to splurge for sure, and the sweet tooth... well I got one or two of those myself so understand that sugar fix haha. Just one more thing, another video had Mason eating a veg burger, but saw him salt it as he would take a bite. Please try to discourage him from that habit, he's too young to have hypertension. It's an easy habit to get into once it's implemented. Just want him nice & healthy as he's a beautiful young man💙
By the way, does the CRV fee have to do with recycling?🤔
Yes, sorry we should have mentioned that! 👍
Do you or Jim buy in bulk. Such as rice, flour, macaroni ect ?

Hi Steve. Do you and Jim shop at Costco?
Unfortunately, our Costco is about a half hour away from us. So about an hour round-trip. And Jim hates to buy in bulk. So it hasn’t worked for us. 🙁
I didn't see any meat that's where the price goes up. A chuck roast is at least $15 so I stick to pork or chicken and crave beef constantly.
With beef, our budget probably would’ve doubled lol! 😲

That’s interesting to hear Stephen. Thanks for sharing that with us from down under! 😄👍
We spend about $200 every time I go to the grocery store like once every two or three days and there’s just two people. But we don’t shop at Walmart. We don’t like their politics with Trump and the GOP so we stay clear of that store.
I know what you mean Kristen, but I’ve discovered over the years that almost all of the large corporations give equally to Republicans and Democrats. For most businesses it’s just about the bottom line. so we just shop at whoever has the lowest prices.
@@theretiredlifewithsteve well that’s true too ❤️
Hope your feeling better Steve 🤗 nice to see jim to
A little bit better day. Thanks, Karen. 😄👍
Can you go to Whole Foods or Trader Joe?
Unfortunately, Trader Joe’s is about a half hour away and Whole Foods is about 45 minutes to an hour away from where we live. I do like Trader Joe’s a lot and wish they had one near our house. Whole Foods is just way too expensive though. I really resent how the manufactures of healthy food remove all the expensive ingredients like sugar and then double the price! 😳😲
Great video
Thanks Martha!
Hi Steve. I enjoy seeing what people buy at the grocery. I’m wondering if you’ve ever used any of those rebate apps like ibotta? I have downloaded a few and don’t let them guide what I plan to buy but I will check to see if what I got has a rebate. They do Walmart rebates. Sometimes they offer for the store brands too, not as often but sometimes. I just thought I’d mention that. I’m glad to see you and Jim seem to have recovered. Have a great day!
Hi Rosemary, I have tried. I bought it and some of the other apps, but I’ve never been able to save any money using them. I typically buy the great value store brand which is usually a lot cheaper than the deals offered with these apps plus they seem to be a lot of extra work. I guess it just depends on what you buy at the store. It seems like some people save a lot of money using them though. 😄👍
@@theretiredlifewithsteve Makes sense to me. Have a great day!
I grew up eating a lot of store brand items so it doesn't bother me to buy and use them. I do compare prices and will buy what costs less. I spend about $90 a week. I dont go to Walmart very much. I shop at Winn Dixie for the most part. I've been shopping there for years and know how to shop them to get value for my money. 😊
That’s great that you have an affordable option in Virginia. We don’t have Winn-Dixie here in Southern California. 🙁
@@theretiredlifewithsteve I'm in Florida. I've been shopping Winn Dixie since I moved out on my own in 1977 at 19. ✌️👌👍

Good morning Thomas 👋
Green grapes here are $4.23 for a 2.5 lb bag. I want to get some moon drop grapes aka sweet sapphire grapes but I'll have to get them from Kroger.
Enjoyed this video. I need to look Jim’s taco salad recipe
