Good evening Calvin and Marie. Enjoyed watching this video. Great storage ideas. I store my beans, rice, cornmeal, flour, oats, grits and dry goods in our deep freezer or our 2nd fridge if we're going to use them soon. Yes, cook the pinto beans. I also use food sealer. I wanted to get some food grade buckets with the screw on lids also. I absolutely believe in prepping for the future. Have a Blessed week. 😊
Prepping is always a smart idea. My husband and I did more back during the covid pandemic than we do now. With the price of groceries it's making it a little bit harder to keep ahead but I don't ever let my pantry get empty. We have a food sealer machine too and I really love it it will especially keep your meats fresher a lot longer. I keep a lot of my dried beans and things like that and the old glass jars with the screw on lids.
For those of us who can no longer garden or preserve food by canning, this is very useful. I do stock my pantry with canned goods and will now store cornmeal, flour and other baking essentials in the freezer zippered plastic bags. Pancake and cake mixes too. 😋😋 Thanks Calvin.
❤ Cook the beans please. Calvin, you are doing a great job by sharing yours and Marie’s prepping system and not just looking out for yourself and maybe your family, but thinking about whomever might come across the food should something happen to you and Marie, God forbid. You are both truly good, godly and salt of the earth people. Thank you for sharing your info and time with us. ❤️🙏🏻
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ the freezer deal may be to kill any insect that may be inthe food item before they can destroy the food. Lots of grains have insects in it.
Hello from KY love you and your channel and your family ❤️.Calvin I loved this video. That was very interesting.Who would think that package of rice would go bad.And it eating that aluminum off the bag.😬
Thank you for this video Calvin. I never thought of putting a variety of items in a 5-gal bucket, but I love that idea! As a single person, it makes more sense for me to do something like that instead of say a 5-lb bucket of just beans. I would love to see you cook those beans. Do you think it would be best to cook them in a crockpot? Also, would you be able to use a recipe for them where you use other prepping food too, like a ‘completely from the pantry’ type meal?
Really enjoy learning from both of you. Would really like to see video of Calvin removing air from zip lock bags. Myself I have difficulty at times. Thank you for sharing!
Yes i would love this and all the information you have given me so excited I just started prepping 4 months ago and I've got about 2 years worth I think but you have excited me because we are senior citizens we are on a budget and I'm so excited to see what y'all have done and I can't wait I want to get some 5-gallon buckets now I am dying to get 5 gallon buckets❤❤❤
You and Marie did a great job prepping. A great way to keep your mason jars from breaking is to keep the jars in the same cardboard box they came in. Take care, be safe, God bless!
Food Saver bags - I always buy my bags for vacuum sealing from Amazon for much cheaper and have never had problems with them. I am a senior too and have been prepping for about 6 years.
Thanks Calvin. Your info is always useful. I can’t buy a bunch but I do buy in bigger pkgs and break it down. I use 1/2 gal. mason jars to store rice and oatmeal and the likes. It’s a little cheaper. Hope you n Marie are having a good start to your week. Have a Blessed evening!🌻✨
Also, when I use Ziplock bags for storage I stick a drinking straw in the open corner and suck out all the remaining air, then remove the straw real fast and finish closing the bag!
To store longterm, put an oxygen absorber in everything and store in cool, dark, dry areas, 50 to 75 degrees. Light, moisture, heat and air degrade food over time. To help soften beans stored a long time, put 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of baking soda in cooking water.
Thanks for passing along so many great storage ideas. I'm moving in a few wks. My things will go into storage until I find a new home. This will help me with some storage ideas. Although hopefully no more than 3 months. Weather your long term prepping or short term storage great info. Thanks for sharing. Love all of you & Marie's videos. God bless & keep the video's coming.🙏🤗♥️
I'm a new subscriber and I just adore y'alls channel. I've been watching a whole bunch of them over the weekend. I would love to see y'all make those beans. That note was so sweet that Marie put in the container.
I always keep flour in the freezer. The weevils can already be in there, they don't have to get in there later. You don't need to thaw it out - it does not clump in the freezer.
You may know this already but you can buy bulk foods from the LDS that are packed to last 20-30 years in #10 cans at a pretty decent price. I’ve bought some wheat berries as they are supposed to last better than flour already milled. Working on learning to make bread from flour I ve milled myself. They also have pasta and freeze dried foods. Great video!
Thank you for sharing how you store your food in the bucket. I love the note in the bucket. I am going to use freezer bags like you showed. I put bay leaves in my bucket to help keep bugs and mice away.
That buttermilk mix won’t last as long outside if a freezer because it has a fat content. It will go rancid. Plain flour will last a couple years if vacuum sealed. Just like brown rice won’t last as long as white rice because it has higher fat.
Hi Calvin thank you for all the info on how to store your food. I like the bucket idea and the freezer bags this should help to save money and all the food . Thank you. Gypsy from Michigan.
I'm fascinated that you talk about canning things, over here, Australia, we use something called a fowlers vacola outfit, which has glass bottles, lids, rubber seal rings and clips. The jars are put into water, its brought to a certain temperature , kept there for a period, cooled and there you go. They keep for a long time.
Thank you beautiful couple for all the great storage and prepping ideas. If you have time and would like to share your cooking video with the beans that would be wonderful. Thank you!!!
Hi Calvin! Thank you for this video. a few years back I had a 2lb. bag of pinto beans that I had had for several years. I cooked them for hours on end, and they wouldn't get soft. I looked it up on the internet and it said to add alittle baking soda to them. It worked. they got soft.
Thank you for all of the this great information. I never thought about taking like pasta out of the boxes and bagging them. Yes cook the beans 🫘 😅...Mrs.Steve
Yes, I would love to see you cook the beans!!! I just got a food saver for Christmas & I love it! I use it for mainly freezer food, but I wouldn't be against storing beans, etc, this route. We rent & really don't have much room to keep things, but I'll figure it out. I might look into the cost of renting a climate controlled storage unit. It's probably too expensive, but I'll look. Obviously, everything that's not in cans would go into buckets or plastic storage boxes if we go that route.
That was very informative, thank you! Actual ideas which I will definitely use. You just inspired me to start storing food ourselves. Living on a farm, you never know what lies ahead. Great videos, keep going ❤ and God bless 🤗
I would definitely like to see you cook the beans. I was prepping for a while but then, I had a death in the family and moved so I lost a lot of my stuff. I need to restart and live in an RV not much room
Good show! Wow, 11 years on the food stored and still going strong. I haven’t tried Mylar yet. Just using our food saver with their bags or ball glass jars.
I liked how you sealed your bag of beans, rice & more in ziploc type bags. We use our Food Saver for meats also, and that has saved us a lot of money because we buy the meats when they're on sale. I have sealed beans, candy, crackers, cookies & more in wide mouth glass canning jars. We bought some Christmas Hershey Kisses & other candy on sale & immediately stored them in the jars. We checked them a few months back & they look & taste like we just bought them. We're careful to not store anything with too much oil in it for long term since we keep the jars on our shelves... We'd like to see you cook the pinto beans.
Wow!! The fact that the only thing that was bad was 1 bag of rice! That had to be a fluke. Maybe a tiny bit of air or something got in. It's still amazing! I would love to see if the pinto beans are still good. Just seeing this, I'm inspired to start prepping seriously. You hear that things can last for years and years, but it seems hard to believe. Well, I believe it now. God bless ya'll.
Yes, cook those beans .....I'm sure they with be good .....I prep and put up too ....I might get me a food saver too ..... I am going to start putting my sugar and flour in glass jars too. I want to be rid of Tupperware because I have started noticing an odor in them. I guess it's because they are old.
I so love that you had Marie put that note in the bucket of food. What a wonderful and useful thing to pass on to others especially in need.
You are so welcome!
