Islam found the right techniques over time. That entire finishing was a thing of beauty that you will see from very few in MMA.
I’ve never been so impressed by Islam. A lot of things went wrong for him; but not only did he find a way to win, he landed sweet combos against the best boxer in the division, and ended up choking him unconscious.

Makhachev's last takedown was actually crazy unique and creative, big props to the man undoubtedly the best lightweight in the world.
It's a variation of the Russian Tie Snap, except with the leg instead of the arm, beautiful technique, very high level

interestingly enough that technique may have originated from Tai Chi, a martial art commonly associated with old Chinese ladies in the park. There's a video by Ramsey Dewey on the origins of that takedown specifically.

Yeah that was very noticeable. He threw one kick (which looked surprisingly fast) in round 1 and never saw him throw a kick again. Which is weird because it’s normally a big part of his game. Likely due to the staph infection.

I noticed a few things with Islam this fight:
1. His boxing has improved A LOT. He was dodging and slipping many punches and utilized the uppercut very well.
2. He looked weaker than normal. Not too much power behind the punches.
3. He didnt throw many knees but clinched a lot. Makes me think he was baiting Dustins knee so he could do a takedown but dustin never threw knee.
4. He barely kicked.
5. He seemed off overall. Makes me think the staph infections rumors are true.
Either way i want to see 1 more lightweight defense and then double champ status insha Allah.

5:50, i feel like islam is more of a take chances and give up position for submission type of grappler, khabib was more pure CONTROL and ground and pound, almost never gave up position for any submission besides against gaethje at the peak of his evolution though. islam isnt as good or at least consistent at keeping control but i feel like hes more dangerous submission wise than khabib, he submitted oliveira and poirier, hooker, and a bunch of other guys now, in any given round he will take you down and submit you if u give anything to him, khabib will do more of a beatdown.

Dustin was always gonna strike hesitantly and hold back on combos bc of the threat of the takedown. So naturally Islam can be far more aggressive which leads to landing more strikes. Not taking away anything from Islam. His striking is elite level but you have to realize it’s bc of how well rounded he is and can implement a takedown at any time making his opponents defensive. In this fight, Islam = quantity strikes. Dustin = quality strikes

@@everydaffodil5344Leon is a black belt and actually very good off of his back. He’s very well rounded. He also has elite takedown defense against the cage and that’s where Islam likes to get his takedowns the most. For the most part any time Islam shot in the middle of the cage Dustin was able to defend pretty easily.

i know this is will all be nitpicking but i still hope islam puts on a grappling masterclass in his next fight and more people accept this one as an off night. i’m probably being overprotective because i am muslim
but anyways like khabib also had dustin’s back in the first and didn’t get the finish. plus when they both faced tibau, khabib had his least impressive win and went to decision while islam finished him in the first minute. this wasn’t grappling but still shows how they each have their advantages over the other
focusing back on the grappling, i always thought of makhachev as “just a *smidgen* below khabib” and i think he has showcased that enough, even at 302. again both islam and khabib had 1st round submission attempts be unsuccessful, still showed moderate success grappling, and eventually got the finish. khabib maintained control better and did get the submission earlier, but that’s fair for being a smidgen better
with all that said, i believe makhachev has stayed properly rated throughout because i don’t think anyone genuinely thought he was exactly as good as khabib in grappling specifically
in conclusion, i love both khabib and islam, they make me happy, they are both top ten goats with islam having top 5 potential, and i will do everything to avoid using staph as an excuse ❤️ :)
