What people don’t understand is that championship level fighters moving up a weight class (at least for the lighter weight classes) brings a new level of skill to the heavier division
Volk in the first Islam fight and Max vs Gaethje proved that. Aljo proved that against Kattar. Figgy proved it against Font and Garbrandt. Conor and Alvarez going back a few years. And even not taking into account recent things or championship level fighters, Dustin and Charles moving up made waves at LW
Yeah Islam has taken the toughest possible test available at the time in his recent fights, the opponent deemed most likely to be able to beat him. Charles, seen at the time as greatest LW ever. Who pulled out of rematch btw. Volk, at the time the p4p king of the sport, who used to compete at WW and has said he’s the biggest FW, who was in home turf and had zero pressure, nothing to lose. Volk again, who had done spectacularly well (but did definitely lose) against Islam first time. Now Dustin mostly due to scheduling but hey, he’s a hall of fame legend with a ton of huge, huge wins and deserves his top ranking. Islam gets so much unfair criticism it’s actually disturbing to me coz feels like it has to be coming from a place of xenophobia. “He’s so inactive only fights once a year”. Spend a few seconds googling to discover he fights twice a year every year. “He’s a weight bully”. Weighs in at the precise same weight as every opponent (end of story) plus if he mentions moving up to 170 gets criticised coz he hasn’t cleaned out the division yet. “Boring crotch-sniffing style” - actually submits or KOs most opponents and has just an absolutely stellar all-round skillset which should be a lesson to anyone in the sport. He’s not a favourite of mine, and not in my top 10 GOAT list yet, but I often feel compelled to defend him because the reasons people give for hating him are number 1 bs, they’re lying to themselves.

I’m curious where you’d have Robert Whittaker? He’s a former champ, got wins over Yoel Romero twice, Paulo Costa, Jared Cannonier, Marvin Vettori, a better version of Darren Till, a good version of Kelvin Gastelum, Derek Brunson, Jacare Souza and I’d count that rematch with Izzy as a win.
He’s been beat and had a mediocre start to his career at WW, but that was well before his prime, but at MW he’s only lost to champs. The guy is my favorite fighter and I love the guy so I have some bias, but I think his resume gives Fedor a run for his money. Id say he’s probably top 20-25 at least.
If he gets past Khamzat how does that change it? What if he’s able to get the belt back? Curious to hear your thoughts.

Eh belts and title defences have some credibility but it’s still dependent upon the performance. Plus while Lucas does have some wack takes his one on Izzy being a 1-1 robbery master in his title reign ain’t wrong in my opinion.

Both beat Paulo but this one Izzy did look more impressive, albeit Paulo looked way better in the Whittaker fight.

Izzy went to war with Kelvin Gastelum, Rob schooled him for 5 rounds.
Honestly I think Rob has an argument for being better than Izzy legacy wise. Plus Bobby Knuckles accepts any challenge in his way, anybody given to him if it gets him closer to the title, whereas Izzy seems to pick fights more and get infinite title shots.

You gotta count GSP beating former multiple former defending strikeforce world champions such as Jake shields and Nick diaz highly aswell. When the UFC bought strikeforce, almost every single individual weightclass had a 1 or more strikeforce guys as champ at some point. They were easily a UFC-level organization in terms of top-tier talent
Lucas thinks that Izzy doesn't deserve top 15 for having close decisions but at least a third of the guys here got decisions that you could score differently and also got worse competitions
