The only actor who could have played Vince Lombardi.
Amen!
Martin Balsam could also play Vince Lombardi. He did play J Edgar Hoover, the legendary FBI director.
Did Martin Balsam wear ladies sweaters?
The dad from Wonder Years?
R.I.P: Vince Lombardi and Ernest Borgnine
Two Lifetime Legends in their own trade.
I remember watching this movie when I was 10 years old. I never thought I'd see it again.
This was my first connection to Lombardi…and this movie at 10 blew me away with…..permanent nostalgia I guess. What a find to see this with ads!
I used to love those cheesy 70's made for T.V. movies on football. The Brian Piccilo/Gayle Sayers pic was one of the best with Billy Dee Williams and James Caan. This is a great one, too esp. with the great Ernest Borgnine.
R.I.P.: Ernest Borgnine 😥
How appropriate that someone like Ernest Borgnine would play the part of an NFL Head Coach as legendary as he was as An Actor. Call him anything you want, but to me he will always be Quinton McHale.
In my humble opinion, the Packers were the greatest dynasty, because of one thing, and that was great love for one another.
Dad let me stay up late to watch this. We loved it.
Thanks so much for finding and posting! Much better quality than what I had posted years ago. Have always so loved this since first seeing live in '73, and felt it was so well done. Borgnine the best Lombardi I've ever seen. Thank again, Obsolete Video, for this!
Ernest Borgnine was the spitting image of him
Dan Lauria did a great version in the Broadway play Lombardi and in some NFL commercials for the 2010 playoffs and Super Bowl (which the Packers won). His Lombardi was used to film a hologram used in presentations at the NFL Hall of Fame.
Borgnine had it down
Great movie about a great football coach who was even a greater man
One of my all time favorite movies and actors
The man that could have and should have played Lombardi in a movie was Ernest Borgnine.
Yeah...the promo image is a dead ringer.
He did play him in an early 70's TV movie.
@@davidfielder950 I will look for that. Thanks.
Vince, the BEST!!!
I always felt Ernest could play Lombardi
At the time this movie came out I had wanted to see it but missed it. I don't know why I missed it. Back then, if you miss a show, chances would be slim to get anther chance to see it. And now, after almost 50 years later, I finally got to see it!
Great movie, however, I though that there would have been more to it. Like from when he accepted the position at Green Bay until his death in 1970. It would have been great to see that.
As a 10 year old, I was so let down by the ending….but a little research and some questions to Dad filled in the gaps sweetly
Wondering if there were any disgruntled "Love, American Style" viewers.
That would be me...
Of course I was only 10 years old.
And until you mentioned that, I had forgotten all about it.
Break up that fantastic ABC Friday Night line up by preempting one of it's essential components?!..
Only a movie about Lombardi would be worthy.
Moe Greene as Tony Canadeo!
Great quality!
Borgnine was a very convincing Lombardi.
This was broadcast over CBS on a Friday night in December, 1973.
Only problem was Vince Lombardi died in the 2nd week of The 1970 NFL Season It was not Winter in Wisconsin.
That ain't the only problem. Gale Sayers became a Chicago Bear in 1965. (Re the opening shot -- they wanted to steal from the opening of "Love Story." Winter....snow....that sort of vibe.)
He looks just like him.
Beautiful transfer. Many thanks for the upload.
That dupont commercial is as epic as the frozen tundra, well almost
Thank you for sharing this film ❤I’ve read 3 biographies on Vince Lombardi and I admire his legacy ❤
This TV film sparked my interest in football.
Packers didn't have the G logo on there helmets Lombardis first year , was third i think
really? Didn't know..
@1:13 "Lombardi died today ..."
Uh, Lombardi died on September 3rd. Now it gets cold in Green Bay but not THAT cold in early September.
I could've watched a part 2 had there been one
"You don't have to yell, Vince."
"I do have to yell, Vince..!"
😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇
This was quite a good movie and I think Ernest Borgnine was an excellent cast for Lombardi. But what I never understood was why it was only 60 minuses long? Made-for-TV movies were usually 90 minutes at least.
I remember watching McHales Navy and thinking that Ernest Borgnine looked just like Vince Lombardi. When this came out I fell over laughing. For once Hollywood got it right.
Lambeau Field was originally City Stadium. It wasn't renamed Lambeau Field until 1965. Lombardi traded for Lamar McHan when he took over the Packers; he wasn't impressed with Bart Starr at first.

8:06/ Just wanted to point out that if you freeze-fame at this timestamp, you'll see that Ernest Borgnine was BORN to play Vince Lombardi...😂❤
Vince Lombardi did not pass out fur coats to Packers Wives after Green Bay won the 1961 NFL Championship.
My father is one of the players in this movie. He has always had the nicest things to say about Ernest Borgnine. I even found two publicity photos of Ernest Borgnine from the movie with my father just next to him. I’ve looked for it for years to gift a copy of the movie to my father and I’ve never found it until now. Any way I can purchase a copy from you on dvd?
Awesome!!!
This all dates to December 14th 1973.
That has to be a Gil Mellé OST?
Or is it Jerry Fielding?
I think they collaborated.
The opening cityscape, along with that music, had me expecting to see Kolchak's Mustang.
I hope you have the 2nd half in your archive
This is the complete show.
Mo Green Bay! Think about it.
59:25 This version of the Glass Menagerie might be uploaded elsewhere on RUclips - not sure if it's on this channel or not
Do you have a tape of Sam Peckinpah on Tomorrow: Tom Snyder, aired September 4, 1974? From what I've heard, Sam was in great form. I hope you will publish it. Many thanks!
Attention Packer fans!!!
do u have a web site where u sell rare dvd ?
Since betamax didn't come out until 1975, what was the source of this video? Sony U Matic?
Eiaj Reel To Reel
If Mr. Lombardi had stayed with the Giants for another season, he would have been the Giant HC...
their loss. They dragged their feet too long.
Did KABC Air this before SB7?
Misinformation. Bart Starr was not Vince Lombardi's first choice for QB. I know because my husband played for Green Bay in 1959
NBC sportscaster Charlie Jones 13:55
Yes when he met up with a couple ex-felons in the country he made his presence known
Unsold pilot or not?
Who was the sponsors of this movie?
Dupont
Where the 6 million dollar man meets Lombardi
Ole turned down permission to allow Vince to leave for New York, so that part is in inaccurate. Good film other than that.
Artistic license.
Wow..Vince Lombardi could have been a great actor! I was glad he didn't domestic abuse Marie when she got uppidy about the Green Bay move.
Lombardis coaching style wouldn't work today , chewing out millionaire self absorbed players
I could see him in today's age coaching Notre Dame.
How true. You can't have coaches in the NFL today. All you have now is babysitters with the title of head coach.
Brilliant mini-movie except for poisonous DuPont adverts
Apparently Vince was a terrible husband and father. 😮 I saw a interview his son gave years ago.
His son and daughter loved and revered him though they had their struggles and ups and downs.
