      He was quite lucky to take advantage of his opponents injuries and easy draws, that's for sure. Madrid showed how lucky he was, here also, wth Sinner at 100% and not fatigued by the tonsillitis, there was no chance in 3rd set, see how net was 2nd set 1-6 for Sinner... Andrey is slowly taking revenge on those that beat him earlier this year (Nakashima in Barcelona, Sinner in AO, Arnaldi in RG). I did have this passing thought before the quarter finals of the second half draw, but between Hurkacz, Korda and Zverev who would have thought it really will be Popyrin making it through. What an even sweeter achievement it would be to avenge his Monte-Carlo loss as well as taking the title.

    • @tmatrix1
      @tmatrix1 2 месяца назад

      Sinner was injured. There is no way Rublev beats him when he is fully fit. Also, the windy conditions helped Rublev (especially vs Nakashima). On another court/tournament, both Arnaldi and Nakashima would beat him.

    • @domajorch
      @domajorch 2 месяца назад

      @@tmatrix1 Sinner himself admitted he was not injured (I'm a Sinner fan), just couldn't give 100%. Things like this happen, and they are part of the game, just as adjusting to windy conditions is. And yes, obviously these players could beat Rublev. They already have. That doesn't change the fact he faced (and defeated) many of those that defeated him earlier this year. It's just interesting (or so I found it).

    • @tmatrix1
      @tmatrix1 2 месяца назад

      @@domajorchSinner wasn't injured to the extent he had to retire or miss 1-2 months. It was more of a mid-match strain that affected him apart from having to play twice on the same day. Also, the windy conditions were horrible. The few matches I saw of Zverev, Nakashima, or Dimitrov.., it was comical how the ball was flying in all directions. Four unexpected players reached the SFs. In such conditions, you can't expect better players to always win. Currently tennis-wise, I don't think Rublev is better than Nakashima/Arnaldi, but on the day he won probably due to the poor conditions.

    I know Korda had a long week in Washington and there’s been a ton of stop and go ALL day long which has to be exhausting but the real Korda stood right up against Popyrin.
    Even though Korda isn’t exactly Roger Federer on serve, being up a break TWICE in the 1st set only to get broken both times and then eating a monstrous 7-0 bagel in the breaker (rarely seen).
    Now if that was most top 25 players, they maybe take a bathroom break to regroup or at least try to cool Popyrin down, who was returning like prime Djokovic, Korda IMMEDIATELY jumps off of his chair and promptly gets broken. After that when he wasn’t really making any inroads on Popyrin’s serve, he basically quit (while serving, down only one break) and handed Popyrin a love break and a spot in the final.
    IMO you have to make Popyrin serve it out. He’s never made a stage this large and nerves could’ve definitely kicked in. Again, most players in the top 25 hold there and make Popyrin serve it out.
    But Sebastian Korda isn’t like other top 25 players. If he was, he’d be closer to a top 12-15 player. He avoided doing it the last couple weeks (that Washington title was a gift. Cobolli is a very good up and coming player but he played till like 3 AM the night before and just had nothing left in that 3rd set against Korda) and showed an especially new side against Fritz and Zverev (who, to be fair, were both adjusting to their first hardcourt tournament since early April) and also dealing with apparently difficult balls to control (Korda had a full week playing with these balls on a North American hardcourt. That’s an advantage. I know Rublev played and lost early in DC but I think Popyrin skipped the Olympics as well).
    Korda is still young but his game leaves so much to be desired. Breaks down from both wings in neutral rallies way, WAY too often. Misses sitting 2nd serve returns WAY too often, should be getting more out of his serve at his size and needs to be better at pulling the trigger when he gets the chance (Taylor Fritz has become maybe top 3 in the world at doing this. That might sound like a stretch but I’m being completely serious. Fritz will rally with you on neutral balls and then, from either wing, as soon as you give him a ball he can attack he can do anything with it. He can go cross court from both wings and down the line from both wings). Korda isn’t nearly as good as Fritz but Fritz wasn’t this good a couple of years ago.
    Korda has a lot of positives but until he irons out the negatives the only way he’s getting to the semis of a Masters 1000 is a scenario like this: With a lot of players not playing due to the Olympics being last week and players who were just playing on clay days ago having to play on hardcourt with different balls while Korea has been playing on the surface with the same balls for a full week before most of the top 10.

      Not only was he getting everything back, he was floating incredibly deep returns that a guy like Korda isn’t going to do much with. He was out of his mind for a good 20-25 minute period. Actually, no.
      Rublev is more consistent than most GS semifinalists, but not necessarily more talented or overall better, in best of 5, his tennis' weaknesses are showing.
      He lacks handskill, flair and his second serves are extremely weak.
      To top this, he needs to keep 100% intensity in every point, because if he doesn't, he game fall off

    Several times in this match, Arnaldi chases down a ball and does a kind of Djokovich "split" to retrieve it. To me, this always seems like a desperate shot. Wouldn't it be just as quick to take the extra running step and retrieve that ball so you're not stuck in an awkward split?
