All due respect for a job well done. I'm reminded of something Andy Rooney said about gardening. "I was never so happy as to see one of my cute little cucumbers growing. The best I can figure they cost me about 329 dollars each !"
This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection ruclips.net/user/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seem to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.
A picture is worth a thousand words!!! very easy to follow no words needed really and what a lovely gentle and peaceful change!!! great video thank you for sharing...
You...have...skills!!!!!!!!!!!! Inspiring to those who WANT to do what you did. At some point, we have to move out of our comfort zone and venture out to try new things. If we make a mistake, we'll learn. Loved that you used the logs for compost; one of many useful ideas for those logs. The people who gave thumbs down must be TRULY JEALOUS!!! Blessings to you, and thanks for sharing!
That is the most beautiful, clean, neat looking enclosed raised bed I have seen. I made my husband watch so he could get some ideas (cuz I already have some!!!)
Why your husband? You are blessed with hand eye and brain like him. And you have free unlimited access to knowledge on RUclips. You can make it, be proud!
I have to show my husband this. I tried to tell him this is what we should do for our garden but I have one of those husbands that don't like to listen, is hard headed, and wants to learn the hard way instead of listening to his wife!!! If not the raised garden part at least the frame to keep the groundhogs and other animals out of the garden from eating up everything and destroying it! Thanks for the video definitely what I was looking for.
You're a great builder, and I appreciate that you're a great cinematographer and editor too. You really put in a lot of time and effort into both the builds and their videos.
Very nice job. Mine is very similar to yours but I did put PVC down at the bottom with a cap and a 90 with a threaded nipple so I can water from the bottom. I also live right by the beach. Got buckets of seaweed for minerals. I didn’t use chicken wire. I use one by two galvanized steel baby saver Poultry mesh. Made them into doors that are removable or swing out so you can work both sides of the bed. You’re really going to enjoy them. PS forgot to tell you I put a 3 gallon bucket drilled holes in it with a locking lid. I put my compost in there then added worms. This makes a huge difference. Thanks again for sharing God bless you
My husband built raised beds 12 ft X 4 ft, 5 of them 4 years ago with the corrugated metal. We put cardboard layers then lots of logs and sticks then added soil. We watered every 3 days for 2 weeks to settle the soil before planting. Maybe he didn't show that part because anybody would know about the soil settling. My beds still look brand new and are so easy to plant and harvest. Each bed cost $126 to build but they will last a long time.
I believe it is screened across the top. Take a closer look, I could be mistaken ; ) I agree about avoiding bird entry. We used galvanized poultry screen for our coops. Birds still got in to eat up leftover chicken feed.
@T҉w҉i҉z҉d҉e҉d҉ L҉i҉o҉n҉ Moisture obviously rots wood, so it will be a barrier between the wet dirt and the wood which will make the structure last longer. I didnt use it on my raised beds, but it seems like a good idea.
Great video. Love the thorough communication and connection. For those of you commenting negatively, there really is no need for this type of discouragement. You don’t care for something keep scrolling.....
I did a similar project to this 20 years ago. (smaller scale). Nice to see you have used the Hugelkultur method, as the logs decompose you can add more as the soil levels will sink substantially. The weed mat not necessary though. I also lined my treated timber with polythene then a fews years later removed and sealed with a water based non toxic pond bitumen. I don't think you will ever get a return on investment but the ability to pick your own greens is priceless. Thank you for sharing.
Actually it would not take too long to recoup if he intended to start a few hundred trays of seedlings over the winters, either to sell in spring or to eat in succession.
Very very nice, to think that most people have the space to grow some fresh vegetables for their own consumption and still they depend on the not so healthy supermarket food.
You are a talented craftsman and ingenious. I am sure your garden will yield a lot if produce because you have a tender heart of care and perfection. Thanks for all your great ideas. Good job!!!
There is a lot of thought that went into this. The use of weed cloth and the plastic liner will extend the life of this well into the future with the minimum of repair or replacement of wood. I would consider installing a light framework to act as a shed roof so you can hang bird netting, shade cloth, or plastic film roofing. Each one will increase your harvest by increasing your hot weather tollerance, stop bird damage or act as a season extender in the fall and cloch in the spring. The materal can be reused for many years.
Fantastic build, looks great well done, alot of hard work and money went into building that. Love the way you decided to try out the Hugelkultur method. Barry (ENG)
@@KateDInPA you are right find a real M.A.N with those skills + some late night skills and a job of coarse and you will be happy wife . The BS of women with those skills is just not practical , you already have a lot on your hands .

major props! so many great things about this. love your passion too, yes it comes through with no words. two things i would suggest ( i learned the hard way) use hardware cloth instead of chicken wire, 1/2" or 1/4" to keep out chipmunks and small critters. also, a top on it....funny how the critters love to climb. awesome job!
If you went to the extent of adding wood to decompose, I would have added some fish heads as well. Also would have added some soaker hose or drip irrigation. Add a timer for automatic watering. Oh, and add some vertical, perferated 4 in. pvc piping to add food scraps and worms for automatic composting.
jenniewilliamsmural unless you live in a fairy tale, you need to accept life as it is. Wood is food. Wood + water + soil = fast food. Without a liner of some kind, that wood is rotten and useless in 1 or 2 season. There is no getting around it.

I love everything about how you make your videos! Nice to see a different kind of project. Watched the video before reading the description, so I was pleasantly surprised to see you adding the logs for hugelkultur! Hope you have a great first harvest.
Well conceived design, great video explication: perfect level of granular detail, yet hardly too repetitious. (BTW, I am a professional cabinetmaker and designer, looking to learn to garden. This tutorial is clear evidence that you are quite a craftsman indeed! Thank you for sharing this!)
If you screened the top too (keeping birds and squirrels out)..in the winter months you could just staple some plastic on the outside and have a greenhouse.

Robert Abner using the corrugated metal instead of the wood should be sufficient rather than the wood covered in plastic, correct?
I just love how there was no diggint for the poles. its a beautiful video!
Perfect! I’d be tempted to put that poultry fencing across the top, to keep birds and squirrels out.
Thinking the same thing. Or just use some clear corrugated and have it able to vent. Make a killer year round green house.
I believe it is screened across the top. Take a closer look, I could be mistaken ; )

this is to keep out flightless birds and 3 legged squirrels
That's what I would do as well!!! He did an awesome job!

Wow. A big project and a lot of work, but it turned out fantastic! With a light diffusing roof it'll be perfect.
Awesome veg bed and all done by one person!
boy! you can't beat those torx head screws on heavy lumber, don't know how we got along without them all these years great build THANX

I love the fact that you used leftover tree logs, branches, twigs and grass and future mulch. Probably the most clever I’ve seen. Excellent work. 🤙🏽😎
Daniel Hobbs as all that wood breaks down it’s going to leach the nitrogen from the soil. It’s actually a great way to kill your garden.
