I really like the gravel floor on your raised garden beds. No weeds to pull or snakes that are hiding in the weeds. Great job and thanks for the video.
Thank you so much! We do get some weed seeds or flower seeds from our beds that germinate in the gravel and grow but we can usually get rid of the ones we don't want with pulling them by hand or using a stirrup hoe.

That's great to hear you have a calling to grow your own food! We have found that gardening has improved our lives in so many ways, most of which you don't even think about beforehand.
Great video! So clear and straightforward. I can’t wait for this snow to melt so I can build too!!! I thought I should mention this: when you drill into the 4x4 on the short side, make sure you offset the screws for the long side. Otherwise you’ll hit your other screw.
Thanks so much! You know, over the years and dozens of raised beds built this way, we've never bothered to "try" (or even pay attention to) offsetting the screws and they've never hit one another or been a problem. Have fun building, and stay cozy in the meantime!
I just done built 4 of my vegetables beds yesterday. I've been watching your videos 3 times and i finally decided to started my garden. I wish i can share my beds picture here for u. Thanks for the idea
I also wanted to complement you on the spacing of your screws. They look so perfect I thought that you had marked lines and locations for your screws. Then I looked back again and noticed it was pretty much eyeball. Quite accurate.
Wow! Hands down the best video I've seen for beginners on raised garden beds!! You really went above and beyond what I've seen others do! Thanks so much for sharing!!
We had 6x6 cedar raised beds that only lasted 11yrs, they are falling apart one by one. I have a bed for flowers that’s made with treated 4x4’s that are the same age, and haven’t shown any signs of rot. This is in SW Michigan. Thanks for the great video, the beds look superb!
OMG! Genius on the construction of these. I always build beds just like this...but configured just how they'll be placed in the yard. It was always tough on the old back/knees getting the bottom level screwed in. But your way has all the work right at waist/chest level. So my creaky old joints say "Thank you!!!".
Oh my gosh just love how you guys came up with the design in your garden and the seating area and the barrels ,everything looks so perfect can wait to see your plants in there great job 👏
Thank you so much Val, we may still be adding some larger pavers in the courtyard/seating area so it isn't fully done just yet. But yes, we are incredibly excited to start getting the rest of the irrigation finished and seedlings planted out.
Yes! I've been looking for a more basic tutorial on garden bed construction, from the width of boards to number of screws per board. This answered everything. I was thinking maybe two 2x6's, but definitely want to spend more for 3 per side. Thanks for the great video.
Glad you enjoyed the tutorial and good luck! If you don't have issues with gophers and have decent native soil below, you can build a raised bed with only two 2x6's per side if the veggies will have access to spread the roots into the earth below. If you do add the extra 2x6 to make it 3 per side, it does make it easier to work in the raised bed as it will raise the ground surface 5.5 inches. Hope that helps and have fun growing!
Wow, this space is beautiful! This is the EXACT set up I’ve been dreaming about for years! The spacing is great, love the seating area in the middle and I love the pea gravel pathing! Hope I can have a garden as lovely as your’s one day!
Thank you so much for the kind words, we are extremely grateful for our space. Don't be afraid to make over whatever space you have currently and enjoy it to the fullest in the meantime. We previously lived on a much smaller property and although we never thought it was our "forever home", it didn't stop us from completely redoing our outdoor space so we could enjoy the time we were there.
I'm sitting here going "How can I do this but for a market garden at about an acre." The amount of soil I'd be looking to purchase is horrendous, but that isn't deterring me from wanting to do it. :D But yeah, this is incredible. I've dreamed of doing this.
I am brand new to gardening and this has answered so much for me. I’m off to watch every single video you have to find out what other gems are here! Thanks so much.
Love your garden beds. I followed your process from an older video to build six 3x8 beds using 2x6 cedar. I capped them with 1x6 so I would have a place to put tools, etc. Turns out I put my rear end on them most of all. hahaha. Thank you!!
Awesome! Yes we've debated on adding a top frame to ours in the past but never end up bothering, lol. There are some on the few existing raised beds that were here at our new homestead when we moved in, and they apparently make the perfect butt lounge for our barn cats too! :) Thanks for watching!
We used your video to build from your design with one change. The ends are still 48 wide but I moved the 4x4 in the thickness of the 2 x 8 to avoid cuts and waste. The sides are flush but the length is 8ft 3/3/4 overall. Thanks for posting.
First of all, I admire how you presented this, you are very well spoken, clear to understand, precise, succinct all of the above. Secondly thank you for taking the time in making and sharing this video as more and more of us would like to make our own garden. Question: do you stain the woods? If so what do you use?
Thank you so much for the kind words and it's great to hear you will be starting your own garden! We don't "stain" the wood necessarily but we did use a coat of GardenSeal on the inside and outside of the beds, we have the product linked in the caption. Hope that helps and good luck!
Hi Deanna and Aaron! I've been seeing you since many years ago and this new beginning is so exciting! This is paradise and we are so happy for you. Congrats for the project! love
I'm so sorry for my family and friends because they don't understand english (I'm from Argentina). I'm your biggest fan and recomended your blog to all of them. You're the best. Hope spanish subtitles will be available soon.
@@fernandarovedo We're sorry there isn't Spanish subtitles available. Hopefully technology will catch up in that regard but thank your for letting your friend and family know about Homestead and Chill.
Thank you so much for this video. This is the first year I will be using raised beds and I wanted to build my own. I am so excited about getting my materials on Monday so that I can start building 2 6'x4' beds. All your information has been so helpful and detailed and I just love it. THANKS AGAIN, YOU ARE WONDERFUL!😊
Thank you so much! In regards to the fireplace, you are absolutely correct there, we do have one on our back porch but have settled for a round table in the garden space.
Well done!! I am hoping to buy a home in the next year with a decent backyard. Once that's finalized, I'll definitely come back to this video and make some beautiful raised beds. Thanks Deanna!
We are currently moving to a new home with a large area where I want to create a smaller version of what you've done. It looks fabulous and very robust. I love seeing things done properly and can't wait to apply your much appreciated and sensible techniques. The absolute best of all the videos I've watched on this topic thus far. Keep it coming!
That is so great to hear! Everything we do can be scaled down to size with ease. Our previous house was on less than .20 acres and we turned our front and back yards into growing areas with raised beds, fruit trees, etc. Good luck on transforming your space in your new house!
Thank you so much for sharing! My partner and I built a cedar planter box last weekend based on your videos and written instructions. I was going into it a complete beginner. We had the lumber store cut the wood to size and it was very quick to put together. We are very happy with the result! Our local hardware store didn't have a non-toxic sealant and suggested we just line the sides with plastic. We ended up using garbage bags which seems to be working fine because I haven't noticed too much water leaking through the sides. This was a very fun and rewarding project and we will probably be building more next year! We love your videos - they are very inspiring!
We are so glad to hear you had such success building your first raised bed, now you get to start gardening, congratulations! I would say though for when you build future raised beds, don't use any plastic to line the insides as it isn't necessary. Source the non toxic sealer online which we link in the caption or just don't use a sealer at all and the raised beds will still last for years. Thanks for watching and have fun gardening!
Been following for years on Instagram and your blog! Learned so much from you and so glad you guys are on RUclips! You guys are a wealth of information and my inspiration for gardening 👩🌾
I really enjoyed the video. I realized you were definitely my people when I seen the beautiful greenery you had growing just beyond the small patio. I will follow your construction advice.
What a gorgeous garden!!! I just found your channel today. The info shared about building your beds and installing irrigation is exactly what I needed to know to get me started in setting up my first veggie garden. I will certainly be a subscriber for life!!! ❤️
Hi Deanna! It’s been such a pleasure watching this new garden come together. I love it when you make RUclips videos! You’re a natural. Can’t wait to have a bit of land for myself.. I know I’ll be coming straight back to this video as soon as I do!
Well thank you so much! I'm working on getting more comfortable in front of the camera, AND making more videos for you all here!.Thanks for watching, and keep manifesting that future land!
Found your site last year from Kevin, of Epic Gardening, and have been anxiously awaiting the next video from the new homestead. Every morning I come in and refresh the screen but for so long, no new videos. This one really was an epic. Love the cleanliness and functionality of the garden area. You are so fortunate to have the resources and opportunity to make a paradise in your own backyard. Can't wait to see the growth results March - August.
Haha, we're glad you found us! We are much more active on our website but we are making a concerted effort to post and be more present here. It gets tough doing all we need to do with just the two of us😁
Hey there! I go over a couple different clear silicone options in our "How to Make Raised Beds Last Longer" article (and explained more about the different silicone classes), which is linked in the caption. Here is one silicone we used. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003YHEB7Y/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=deannataleric-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B003YHEB7Y&linkId=9298458e49ed414fb31a5d5dab0ffa39
Awesome informational video, I own a business doing yard cleanups and maintenance, however; I just had a landscaping project dropped right into my lap by a realtor that I have done a ton of home listing yard cleanups for. I guess she figured that I do a good job with the cleanups...here build this for the outside of my office. Task accepted I guess, I didn't want to go into it blind though. This video was a great research video. Thank You
So great to hear you found the video helpful and congratulations on your additional work, maybe your business will even expand to other avenues? Either way, good luck!
This looks VERY nice. Dimensions well thought out to minimize waste and labor. Using a 4x4 piece for the corners was an idea that never occurred to me. Good instructions too. Thank you from NJ.
I should be preparing to go to work and this video showed up on my timeline! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. This is a God send. Now I know what I did wrong before and I can prepare for the next growing season. After almost 3 years of gardening, I was about to give up. But thanks to you and your husband I have renewed energy and enthusiasm. Have a super day and I will be purchasing some of your sourdough starters real soon. Many many thanks and have a great day.
I'm in Oregon so Redwood has been easy to for our planter boxes. I built boxes out of Cypress when we lived in Florida and they held up great. So, our redwood boxes started to fail after 12 yrs. It's been an ongoing spring activity to repair boxes over the past 2 yrs. Any sapwood seems to fail. Rough cut Port Orford Cedar has lasted the same amount of time without decay. Great new digs!
Thanks for such an amazing inspiring video. After 10 years in our home, I am rebuilding my raised bed garden this fall. Your videos are very much helpful.
How beautiful!thanks for the great info. I am alone, so I cut many corners and my creations are NOT good. Thanks for your great info. I’m going to try and make square and beautiful beds from now on.! Yay
I am so happy I found your RUclips channel! I am trying to set up raised garden beds. I do have gophers and Deer that will destroy a garden. Thank you so much for this video, my first time to find your channel. Thank you so much , I think you have discovered a way for me to have a workable way to grow plants, thank you so much. !
We're happy to hear you found us! Gophers are definitely a pain but deer can be an even bigger problem when it comes to your garden. I would think you would need decent fencing around your garden space to hopefully keep them out, although I am not sure how persistent the deer are or not. Wishing you the best of luck and have fun growing!
Thanks for that idea about the mending brace. I will apply that. I built pretty high beds previously and your point about the amount of soil required to fill really hits home.
I didn't get into it in this video, but for deeper beds, folks can always consider a Hugelkultur style bed to reduce the cost of filling them - where you fill the bottom foot with logs, branches, leaves and other natural/organic material, and then add quality compost and soil in the upper foot.
Nice job, good vid. Tip: slightly stagger the 2 screws through each corner post timbers so you dont have 6 screws in a straight line through the centre of each corner post & this will reduce the likelihood of the corner post timbers splitting through the centre over time.
Very informative video. Would love to have a garden like yours! Just a thought…..if you would cut your end boards to exactly 4’ and put them on the outside of the 8’ boards, instead of the inside, you would have no waste at all. The bed would end up being 4’ wide and 8’ 3”s long, but that would just mean a couple extra inches of hardware cloth for each one, but no wood waste at all, instead of the the 3”s per board that you have now on the ends. Just throwing that out there for future beds if you wish to do so. Thank you!
We do it this way for a reason, if you watch the assembly portion of building the bed, you would see that wouldn't be possible as we construct the shorter sides of the beds first so we lay the long boards on top of those which makes it way more easy to assemble. We have learned from years of building raised beds that this is the easiest way to do so.
@@HomesteadandChill yeah, I watched the video. It would still work the same way as far as assembly goes. Your 4x4 would just be inset 1.5”s from the edge on your ends. They will still stand up and your long boards would lay directly on the 4x4s inside of the ends. I’ve built a lot of raised beds too, and one of my goals is always to have the least amount of work and waste possible. This way is the same amount of work, or ease of work, as yours, except with no waste. I just wanted to show you that there are ways to build them using your exact procedure, you still wouldn’t have to bend down for the long sides and just a very slight change in measurement and assembly, but without any leftover pieces of board. Anyway, enjoyed your video.
Looks good to me. I generally look at the comments to see who's saying something about how it could be done better. But I didn't see any. Apparently it's freaking perfect. Lol my niece wants some help with a raised bed but she wanted it 25 feet. I think I will talk her into three 8 foot beds.
It could likely be done "better" but this way is fairly simple and approachable while still ending up with a nice garden bed at the end. I would definitely recommend building 3 smaller beds as you suggest, not even just for the structural integrity of the bed themselves but getting in and around 3 smaller beds will be much more accessible than one really long one. Good luck!
Wow. Amazing setup. You gave me the idea to repurpose some old redwood from a deck I salvaged. One side had been painted...I wonder if I should plane off the paint, or if it will protect the insides of the boxes from deteriorating wiggly. I'll have to make smaller boxes but they will be free, except for the hardware cloth, as I to have gophers to contend with. I also have to add hoops and shade cloth to keep out squirrels, mice, rabbits, and deer.
I would personally be leery of the paint being on the inside of the beds, especially if it's old and potentially could contain lead. Have fun with your project!
Easy to make by yourself and fairly cheap. Total cost for one bed was just under $60. Thank you very much! We will make one more and start our first garden this weekend. Question: should we use a stain on the cedar or just put outside as is?
So great to hear, we don't typically stain the raised beds as they will hold up great without it. The wood does start to turn more grey in color as it ages but it shouldn't have an impact on the durability of the wood itself. We did use GardenSeal (which we linked in the caption) which is a food safe/ non-toxic sealant but it's not something that you have to do either. Our beds have since faded to grey from their original bright redwood color that is shown in the video. Hope that helps and good luck!
Awesome video. Thank you for sharing. I probably only have space on my small urban patio to build one raised bed but you’ve given me the knowledge and confidence to go do it!
definitely like the drip irrigation with so many yo just turn on a rap to water numerous beds. noticed you saved a ton of timber and money by not capping
Great video. My wife and I just finished building one. It was easy and a fun project to do together. Only complaint was the cost of lumber. Thanks for sharing!
You are amazing and charismatic!!! You have the most beautiful and flawless garden I have ever visited on RUclips. Your garden is absolutely stunning, neat, and very well-maintained and everything looks luscious. I love to garden a little bit but I’m a wimp when it comes to lizards rodents worms and all of the above so I just bought me a raise garden bed from Sam’s that I can stand over. Hopefully I won’t be too afraid. I don’t wanna see snakes or any of that nonsense lol but I love to garden in pots. You have class😎😎
You are far too kind Sandra, good luck on gardening and hopefully you get used to the different animals that may show up on occasion. You are essentially building a mini ecosystem that will be full of life so a few critters may join the party and be a part of that ecosystem as well. Thanks again and have fun growing!
I need these about 12 of them we have a food pantry here in town threw our church and we have started a town garden & I'm looking to do a Fundraiser to get it restarted since our preacher passed & everything has come to a holt to help with the Area Food Bank

Hi Deanna, thank you so much for following along and we are glad you enjoy the website. We appreciate your support and hope to hear from you in the future!
Loved the information and detail. Very easy to follow.. Would have liked to see the weather proofing product and application and caulking product and application.
Thanks for the kind words and feedback, we didn't do a video on the weather proofing but we have a detailed article on our website showing the process if you are interested in looking further: homesteadandchill.com/make-garden-beds-last-longer/
Great video, one of the best on raised garden beds and I really like the way you incorporated seating into the whole garden... I have a good amount of land part of which is thru a thinly wooded area and I think I'm going to use your idea to create a big veg garden with seating and entertainment there for the summer months here in NJ. Thank you so much. But you didn't cover the landscaping cloth part... but I know what to do with it.
I don't have a house, I don't have a garden, But I still watch cause I have a dream
That is where it all starts and good luck!
Me too gurl!

Thank you so much for the kind words Maria and we are glad you have been around since the beginning!
That is so great to hear! Good luck building your beds and have fun growing!
This was so well explained! This whole video makes the process feel so much more approachable. I can't wait to try it out. Thank you!
Thank you so much Crystal, it is actually quite easy once you have the steps down. Good luck on building your raised beds!
These are absolutely incredible. Very nicely done! The only thing missing is a fireplace in the middle area where you have the two chairs.
Sounds great Jessica, good luck on finding a home and making it yours!
This was EXTREMELY useful! Very well done ❤
Thanks for following along, and for the words of encouragement. We're happy to help you grow :)
Wow, that garden is amazing. I can't imagine the cost. You will definitely be able to grow a lot of food in that space. Happy gardening.
It gets tough doing all we need to do with just the two of us😁
7:37 cultivating that weed too!
haha i scrolled to see if anyone else noticed that nice kush type cultivar..
I followed your instructions and now have a gorgeous raised bed, thank you!!
That's so great to hear, have fun growing!
Is there a caulk y’all recommend for sealing the gaps inside the bed?
Hey there! I go over a couple different clear silicone options in our "How to Make Raised Beds Last Longer" article (and explained more about the different silicone classes), which is linked in the caption. Here is one silicone we used.

Been searching a while, but this finally showed up after giving up, and this came out of nowhere. Thank you for sharing!
We are glad you found the video so helpful, thanks for watching!
Good luck with you garden renovation!
After watching this video, I built 2! Thanks for the great video tutorial!
That's great to hear, have fun growing in them!
This is the BEST DYI video on building Raised Garden beds on RUclips! Thank you!😊🎉😊
Thank you so much and that's quite an endorsement, we appreciate it and are glad you found it helpful!
These are the nicest looking raised bed garden boxes I've seen so far!
This was so helpful! I love the notes at the bottom of the screen so I can easily screenshot the detailed instructions for later
How beautiful!thanks for the great info. I am alone, so I cut many corners and my creations are NOT good. Thanks for your great info. I’m going to try and make square and beautiful beds from now on.! Yay
Thank you so much and good luck on building your next raised beds!
This video is legit I did everything she did minus the base mesh and it looks awsome.
That's great to hear and have fun growing!
@@HomesteadandChill 100% having fun
We made a bed! You made it so easy! It’s beautiful and going strong!
That is so great to hear, have fun growing!
Trying this soon as the snow/ice melts. Can't wait
Amazing breakdown and step by step process for those not carpentry-inclined and just starting out a garden this year. Subscribed!
That's great to hear, good luck and have fun growing! It's a really great hobby that quickly turns into a lifestyle.
@@HomesteadandChill I decided to plane the painted side, so no worries about the paint.
@@privateuploads-geo2625 Glad to hear it worked out for you, I am sure the wood looks much nicer than the paint!
Go for it! You can always grow in containers if space is an issue or you want to be able to move things around easier.
definitely like the drip irrigation with so many yo just turn on a rap to water numerous beds. noticed you saved a ton of timber and money by not capping
Helpful tip, instead of snips on galvanized hardware cloth you can EASILY cut it fast with a cutting wheel on your hand grinder.
I just found your channel. This is the best informative video on garden beds I have seen.
Thank you so much!
Great video. My wife and I just finished building one. It was easy and a fun project to do together. Only complaint was the cost of lumber. Thanks for sharing!
Glad to hear you enjoyed building the raised bed, now have fun growing in it!
Deanna, its Bailey! Great video friend! I gotta say, no matter the topic or how many times you upload i will ALWAYS watch your content! ❤
Thank you Miss Bailey!
you are so authentic, it feels refreshing
Thank you for making this video. I am now feeling confident to tackle this project for my backward :)
Those are absolutely gorgeous, my wife and i will be building some here pretty soon .
Thank you and good luck, have fun growing!
This garden space is GORGEOUS!!! I love it. It was a lot of work but clearly a job well done. Can’t wait to see what you grow here.
Thank you so much! Planted the very first seeds out there yesterday. Wohoo!
Can’t wait to get outside to start my raised beds… great info… thanks from Pittsburgh, PA
Good luck on starting your garden and have fun growing!
You are a great talker and explained the process perfectly, thank-you so much
Love this...just made two of these this weekend by myself. Great tutorial. Thank you!
So great to hear, have fun growing!
Am I the only one that caught the “special” plants behind the patio area 😂😂 love it 👌🏿👌🏿
🕊️
I need these about 12 of them we have a food pantry here in town threw our church and we have started a town garden & I'm looking to do a Fundraiser to get it restarted since our preacher passed & everything has come to a holt to help with the Area Food Bank
This was the best video I have watched on this topic by far! Now I feel confident that I can build a raised garden bed! You have gained yourself a new follower😊 looking forward to watching more of your videos!!
Thank you so much for the kind words and good luck on building your garden bed(s)!
Beautiful!...an inspiration for mine that I will build next year, God willing
Thank you for this information- this is the best raised garden bed build I have seen

Excellent job! I just added the mending plates, thank you for the link! Its actually cheaper than at Home depot!
I'm like 30 seconds in. Liking because you said you re-filmed in landscape.
Thank you for sharing miss. My mom has tasked me with this and you are a big help
That's great to hear, good luck!
Great video! Thanks for showing your step-by-step method of building the beds.😃
Thank you so much! Happy to share.
Thank you for the step by step as well as the write up!
To save timber with reference to the ends adding 3” make them outer ends and not inner end pieces. Adds to the length 3” instead. Great video.
We didn't want it to have 3" added to either direction so it was personal preference there. Glad you enjoyed the video.
My better half and I just got a new home. Gonna use your tips. Just subscribed!
Congrats on your new home!
Thanks for sharing your video, I am making raised beds myself. You have a beautiful layout of your raised beds.
Thankyou for being so detailed
I feel so much more confident to build raised beds ❤😊
This was EXTREMELY useful! Very well done
Thank you so much and glad you found it so helpful!
Thank you so much, having a space to hang out in the garden is an absolute must as it does a lot more for us than just feed us.
What a great guide, thank you! can't wait to devour your blog! - from Canada.
Thank you so much and we hope you enjoy our content!
Thank you for this. It just popped up but exactly what I need to show someone I want to build them.
