This is the most helpful drip irrigation introduction video for beginners. Especially for those of us using your raised bed design. Thank you so much for putting all the links to the products in the description!
Very well done! You are building my dream version of raised beds. Mine are a bit less functional. Your RUclips is going to help me make watering way easier! This is the first time I've seen a local person on their channel. I've driven up and down your road a million times but the next time I'll wave as I drive by!
Thank you so much for the kind words and we are glad that hopefully this helps make watering your garden easier. We will keep an eye out for you next time you drive by and we'll be waving right back.
Finally somebody made an easy explanation of how to use tape drip and the equipment needed for it. Thanks a million. Definite will do in the fall. Now here in central Florida is super hot and humid.
Great video, really well done! I love that you provided the tool set, the materials, the spec for the materials separate from the actual execution. Clear and concise with post installation maintenance. I also appreciate the sources for materials and tools. I think I can take on this DYI project.
I’m so glad I found your videos. We are setting up irrigation in our newly installed raided beds and this has been the best how to video I’ve found. I’ve already started watching your other videos too and I’m a big fan. Thank you so much!
One of the best drip irrigations I have seen. Excellent discussion on pressure regulation. First one that mentions what to do at the end of the season. Well thought out video. Thanks.
This is literally the best timing. We raised funds last year for the community garden I help at and we've been talking about using the money for drip irrigation. I had no clue where to start. Thank you!
I really appreciate you taking the time to explain it like im 5! I’ve been trying to upgrade my system and I will definitely steal some ideas from this video.
Lol! Well, we teach a lot of newbies who aren't familiar with water systems or related terminology, so I like to break it down to the very basics. I am glad the information was helpful for you!
Awesome video! Clear, thorough, knowledgeable, and very easy to follow for both experienced and novice gardeners. Well done. I’ll be sharing this with everyone I know.
As always, you make it look so easy! The tutorial should take a lot of the guesswork out of my project and it answered all my questions. Thank you so much for sharing!
Thanks Deanna & Aaron! Always clear and detailed information from you guys. I’m redoing my drip and this came at the perfect time. Thanks so much!!! 🌱♥️
Wow! This all looks so classy, which I love! I just put in irrigation this year am already irritated that I can't change it or move things the way I want. I didn't know they made fittings you could unscrew! Now I gotta switch it all to those. :) Thank you!
Hi Jenn, congrats on getting your irrigation set up and sorry to hear you have to change some things around. We have found that having adapters and parts that can be changed out makes it much easier for future repairs and changes. Good luck!
Great tutorial. Thanks. I am just about to do one for my sister, so this has been very helpful. And by the way, 😳 can I just say Wow!! You garden is gorgeous!!
Great info. Thanks. I think I'll try the drip tape. The new boxes looked awesome. I did notice, in the latter part of the video, pressure treated wood used with the narrow and older boxes. Probably not a good idea, even if it was just used to tie the corrugated steel panels together. It wears off and mixes with the soils.
Thank you so much and hopefully drip tape irrigation works out well for you. In regards to the other raised beds with pressure treated wood and corrugated steel, the previous owners were the ones who built them or had them built, we just inherited them. We haven't had the time nor the energy to replace them just yet but may do so in the future.
Super helpful video as I am just starting a new raised garden bed that is too large to water by hand. Exactly the info I was looking for, even though this video is a year old its relevant to me now so thank you:)
I am so happy I found your channel before I attempted to run irrigation on my beds. I would have wasted so much time and money not knowing what I’m doing lol. I’ll be referencing this video when I do. Thank you in advance! Your garden is massive and so beautiful 😍
I really enjoyed the video , I want to install a drip system like yours , but my water supply Is rather far from my raised beds . I would need to use a raised platform with 50 gal water barrels on them to supply my water, my garden is about 20’ x 24’ , I am just concern about the height of the platform to make sure that all my plants get water . Would you have any idea on how high the platform need to be for this to work . Thanks for any ideas or improvements to my system to make it work . Thank you JimE.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!! I will be applying a lot of the same techniques for the raised beds I just built. But you sold me specifically on the elevated psi being sent to the beds before further pressure reduction, as well as a valve at each bed to throttle the water up or down for watering adjustments. I was planning on installing a blow-out at each bed to get the water out of the lines, ( with the assist of compressed air), but again agree with you that it might be better to disconnect and hang them up in a more controlled environment for the winter. Again, thanks!!!
One more thing. The Senninger Pressure regulator valve you showed in your tutorial was installed backwards. The white end is the outlet and the black end iconnects to the source. Thanks again for a great tutorial.
Great tutorial! I'm literally copying everything you are doing lol. I have not moved into the new house just yet but I'm designing my outdoor space now. I've modified some of my plans because of your designs. I can't thank you enough, now I don't have to reinvent the wheel!
Looks neat and competent. My hesitation is at the end of season if you want to refresh and turn the soil over it gets in the way and you have to disturb it and replace in back in place every year or season you turn the soil. I like how they work but will stick with hose and watering can for now as my beds are not large nor numberous. Your installation is really great looking.
We don't turn over our soil, we cut out our plants at the soil line and leave their roots in place to decompose and turn into organic matter. To amend our soil in between seasons, we sprinkle amendments over the top of the soil, lightly scratch it into the surface, add more compost on top for added mulch and we are good to go.
I'm so glad I found you on youtube! Many vids on creating raised garden beds, but you are the first that I found that discussed setting up drip irrigation.. Question: what if I bury the drip tube into the bed? Say 6" I'm in NJ, this will save me having to take it out for the winter and for root veggies it might be better?
I am not sure if burying the drip tape only 6" is enough for a NJ winter. I believe the best practice for any drip irrigation system in cold climates is to clear all the tubing and valves of water before freezing weather hits, removing the irrigation system from the garden and storing them indoors through the winter will also extend the life of your irrigation system. Our drip tape is usually under an inch or so of mulch but it was left uncovered to illustrate the system and set up for this video.
You are incredible! The last 2 videos are outstanding & so helpful! Gave me so many valuable things that I need to have in my raised bed garden. I do need to have a taller bed, but I can put rock or preferably something that will eventually turn into a compost to take up some volume of the bigger bed.
Glad you found the video helpful, if you have logs, branches, leaves, etc. on hand, you can do a semi hugelkultur method to take up extra space in a deep bed.
Someone at a local nursery told me that pressure reducers need water flow or they may be damaged. Wondering if you heard anything like that and if so, would it be better to put the shutoff valve before the pressure reducer? Thx, and great video!
Thank you for the video and the part and the companies that you have used. I have a question the pressure regulator is it that only 1 used at the sprinkler value? not at each bed? Thank you again for this video my wife and I are planing on 7 4'x8' raised beads and will enclose the garden with 1/4" metal fabric on the ground to keep the gofers out and screen on the sides and on top to help keep out the crickets other bugs and birds out. Thank you again!
We have a 40 psi regulator at the main valve where the water enters the garden via PVC pipes so we have good pressure reaching each bed. Drip tape however needs to be further reduced to 8-15 psi depending on what type of drip tape you are using so we have a 15 psi regulator in each bed as well. If you were to use a 15 psi regulator at your main water valve, you wouldn't get enough water pressure to your beds to successfully irrigate them. Hope that helps and good luck on your project.
Just discovered your video, Very good info. As a suggestion you can eliminate the PVC primer when using "Blue Glue." Most PVC glue is clear. The reason your glue is blue is because it contains its own primer. You can save time and money.
Just sub to your channel. Your garden areas are beautiful!! Thank you for the detailed explanations to building your raised beds and irrigation. I am getting ready to start my greenhouse and looking for this exact information on the irrigation and raised beds!! If you don't mind me asking where is it you live that it doesn't get freezing temps? I live in Central Oregon where we get down to single digits in the winter. Thanks again for the information!!
Hi there, so glad you found us and it's great to hear that you are finding our content helpful. We do get freezing conditions during the winter but usually not too bad. We live on the Central Coast of California, hardiness zone 9b.
@@HomesteadandChill Oh ok that makes sense. Better growing opportunities there!! Look forward to viewing more of your videos. Thank you again for such great content!!
Thanks for watching! We eat a lot of it being vegetarians for lunch and dinner, our plates are typically mostly sautéed veggies of some sort depending on the time of year . We also donate to local food banks and of course neighbors as well.
Thank you very much for your you tube Chanel very educational I was eagerly wanted to know how to contact every thing you demonstrated . I hope you will have more Videos what you grow and the results! Thank you.
New subscriber. Such a great video. Gave me the confidence to jump in to putting in a full irrigation system. Appreciate the links. Questions: No plumbers tape is needed for the threaded fittings. Just hand tightening seals it well enough?
Fantastic job of covering drip irrigation. However, you have missed a link in your supplies: the Perma-Loc shutoff valve that you use right after the 15 psi reducer.
Well well i started with your enormous story about the worms but have been bing watching you guys ever since! Great videos and very explanatory too! Question, is it not better to place the drip tape face down? So there is less evaporating ?
Thank you so much for the kind words and we hope you have found our videos helpful! It is recommended to place the drip tape with the emitters facing upwards but if you use the drip tape that we link in the caption, you can then cover it with mulch. We have the drip tape uncovered in the video for visual purposes but we try and keep them covered with mulch for the most part.
The beds are worked into the gravel so there isn't much gravel below each bed, either way, we have had raised beds on or around gravel for the last 10 plus years and have never had an issue.
That is metal edging that we used to outline our garden to delineate the space and create a border for our perennial plants that are planted along the fence line.
Greetings I built a raised bed garden and ordered exact supplies in this video. My bad is completed and ready for veggies. My question is what is your recommended watering schedule? Thanks for your time and consideration in advance.
The number or times and duration of the watering really depends on the climate that you live in. If you live in an area with dry summers but frequent temperatures in the 90's and 100's, you may have to water more often and longer than someone who lives in North Carolina who may still experience hot temperatures, but still receives occasional rain. We have our drip setup to water twice a week on Tuesday and Friday and we run the irrigation system for about an hour to an hour and 15 minutes. Our summer temperatures are typically in the high 60's to high 70's with overnight lows in the 50's. The best way to figure out your schedule is to water for a set amount of time and for the next few days, check your soil moisture and see how well it retains the moisture, you don't want it to dry out but you don't want it to be soggy either. A good inch or two of mulch on top (we us a barky compost) will also help your soil retain its moisture and protect your drip tape from the sun.
I noticed that at ur last home u made a video installing soaker hose irrigation to ur beds. So what made u switch over to drip irrigation in ur new beds? Pro’s & Con’s would be super helpful please. Thank u so much for ur amazingly beautiful videos!
Hey there! We still love those soaker hoses and use them in a few extra large (100 gallon) grow bags that we have set up. The main consideration was cost. The BPA free soaker hoses are a bit pricey (even mores o over the last couple of years) and the cost would have probably been 10x as much to outfit all 19 of our raised garden beds with them vs drip tape supplies. The drip tape is also easier to customize, though the the 50 ft soaker hoses did fit quite nicely in 4x8' beds like we have (it may be more difficult for other folks with varying bed sizes to get that perfect fit and coverage). You could automate soaker hoses in a similar manner that we did here , where each bed has a main feed line from PVC or poly tubing, then screws onto the soaker hoses at each bed. In our old garden, we didn't really automate the soaker hoses and simply plugged a garden hose into two of them at a time (utilizing a hose splitter). So, for fewer raised beds, they're still a nice option - and require less cutting/assembling/fiddling than drip tape! One "con" of the soaker hoses is that they do tend to spray/spritz a bit, so you have to keep them covered in mulch to prevent that. The drip tape does not, so you can choose to cover it or not.
@@violettraine1029 PVC is used in drinking water systems so that one is safe for sure. I haven't been able to find any information on the drip tape or poly tubing as far as that goes.
Awesome job. I really enjoyed watching several of your videos. Very informative and practical. Thank you for sharing the info. I’ve a small favor to ask you, could you please give me the link for purchasing the hard Redwood for the raise beds? I’m sure you must have listened in one of your videos, but I couldn’t find it. Thanks 🙏
Awesome video, thank you. I'm doing this exact project and this video has been my go-to guide. I'll be sure to use your links for Drip Depot so you get a commision. Quick question, what is the "black cone" looking part that sticks out sideways (inbetween your irrigation valve, and your 40psi pressure regulator?)
Thank you so much for the kind words and we hope it makes it easy for you to install your own drip irrigation! The "black cone" looking part is actually just part of the pressure reducer itself. Hope that helps and thanks for your support!
It has definitely has made it easy on me! you did all the legwork, haha. After doing some more research. It looks like that black cone part is a filter. The last time I put a valve manifold together I didn't think to add that. I'm rebuilding my whole system, so I think I'll do it this time around. Thanks again. I'm a new subscriber to your channel and loving the content! @@HomesteadandChill
That's great to hear, I think the filter just comes as part of the pressure reducer so it's a 2 in 1 type of thing then. Anyway, so glad you have found the video and our content so helpful, have fun growing!@@tylerbraga8088
Thanks for this video and the parts list. I think the link for the "4-in-1 faucet adapter" is the same as the timer, if you could please fix that. Thanks!
May I ask where you bought the vegetable beds,It’s look great 👍 and if you built it yourself, where did you get the metal that connects the three boards,Thank you!
We built the raised beds ourselves, check out our video on how to build them below. We also have the steel mending braces linked in the caption. ruclips.net/video/v0YkkovCWNI/видео.html
Thank you for posting this. I'm just starting my garden with my boys and we've watched this video several times now. Since you've been in your new place for over a year now, is there anything that you would change about your drip line irrigation? Also, how did you select your gravel and are you pleased with it?
We are very happy with our drip tape irrigation system and haven't thought about changing a thing about it. For the gravel, we like 3/8th inch gravel that can somewhat pack down and lock into itself. If you use round stones or rock like pea gravel, you will sink quite a bit as you walk around. We also see what gravel is available at our local bulk landscape supply companies, sometimes take samples home, to see what would work in the area and how it looks in the space. Hope that helps.
I’ve been looking all over RUclips for a video just like this and it’s super hard to find. This was the best video yet! Keep them coming!

Nice irrigation systen
Wow. What nice raised beds. Top notch. What do you do with all the Food?
Thanks for watching! We eat a lot of it being vegetarians for lunch and dinner, our plates are typically mostly sautéed veggies of some sort depending on the time of year . We also donate to local food banks and of course neighbors as well.
Great video…thanks! I love your new set up. Mine will not go as fast since we moved in right before winter & no longer have the 365 sun…
That is great to hear and no, we didn't use plumbers tape on any of the fittings and they do not leak. Good luck!
@@HomesteadandChillThanks for taking the time to respond. Much appreciated.
@@dmrouls1 Absolutely, good luck on your project!
Fantastic job of covering drip irrigation. However, you have missed a link in your supplies: the Perma-Loc shutoff valve that you use right after the 15 psi reducer.
Thanks for watching, the item is the second one listed, it is the adapter that connects PVC to drip tubing and has a shut off valve.
Gravel under soil? What an idea! I might go for concrete.
The beds are worked into the gravel so there isn't much gravel below each bed, either way, we have had raised beds on or around gravel for the last 10 plus years and have never had an issue.
GREAT VIDEO. Thank you
What do you use for back flow prevention? And doesn’t it need to be above the level of the emitters
I love your cat.🥰
This is a very helpful video, thank you. I have a question. What is the purpose of the metal barrier?
Great video! My question is what size is the pvc that runs on the ground? The main water .?
The PVC is 3/4 inch.
@@HomesteadandChill thank u so much for ur in depth reply😊 is the drip, Polytubing & PVC ur using now Bpa free, food & water drinking safe?
@@violettraine1029 PVC is used in drinking water systems so that one is safe for sure. I haven't been able to find any information on the drip tape or poly tubing as far as that goes.
@@HomesteadandChill thank u & please keep us updated if u find any new info❤️ God bless🙏🏼
Thanks 🙏
Hello Musashi, we purchase heart redwood at The Home Depot as that is where it is most accessible for us.
Thanks!
Thank you, fixed it!
May I ask where you bought the vegetable beds,It’s look great 👍 and if you built it yourself, where did you get the metal that connects the three boards,Thank you!
We built the raised beds ourselves, check out our video on how to build them below. We also have the steel mending braces linked in the caption.

very comprehensive --- thank you. Are there any concerns about the pipe glue or is that something that is used everywhere and is okay.
The PVC glue we use is made for drinking water systems so it is fine to use.
@@HomesteadandChill Ty for your response and i know i wll be coming back to this vid to see how i can do mine as well.
What type of system do you use if you have 7 feet deep flower beds with annual seeds and perennial plants on the ground that is slanted?
Excellent, informative vid.
Thanks much for your efforts in making it available.. d^)
