Valuable advice! I've been watching you for a few years and how you handle the big saws. I'm in my mid 50s and I've just now got some property with trees and enjoying the Zen of running a power saw. Unfortunately, I've sat behind a desk for 30 years. I'm in good shape but I'm not woodsman strong. I'm hoping more time cutting wood will be a good program to keep me in good shape as I age.
Buckin' sing the gospel! I incurred 3 herniated discs in my lower back. Keeping the saw close and managing the weight is a big help. Not only can I still use my 562 with a 29 inch bar. It doesn't hurt as much either. Keep up the great feed.
It's amazing I still get down and buck small logs with a small saw but having that option of not bending over is a God send. But the filing is got to be on point
This is the nitty gritty guys, pay attention. Stand up and buck!! Ive learned everything from falling, bucking and sharpening from Billy and my chainsaw life has been great ever since.
That 390 is nasty! What a good running saw this is why I love Husqvarna. I have an old 1989 Husqvarna 50 special ported with a big bore 46mm kit which only makes it about a 53cc saw but it's my firewood saw and she screams
Those 390s are AMAZING saws, I’ve been running a 390 XP W with an old school Oregon power match plus 36in .404 bar for the summer and it’s HEAVY compared to a 372 with a 32 but the power the 390s have is amazing. I was able to cut 12 cords of fire wood in about 8 hours. Just hanging it off my leg and belt I was able to walk down a log bucking fire wood rounds all day with no fatigue. I also was able to BURRY that 36in bar in a piece of 46-48in white pine and it’s amazing how powerful a 390 is, I always tell people it’s the torque of a 395 with the chain speed of a 372. It’s awesome to see someone else showing some love to an often overlooked saw
I recently leraned that having a big more CC while cutting down trees might also be a saftey topic. 50cc can nock donw almost any tree but it takes time, sometime you need have a faster cut to be more safe. I never thought about that before but it makes sense to me now. 50cc saws like 550xp mk2 is a wonderful saw for most things i do but if the wood gets bigger a little bit more might be good. My though on the eg. 592: needed if you are cutting big hardwood trees down all the day - in any other situation a 60-70cc should do the trick. Yesterday i learned something else too. The weight of a saw is not necessarly your enemy. You have to use the weight right and let the saw do the work, if you have to push down a saw a lot something is wrong anyway. Weight helps you also at kick-back - there the weight of the saw is also your friend. My 2 Cents - over.
To add to BBR's comments about letting the saw hang off and it's weight do a lot of the work. Here in the Midwest, our trees have a different limb structure than what he's cutting. So, what I do is have a smaller saw for the limbs. Kind of use the correct tool for the job. I run several bigger saws for the faster cutting aspect, but I do not use them for the smaller material. Yes, I do make a few smaller cuts with the big saws, but I tend to have a 35-40 CC saw, a hot rod 50 CC saw and a 70-90 CC saw with me when working so I can use the saw that is suitable for the process at hand.
To the man asking about how to carry the saw. I’m just gonna throw an idea out there for a bar option for a 50cc saw. When I have a bunch of small wood to buck I will use my ported 550xp mk 2 with a 28” cannon super mini .325 .050 bar , it is a 106 drivers for the chain. I know everyone is going to think that’s to big of a bar for a 50cc saw I’ve been running it for months and it does not over work the saw it stays cool. I have a video of it on here. The bars are expensive @250-275 ish. Now if you were trying to cut big wood with it then it would wear the power head out but Buckin small wood it’s completely fine. Cannon is the only company I know of that makes a small mount husky bar in 28” to me it was worth it being able to stand up and have it weigh as much as it does and it actually is balanced perfectly. I mean I have a ported 572 with 32” light bar but the fact that the 550w /28” bar can come close to the 572 with 32” bar while cutting small wood is worth it being probably 3 lbs less if not more.
The manufacture coating on burn your hands. Sand it. The paint on the head of ax prevents a deeper penetration into wood. Sand it. Do what Buckin tells you!
Jesus that 390 is a beast!! Thanks for the video buckin! Great job engaging the core! My Canadian brother in law got the call to go to cali for the fires. Crazy! God bless!
I noticed over a year ago how you handled a power saw way differently from us easterners. Walk the dog. Resting the saw on the bar for support. The throttle blip in the wood using the saw to assist you stepping up. 45° angle cut in to hold the saw in the log, (don't have to bend over to get it)! 😉 70+ cc saws, gotta do these things to keep oneself from causing undue wear to the carcass. Especially when 50 plus years of age, ya aint what you use to be.😢
Wow that 390 is insane what a ripper. I also use my leg a lot carrying my 96 cc ts700 cutting brick, I will always take the extra weight for speed the faster I can cut the less I am bent over. Great tips thanks Buckin!!!
Dude 100% if you dont rest those big chop saws on your legs they get tiring FAST, that with the inertia of the blades acting like a gyroscope can be really fatiguing
Excellent information as always Buckin!! The leg part is what so many let get passed them. Just that alone takes a good 50% away from the energy to set it on the log or lift over while working. After 6-8 hours that's a lot of saved energy.

Also, to the person wondering how to reduce fatigue packing their saw, get a lightweight bar. Stihl Lightweight, in my experience anyway, is the lightest, most comfortable out there. If you're running Husqvarna, you'll need an adapter, and will have to fabricate the bar a little bit, but trust me, it's worth the effort up front to gain the weight reduction.
They are great bars except they are so flimsy and flexible if your doing any brush out or small limbing they throw chains like crazy. They also used to blow tips out fairly quickly if you do a ton of bore cutting in hard wood the new ones seem to hold up better but if your doing a ton of bore cutting or dealing with brush the cannon and husky bars are a little stiffer and I personally and a few fallers I know prefer them. Buy as Gary says, light bars are a game changer
Hi Buckin, always nice watching your videos. I was wondering if you could explain a bit more about the gains with a modified muffler and what makes them different. I only have a Husqvarna 345 and find it lacks power and would change it for something bigger but I'm wondering if bigger more powerful saw means more kickback and if you could give safety tips. Thank you and keep on buckin.
In the real world, you can spot the fallers by the large shearling pad strapped through their right suspender, lashed atop their right shoulder. The saw is carried on that shoulder with the base of the bar on the pad and the power head extended out the back while the logger holds the tip of the bar in his right hand. The weight of the saw rests atop his shoulder not on either arm. The pad is worn like a badge of honor indicating "faller".

Billy, with saws like 365, 372, . . you have to be a bit of the careful side resting them on legs (it's a thing that's not the same on the five series now). The chain on 365, 372 runs fairly close to underside of the saw. And I had to train myself to use thigh muscle LESS to rest saw on, or move saw using legs. I've seen legging chaps get ripped a number of times this way. With the five series (if you compare them, the chain is further away, less exposed on underneath face of the saw tool). Another thing is saws with clutch drums that spin a bit too long after finger is off the throttle. My guess is, your saws are too well maintained to have that occur. But there's quite a few abused 372's and 365's, where chains run on momentum long after you've finished a cut with the saw. And it's surprisingly how quick it rips through cloth. Just a suggestion, it might be worth an episode or demo test.
Dang now I want a 390 , my local saw shop just got an order of 40 395s I might get one of them. They sold 8 the first couple days. Husky quit making the 395 a while back. I don’t know if I want a 395 or 592. I honestly don’t really have much use for a 90cc saw but I like porting saws and the 90cc and 60cc huskies are u the ones I still need to complete my collection of 5 series
Some of those trees have next to no live wood. A few videos ago it was hardly an inch of sap wood. . The stuff over 32" the domestic mills dont want. We can mill are selves on a MDS circle saw. Size of cross beams and end stands is the only limitation to log size. . Just thinking those logs could be used in a donation manner for someone that needs a shed or something that dosen't need to meet any codes as a out building ect.
Hey buckin. I was wondering and battling another fellow sawyer about ported saws. I just ported my old stock 572 and it’s a beast. One thing was it was almost dead, until I souped it up. He told me I just half lifed my saw after porting it. I told him it was dying and I extended its life by giving it a new heart. Who is right in our argument?
First of all, I am totally jealous of that Merc , second, I also have major back issues, lower, and what you say about a long bar makes sense, so how should I determine how long of a bar should I be running?
I enjoy your vids and talks. I chainsaw too. Do you have concerns of breathing in the fuel and oil smoke from sawing ? It gives me a croaky throat and can't be good for my body as it's toxic.
@@ItAintFar Be sure you're running 91 or 93 octane fuel. Don't run anything with ethanol. It's obviously not going to eliminate the exhaust, but it will burn cleaner and not be harmful to your saw the way fuel containing ethanol will be.
Let’s think about this guy. I’m sorry but you are wrong. Ethanol is made directly from corn. It’s put in gasoline because it’s literally cleaner burning. lol. Use your brain guy
He wakes up in the morning about the break of day before he jumps in his pickup and heads out on his way he goes to the bathroom sits on the throne and burpingbarkbeetles the beetle’s right out of him then rattles down that loggin road and finds the buckskin log he was after lol ✌️❤️🌲🪵🪓🐝

Like a knife through butter
😎😎
Good morning sir.
how long have you been a hand faller buckin
how many big trees did you get fall buckin
Are those handles Hickory ?
First of all, I am totally jealous of that Merc , second, I also have major back issues, lower, and what you say about a long bar makes sense, so how should I determine how long of a bar should I be running?
Depends on the saw
@
372 with a 52mm big bore and a warm port job and I’m a little bit vertically challenged 😆
I enjoy your vids and talks. I chainsaw too.
Do you have concerns of breathing in the fuel and oil smoke from sawing ?
It gives me a croaky throat and can't be good for my body as it's toxic.
Try some of the Aspen/motomix/xp fuel. Much better for your health just costs more.
@@ItAintFar Be sure you're running 91 or 93 octane fuel. Don't run anything with ethanol. It's obviously not going to eliminate the exhaust, but it will burn cleaner and not be harmful to your saw the way fuel containing ethanol will be.
Thanks guys
Husqvarna has E-tech saws with catted mufflers that would probably help maybe
Let’s think about this guy. I’m sorry but you are wrong. Ethanol is made directly from corn. It’s put in gasoline because it’s literally cleaner burning. lol. Use your brain guy
He wakes up in the morning about the break of day before he jumps in his pickup and heads out on his way he goes to the bathroom sits on the throne and burpingbarkbeetles the beetle’s right out of him then rattles down that loggin road and finds the buckskin log he was after lol

Lololol😊
Theres a particular 122cc China saw on Amazon I would love your opinion on Billy! Amazon keeps removing its humorous reviews.
Nice 😊 🤠👌👌💯💪🤙
Told you 7 years ago about the 562🙏
Can you tell us how tall you are, & maybe your arm length.. it can give us an idea on choosing a good bar length.
5’10 “ average fella
@@BuckinBillyRaySmith Given your previous employment, that would be an Average sizing in a menswear jacket I presume, not a Short or Tall fit 😉.
I'm 5'6 so my 28" is probably about long enough... With arm hanging straight down the bar is about 3" off the ground..
Billy, do U play that harmonica?
Like that 390
Are you using new saw pants? They look like normal jeans.. mad! What brand? Cloggers?
Arbortec
@ thankyou buddy❤️
@ hey, I want to share something awesome with you, hopefully that puts a smile on your face. I’m 456 days sober😎
Burping bark beetle in the woods too much n you will touch cloth some of these days n you be lookin around for a handful of ferns or old man’s beard something anything absorbent a sock 🧦 perhaps more luxurious lol
