      ACDC is Life: DVD resolution is 480p (720x480). I felt my copy should have been clearer. It had the appearance3 of being upscaled from 360p.
      The clip I played in the video was only occupying a small portion of my 1920x1080 screen, so it may have looked clear, but at full screen it didn't look very good at all.

    • @t5montecarlo
      @t5montecarlo  5 лет назад +1

      @orestesdd I am still on the fence. It may be genuine considering alignment with the number of poor reviews on Amazon. I bought it during a period when HBO stopped selling it due to issues with the manufacturer, but HBO didn't elaborate on the issues. The copy I bought came directly from China, so perhaps it was stolen from the factory? Fell of a truck? The packaging appeared to be genuine, just not necessarily for the North American market and there was no Region defined in the video files. The presentation may be genuine for a market that is not bound by Digital Rights Management, such as China and Philippines (see DVD region code in Wikipedia).

  • @sadlobster1

    So; in terms of the amount of discs, how will I know if it's the real deal?
    I once had seasons one and two on DVD and the boxes were half as thick as the 1-7 box set. But after you've opened it up, the seasons appear to be packaged in typical thin DVD boxes.
    I plan on buying the box set myself with my Christmas cash, eventually. So, I want to make sure I'm not buying any bootlegged stuff

    • @t5montecarlo
      @t5montecarlo  5 лет назад

      The DVD set that I have contains 34 discs (Season 1 has 4 discs and Seasons 2-7 have 5 discs). I don't know if the Blu-Ray set has a different number of discs.
      The packaging is excellent, but I have no idea for what region the packing was intended; it does not appear to be Region 1 packaging and there is no Region identifier on the packaging. The contents are likely counterfeit and low resolution/quality, that was likely upscaled to 720x480 so it appears blurry and sometimes splotchy. Perhaps the packaging was stolen from the factory?
      I am convinced that the only way to ensure a genuine product is to buy directly from the HBO website.

    I bought exactly the same box set you have (on Amazon from a seller I have bought from before) and I know for 100% it is a counterfeit. On first glance it looks genuine but then when I put it in DVD player and check on my computer if the DVD disc is CSS protected, how many layers the DVD has etc it shows that the DVD disc is all region, no protection whatsoever, VSO software was used to burn that DVD. The UDF has a title and exact disc number instead of a random generated title with numbers and such. There is also no information on Layer Path track direction. Also the DVDs don't have any usual logos before the menu shows up like: don't pirate stuff, ads, HBO logo, manufacturer logo etc. It just instantly moves to the menu. The quality of the episodes are okay but I know for sure they could've been higher quality if a DVD 8,5 GB was used instead of 4,7 GB. Also 4 seasons out of 7 have polish language. the last three don't have that option. That also put red flags for me. Will I return it? No, I'll ask for full refund and then destroy the counterfeit. How much did I pay: 16,67 Euros - seriously, very cheap.

Since this is one of HBO's gold mine i bet they have copyright protection on the dvds so if you can rip it to a computer pretty sure that would a big indicator that it isn't legit.

    Copying VOB files directly from a DVD is standard. Its a read function from the disc, so it will always work. On any modern PC you can literally copy any file from the disc onto the PC.
    The language playing on the next file is due to a key index value being misread/missing because he's running the VOB directly without the index being accessed. This will happen on multi-language DVDs with multiple VOB files. What happens if you actually play the disc using a media player and access on the disc menu rather than directly playing the VOB?
    The framerate variation is most likely due to the file source. e.g. episode file vs extras. The bitrate is a better indicator as would be an actual pixel count analysis (not done here).
    Set looks legit and you're seeing fault because you're wanting to see fault. Literally nothing you've shown here indicates a "fake".

    • @t5montecarlo
      @t5montecarlo  5 лет назад

      @Chris Brown: Thank you for the feedback.
      The frame rate difference was within the same episode, across a break in the VOB files, which I thought was odd. If there was a difference between episode and extra, I agree no conclusion can be drawn.
      I no longer have the DVD set, so I can't examine bitrate.
      The language issue I noted was explained in one of the other comments. If the disc was played in a proper DVD player, there was no language issue, so you are spot on about the index issue.
      When using MediaInfo to examine the metadata, all regions were defined (i.e., Region Free), but the packaging indicated Region 1. What are your thoughts on this region observation?

    • @MatrixAlphaCWX
      @MatrixAlphaCWX Год назад +1

      Yes you can copy it.
      But you can't play it, if its copyrighted it will pop up saying error on VLC.

      Picture and credits are clear.. From what I can tell it's an authentic Asian copy from the warnings that begin and end each dvd. Default language is Spanish but MULTIPLE other languages are available including english same as US version The Chinese sellers appear to have gotten nailed on selling the Asian version as there are NONE on ebay shipping from China and the cheapest listing currently on there was double what we paid from a US seller, so we bought ours at the right time for an excellent price. Read the dvd reviews on Amazon about this set. Most are bad and these are the supposedly "authentic" US versions ...and it JUST dropped to $100...U paid $39...I paid $42 out the door...why overanalyze it ESPECIALLY since the US version doesn't appear to be any better quality than what we have now...food for thought.

    • @t5montecarlo
      @t5montecarlo  6 лет назад

      You are right; I put that disc into my DVD player and was surprised that the language did not change. Now I understand there are several language tracks in each VOB file, so the language would remain consistent when played in a DVD player. In the example I showed, the first language track must not be English on that one VOB file, which explains why it played in French using VLC Media Player. I would expect consistency across each file in a legitimate set.
      When I played the episode in question, the quality didn't look that great; the resolution looked poorer than 720x480. How did the resolution look in your copy?
      I still think the set I received is fake. Perhaps yours is legitimate? Did you inspect the attributes of the files to see if they were like the ones in the set that I received? or were they different?
      I pointed out that 1 VOB file had a different frame rate than the other files on the same disc. I would expect consistency across each file in a legitimate set. Does your set have the same anomaly as mine? If not, perhaps yours is legitimate.
      Something I discovered after I prepared the video, is that the Region is defined as all regions in randomly selected VOB files in the set that I received, meaning it could be played in any DVD player in any region. My guess is that all the VOB files are defined as all regions in the set I received. I suspect a legitimate set would be restricted to a given region.
      I would be interested in knowing if the VOB files in your set are defined/configured/attributed the same as in the set I received, or if they are different.
      The eBay seller account was disabled shortly after I bought this box set.

      That is an interesting point; it was packaged quite well. I wonder how HBO would have packaged it?
      However, several indicators point to the set being a very good fake: no DRM copy protection, region defined for all regions...a DRM no-no (but advertised as Region 1) [discovered after making the video], no Region identifier on the box, video quality is a bit grainy, artifacts between the disc stamping and the outer clear plastic layer, and the eBay seller account vanished shortly after I bought this set. What I did not include in the video was the price. The price was only $39 USD.
      At the time I bought this set, the item was not available on the HBO website. I wrote to HBO in mid February 2018 asking why the set is not available for purchase, and they responded "...the vendor that produces it is having manufacturing delays.
