@Bubba24: Thank you. The boot is a very snug fit on the shaft; it is quite difficult to slide on the shaft. In my opinion, it doesn't need a clamp, but if you have a clamp, it wouldn't hurt.
@topgunpressurecleaning8930: I assume you are working with a 1978 model, as it was the only year for splines on the steering column; later years were a double D design. The spline is keyed so the steering shaft will only fit in one position. The bolt is offset from the center, just like where the lower end of the intermediate shaft fits to the steering box. Can you better explain what you mean by "get the bolt through"? I would like to help you, but I don't understand the question.
@@t5montecarlo I took the whole shaft off and oiled it. I ran a long rod through it and broke it loose. It extends now and got her bolted in now. Thanks for the reply.
Never mind I watched the video again and found the part at summit. I took the pin out as opposed to splitting the shafts as my press is not yet set up. Mine has another washer with a larger I,D, center ole that fits over the boot that the metal tangs of the cup go against (a retainer I would say) which makes more sense than those tangs squeezing the rubber. Great video I had already broken mine down, I searched for a video on this topic but came up with nothing. I found your video when i realized I received the wrong boot and was looking for the correct one.
@@westerngumby3671 Thank you; I am glad the video was helpful. It is interesting that you had an additional retaining washer on the outside of the boot. What year is the shaft from? I haven't seen one like that before and exploded views in the parts books don't show it. Perhaps someone else replaced the boot before and added the extra washer? Or is the extra washer the reinforcement that is inside the original boot and it came out of the boot? I wish you the best of success in putting your intermediate shaft back together.
Looks great, nice work! Question, does the boot your installed from Fairchild require a clamp at the end like you took if the original OEM clamp???

I'm having issues connecting the shaft to the steering column splines. Like it won't stretch to get the bolt through.

@@topgunpressurecleaning8930 Now I understand the part about stretching. Sorry for not understanding at first. It is good that you got it sorted.
