Why is Hard Wax so much better than Soft Wax?

  • One of the most frequently asked questions in the waxing world is what is the difference between soft wax vs hard wax? Well, where should we start!? First we only and HIGHLY recommend Mermaid Wax Next Generation Premium Hard Wax. I haven't use soft wax in years so I purchased soft wax from Starpil for this demo. Soft Wax adheres to the skin, not the hair. You can only go over an area one time with soft wax, otherwise the skin can tear and come off with it. Soft Wax is applied VERY thin. If you apply it too thick it will be a pain in the butt to get off. Soft Wax also requires a strip to be removed. Hard Wax adheres to the hair, not the skin. This means you can apply multiple strips over the same area and the skin is safe. Hard Wax dries on its own so it doesn't need anything to remove it.

The hard wax- I fell in love with years ago, once I learned it does not tear off your skin like the soft wax can. Hard wax attatches to the hair, not the skin. I had a horrible underarm hair removal experience with soft strip wax years ago. Took me a while to trust any kind of wax after that experience. After my armpits healed. I started epilating. Once my arm pits got use to an epilator for a certain number of years, I learned about hard wax and have been using hard wax to remove my underarm hair for years now, & I love it. After years of just doing my arm pits, im going to start being more brave enough to finally start doing my private area. 😫😫😫😫

Okay, that explains why I was having such a hard time with the Gigi wx - I was applying it too thickly.
Definitely investing in hard wax, though (it's similar to the Nair microwaveable wax; which I always loved using, as it was so easy to use and never failed at removing the unwanted hair).

Thank you for explaining the difference. I was unfortunately affected by the thin wax not used properly during a Brazilian and had skin damaged (right before my wedding) I was definitely in a lot of pain and took a few days to heal. Places I've gone used a combination of both. Was considering just doing it from home. Because I have sensitive skin I'll be sure to stick with hard wax! Thanks again! & Happy New Year!

I had an esthetician that only used hard wax. She said to me the same things you said when she talked about only using hard wax. It definitely hurt less because I used to get waxed at a nail salon and they used soft wax. I’d get my legs and eyebrows done with her. I later on went Brazilian and it didn’t hurt as much and the results were great! She left later on but there’s another esthetician willing to use only hard wax on my Brazilian area. I can do soft wax on my eyebrows but not my Brazilian area.

It helps if you use baby powder before any type of wax because it sticks to skin but not the hair. So the wax only sticks to hair and voila harmless removal. Do it especially for sensitive areas like brazillian, armpit etc

The first time I got a Brazilian the chick at the salon had never done it before and had no idea what she was doing... I'd never gotten one (it was early 00's and just starting to catch on to mainstream aka "normal" people, not rich celebs/models)and I'd only read about them but never seen or had it done .
It was HORRIBLE! She used soft wax, my hair is thick coarse and I'm naturally dark brown hair everywhere... it took HOURS. I was BLEEDING. I swelled up for days it was SO bad!
I started at a different spa where she knew what she was doing. It took 20 mins for a FULL Brazilian (when you get on all fours with no shame)
It was night/day. Its sooooooo important to be on someone's table with confidence (and maybe some hard wax?) Still not sure if it was the wax, the chick, or the combo but ive never felt so much lasting pain from a wax since. Even if I've gone YEARS shaving and then back to waxing...
I'll never be someone's Guinea pig again!

Thanks sooo much for this very informative series !!! I’ll be heading over to watch the other videos !! I literally have been going back and forth in my cart rather to purchase hard wax or soft wax as I too have very sensitive skin. And I’ve gotten soft wax for the longest time before hard wax was so popular on my eyebrows and lip with only redness afterwards which eventually went away. However more recently I’ve gone to get the hard wax covering all areas and I’ve not only gotten redness but skin irritation- bumps . Upon doing some searching I came across a few people with these issues mentioning that the rosin in the wax is what causes the skin irritations. So I’ve been searching for sensitive skin wax but all I’ve been able to find really wax soft wax like the Rica brand and others like Gigi. How do I order the Mermaid Series you mentioned in a comment and would it be available to me now during these current times we’re in for me to start at home? Whew what a lengthy comment lol Thanks ! 🌸

I use strip wax for the legs only. It is much faster and more cost effective than using hard wax for such a large area. Using hard wax and having to go over it again because it didn’t get all the hairs is expensive and time consuming. I rarely have that problem with strip wax and have never tore anyone’s skin, I’ve been an esti for 30 years..

Hey! I'm looking to get into hard wax. My only concern is how the hair grows back and how it will affect the pores of my legs and upper lip. When using hard wax for your legs and upper lip, does it make the pores bigger and hair thicker? If so, how can I prevent this? Is there any aftercare I need to do for hard wax? (Like aloe vera gel?)

So my best friend ordered hard wax and the whole kit to use between him and his sister... and I’m in school for cosmetology so we don’t really go in depth for waxing, just basics. When I tried waxing his back it kept leaving behind hairs and I had to keep going over it, and we used SO much wax for his back. I ended up having him order soft wax to do his back before his vacation. Why is that? I thought maybe hard wax is just a newer thing on Instagram but I never heard someone that’s a professional rave about it or just not use soft wax.

    Hi.
I’m curious. I know you are in the business of waxing but I am in a pretty rural setting and would like your opinion as to which home hard wax warmer you would recommend. I want one that is reliable and will let me pretty much precisely control the temperature of the wax. In case you are wondering, I have a problem with shaving. My sense of touch is decreased so if I cut myself I won’t know unless someone tells me I am bleeding and since my eyes don’t move up or down patching any nicks or cuts is a bit of a challenge so ... waxing.
    Thanks,
    Brent Braten

Soft wax comes in liquid form, hard wax comes in hard form (eg; beads)
    ----------
    1. you can only go over the area ONCE with soft wax or you run the risk of lifting skin.
    2. you have to apply very thin with soft wax or its a pain to get off.
    3. hard wax only sticks to the hairs not the skin
    4. hard wax is more expensive.

I’m trying to buy my own wax warmer but there are so many on amazon I’m left cross eyed from it. So many reviews and diff opinions I can’t decide which is best. Can you do a video on that if possible? Also thank you so much for a very clear understanding of hard vs soft wax you helped me decide on hard wax which is something else I’ve also been indecisive about while shopping on amazon. Also I have read that we need pre and post treatment before and after waxing Can you explain that and maybe recommend something for that as well? Thank you.

Sure! Starpil has some great wax warmers and pre and post wax care products! But yes, absolutely.

This is REALLY helpful....thank you so much! Can you just tell me is hard wax also called "Hot" wax or is that a different thing too? We have recently started using "Hive" and we thought it was a "Hot" wax....so no strips you just remove the wax in the same way you did with the hard wax. We had a client in recently though who said what we were doing in not "Hot" was so we are a little confused now. You sound very experienced so I am hoping you may be able to shed some light on this? Thanks in advance.

Why some of my hair rips off when hard waxing? Some of my hair are thinner and end up breaking up and I'm never left with smooth legs :(

She made a video describing possible reasons why the wax isn't removing all of the hair. Here it is: ruclips.net/video/fQfLjfdmFvA/видео.html
Also, remember that a lot of the time, you need to go over the area more than one time to get rid of all the unwanted hair. Hope that helped.
