  • I was chosen to be featured on TLC's My First Home a little ways back, and the episode is finally here! Filming was a blast, and took place in Glastonbury/West Hartford with first-time buyers at around $200,000. This was no small feat but we got there in the end!

This is what living with mom and dad for that long gets you.

My sage advice is that when you do NOT get the house you hope for there is a good reason & you should rejoice that the good Lord has something even better in mind for you. So, be patient & continue to look until He opens doors for you to have the home He knows is best for you.

If you look at this girl for face value, you can tell she pulls no weight in this relationship....This will be your typical American Marriage situation, he'll marry her, he'll make all the money and do all the work, including cooking and cleaning, then after a few years pop out a baby, she'll then divorce him, get alimony, child support, and the house and he'll be left homeless on the streets....She's just immature and irresponsible, not something I would stick my D in.

Lol. I was going to say the same thing. BigD Travels sounds bitter as hell! I can just imagine him typing that comment on his phone as he sits at a bar after work getting hammered and whining to the bartender about his ex.

I never understand why people look at homes before they get preapproved. That’s a good way to get your feelings hurt. You could end up falling in love with a home that’s way out of your price range.

RL Eddie - seems you didn't catch the part is the show where the sellers were selling their house "as-is" we put in our offer adjusting for that. Buyers got their offer accepted price wise. Their requests to fix the items came later during their inspection period. For the shows sake, we had to combine the two.

The first Cape Cod was charming; however, the buyers will soon realize that the kitchen does NOT have enough counter space.

Why did they shove all the furniture against the walls instead of making a conversation area with the seating organized so people can sit facing each other? Zero design chops here.

Possibly growing up means getting married.

It's not smart for an unmarried couple to buy a home together. Their refusal to get married shows that they've made no lasting commitment to each other. Because of this they won't be as likely to stay together. To be blunt: they're just playing house. If they break up it could be very contentious if one person wants to keep the house but doesn't have the ready cash to buy out the other's share. (Banks might decide that neither of them have the credit history or the income to assume 100% of the mortgage payments and refuse to give him or her a loan.) Or, one of them might want revenge on the other for breaking up and refuse to make payments on his or her share of the mortgage which will cause the home to be foreclosed upon by the bank. Both will lose all of their equity and have their credit ratings destroyed. Neither party will have the built-in legal protections that marriage grants.
I'm sure at this point in their dating relationship these scenarios sound highly unlikely because they're still starry-eyed in love with each other but that could change tomorrow. They won't be as likely to put in the effort to save their relationship like they would if they were married.
You don't have to spend much money if you get married by a Justice of the Peace or someone equivalent. It's not as fun as a big, fancy wedding but do it so you become full-fledged adults--not pretend ones.

I disagree... my wife and I bought a house prior to marriage. Our finances and economic positions were in much better condition while house and mortgage hunting. As a result we got the home we wanted.. which has incidentally increased in value almost double in a short 2-3 years after purchase. We got married a year and a half later. I don't believe they are refusing to get married, they are just putting their life together the way that is best for them. Also, they've been together for at least 4 years at this point (..they aren't just "dating") so the scenario you're spinning seems less likely to apply to them.

That is so true. Somehow to me to parade infidelity as completely normal is still disturbing. I don't care for it.

So true! So risky to go in on an investment together as big as that without being ready to be married.
I'm sure there are scenarios where it has worked out, but who knows if these two are even that in love (not my call, just saying). So all the reasons you listed could happen in a bad way. It's not a certainty, but it's crazy risky.

You cannot even find something for that price in the Detroit Metro area. A home like that would be $300,000.
