Thumbs up, feel the same way, scary to think that it is happening in real live before and still.
It's an absolutely perfect intro. In nine minutes, we've not only introduced the "villain," his goal and his commitment to it, we also establish the stakes. Not only is this a guy who does NOT fuck around, not only does he have a cause we understand and sympathize with (Shit, Hummel was three-dimensional in two minutes and Marvel spent a decade fleshing Thanos out) but he seizes a weapon so awful that even the "bad guys" are properly afraid of it. Most films now wouldn't even put this in as a deleted scene or flashback. They'd be like, "Hey yo, Nicolas Cage and 007, Ed Harris has a bunch of missiles, go blow up that shit."
Totally agree. This is an opening scene done right, pulls the viewer right in.
he was not a killer, thats why he was death in 2 hours. so lets not exaggerate things.
@@2684dennis he was talked out of it. he was more than willing to kill until someone convinced him otherwise.
Back when movies were good
Movies like Endgame does not deserve it’s fame compared to these older classics...
This movie is really the peak of Michael Bay. It's so good. Really solid plot, solid acting from Sean Connery and Nicholas Cage and amazing performance from Ed Harris. And don't get me started on one of the best movie soundtracks of all time!
This is his 2nd film after Bad Boys
When he had Jerry Bruckheimer to keep him in check the movies were better..
Watch 13 Hours... It's pretty good.
Truth, man! Spectacular, layered, human, bombastic yet not campy. This was such a great movie. One of the best.
Totally agree my friend
This is the movie that you will wish the bad guy win.
Because you will understand the general's anger toward the government.
He is chaotic good xD and isnt against goverment, he is angry that soldiers treat it like expendable resorces, but that is how american army works XD
He wasn't the bad guy, our govt is...
The math alone in this movie makes the government the bad guy, the gov. in this movie was willing to risk 100,000 + civilian casualties, expend and allocate more than 100 million dollars of gov. resources, suicide deploy a select specialists unit, and to top it off, set free a foreign spy caught red handed with top secret gov. files (of which they never found the files). They did all this, to avoid secretly paying the demanded 100 million dollars to Hummel and his men (And most of the money Hummel was asking for, was money they OWED to the men who died fighting for something that the gov. never acknowledged, covered up, and/or lied about). I doubt we will see another movie like this one, anytime soon.
@@paulholman2841 I think General Hummel was banking on that plan. But, America has a no negotiation policy with terrorist
The music is amazing
Hans Zimmer is incredible..
Hans Zimmer: "I don't like soft ass shit."
This is such an amazing example of great writing for a villain. General Hummel is a classic example of the sympathetic villain. Driven by honor and dedication to his men and what is right and just, his justification for his actions is hard to argue with. He is, ultimately, hardly a villain at all. This was a great movie. The music was incredible, the acting was superb, and the ties to 007 were the icing on the cake. But General Hummel's motives and story were truly inspired. As a writer, I love this movie more and more as I get older. Thanks for the upload.
General Hummel isn't the villain of the movie in any respect. Even Mason puts Hummel to Godspeed aptly "He's a SOLDIER, not a murderer". The movie's antagonists are FBI Director Womack, Captain Frye and Captain Darrow.
@Ankit Singh yes and no. On the surface, Hummel absolutely is the villain, especially from a screenwriting perspective (inviting incident, prime motivator, hostage-taker). But on a deeper level, you are right. In the end, motivations don’t change actions and a villain is decided as such. But yes, the “greater villain” is definitely the FBI and the two subordinate crazy captains.
@@TheGosslings exactly. From a "literary" PoV, Hummel is a "heroic villain" of the mould of Victor Garibaldi, maybe. However, not the entire FBI in this case happens to be the villain here, only it's boss who as per implied dialogues worked extensively under J. Edgar Hoover in his early years is the bad guy, as visible by his sole concern for getting the microfilm and possibly get rid of Mason rather than the lives of 8 million residents of San Francisco.
Ed Harris, Sean Connery directed by Micheal Bay to the tune of Hans Zimmer's music. They don't make this good stuff anymore these days.
Don’t forget Nicolas Cage.
"They're not coming for us, are they, Sir?"
Saddest thing to hear on the radio
And the soundtrack, tananaaaaaa
nothing more dangerous than a man of conviction.

Producers fuckin nailed that scene. Not every day you walk past a Marine General Officer.
I had the honor of passing former Marine General Jones, and his entourage down in the bus loading unloading area after the Army Navy football game had concluded in Philly. I believe it was 99’.
My buddy from back in high school went to the Point and played for the Black Knights. His family got me tickets. We were like brothers.
General Jones entourage was walking one way, between two busses with about 3-4 feet between the busses and I was walking the other way. We all had to turn our shoulders about 90 degrees to pass each other chest to chest. They were in their Alphas.
At first I was passing a couple O4’s and O5’s and then a Colonel or two. I was in civvies but I still said afternoon sir to each as I passed.
Then there was this tall big dude, 4 stars on his shoulders, we passed chest to chest, inches apart, he looked down at me as I looked up at him,
“Afternoon Sir!” I said loudly.
The Commandant of the Marine Corps nodded and continued on. I was like holy fuckin shit.
I think I was lance cooly at the time. Marine Arty.
Respect brother. US Army/PA Guard 2008-2017
Forgot how good this movie is. Years since I saw it. Great cast, great script, great music.
100% epic
100% action
100% drama
0% nudity
0% boring
This is by far Ed Harris best performance. The emotions he displayed in his scenes were top notch.
Well he went pretty far in The Abyss as well, look at the FIGHT....FIGHT! scene, thats insane.
Also watch behind the scenes from the Rock. He is going berserk!
@@domagojgreguric6957 I agree, his role in The Abyss was great. I'd say The Abyss, The Rock, and Apollo 13 are his top 3 best roles, in my opinion.
he was great in westworld too
@@walkerzven4972 his role in the way back was great
This is his best performance
As a former Marine, when I was in 3rd LAR I had a Sgt who got left behind in OIF 1. He hid in a trash dump till the next friendlies showed up. I can only imagine. He had this positive vibe all the time, but after half a dozen beers I saw something in his eyes. It shook me as a 19 year old PFC.
Outstanding scene, incredible film.
Incredible movie, god cinema used to be this good. Hard luck to those who missed it.
That salute was soooooo crisp!!!!

Absolutely love this film, the blend of action and humour is amazing!

In one line, you understand everything Hummel does throughout the whole movie. That line haunts him as much as the audience.
@@dars5229 true!
The Congressional Medal of Jesus....
Someone put some rigging tape over Mr. Sinclair's mouth, he's wasting Hummel´s time!
@Bilal Khalid haha lol 😂
I think the Congressional Medal of Aiee from Full Metal Jacket is more prestigious.
Another art by the Great Hans Zimmer.
I love how hes taking off his wedding rings because what hes about to do, like it or not, is disgraceful and a stain on his soul, too disgraceful for his wife Barbara to be a part of

Great performance from Ed Harris. You opened with a heart felt into.
Interesting enough to see the allstar producers in this 1 movie over 20 years ago.....don Simpson, Jerry bruckheimer, Michael bay, and on score....hans Zimmer ..crazy thing, I can tell now being a fan of them all
There's a scene in this movie in which Ed Harris argued to a member of Washington's cabinet member, that there's a team of Marine Recon infiltrated the north of DMZ or it is a place called Nha Be in which there's no American & ARVN forces would operate
And that's true
My grandfather told me about that
During Vietnam War
U mean the scene in which Hummel made his $100 million demand? He did mention in that scene that he and his Force Recon men were conducting black ops into southern China during the Vietnam war. But I don't think in reality the US had any forces of any sort operating in China. There were special ops units (Green Berets, Navy SEALs, LRRPs/Rangers, Force Recons, CIA's SOG, MACV-SOG etc) conducting black ops in North Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos (regions where regular US military forces were not authorized to operate in), but none operated in China at least to my knowledge.
No military guy who watches this movie will be against Hummel.
This is reality in almost all countries where the servicemen in battle field are always betrayed by their country man who are sitting in AC government office. Is the reality
Blame stupid politicians.
@@bluemarshall6180 Once Osho Rajneesh said , those who has to die sitting in the capital and who has to live are dying on border politician & leader are real basterd they are not stupid

Guys, there is unchangeable rule.
The war is started by old men, and young men pay for it, always.
There were times when Hollywood filmed scripts, music and first-class actors of the highest league. And now it sucks.

It's a thought-provoking film.
First a German Sharpshooter, now a General in the Marines.
Marines are such perfect warriors that they're no match against themselves.
The greatest opening scene of a movie ever made. In my opinion.
YES!
You know that General Hummel is the main antagonist in the movie and to tell you truth, I analyzed him really well and he really isn’t a bad guy after all. Since Hummel is still the main antagonist, the story is more focused on him and he’s like a main protagonist that we don’t see that much in the movie.
holy shit I just came here after watching the soldiers explain what happened at Benghazi. The part when they said that they had orders not to go in. It really hit the heart.
Love the beginning
One the best movie opening of all time.
best intro ever - and one of the best action movies ever made.
One of my favourite movies ever its just the combination of actors, style, MUSIC and 90s US propaganda that make it so awesome. This and movies like the gladiator are just unique.
he made that dress uniform look GOOD. its usually the other way around...
Nothing beats a film with a likeable villain with a legitimate cause.
As a kid i didn't understand Hummel's motivations, as a adult i do.
This is the only passable Michael Bay film ever.
Yes it's one of The Best Scenes its Shows are American military Who face enemies all around them I salute you😁
He was not villain.....he was the real Hero.....some day,. Any day this will be going to happen ...to eradicate the elements
Man this movie is brilliant and Hans Zimmer killed it
you dont see ed harriss' character look at himself in the mirror. its implied but you dont see it. great character development from the beginning.
This movie is awsome i saw this at the theatre when it first came out in 1996
Me too...
god , i love this movie`s soundtrack so much, really a masterpiece .
Sounds the same as the first bad boys movie
Hans Zimmer is the man to thank for composing a brilliant score. I know him and Nick Glennie-Smith are the two main composers while Harry Gregson-Williams helped with the music too but Hans Zimmer got the most credit.
The rock was the real deal back then with con air
Best Goddamn Intro in the history of movies

Congressman Weaver should resign immediately
Honestly if Micheal Bay could constrain himself a bit and make another movie this good I bet they could make an awesome Metal Gear Solid live action movie. Even this movie feels damned close at times with the music, action, characters, and feel.
