I have had to have 3X C-Sections to my three daughters. I labored 22 hours with my first and had a emergency c section with my first. She had a extremely low heart rate and was scared for her. She was a healthy 8lbs 4oz and 21.5 inches long. She is a striving beautiful 7 year old. My second daughter I tried so hard during my pregnancy to delivery that I wanted to try to have a VBAC. It was awful it turned into a emergency C-Section, both of our heart rates flatlined. We were rushed, she was born and they somehow saved both of us. I was terrified to get pregnant again for the third time, but in Gods time I became pregnant. I immediately made the decision to plan to have a c section. Best decision ever! I was finally able to breastfeed and be aware of the delivery. It’s amazing. We are done having children. We are still all great mamas and we did NOT fail! We birthed our healthy beautiful babies! Shawns spot on, every woman’s pregnancy is different. I have 3 children and each of my pregnancies varied. Contractions as well. I’m VERY pain tolerant and as soon as I hit 3 cm dialated I was in horrific pain. Intolerable pain. I begged and pleaded for the epidural ASAP for my 2nd and 3rd pregnancies.
I am 4' 11'' tall with very narrow hips. So, I had C-sections with both my pregnancies. Just like you I tried to go natural until my son's heartbeat dropped and it was obvious he was not going to "fit". It is very exhausting to have endured labor for almost 20 hours, THEN having major surgery. With my second son, my water broke at 34 weeks, and he was breach. So I had to have a C-section with him as well. I did feel a bit cheated and guilty for having to have C-sections. NOW, it is 30 years later and I have the greatest four grandchildren in the history of the world😱 The way my boys were born just became a non issue after a few years. AND, many years ago I would have died in childbirth. However you have a baby, it is a WIN/WIN situation!
I had a very similar first birth story, 90% if the time I was just smiling and nodding and choking up remembering this beautiful time. And I absolutely agree and tell my husband all the time him and I come first because without us being ok our kids won’t be!!!

It's all testing the algorithms and they are pure people and it probably has something to do with researching those that are attracted to this type of site and how we respond and react to the lack of comments, etc. Social engineering, algorithms and filter bubbles...the tech magazines discuss these things.
At some point the mentioned that they ran into (maybe at the Iphone launch??) some RUclips execs and asked. Even the execs didn't know. So far it seems to be a mystery as to why they don't have comments. I could be remembering wrong, but my impression has been they've been trying to get them turned back on.
Listening to you speak about your c- section brought me to tears. I recently just had my first baby as well on 11/27, and ended needing a c-section after 15 1/2 hours of labor. Being on that table and not hearing your baby cry is a feeling you can not even begin to explain to anyone. He had to be put in O2 for 3 days after birth but was/is a perfectly healthy baby boy. Any who! Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful birth story! And congratulations, she is beyond beautiful!
They say pregnancy is 9 months because by the time most women find out that they are pregnant a month has already passed. Love you both. So proud of the new podcast!
I felt the exact same with my first birth which ended in an emergency c-section. I tried for a Vbac second time round due to Mum guilt and not doing it “naturally” . This also ended c-section, I am now a week away from my 4th c-section (and last) and finally accepting that this was just my journey and this is what has kept me and my babies safe. People have to stop making Mum’s feel bad and guilty when in most cases it is out of our control. I hope you heal quickly and just enjoy your daughter and little family.
I pray for you two, I mean three. I pray that things continue to go well for you and God continue to bless you. There are many things you two have going for you. One, you are able to talk deeply with each other even about difficult things. Two, you have a husband who is truely interested in what is going on with you Shawn and what you think without implying it's stupid or being condescending like many men tend to do.

Currently 38 weeks pregnant waiting for a c section date for medical reasons I can't have a natural birth. Shawn, you did NOT fail, as a Mom, by needing a C-section. Drew Hazel was a healthy size, at over 8 pounds. You are small, in stature. Drew was too big for your birth canal. I'm glad you're healthy, and healing quickly. That's due to your athletic past, and overall health. I'm proud of you, and Andrew.
When I was born... 8lbs, 4oz. 21", the umbilical cord was three times around my neck. My APGAR was zero, too. It took nearly an hour to get me to breathe on my own. Now, I'm in the last year of my 6th decade. I'm between 6'4" and 6'5", 330lbs. The smallest of 5 kids, now the largest member of the family, both branches. Two total knee replacements, two surgeries to restore my sight, a heart attack, and a stroke. I'm a USAF Veteran with CPTSD and other mental and physical problems, I'm unemployed AND unemployable. So, I'm trying to 'enjoy' retirement. I spend a LOT of time at the VA Medical Center in our city, for appointments and just getting out of the apartment. (a little background, so you can know me better).

JanelleH I had a slightly similar story to Shawn’s...I was induced at 41 weeks, water broke on its own though. I had an epidural and just wasn’t progressing. He wasn’t dropping, and I wasn’t dilating more than like 2cm. Honestly mom’s height and baby’s weight aren’t exactly what matters. Mom’s pelvic size and baby’s head size are really the important factors. My son was also stuck in my pelvis. He wouldn’t have come out naturally. For baby head measurement, my son was 99th percentile. Modern medicine didn’t fail us, it saved us. Even a hundred years ago, we’d have died in childbirth or been maimed with a broken pelvis, and unlikely our babies would’ve made it either.
JanelleH Always most importantly is a healthy mom & baby. I'm 4'10" ,very petite. I was run over by a conversion van and sustained several pelvic fractures due to the accident. The midwives I had were unsure if I was able to have a vaginal delivery. Though Iwas told to watch my carbs; I still gained a significant amount of weight.💁 I did have a vaginal delivery a baby boy w/ a head circumference in the 99th percentile. I went to the hospital knowing a c-section was in the cards, and all I wanted was a healthy baby.
@@inchristalone25 that's not fair. You cannot tell from the outside what a woman's pelvis/birth canal is like. I have a friend who is 6 feet tall and had c-sections with all three of her kids cuz they couldn't fit through her birth canal. My sister, who is 5'4" have birth vaginally to a 10lb baby.
Hi. Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I had a c-section with my daughter as well and to hear how you felt makes me feel so much better about my experience. I had to get induced at 38 weeks because I had hypertension and was at risk for a seizure. I was in labor for a while. Got there Wednesday at 12pm and had my child Friday at 2 PM. I felt I failed my child only because I tried to do everything to give birth naturally. It broke my heart that I couldn't do enough. I couldn't get up from my bed because of the medication I was put on. I honestly felt like I wouldn't make it. They ended up giving me a c-section because my baby would not drop and I believe her heart rate was unsteady. But I'm so happy that I have my baby with me. She slowly growing. She's 3 months now and it had been the best thing ever. I'm so happy that you were so strong and that you shared your story and I was able to relate to you and I feel better that I wasn't the only one to feel like this. Having a csection is like being in a twilight zone! I did natural with my daughter and csection with my twins. The csection recovery and experience was soooooo much better than my natural! You are a rockstar either way! ❤️
I can sooo relate to so much of your story! 22 hours of labor, then to have a C-Section, disappointment about that but then happy to have baby here so quickly after that decision was made, enjoyed our time in the hospital, arguments with hubby along the way :) Life lived out in a real way. Yay Comments!!!! Hello beautiful people! Shawn, I have 4 adult children now. My first child was the easiest and short labor 6 hours and I only had to push once and the doctor actually caught the baby and the best experienced and the next 3 pregnancies were much harder, as she came out first with her face and she had the cord around her neck. With each of my sons, I had to have emergency C-Sections as they had the cords around their necks also which was very scary! You are very strong, Shawn and so brave! Andrew was so good to you during Drew’s birth. I love you guys! ❤️❤️❤️

I remember feeling all the guilt for having to have an Emergency Csection. I wanted so badly to give birth the way women have done for years and years but it just wasnt in the cards however now looking back 3 years later I have no idea why I felt so guilty my baby boy is a healthy strong happy toddler regardless of how I birthed him. I just had a second Csection in december 2018 and although I still think about giving birth naturally. I am blessed with a second happy healthy baby boy! Being that you had a C-section for your first baby, do you automatically have to receive a c-section for your second one? Do you plan to have any more babies in the future, or are you all done? ✨
@@sabrina.natalie you can try for a VBAC (vaginal birth after Cesarean) I choose not to because of my previous attempt at a vaginal birth and the issues that led me to a csection to begin with. However you can always try for one if your doctor and you discuss it and decide it's right. I am planning to have 1 more baby and I am actually trying for my 3 now! I will opt to have another csection again.
I have never listened to a birth story that I have resonated with so much. Your pre birth emotions and the mom guilt surrounding having a c section are exactly how I felt. A year later and I have finally found pride and strength in being a c section mom.
Such an amazing story. As a mom of 5 I had 3 c-sections and with all of them I was so nervous and anxious. Being a mom is so life changing and amazing but also so scary as your responsible for this tiny human. I love how real and open you guys are with all of us. My daughter just turned 1 this month and listening to this just brings all of those feelings back. It’s so crazy how your lives change in an instant once you have that baby. I was in shock after she was born. It wasn’t until we got home that it really sunk in for me and I just looked at her and cried because I love her so much. You really never realize the love that a parent has a for a child until you have a child yourself. Having baby number 2 in April, I can’t wait to go through this again knowing what to expect more than last time. Can’t wait for more podcast!
Thought you two did a great job explaining not only the facts, but more importantly the emotions that went with each moment. My daughters little girl, Hallie was a two vessel cord baby. I remember being so anxious throughout the pregnancy for all that that can imply. She was born huge 9lbs 8 oz naturally and when my son-in-law came out to me to tell me that she was born, her name, her weight and that my daughter was healthy, the praise I felt at that moment was all encompassing! We have such a similar birth story. Went past the due date, got induced, long labor that ended in a C-section due to baby's heart being affected. No one really knows how emotionally and physically draining it is besides us woman who have been through it. I hope you've had a speedy recovery and are enjoying time with your baby girl :)
The same thing happened to me with my first born. I was sobbing and shaking so much. My husband wanted to check the baby but didn't want to leave me. I think it's the relief of stress - it's so stressful worrying about whether your child will be okay - being the 1st you don't know what to expect so the fear is definitely there too. So your body literally goes into shock after it's all done so you can finally relax after hearing that cry.
I know you guys had a little girl (congrats btw!) but I would love to hear you guys talk about circumcision and what your thoughts are on that if you had had a baby boy.
Shawn, I feel like as a mother we all have that same mentality that if we don't birth naturally than we are a failure when it comes to the first baby. But that mentality fades quickly when you have your beautiful baby in your arms. When the next one comes you will have already been through this so you won't have those feeling of failure. You just smile and remember that the only thing that matters is a healthy baby.
Darlene Plumb exactly! #1 was vag and big baby and recovery was long. #2 section big baby and recovery was great. Wish section on #1. 23 years later still not recovered. Lol!
My first delivery was very similar, my most recent was C section #4 exactly 1 week after baby Drew. You do what you have to as a mom to get that baby earthside as healthy as possible. You do need a super supportive doc or midwife and support staff.
As a med school student from another country I cannot stress this enough: Americans have a way of thinking that it's not healthy about pregnancies and deliveries. María Conde-Pumpido Velasco My mother in law is a newly retired L&D nurse and she said it is all the new age birth planning and labor shaming that has lead to the guilt for not all natural births. She said it all changed about 10 years ago when all the shamming started. She said it has made it very difficult to treat patients because of the guilt others have put on epidurals and sections. I had big babies 1st was a vag birth with a 4th degree plus rip the rest of the way. 9lb 13oz 21.5 in. Recovery was long. #2 same size was a section due to coming out of the canal. Recovery was a breeze.
Yall are awesome! I can relate to your story - 28 hours of labor, no pain meds and then ended up with a C-section. I to wanted to be superwoman and wanted an all natural birth and felt like I failed when it didn't happen. Loved listening to your story and can't wait for more. Again, yall are awesome and will be great parents!

I love this! They actually say the opposite that if you’re very active during your pregnancy your delivery is easier! You made the right decisions and there is never a way to plan it! My labor with my son was very similar and he was stuck in my pelvis posterior. Never forget the long process and pain. You’re a warrior ❤️❤️ And she is such a beautiful baby girl!

This is everything. I feel you on all this. I was emergency induced & was in labor for 33 hours & ended up with a c section...only to have a second surgery on the incision a week later & come home with a wound vac. So...being able to let go of “the plan,” if needed is so important. Mom guilt is also so real. All this is such good info! & also... You’re a boss, mama...don’t ever think any different! ❤️❤️

I can't imagine what induction must be like. I delivered my babe at 40+6 (went into labor at 40+5), and I'm so grateful that I didn't have to be induced. And it's not because I'm against induction, because if he didn't come on his own I would 100% have induced. Shawn, you are SO phenomenal. You DID bring your baby into the world, and that is SO badass. You should be SO proud of yourself. Drew is gorgeous, happy, healthy... I'm so glad that you have her!
I really enjoyed being able to have this be extended for a more in depth view about everything. It's so heartbreaking to hear that you thought you were letting yourself or Drew down by giving in to an epidural. That was the first in one of the most important decisions as you've said. Thank you for sharing your story! Mine is very similar except instead of a c-section my son was taken out with forceps. Some scary moments! All was/is well and he's now a freshman in college. My advice to you is to enjoy every moment! 18 years seemed like such an eternity away when my boys were babies and once they started school things flew by at warp speed! Pregnancy is classed as full term at 39 weeks so 13 weeks in 3 months so 39 weeks equals 9 months. I asked my doc this because I called 4 weeks a month but really most months have more than 4 weeks. It makes sense if you multiply 13 x 4 it comes to 52 weeks or 1 year. Your story is fantastic. It reminds me of my first baby but I had a section a 32 weeks because my waters had gone and bubs had an infection. Love your vlogs xx

Shawn, I know exactly how you felt. I had no problems all through my pregnancy. Then 3 days after going over preeclampsia hits. BP was 180/110 . Feet swollen huge. Eyes almost swollen shut. I had to have a c-section. Never wanted surgery but it happens. However neither of us failed and we both had big healthy girls. Mine weighed 8lb. 13 oz. I love the podcast.

This made me cry. I have followed you guys since your miscarriage because I actually miscarried in October 2017 as well and just felt so compelled by your story. Then I got pregnant again in February 2019 and delivered my first baby via c section on 10/22/19. I have told my husband time and time again how you are my spirit best friend. We have been through several similar things and you have helped me through a lot. I can totally relate when you said you felt like you had failed as a mom needing an epidural and to have a c section. I felt the exact same way. My son wouldn't drop either and his heart rate was dropping so all I cared about was getting him out safely like you said. I'm so glad you were treated so well, because I was treated horribly during my emergency c section. They wouldn't let my husband in and then they wouldn't let me even meet my baby until he was 18 hours old. I cried almost the whole 18 hours begging to see him and they wouldn't let me, it was awful. They also only let me breastfeed twice a day otherwise they took him back and bottle fed him so nursing went out the window after a few days cuz he preferred the bottle. I cried so much cuz breastfeeding was something I wanted to do so badly. All of this really prevented me from really bonding with my baby and I had to try extra hard to bond with him. It took a lot of prayers for me to connect with him cuz the feeling just wasn't there with how I was treated. It's been 8 weeks now and I still cry over my birth it was horrible. But my son and I are really starting to share a special bond and I love him so much and just cant imagine life without him. Thank you so much for sharing your story it has helped me a lot over the last 2 years!! Much love to the East family!!

I’m 5’1”...I went through all this with my first baby, he was literally stuck couldn’t drop. I was given a spinal block my doctor tried to turn him with his hands & forcipes, nothing worked so I had to have a c-section. My baby boy weighed 9 lbs 1 1/2 oz. He was a BIG baby!!! That was almost 39 years ago.

Love your podcast! Such a great story. It's so true that every pregnancy is different. My first was a breeze, my son came shooting out like a cannon. I knew it was a boy all along. Easiest baby ever. Me second was the exact opposite. I knew again the gender before they told me - girl! She was breech, would not flip so I had to have a c-section which I did not want. She was a fussy baby and spit up all the time. My c-section incision kept opening up for weeks. To this day (they are 7 and 9) my son is easygoing and fun and my daughter is super intense and serious. Boss lady. She said, "I feel like I'm the main character of the family!" recently and it could NOT be more true. Enjoy it! Time flies!

Shawn and Andrew, I really enjoyed this format! It sounds like you are both going through the same adjustments most couples do when a baby comes home. Keep working through them. I had a very long labor as well and my process was very similar with my first but all of a sudden I got to 6cm and it went like lightening after that! But it so nice knowing someone understands the lack of motivation and feeling of failure that come with the long labor

I have had to have 3X C-Sections to my three daughters. I labored 22 hours with my first and had a emergency c section with my first. She had a extremely low heart rate and was scared for her. She was a healthy 8lbs 4oz and 21.5 inches long. She is a striving beautiful 7 year old. My second daughter I tried so hard during my pregnancy to delivery that I wanted to try to have a VBAC. It was awful it turned into a emergency C-Section, both of our heart rates flatlined. We were rushed, she was born and they somehow saved both of us. I was terrified to get pregnant again for the third time, but in Gods time I became pregnant. I immediately made the decision to plan to have a c section. Best decision ever! I was finally able to breastfeed and be aware of the delivery. It’s amazing. We are done having children. We are still all great mamas and we did NOT fail! We birthed our healthy beautiful babies! Congrats guys!

Shawns spot on, every woman’s pregnancy is different. I have 3 children and each of my pregnancies varied. Contractions as well. I’m VERY pain tolerant and as soon as I hit 3 cm dialated I was in horrific pain. Intolerable pain. I begged and pleaded for the epidural ASAP for my 2nd and 3rd pregnancies.

I am 4' 11'' tall with very narrow hips. So, I had C-sections with both my pregnancies. Just like you I tried to go natural until my son's heartbeat dropped and it was obvious he was not going to "fit". It is very exhausting to have endured labor for almost 20 hours, THEN having major surgery. With my second son, my water broke at 34 weeks, and he was breach. So I had to have a C-section with him as well. I did feel a bit cheated and guilty for having to have C-sections.
NOW, it is 30 years later and I have the greatest four grandchildren in the history of the world😱 The way my boys were born just became a non issue after a few years. AND, many years ago I would have died in childbirth. However you have a baby, it is a WIN/WIN situation!
Love this. There is no failure in having a c-section. As a mom of having 3 c-sections just know you are strong and have conquered a great thing.
I had a very similar first birth story, 90% if the time I was just smiling and nodding and choking up remembering this beautiful time. And I absolutely agree and tell my husband all the time him and I come first because without us being ok our kids won’t be!!!

It's all testing the algorithms and they are pure people and it probably has something to do with researching those that are attracted to this type of site and how we respond and react to the lack of comments, etc. Social engineering, algorithms and filter bubbles...the tech magazines discuss these things.
RUclips took the comments off of a bunch of family channels, supposedly to protect their kids but it seems like the parents should make that decision.
At some point the mentioned that they ran into (maybe at the Iphone launch??) some RUclips execs and asked. Even the execs didn't know. So far it seems to be a mystery as to why they don't have comments. I could be remembering wrong, but my impression has been they've been trying to get them turned back on.
Listening to you speak about your c- section brought me to tears. I recently just had my first baby as well on 11/27, and ended needing a c-section after 15 1/2 hours of labor. Being on that table and not hearing your baby cry is a feeling you can not even begin to explain to anyone. He had to be put in O2 for 3 days after birth but was/is a perfectly healthy baby boy.

I felt the exact same with my first birth which ended in an emergency c-section. I tried for a Vbac second time round due to Mum guilt and not doing it “naturally” . This also ended c-section, I am now a week away from my 4th c-section (and last) and finally accepting that this was just my journey and this is what has kept me and my babies safe. People have to stop making Mum’s feel bad and guilty when in most cases it is out of our control. I hope you heal quickly and just enjoy your daughter and little family.

Shawn, you did NOT fail, as a Mom, by needing a C-section. Drew Hazel was a healthy size, at over 8 pounds. You are small, in stature. Drew was too big for your birth canal. I'm glad you're healthy, and healing quickly. That's due to your athletic past, and overall health. I'm proud of you, and Andrew.
When I was born... 8lbs, 4oz. 21", the umbilical cord was three times around my neck. My APGAR was zero, too. It took nearly an hour to get me to breathe on my own. Now, I'm in the last year of my 6th decade. I'm between 6'4" and 6'5", 330lbs. The smallest of 5 kids, now the largest member of the family, both branches. Two total knee replacements, two surgeries to restore my sight, a heart attack, and a stroke. I'm a USAF Veteran with CPTSD and other mental and physical problems, I'm unemployed AND unemployable. So, I'm trying to 'enjoy' retirement. I spend a LOT of time at the VA Medical Center in our city, for appointments and just getting out of the apartment. (a little background, so you can know me better).

JanelleH I had a slightly similar story to Shawn’s...I was induced at 41 weeks, water broke on its own though. I had an epidural and just wasn’t progressing. He wasn’t dropping, and I wasn’t dilating more than like 2cm. Honestly mom’s height and baby’s weight aren’t exactly what matters. Mom’s pelvic size and baby’s head size are really the important factors. My son was also stuck in my pelvis. He wouldn’t have come out naturally. For baby head measurement, my son was 99th percentile. Modern medicine didn’t fail us, it saved us. Even a hundred years ago, we’d have died in childbirth or been maimed with a broken pelvis, and unlikely our babies would’ve made it either.

I was run over by a conversion van and sustained several pelvic fractures due to the accident. The midwives I had were unsure if I was able to have a vaginal delivery. Though Iwas told to watch my carbs; I still gained a significant amount of weight.💁
I did have a vaginal delivery a baby boy w/ a head circumference in the 99th percentile. I went to the hospital knowing a c-section was in the cards, and all I wanted was a healthy baby.
@@inchristalone25 that's not fair. You cannot tell from the outside what a woman's pelvis/birth canal is like. I have a friend who is 6 feet tall and had c-sections with all three of her kids cuz they couldn't fit through her birth canal. My sister, who is 5'4" have birth vaginally to a 10lb baby.
Hi. Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I had a c-section with my daughter as well and to hear how you felt makes me feel so much better about my experience. I had to get induced at 38 weeks because I had hypertension and was at risk for a seizure. I was in labor for a while. Got there Wednesday at 12pm and had my child Friday at 2 PM. I felt I failed my child only because I tried to do everything to give birth naturally. It broke my heart that I couldn't do enough. I couldn't get up from my bed because of the medication I was put on. I honestly felt like I wouldn't make it. They ended up giving me a c-section because my baby would not drop and I believe her heart rate was unsteady. But I'm so happy that I have my baby with me. She slowly growing. She's 3 months now and it had been the best thing ever. I'm so happy that you were so strong and that you shared your story and I was able to relate to you and I feel better that I wasn't the only one to feel like this. It's not okay, but we all go through things differently. Thank you.

Having a csection is like being in a twilight zone! I did natural with my daughter and csection with my twins. The csection recovery and experience was soooooo much better than my natural! You are a rockstar either way! ❤️

Yay Comments!!!! Hello beautiful people! Shawn, I have 4 adult children now. My first child was the easiest and short labor 6 hours and I only had to push once and the doctor actually caught the baby and the best experienced and the next 3 pregnancies were much harder, as she came out first with her face and she had the cord around her neck. With each of my sons, I had to have emergency C-Sections as they had the cords around their necks also which was very scary! You are very strong, Shawn and so brave! Andrew was so good to you during Drew’s birth.

It’s a love you’ve never known and more amazing ever felt before,
I remember feeling all the guilt for having to have an Emergency Csection. I wanted so badly to give birth the way women have done for years and years but it just wasnt in the cards however now looking back 3 years later I have no idea why I felt so guilty my baby boy is a healthy strong happy toddler regardless of how I birthed him. I just had a second Csection in december 2018 and although I still think about giving birth naturally. I am blessed with a second happy healthy baby boy! Congrats on your beautiful family you are both wonderful parents and you are a kick ass mom!

Being that you had a C-section for your first baby, do you automatically have to receive a c-section for your second one? Do you plan to have any more babies in the future, or are you all done? ✨
@@sabrina.natalie you can try for a VBAC (vaginal birth after Cesarean) I choose not to because of my previous attempt at a vaginal birth and the issues that led me to a csection to begin with. However you can always try for one if your doctor and you discuss it and decide it's right. I am planning to have 1 more baby and I am actually trying for my 3 now! I will opt to have another csection again.
I have never listened to a birth story that I have resonated with so much. Your pre birth emotions and the mom guilt surrounding having a c section are exactly how I felt. A year later and I have finally found pride and strength in being a c section mom.

I agree that everyone goes in with a plan and that sometimes doesn’t work out but you have to look at the positive. You have a beautiful baby girl and you and baby are both here and safe.
My daughter just turned 1 this month and listening to this just brings all of those feelings back. It’s so crazy how your lives change in an instant once you have that baby. I was in shock after she was born. It wasn’t until we got home that it really sunk in for me and I just looked at her and cried because I love her so much. You really never realize the love that a parent has a for a child until you have a child yourself. Having baby number 2 in April, I can’t wait to go through this again knowing what to expect more than last time. Can’t wait for more podcast!

Thought you two did a great job explaining not only the facts, but more importantly the emotions that went with each moment. My daughters little girl, Hallie was a two vessel cord baby. I remember being so anxious throughout the pregnancy for all that that can imply. She was born huge 9lbs 8 oz naturally and when my son-in-law came out to me to tell me that she was born, her name, her weight and that my daughter was healthy, the praise I felt at that moment was all encompassing! We have such a similar birth story. Went past the due date, got induced, long labor that ended in a C-section due to baby's heart being affected. The same thing happened to me with my first born. I was sobbing and shaking so much. My husband wanted to check the baby but didn't want to leave me. I think it's the relief of stress - it's so stressful worrying about whether your child will be okay - being the 1st you don't know what to expect so the fear is definitely there too. So your body literally goes into shock after it's all done so you can finally relax after hearing that cry.
I know you guys had a little girl (congrats btw!) but I would love to hear you guys talk about circumcision and what your thoughts are on that if you had had a baby boy.
Shawn, I feel like as a mother we all have that same mentality that if we don't birth naturally than we are a failure when it comes to the first baby. But that mentality fades quickly when you have your beautiful baby in your arms. When the next one comes you will have already been through this so you won't have those feeling of failure. You just smile and remember that the only thing that matters is a healthy baby.

Wow, newly born and Drew's already an overachiever
My first delivery was very similar, my most recent was C section #4 exactly 1 week after baby Drew. You do what you have to as a mom to get that baby earthside as healthy as possible. You do need a super supportive doc or midwife and support staff.
As a med school student from another country I cannot stress this enough: Americans have a way of thinking that it's not healthy about pregnancies and deliveries. The same way a man is no less for crying, a woman is no less for getting an epidural or a C-section or not giving birth at home.

María Conde-Pumpido Velasco My mother in law is a newly retired L&D nurse and she said it is all the new age birth planning and labor shaming that has lead to the guilt for not all natural births. She said it all changed about 10 years ago when all the shamming started. She said it has made it very difficult to treat patients because of the guilt others have put on epidurals and sections. I had big babies 1st was a vag birth with a 4th degree plus rip the rest of the way. 9lb 13oz 21.5 in. Recovery was long. #2 same size was a section due to coming out of the canal. Recovery was a breeze.
Yall are awesome! I can relate to your story - 28 hours of labor, no pain meds and then ended up with a C-section. I to wanted to be superwoman and wanted an all natural birth and felt like I failed when it didn't happen. Loved listening to your story and can't wait for more. Again, yall are awesome and will be great parents!

I love this! They actually say the opposite that if you’re very active during your pregnancy your delivery is easier! You made the right decisions and there is never a way to plan it! My labor with my son was very similar and he was stuck in my pelvis posterior. Never forget the long process and pain. You’re a warrior ❤️❤️ And she is such a beautiful baby girl!

This is everything. I feel you on all this. I was emergency induced & was in labor for 33 hours & ended up with a c section...only to have a second surgery on the incision a week later & come home with a wound vac. So...being able to let go of “the plan,” if needed is so important. Mom guilt is also so real. All this is such good info! & also... You’re a boss, mama...don’t ever think any different! ❤️❤️

I can't imagine what induction must be like. I delivered my babe at 40+6 (went into labor at 40+5), and I'm so grateful that I didn't have to be induced. And it's not because I'm against induction, because if he didn't come on his own I would 100% have induced. Shawn, you are SO phenomenal. You DID bring your baby into the world, and that is SO badass. You should be SO proud of yourself. Drew is gorgeous, happy, healthy... I'm so glad that you have her!

Thank you for sharing your story! Mine is very similar except instead of a c-section my son was taken out with forceps. Some scary moments! All was/is well and he's now a freshman in college. My advice to you is to enjoy every moment! 18 years seemed like such an eternity away when my boys were babies and once they started school things flew by at warp speed! Pregnancy is classed as full term at 39 weeks so 13 weeks in 3 months so 39 weeks equals 9 months. I asked my doc this because I called 4 weeks a month but really most months have more than 4 weeks. It makes sense if you multiply 13 x 4 it comes to 52 weeks or 1 year. Your story is fantastic. It reminds me of my first baby but I had a section a 32 weeks because my waters had gone and bubs had an infection. Love your vlogs xx

Shawn, I know exactly how you felt. I had no problems all through my pregnancy. Then 3 days after going over preeclampsia hits. BP was 180/110 . Feet swollen huge. Eyes almost swollen shut. I had to have a c-section. Never wanted surgery but it happens. However neither of us failed and we both had big healthy girls. Mine weighed 8lb. 13 oz. I love the podcast.

This made me cry. I have followed you guys since your miscarriage because I actually miscarried in October 2017 as well and just felt so compelled by your story.
Then I got pregnant again in February 2019 and delivered my first baby via c section on 10/22/19. I have told my husband time and time again how you are my spirit best friend. We have been through several similar things and you have helped me through a lot.
I can totally relate when you said you felt like you had failed as a mom needing an epidural and to have a c section. I felt the exact same way. My son wouldn't drop either and his heart rate was dropping so all I cared about was getting him out safely like you said.
I'm so glad you were treated so well, because I was treated horribly during my emergency c section. They wouldn't let my husband in and then they wouldn't let me even meet my baby until he was 18 hours old. I cried almost the whole 18 hours begging to see him and they wouldn't let me, it was awful. They also only let me breastfeed twice a day otherwise they took him back and bottle fed him so nursing went out the window after a few days cuz he preferred the bottle. I cried so much cuz breastfeeding was something I wanted to do so badly.
All of this really prevented me from really bonding with my baby and I had to try extra hard to bond with him. It took a lot of prayers for me to connect with him cuz the feeling just wasn't there with how I was treated.
It's been 8 weeks now and I still cry over my birth it was horrible. But my son and I are really starting to share a special bond and I love him so much and just cant imagine life without him.

I think you have absolutely no reason to feel like a failure!!! I have never cried so hard for someone that I don’t personally know(but feel like I do) when you started crying hearing your babygirl crying. I think you are an absolute rockstar!! I do want to hear what you guys have learned in 6 weeks. I will tell you I love the video version. I like being able to see how you react to each other. I feel like I can’t get the entire picture if I can’t see you. I absolutely love you two! I think you’re an amazing couple! Keep it up!!!!!

I’m 5’1”...I went through all this with my first baby, he was literally stuck couldn’t drop. I was given a spinal block my doctor tried to turn him with his hands & forcipes, nothing worked so I had to have a c-section. My baby boy weighed 9 lbs 1 1/2 oz. He was a BIG baby!!! That was almost 39 years ago.
I love this so much! I recently just had a baby girl as well and you put everything into words I couldn’t. Also how special is this that your daughter can look back on this and see what a miracle she is and just how loved she is.This is so relatable and raw. Please keep sharing your life and faith with the world it’s so refreshing!!!

Love your podcast! Such a great story. It's so true that every pregnancy is different. My first was a breeze, my son came shooting out like a cannon. I knew it was a boy all along. Easiest baby ever. Me second was the exact opposite. I knew again the gender before they told me - girl! She was breech, would not flip so I had to have a c-section which I did not want. She was a fussy baby and spit up all the time. My c-section incision kept opening up for weeks. To this day (they are 7 and 9) my son is easygoing and fun and my daughter is super intense and serious. Boss lady. She said, "I feel like I'm the main character of the family!" recently and it could NOT be more true. Enjoy it! Time flies!

Shawn and Andrew, I really enjoyed this format! It sounds like you are both going through the same adjustments most couples do when a baby comes home. Keep working through them. It's worth the effort. ;) Also, be forwarned, just as you seem to get a routine going things will change, whether it's because Drew enters a new stage, there's an illness, or a sibling comes along. Remember to be flexible and keep communicating with each other. That communication is vital to your marriage. Dates are really important too. Thank you for sharing these moments of your lives with us!

I had a very long labor as well and my process was very similar with my first but all of a sudden I got to 6cm and it went like lightening after that! But it so nice knowing someone understands the lack of motivation and feeling of failure that come with the long labor
