The following is my movie review for The Fall Guy, starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. He's a stuntman, and like everyone in the stunt community, he gets blown up, shot, crashed, thrown through windows, and dropped from the highest of heights, all for our entertainment. And now, fresh off an almost career-ending accident, this working-class hero has to track down a missing movie star, solve a conspiracy, and try to win back the love of his life while still doing his day job. What could possibly go right?

I really wanted to like The Fall Guy but I walked out before it was over. It was just surprisingly dull between the handful of set pieces. I realized after the big car chase that I didn’t care what happened next, so I left.

I have my criticisms of the movie, but for me it was one of the most rewatchable and entertaining this year. Firing on almost every cylinder, but some scenes and gags went on too long. Blunt and Gosling are wonderful and have terrific chemistry. Action reminded me of the stylized stuff in John Wick and Bullet Train.,,3/4 for me

Maybe I’m a simpleton, but I really enjoyed this movie and I have no nostalgia for the series (the movie isn’t trying to honor that at all it seems). I think the blend of Romantic comedy and action film worked really well. I just had a really good time with this. It’s my type of movie and I think it’ll stick with me.

There are films where one can see that the director is flushing credible plot points for other goals. As you say, this is a tribute to stunt work. I acknowledge that this aspect of moviemaking deserves Academy Award recognition; that being said, the emphasis on action shortchanges the storytelling. There are too many dumb bits of illogic---Ryder's trying to cover up a death where there were several witnesses??? Gosling is certainly appealing. But two bits of business don't make sense; during the boat chase in Sydney Harbor, he phones Blunt who's just been informed by villainous Gail that Colt committed a murder---with TV news dubiously verifying the conclusion he's the chief suspect. Rather than explain to Blunt how this is a set up & needs her help, he goes about their relationship, enabling the bad guys with their typically inept marksmanship to catch up to him, thus resulting in his Jason Bourne-like escape ending in an explosion Blunt sees on TV, making her think Gosling is dead. Then Gosling arrives on the set, startling Blunt in an alien outfit, whereby she almost justifiably kills him. It's played for dumb laughs. Yes, it's a popcorn action flick but dopey bits of business & the under-nourished romance undermines the spirit of the movie. There are certainly amusing bits sparkling here and there but there is much dumbness in between. The closing credits give a credible salute to stunt work. And there's the giddy homage to the original TV series. A close but no cigar vote from this corner.

I definitely had some issues with the writing, but I was able to suspend my disbelief and not focus on it too much, I enjoyed the action, I loved how it gave us the classic action but also showed it to us from a BTS perspective, and I loved Ryan & Emily as a duo as well as the supporting characters. And hey, I got to attend an early free screening with a great crowd, so I’m not complaining. But I couldn’t help but notice how much material that was in the promo didn’t make it into the movie, that’s strange. Oh, and I’d pay good money to see Metalstorm!
Also, I wasn’t feeling the runtime at all, it’s the exact same lenght as Bullet Train and that felt way longer (though I still enjoyed it a lot as well!).

My movie meetup and I really enjoyed this new version of The Fall Guy. I was the only one who remembered the 80’s TV show. The theme song during the end credits brought back memories. I was also the only one in my group that knew there really was a Mad Max inspired Metalstorm movie in 1983 the characters in the new Fall Guy must have been remaking but they never acknowledged because who would. 😂 The original did have great 3D.

I, too, enjoyed Bullet Train, and aside from John Wick simce idk if we're counting that one as a dual directing credit, Deadpool 2 is my favorite Leitch movie.
I actually enjoyed The Fall Guy quite a bit. I thought the reason why he goes on this adventure made sense in context, but the extent to which any of it may have felt like a stretch made sense once everything got explained later in the movie. The producer didn't send the stuntman because he could fight. She didn't want to draw attention and jeprodixe the production by involving the cops, so she sent the stuntman because he personally knows the actor he was sent to find and because nobody recognizes the stuntman, so he should have been able to do the job under the radar. There are also spoilery reasons that tied it all together which I won't explain here. I definitely think you missed or misinterpreted some key information somewhere along the way. I think Gosling and Blunt had a good vibe together, so even though they may not have spent much of the second half of the movie together, I completely bought the premise that these two have a connection and a history. The plot leans heavily on the performances of the actors, and I think they more than adequately delivered many charming moments in the time they did actually have together. I was there for the action and the stunts, though, and on that level, I think they did a great job. I did not leave disappointed. Loved the behind the scenes feel and the love for stunt people. Not every joke lands, to be fair, but they hit far more than the jokes in every other action comedy these last few years (I don't need to say who I'm primarily talking about because we all know). Gosling will never not be funny to me. I think it was a really fun time. Well worth checking out.
    POTENTIAL SPOILER QUESTION
Is it just me, or does anyone else think this movie's finale took a veiled jab at Alec Baldwin for shooting (and yes, I'll say it, for possibly murdering) the camerawoman on the western he was producing?

The Oscars by all means should recognize stunt work. But in this film, the over-the-top stunt action, the romance and the crime frame-up do not coalesce into a unified whole. Some plot elements simply do not make sense. One can forgive the encroachments upon reality but when the characters' actions don't add up, the goings-on becomes ho-hum. Speckles of wit and movie in-jokes surface here and there but they're pretty much steamrolled by the action. The closing credits give behind-the-scenes look at the stunts and there is an amusing homage to the TV show, so stay 'til the final reel.

Austin , you said it man ! I saw The Fall Guy last Friday, It was disappointing, comedy inconsistent as you rightly mentioned, I didn't care about the plot of the movie, and that scene, Emily Blunt singing karaoke and Gosling chasing some people in the meantime, my God, they couldn't come up with something better for her to do? Terrible, female characters as supporting roles , as usual. The Fall Guy is not for me . Great review Austin, you are the best, thank you very much for it.
