An impressive roster of high-caliber musicians also weigh in over the course of the feature, offering stories about Gene and their experiences working with him. Interviews include Scott Ian and Frank Bello of Anthrax, 3 Inches of Blood/Revocation's Ash Pearson, Jason Bittner of Shadows Fall, Chuck Billy, Alex Skolnick, and Eric Peterson of Testament, and more.
Featured Tracks:
Testament: "Rise Up," "Native Blood"

The DVD was edited by Leon Melas and directed by Rob Shallcross and Leon Melas, with co-direction from GENE HOGLAN. All audio was produced, engineered and mixed by Rob Shallcross with audio mastering from Greg Reely.
I went to high school with Gene and he has been the nicest guy on the planet even then. We would talk in p.e. and tell me about his adventures the night before. He didn't drink or get high either. He turned me on to Motorhead. Came to my house. Just a Class A human being. I have never heard him boast. Who would have guessed that he was the monster that Gene Hoglan is on the drums.
That is so great to hear. Seriously. Just judging him based on his interviews alone he seems like a class act. Very genuine and personable. Very smart.
He is such a great person. I met him at a show in my home town, when he was playing with Meldrum. He was hanging outside the venue, smoking, talking with people. I am respectful of people's privacy so I was careful at first talking to him, also I was pretty drunk so I didn't want to make him uncomfortable. But he was so nice and encouraged the conversation, so we ended up talking about Testament, Chuck, Devin and all kinds of stuff... It was really nice meeting him and it is a fond memory of mine.
Funny when I met him he was distant and unfriendly lol...also very stoned
@@TheLordGoat sounds like me when I get stoned.
Gene is kinda an alien! 😂 like how but he is just amazing, I don’t play drums but I love drummers and he is just outside if the realm. One of the best metal drummers of all time.
Badass drummer that can play for hours, yet all his rockstar ego wants between sets is an energy bar and he has the fucking manners to ask if it is OK before he has it first!!!!
Gene is my heavy metal idol!!
Best drummer that ever lived! His work on Death albums is incredible! He is genius! Hands down!
Agreed. Death, Testament, Fear Factory, etc. etc.
Balrog Cant argue with that!
Na, Nicholas Barker is king
ffp08 creatively? Absolutely not. Nick has never done anything quite as “jazzy” as gene has done on ITP and symbolic. We all know that nick can play blisteringly fast and even really technical, but he’s not as musically creative as gene is. Sure he can play everything that gene plays (as proof in the “symbolic” tribute band) but he could never come up with it himself. I mean there’s no contest on that one. Gene is objectively more musically oriented than nick is and if you disagree, I implore you to show me what nick does that is better than gene.
Nick is good, but he can't touch Gene Hoglan.
aha so that's the secret to his stamina - the energy bars.
I knew it!!!
Isn''t his long and sharpened small fingernail a hint to white powder? I don't even know whether he still has it.
Still: Just hearing what he did for the Death records makes me happy ^^
Gene's the Niel Peart of metal drummers!!!
As is nick Barker
@@nmac3718nick barker can’t do half the shit gene can do. sorry bro
My favorite drummer ever.
So true about what these guys say about Gene. I remember he came through with SYL, DTB & Zimmer's Hole & he played the second two sets every night. He's super chill too & always ended up at the after party. Metal God.
Nicolas Vincent
Gene is the class of metal drummers. His work with SYL is what won me over first (have to admit I did not know much about him before that). No big ego and able to laugh at himself!
Gene is like the titan Atlas, holding the world of metal up. Much respect
Heard someone call him the Buddha of metal "sitting there in his enlightened fatness" 🤣 (Made my day - and his even in great shape now)
How can I double like this video? LOVE YOU GENE!
John dette did the same... He was tour drummer for anthrax and slayer at the same Time. Both are badasses
Nick menza did the same for megadeath where he was the Chuck Behler technician. Chuck Behler did the technician for Gar Samuelson etc..
They don`t call him Gene the machine for nothing!
Gene Hoglan is awesome. I met him at a show in 1987 in Boston when I saw Dark Angel and Podsessed. That was a great show and that day I met him as well as Jeff Becerra and Mike Torao from Possessed. I remember reading an interview with him in 1986 and he said that the guys in Dark Angel took caffeine pills and drank vast quantities of coffee.
I rememeber watching SYL in 97 I think in London and Gene come on stage on crutches and not only did a City era show, but they also played Ocean Machine, nearly in full I believe too. Dude is a legend and an utter machine! Love it
Gene is a really kind person. I've ha the privilege to hang out with him a couple times here in OC hes really is a sweet kind soul.
Amazing talent and just an overall good person. We need more people like Gene in the world.
Gene if you read this , you dont know me but i love you man, keep up the great work.
Gene is a badass!!! One of my favorite drummers! Seen him play live several times. He just kills it!!
Gene Hoglan plays with his brain and brawn, his focus on technique keeps his energy going. Fantastic player.
wow...amazing!
Skills to pay the bills the man is a beast up there with the top drummers ever in my book
Everyone says nothing but good things about gene he's litterally perfect \m/
Gene. So legendary, and so respected. and for entirely good reason.
Gene is a fucking legend. Just bought the DVD : D
Scott Ian is everywhere
had the privilege of meeting him from dark angel, strapping , death, testament, dethklok, etc he is down to earth hands down one of the greats
I saw them on this tour, and I promise you he never missed a beat. If he didn't fucking hibernate for 4 months after that tour, it's proof the guy is beyond human. I'm a card-carrying thrasher for life and I've never seen someone pull double duty at that level, before or since.
Gene was able to play 2 sets back to back at that level because he is THE MASTER of using his energy economically when playing. His technique is so relaxed, so loose, he doesn't waste energy on unnecessary body movement etc. He could probably play like that for 8hrs straight. Monster.
Saw back to back Strapping Young Lad and Opeth sets with Gene a few years ago in Denver when Opeth’s normal drummer was having some issues. He absolutely crushed both sets. Also saw him play with Dethklok on their first ever University-only tour. Made Pickles sound very impressive.
He drummed for Opeth?!?!? Maaaaaaan. I would've KILLED to see that.
the Atomic clock of metal!!!!!killer drummer !!!mad respect Gene🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
So awesome how Gene approaches his performance as a metal music like an athlete - its not just about professionalism, its about the love of the music and being at your peak to do it justice. 🤙
Big fan!
Gene is a PHENOMENAL drummer. He's like a machine when it comes to time.
i met Gene in San Diego in early 90 touring with Dark Angel. He is the fucking nicest Guy. i still remember him walking out on stage both middle fingers up. Rest of the band holding guitars against Amps, Evil fucking feedback. he has always killed it, and is still killing it to this day.
LEGEND
I've seen interviews with Gene , aside from being one of the sickest drummers ever .. dude seems like he would be cool as fuck to hang out with ! Seems like a super laid back , humble guy
Hahaha, Gene don't give a fuck. Gene just plays. The man is a beast.
Legend
I met gene years ago at a show he was such a cool guy really laid back and friendly
Gene is the best and is as nice in person as youd ever want to meet. Met him in Detroit. Death Individual thought patterns.
I know he’s being genuine but I’m just imagining Gene behind the camera holding up signs telling Scott what to say
Legend
Mind of a Safe!
Nothing is going anywhere.
✌️❤️
A monster drummer👏👏🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🥁🥁🇨🇦
Gene, you are the man. 🤘
Scott is the interviewest guy on earth, i belive...
The answer to that is simple....This is GENE HOGLAN....
He's called the machine for a reason
I think it shows how humble gene is as a human being just asking for an energy bar when he didn't need to. Not having crazy demands like Lars or Alex van Halen would. The best in the world don't gloat they are the best.
I remember and own some Dark Angel CDs. If I am remembering correctly, you were a primary song writer for their riffs.
Gene “The Machine” 👍🏼
Gene, a class act heavy weight champion, litteraly!
Gene perfected drums while being relaxed wait this is ultra instinct
Only you Master, only you Hoglan!! \m/
Gifted Beast 👍👍👍
Damn it! I knew Mr Hoglan was a sick dude - but this? Holy crap!
Mindblowing with bacon on top!
Gene !!!!!!!!!!!!
Gene hoglan is a Beast darkest descent, Dan Lilker played bass for Nuclear Assault and dark angel I was 14 years old Augsburg Germany in the Rock fabric
why 3 dislikes? I don't get it... what's to dislike?
It’s called enjoying what he does.
I think Gene belongs on the metal Mt. Rushmore, he's a living legend.
Is the best
He's the goat. Hands down one of the best metal drummers out there.
Wait...what happened to Charlie during that tour?
because gene is the atomic clock!!
the atomic beast!!
That "1" dislike makes me cringe.
That 1 dislike was from Justin Beiber
The other 2 are Kanye and lil Wayne
God Gene
everyone talking about death and testament. sure. fire. but he opened up to some insane level with strapping young lad in terms of power and precision. i mean listen to shitstorm and come back here
Gene is the shit
people try to tell me about Niel Peart, Tommy Lee, John Bonham, and im just like naw man...Gene Hoglan
Tommy Lee?!
I consider Gene to be the Vinnie Colaiuta of metal: the first guy to call when a band needs the best.
1:14. Can I have one of those
Energy bars ?
Gene is a drumming god, nothing more to say
No wonder, Scott, Gene is atomic.
Anybody else jealous of Scott’s facial hair??
so what happen to Anthrax original drummer ???? Gene is fucken awesome!
I think he had family issues at the time. Don't remember what it was since it was quite a while ago.
And they say nice guys finish last...
The drummers drummer
I see Donkey Kong in the background
Weird to hear this guy not talking about himself for a change.
The two thumbs down look awkward. Surely they were a mistake.
Is there a shortage of drummers or something?
No but a good drummer with a good personality attitude are easy to deal with and pummels like gene are rare
Let me guess.... Because Gene's DA MAN? Just riffing here...
It’s called “commitment”, Ian! 🙄
Well... cymbals are expensive...you need the money :)
1:04 whos feet =P
I turned 666 likes into 667. Bless you all, guys!
Gene is God
lol energy bars
Wayyy better than Louis
In this case, playing in a band is completely different than working a shit job (which people do to earn a living, production is the incentive to work and not money-As capitalism apologists would say), So, to say "give it his all" in this case, is indeed cool. People are assholes to say that, or to just "go with the flow", when it comes to shit jobs. Fuck that.
That's just empty motivation, because we all know capitalism sucks, but, nobody wants to change anything.
I'm surprised that Scott didn't try to sell Gene energy bars, being that he's a Jew.
Just playing! I'm Jewish as well 😎
meanwhile, 'working stiff' drummers play 4 or 5 45min sets per night, 2 or 3 times a weekend for years on end for a fraction of the pay.
Bitter much? That's what struggling artists do. Their time will come where they don't have to work like that. Besides that, Gene was playing two consecutive sets of very fast intricate music within minutes of each other for bands that are much different from each other as far as thrash goes. What Gene pulled off for that tour was admirable and should be greatly respected instead of looked down on and devalued by the likes of YOU.
@@davidg1612 play music much? I'm sure you know what it's like to lug your own equipment around setup, breakdown, load in, load out all the while doing 4 or 5 45min sets. Gene doesn't need the likes of fanboys like YOU defending him. When you are looking up things on the interwebs acting like you know what you are talking about, make sure to look up 'wisdom'. It's a foreign concept to you.
Whining less and drumming more would be my suggestion....
@@rwoods2k He doesn't need defending but he doesn't also need twats like you whining about him like a little bitch.
How do you play that much and eat so little, just to remain a human mountain?!
Gene smokes?
Scott = Dave Grohl
Enough Hollywood😒
ian should have gotten hair replacement years ago
Why is it impressive that someone who has played 100's of 1000's of hours of drums in his life can play a 65 minute set and a 90 minute set back to back? What is his supposed to somehow not be able to play going into the 66th minute?l
air drum a set of Testament Live then come back and post feedback,
You've obviously never played drums to Testament or Anthrax....
It's a tough work out sure, but that's what they've trained their whole life to do, the talent is impressive, the fact they can do it for a length of time isn't to me. It's like an athlete who trains to run marathons, that's what they do, it's not impressive that they can do it if that's what they're trained for, of course they gonna be able to do it.
Bill Hicks You honestly think he had trained his whole life to double book tours? lolwut
What the fuck are you on about? it's not hard to understand, why is it impressive for someone who's played drums their whole life to play to play for two hours straight?? it's fucking not.
