Does Disney still have creative control of this aspect of Henson's output? I'd wait in line to join Tiana for this lovely trip up the river. Are all those robot critters just gathering dust in some Warehouse somewhere? What a pity if so...
It’s one thing to make Muppet characters ride bikes, it’s another that they made this whole little town small to size for all those characters. If only they could do something like this again.
I love the way the Riverbottom Nightmare Band sounds like Spinal Tap… years before Tap graced us with their punctuality. For someone not trained as a musician, Paul Williams was using advanced writing techniques for this soundtrack. This is easily the best Xmas special of that era.
This program was genius--start to finish. I love that otters are all poor but they live it without complaining--without even mentioning it. Their joy is not in material things but in music and each other. Henson and company made these wonderful otter Muppets knowing they would never be used again. Some years back, when the Smithsonian mounted a traveling exhibition of Muppet art, Emmet Otter was included.. Seeing that the Jim Henson Company has been re-aquired by Jim's children and it is still located on the former Charlie Chaplin Studio in Hollywood, I think it would be the ultimate tour experience if the company dedicated some space on the lot to a similar exhibition of the art of Henson and the Muppets. I think tourists, especially those with young children, would be clamoring for a ticket.
The cool thing about this story is that you expect one of the two good guys to win or tie but you can't believe the mean animals WIN. BUT they they throw a twist where losing a competition isn't the end. They get a steady job doing something they love which means they are better off than winning the contest. That was quite something different to teach kids. You don't always win but if you work at it you might get something even better.
Thank you so much for posting. I was born in 74 and would watch it every Christmas. Even until I was into my 20’s. I haven’t seen it in probably 2 decades or more, but I still enjoy watching. I’m just a big kid anyway…😁
I love anything with Jim Henson ...and sadly I don't remember ever seeing this...how could I have missed it? Well I found it now and I'm going to watch it with all of the other classics...like A Charlie Brown Christmas, Rudolph, Frosty and I also love The Walton's:A Homecoming (reminds me of an old fashioned Christmas)🎄

I’m just barely into my 20s and my mom and grandpa would always sit me down to watch this every single year. I hope having it here makes it so that we can keep the tradition moving.
I really really really hope today's kids get to see this masterpiece. I rewatch this every year at Christmas. It's as good now as it was when I was small child.
I watched this is kindergarten and thought it was a fever dream. at the age of 23 I finally figured out what this movie was and got to experience it and appreciate it for being so good .

I'm 54 and when I watch it I do what I did as a kid put the TV on the floor grab the blanket and pillow and lay on the floor only now I just have 2 dogs that'll lay beside me
With the state this country is in right now we need a video like this. The words, songs and message really hits home. So sad there is so much hate in the world. 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Love this movie.
One of the best Christmas movies ever. 😊
Haven't seen this since I was a kid and I totally forgot all about it til stumbling upon it here...
Jesus-Jim Henson is forever beyond brilliant!
Words simply don’t do this masterpiece nor Henson enough justice!!!!
THIS MOVIE WAS EVERYTHINGGG !
For anyone who’s interested, Emmett Otter is playing live in downtown Chicago until the end of the year (2023)! It is Jim henson’s actual studio too!
that's awesome :)
I just saw that on NBC5, which made me come here to watch this! Haven't seen it in years.

I watched this growing up and just rewatched it just now the good memories come flowing back thanks for posting this ❤
I remember watching in 1986.

Mind-blowing that the arm inside Ma is also the arm inside (and the voice of) Yoda. Kids of my generation were so blessed. :)
First time I’ve seen this in 35 years❤

This randomly popped up in my feed. I watch all the old christmas specials in Dec every year but this is the first time I ever heard of this special.
I watch this every year. Thank you and Happy Holidays 🙏🏾🎄
How the heck do you film puppets in a boat? Are the puppeteers in scuba gear? This whole production is just next-level, even for Henson (The Master)
I just read on Wiki that some scenes utilized remote-control. That explains the Riverbottom jalopy. Possibly the boats...
This takes me back years! It used to be aired on HBO every year. Best Christmas show EVER 🥺❤️💚

There is a bloopers of this. Absolutely adorable and hysterical.
My very favorite Christmas special.
The River-bottom Nightmare Band are rude jerks - but they do rock. This special is one of my favorites!
Though Nightmare Band is hard rock I always thought the bear looks like Elton John turned into a bear. Makes me giggle.
We don't wish to learn, but we hate what we can't understaaaaaaand.... RIVERBOTTOM NIGHTMARE BAND!!!!!
They're so cute !
I have to say that’s a great band name though
My teacher showed this because we were learning about theme, and loved it, so I watched it again!

So does my family (on my father’s side). This was one of my late uncle’s favorite things to watch on Christmas Eve.

Both Emmett and his mom staked everything a very foolish gamble.
Yes, it came from love and their intentions are good, but still, it was unwise.
34:43 You Can Do It, Otters!
I wonder why the parts with Kermit the Frog had been left out.
Apparently due to license issues since Disney owns the rights to the main muppet characters but not the one-off specials like this one
And Emmet's Mother asking the fox to just fall off the dock.

According to the Muppet wiki website, the original 1977 version didn't have Kermit's narration.
How do they make the puppets move while they’re in the row boat?
Mind blown
Why did they cutout the part, where she says, fall off the dock?

Where's the part where Emmet's Mother asks the lady to just fall off the dock?
It was cut out of this version. All of Kermit the Frog's scenes were cut as well, because when this was re-released, Disney didn't own him yet.
