Easily one of her best songs ever. Her wordsmithing and ability to paint a vivid picture with simple language is just phenominal. Taking the human condition and being able to describe it with just precision and empathy...she is a master of music.
Her music is honest to the core. There is no pretence, just timeless radiance.
Like fine wine Mary your just becoming magically lovelier deeper soulful sweetness that is as light as spring breeze Thank you
Chapins songs touch your heart as well as your soul, just beautiful
IMHO, this song, this version, complex in its simplicity, is her masterpiece.
Every time I hear this song it elicits very strong emotions- sadness, regret, sorrow, but hope as well. She taps into the shared experience like no other songwriter.
Her Songs From Home weekly series got so many of us through long, dark times during the pandemic. But I return to this recording for its raw honesty and beauty. Incredible.
Wondering why so many of the comments are turned off to many of her songs. She's a legend!!
Yes, if you all remember, I said goodbye to you all.with a heart. I'm still here, this world got worse. Can you imagine after civic ...it just got worse. Love you still!
Covid.
My favorite country singer. Voice, song writing, all of it. Are old men allowed to have crushes?
Mary Chapin Carpenter can fill your ears with her lovey sound...fill your heart with the dimensions of life...fill your mind with the thoughts: past, present, future...the serenity of her soul is passed to you as you contemplate her lyrics...she can calm your heart or fill your eyes with involuntary moisture...a profound poet with a guitar...she is a gift from God...an island for the weary of the music industry.
How eloquently said.
BRILLIANTLY put. Thank you!
Very well put. She is absolutely a gift.
This woman is a pure, mighty river of soul. Glad to be if only a small stretch of its banks ...
The older she gets the better her voice. She is unique, just no other word for it. You feel tears as soon as she starts--every time.
Wow, my REPEAT button gets set for this beautiful performance! Voice, lyrics, instrument, talented camera work, talented sound work and the calmness and confidence of a brilliant performance...a real masterpiece! THANK YOU!
Best song that was ever written..
When Taylor Swift's beauty fades.. I bet she won't sound as good as this... This is genius.
Without fail, every time I see MCC in concert, I walk away feeling a bit more hopeful about humanity. That's good enough for me.
I found this page by simply doing a Google Search using "whatever happened to Mary Chapin Carpenter?" I have most of her old CDs and have always loved her lyrics, perspective, and voice. This is a beautiful song, beautifully delivered. I'm going to try to stay in touch with her and her music much like I keep in touch with John Fogerty and his music and that is via RUclips. Thank the lucky stars for RUclips, ya know? As an aside, wouldn't a pairing of Mary Chapin Carpenter and John Fogerty on an album(or even just a song or two) sound great?
Mary Chapin is one of the best songwriters of her generation. As another songwriter I ascribe to two women. Joni Mitchel and Mary Chapin Carpenter. They are genius in spinning a story, taking you on a stroll, in a break up, in a lonely place..storms and rain and all things movement. They are beyond what most of us can birth.....This song is haunting and I thank her so much for writing it.
Well said!
plus Janice Ian...
Yes add Janice Ian, my 3 favorite female singer songeriters. Arent we lucky to live at the same time as they? For the 3 I am so grateful
@@reason5591 & Dr Lynn Schriner, I assumed you may not heard of Sandy Denny, well better late than never. An early surprise new year gift for you both. For sure MCC, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez are terrific songwriter/performer (well known).
to billie holiday, sandy denny, arundhati roy 🍄🌄🦄🐞🦚🇺🇲🏴🇮🇳🌬👏🌻🦋💗🕉🙏✌🏾.............🤓
I agree ... but might you maybe have forgotten Ricky Lee Jones, Alison Krauss or Vashti Bunyan and the likes ..?
Phenomenal song, lyrics and rendition. Thank you, Ms Carpenter!
This tune and the deep poetry calm me, allow me perspective and help me to move on!
@Ursula Mulder Was here today, wishing you well.
@Audrey Felső - Checking in today. This remains a most phenomenal song. Best wishes to you.
💜
Ms carpenter you are my hero, I have listened to your music for many years and once had the pleasure of seeing you live in Cambridge, I could only hope in my life to emulate your thoughts and music, thank you for who you are xxx
An incredible story teller. I love your songs from home. Such a wonderful way to start my day in the middle of a pandemic. Thank you for your gift
Mary, your voice is like a good Wine; the older, the better !!!

“There’s comfort in a late night kitchen’s radio”...
Beautiful.
Incredible woman, as beautiful and relevant as ever. Mary, I've loved you forever.
Beautiful poetry by a beautiful soul. Thank you Mary.
Have loved Mary's music for 20 years and more. Heartfelt lyrics we can all relate to. Touches my heart.
I so agree, saw her perform in Basingstoke, hampshire last week and it touched my soul all over again.
I got chills from this. Her voice just wow
Sparkling magic ... I heard her voice, I saw her sing ... I then knew I'd never get back to where I once belonged ... She's not perfect, no, she is completely different: she is unearthly touching ...
Mary and her voice is like a good wine - the older the better..
She sounds the same, familiar, warm, welcoming voice. Thoughtful lyrics and beautiful melodies that linger!
I love this woman. She can see into my soul and, somehow, bring it out into the light as a beautiful song.
Mary ended her concert here in Canterbury with this beautiful soulful song - a few tears as we connected to the words and her soulfulness. Beautiful x
As always, a class on her own. Beautiful songs sung by a beautiful woman.
So thankful to have upgraded my computer speakers (Klipsch) and hearing some of her songs over again--what a difference. As if she is in my house playing live!
Noises in my head
And endless should-haves rain
On me like a storm
Like a hurricane
Losses piled up like wood
Stacked stories high
Feels like I've been framed
I have no alibi
Used to be that all I needed
Was what I didn't possess
Yearning makes you who you
End up as, more or less
Whatever choice I made
That worked out
Was just a lucky guess
Just a lucky guess
Adventures half-discarded
Half held onto now
dancing on the ledge
To the edge somehow
I can still pick out the faces
Though I forget the names
And places that I've gone
But the urge remains
To throw caution to the wind
Or is it to the stars?
To hold out my open hands
Despite my empty arms
To wear my heart down on my sleeve
Just like a battle scar
These are battle scars
There's comfort in a late night
Kitchen's radio
And in a letter sent
Lists of what you know
When you don't know anything
You make another one
It's good to write it down
Starting with the sun
And sometimes church bells
Trees and seasons
Marking times gone by
Sometimes starlings swell
Some tidal moons
And filled up eyes
Sometimes everything at once
But sometimes just the sky
Sometimes just the sky
Thx!
Thank You 🙏
I have decided this is my favorite MCC song ever. That is no small decision considering her body of work. What a tremendous song writer. Love the tuning on her guitar and it took me a couple of days to figure it out. All the best to you.
What is the tuning please? Can't get it...😖
Would you share the tuning
@@roberthemphill5499 I'm in the same boat
She has a gift for writing ,then sings it, plays it like no one else on the planet...stuns the heart
Thank you for the poetry of your music. I am forever a fan.
Just amazing song .. your certainly up there with the best ...
Amazing guitar sound. And the voice always.
My God, what an artist. Love her. She and Rodney Crowell are simply national treasures I gladly embrace.

What an outstanding performance by an outstanding singer-songwriter.
Very prolific well written song.
Lovely singing and music
This performance guts me
Oh, Mary. Thank you. I adore you and your real, raw songs.
Her lyrics just open me up, I enjoy every metaphor and story. They teach so much. The honesty and presence in her voice bring me to the moment.
Grateful
Beautiful writing and the voice is truly a gift.
She sounds great. Paste does a great job with the sound.
This could calm the wildest storm!
Thank you, thank you Mary. I've gotten so much pleasure from your music videos that you've been gifting us with lately.
I feel that I could listen to your songs over and over but still discover a meaning or feeling I I didn't get before.
Mary Chaoin, You're so lovely; your voice and your lyrics..
True beauty.
My favourite singer and just so love her music which touches your very soul
A voice like warm honey. A song that tells a timeless story. What else is there to say?
I first heard mcc somewhen around 1989. In no time, I had banned her from my musical planet, obviously not knowing what I was doing. And now, just by chance, I stumbled over her latter work.
Now, THIS makes me humble and, upon all, grateful to all the people who, unlike me, kept faith in her and by doing so, helped to this very place of eternal beauty that never will be just the sky.
I want to say endless tnx to Mrs. Chapin Carpenter. Springsteen saved my youth, she is right now saving my middle years.
This is such a beautiful song and is great to add harmony to. It could use a chorus where the tone changes a bit, but I love it.
Thank You.....Love and Peace...
Mary just blessed us in Columbus Ohio.....extraordinary!
Enjoyed your concert tonight at Wolf Trap 8/11/18, featuring your new disc. The concert was your best concert at this venue. Just terrific. Had to buy the new CD.
love to you too Mary ! big hug!
what a beautiful song.
have always enjoyed her work
Beautiful
Beautiful song and performance.
Absolutely love this!
Beyond beautiful ....musician & song ♥️🙏🏻
Blissfest Harbor Springs MI 2018! Can't wait.
Wow...beyond words and emotion...I have listened to her from the beginning but she has truly become one of the greats!!! Simply, honest, raw and pure...
Now that I am older I can truly see the genius and emotion in and behind her...
I'm ashamed to say that I've only just given this lady some proper attention. What a fool I've been, she is a true phenomena. I'm going make up for lost time.
Ian Smith, you are a bigger fool then you presumed. Hey man listen to Sandy Denny.

MCC is such a good storyteller. She reminds me of Suzanne Vega in that regard. They should record an album together.

I'm desperate too to find which tuning is Mary using on this song!!!!
HI MARY WHEN ARE YOU COMING TO THE U.K . RAY TWELVE STRINGS U.K
We are not worthy.
Is this guitar tuned down and then drop D?? Or possibly an open tuning?? Who knows I love this song and what to learn it. Tx in advance . Help! SOS lol
Her Time Sex Love saved me from suicide!
Anyone know the tuning to this song?
Does anyone know for sure what the microphone is?
She's always been better than Reba McEntire ! Great voice, fantastic songs and an honest and down to earth appearance.
Does anyone know the tuning she's in?
My question exactly!
Guitar tuned to G. Start here> FMaj7.
Looks like C# - A - E - G# -B -e. Interesting one; trying it, now
@@patrickgmcnamara
Can you report back to us on how it goes? Better still ... make a vid?
@@DavidAndrewsPEC It's correct. Not too tricky.
Looks like she needs a few drinks
Her hairline got pushed back.
Love this woman, her songwriting and her voice.
Beautiful
