      Especially since Filly seems to be the largest active settlement in the area, it makes sense that you'd head to a major hub where there's more people to ask about your father, Wilzig, etc. That's why Maximus and Titus were going to Filly (other Brothers were looking in other locations); best place to show pictures of someone you're looking for, more chance of running into that person.

      @@lemastrenot really. This is a story of how the lives of these three characters intersected in filly. If they started with that scene you wouldn't think it was convenient that they met there. There are many other knights and bounty hunters out looking for Wilzig. We don't see their stories.
      Think if it this way. You are on a road trip and go into a gass station and ask for directions. The clerk helps you. Then another traveler chimes in too. If I then did a back story of what each of you did that lead up to that moment, it's not convenient that you just happened to meet up. It's the story of how you ended up in the same store at that time.

    Maximus hasn't actually done anything bad yet. He allegedly put a blade in someone's boot (not proven), he chose not to save the life of someone that put him in mortal danger, and he attempted to save someone's life despite not having been trained on how to pilot a suit of power armor. And this is all as someone who grew up on the surface where everyone is a monsterous A-hole.
    He could, and arguably should, be doing a lot worse to a lot more people.

    Maximus' action makes sense if you understand his view of Knights and the Brotherhood. To him they saved his life, they are noble heroes who save the day and kill villains. Titus was a sniveling asshole, completely ruining Maximus' expectations of this quest he was on, so he takes the armor and takes ownership of the quest.
    Interestingly the first thing he does after taking ownership is save a Vault dweller, pretty much as innocent as you can get in the wasteland without being a child. This is how Maximus imagines a Knight should act, even to the point of ignoring the actual purpose of the quest, he chooses to stop the killer threatening the innocent. He isn't very good at it, but he is pretty much just playing Knight at this point, playing out the fantasies he had in his head during training.

      Don't defend garbage.
      It's like this throughout the show. Everything is contrived.
      Previous episode, raiders killing everyone, Hank + Lucy stumble into the hostage situation by the exit.
      "I want to shoot things"
      They land early, they go exactly the cave where their target just was, who also has just met the other main character right before.
      Spoilers for later:
      Ghoul tracking device.
      Lucy just stumbles across Maximus in the armor, when they both urgently need something the other has or they die. She shouldn't even be there.
      "Our surface team found your armor, and somehow transported it here." So that Maximus can use it to fight them and steal their fusion core so that Lucy can teach him a lesson.
      Thaddeus leaves dogmeat in cooler, so that Ghoul can stumble across her/him.
      These are just the most obvious logistical contrivances, when you look at dialogue and character it's far worse. Everything is working toward a sub-par payoff through nonsense means.

      The rest of the show is way worse than just those logistical contrivances.
      Try to explain the inciting incident, explain Moldaver's plan.
      This is a different medium.
      If my criticism was "how do stimpacks work?" Your response might make some sense, even if the show's portrayal of stimpacks is vastly inconsistent.
      I don't need the mechanics of how stimpacks work, or energy weapons.
      I do need characters to be characters rather than whatever the plot wants them to be.
      In the games, things are temporally locked until you go there, or whatever the trigger is. If you do that with a show or movie, you don't have world/scale, stakes or characters. You have set pieces that don't work because all you can see is "then this happened" scrawled over it by the writers. Because they couldn't be bothered or were incapable of getting there.
      The game's stories suck too and nobody's going to dispute that.

    It's a non-linear storyline. As we see events unfold, that doesn't mean that's the order they are happening. I feel it is a more streamlined way to understand how events tie together for the story. I also feel it's more natural to show rather than tell. Exposition from a character explaining to another character how the world they both live in works is very jarring to me and breaks the immersion.

  • @RocketSurgn_
    @RocketSurgn_ 7 месяцев назад +10

    I genuinely find it interesting how differently people experience stories and what elements they build their understanding of stories from. It really surprises me when people are so thrown off/focused on timelines not being specifically given like travel times between places (or those times being compressed to line up with the narrative). It’s not a concern I almost ever notice so I don’t really understand the focus on it. I’ve always operated on the assumption that because of different strengths and weakness inherent to telling a story in film/tv they have to use some flexibility in how long they show things taking, esp travel and distances. It’s never bothered me, even as someone that does pay attention to details as well as structure of the story being told. Not criticism of that focus, just interesting differences between people on even such a foundational level for what makes “good/understandable storytelling structure”. I certainly have my own things that can be hard to ignore and take me out of the story.
    That all said with some clear exceptions like a Nolan type overlapping time skips situation… there I’m on board with more specific timing being needed at some point for it to line up.

  • @generalx13
    @generalx13 7 месяцев назад +28

    Honestly, all the important characters meeting so suddenly actually tracks well with the games if you just play the main quest line and skip past the side quests. The timeline for the first 2 episodes is sort of sporadic to just show how everone got to where they are. Chronologically, the scientist escaping happened first, then the ghoul being woken from the grave, then Maximus and Lucy's intros were probably about the same time. Everybody converging on Filly at the same time wasnt totally luck, but in game probably would be a couple hours into bumbling through the wasteland.

    • @RocketSurgn_
      @RocketSurgn_ 7 месяцев назад +8

      I’d agree with that. I think part of why I’ve never had a problem with “luck” like characters running into each other or happening to survive something through blind luck is that I look at it as similar to “survival bias” in research/logic. In stories, even historical ones, you don’t hear about the people that didn’t survive or who didn’t stumble into the important events that the story you are reading has focused on so the impression of how unlikely the events are is skewed.
      You only have a sample of the characters that were included, so it looks like everyone that mattered got incredibly lucky but really those characters were included _because_ they were the ones that ended up there. If it was fiction, would Ben Franklin having been involved in so many major events as he really was be an implausible string of luck/“bad writing” or was he a historical figure because he was involved in all those things?

    • @RocketSurgn_
      @RocketSurgn_ 7 месяцев назад +4

      In case the context helps, with survival bias the classic example is the image of the world war 2 bomber with sections of the wings full of bullet holes representing the distribution of most common places for the bombers to be damaged when they get back to base after missions. Then the question: where should armor be added to be most useful? The answer that can seem obvious, armor the areas that data shows were hit the most, is wrong… they were the places where damage still allows the plane to get home so the gaps (engines, pilot, etc) are the areas that need protecting… but you never get data (“the story”) about what happened to/where damage was for the ones that don’t make it.

    • @gottagowork
      @gottagowork 7 месяцев назад +3

      Also, this sort of "convenience" apply to pretty much everything wrt storytelling these days; take away one and the whole premise doesn't work, why is this a complaint and how do you get around it with the limited screen time you have? But especially in games, and more especially in RPGs. I.e. Malcolm (star caps dude iirc) will always conveniently run into you. Even back in tabletop dice rolling times.
      It's worth mentioning that the TV show sometimes wonder off the beaten track of classical storytelling, and utilizes game mechanics instead. Fans of the game will immediately recognize VATS, critical hits, successful and failed spell checks, perks (maybe also traits). Less obvious ones are fast travel and how time work. Only time I think time was attempted implemented was back in Daggerfall days, where quests *DID* have a time limit and means of travel mattered (fast travel is the *ONLY* way to travel there due to the nuts huge size of the map). Introduction of The Ghoul happened ways off of California, then he just magically appeared there. Just like fast travel and no real sensation of time passing.
      So basically, Fallout isn't doing classical story in the Fallout universe, it's trying to be Fallout the game in the Fallout universe, but still through several lenses which is not the case in game.

    • @SergioLeRoux
      @SergioLeRoux 7 месяцев назад +7

      It would only be a coincidence or "convenience" if all characters were buddies and just happened to meet again in some random town. None of the characters have any (direct) relation to each other, and they met. Anything that happened before, was set-up for them meeting. If they hadn't met, but instead a different 4 characters had met, then we would have watched the setup for those different 4 characters.
      It's like watching a WW2 movie and saying "that this one guy survives everything while everyone else dies is a stretch!" instead realizing you are only following this guy because he is the one that survived all the crap, and we didn't follow any of the others who survived 10%, 25% or 75% of the movie.
      EDIT: And I just realized I'm basically repeating what @RocketSurgn_ said, so anyway, I agree.

  • @NonsensicalGaming
    @NonsensicalGaming 7 месяцев назад +12

    Well, all of the main characters meeting isn't too convenient when you think that they all come from different places. They'd choose perspectives of characters that would be the ones interacting with one another unless they wanted to tell three completely different stories, which could be cool in its own way. I think that Lucy was likely close to Filly as the Doctor came to her campfire. He likely had gone on and camped later than her, which might be why he shows up in Filly later, because he had already been traveling longer. Now, no spoilers obviously, but if these same characters are somehow separated by time and space, then only them having similar goals would make sense that they'd all come back together. Otherwise I think THAT would be more convenient and feel worse to me. But so far, The Ghoul was looking for the Doctor, so was Maximus, and Filly was likely the closest town to her vault. So, seems like it makes sense. I just hate when shows have people magically reconvene altogether in the same place without any common purpose for being there. Love your reactions! From a fellow storyteller.

  • @fobbles_

    I didn’t have any trouble telling the passage of time in this show. We know the ghoul came from somewhere else cause the people who dug him up said he had to go to California. If it was a long way away then he probably walked for a long time. Lucy is in California. And Maximus and the knight went by helicopter over a large distance.
    Obviously some amount of time has passed since the old man went on the run, because both the brotherhood found out somewhere far away and a bunch of mercenaries groups (all 6 agencies) found out. All six agencies must be pretty important, that’s why they got Mr. Ghoul.
    Maximus seems like an abuse victim who sees good as something tangible to strive for. Not really a bad guy right now. But, he also apparently grew up in a militant order filled with people saying stuff like “May the cloth if the future be carved by your sword!” So yeah he’s probably an extreme thinker. But I wouldn’t say bad yet… he’s my favorite so far he’s the most interesting

  • @RunningTogether
    @RunningTogether 7 месяцев назад +5

    There was a lot of luck in finding each other, but they aren’t “all in walking distance”. Maximus was transported to near Filly in the vertibird as they stated in this episode, because The Brotherhood had reason to think the target was in the area. We have no idea how long it took The Ghoul to get there, because the show didn’t bother to show boring travel, it figured on the important bits. It also didn’t focus on exactly where the ghoul was dug up or how long ago it was versus now, so anything could’ve happened for him to get there. The target finding Lucy was due to her campfire making her visible from a distance, so only the Brotherhood finding the bear cave was truly unlikely. Everyone meeting in Filly makes sense since it’s apparently the only “large” town in the area, so it’s where you’d go for transport or if you were looking for information as everyone involved was. The exact timing of Maximus’ arrival was of course very convenient for the story, but while a lot “luck” was involved, the coincidences aren’t completely terrible (I admit they’re a bit of a stretch though, but that sort of fits the whole Fallout vibe IMO).
    Well, there maybe been one but that limited travel time for The Ghoul, because I think he said the bounty went out “Last night” or some such… but her maybe been mistaken about the timing since the heard it secondhand from the folks who dug him up. It is true it probably was less than a week.
    The first episode’s vault story seemed to take place over a bit more than a day, or at least there was one night in between the start and when Lucy left (Which appeared to be afternoon off the next day).
    But we don’t know when Maximus’ story started in comparison, though it too seemed to take a bit more than a day (The one night was when he woke up to Dane screaming about their foot).
    Great reaction as always! 👍

    Not sure what was confusing about Maximus time line, first he is bullied, then he went to class, then he was doing chores, then He and Dane checked out the power armor ,then Dane was promoted. It's kinda hard to pin point ALL the stuff about the game incorporated into the series, first of all, because it's a SHIT TON of stuff, and no one would be reading every single thing without being bored as fuck
    BUT
    For the sake of this episode:
    3:18 The dog is a recurring thing, you kinda always get a dog companion, this scene KINDA makes the dog companions make a little more sense, since they all can take commands very very very well, and are not mutated. Maybe someone is actually training those dogs.
    4:30 "Please remain calm" is a really good nod to the series tone of humor, this will happen more times as we go about with the episodes.
    5:04 Radroaches are also a thing in the game. Cockroaches that are almost as big as a small dog in the games too.
    6:32 CRAM doesn't really stand to anything, but my guess would be "various meats CRAMMED into a can". That's a before the war product in the games, so, no apocaliptic meats there anyway
    7:14 That's a mutated bear, yes. They are called Yao Guai, and, boy do those scare the shit out of me. Hate those things.
    7:37 Curious this one: Stimpaks are kinda like "the healing potion" of the game. You can recover Health Points by eating, sure, but stimpaks are more "instant" (not always). You can see the Ghoul using one in the dog later to cure it. There is an episode of a show in the internet explaining what a real life stimpak would be (of course, they can't be real, duh, BUT, what it WOULD HAVE TO BE, to be real.). It's on Shoddycast's channel, but it's a damn 20 minute long, unless you're invested into fallout, I doubt you'd watch that, but for those that are invested and reading my comment, check it out.
    8:29 This scene was created to mimic the first arrival at Megaton, in the third game (and did a quite good job if you ask me).
    8:46 Yes, cow with two heads, those are called Brahmin.
    10:50 Some people said that, this fight was a nod to a perk (a trait, if you will) that you can get in the game called "bloody mess perk", which will serve nothing other than, ocasionally, blowing up you enemies in the most "mortal kombat-esque" of the ways, with lots of blood, guts, members and bones exploding away. I personally don't think so, but do note that, the Ghoul's revolver, although not being in any game so far directly, is a very much feisable weapon in this world, firing what seem to be mini-tini-tiny-nukes, or rather, "explosive ammo". I say that it's feisable, because in the game, you can actually get a "mini nuke launcher" and it does exactly what you might be immagining right now.
    11:14 The reason I started writing this comment: The junk jet. Although it doesn't really makes a lot of sense to show up in the series (specially twice... kinda... I'll explain) it's a really fun item that just HAD to make an appearance, so, a concession can be made. That Junk Jet is a weapon in fallout 4, and was based off of a weapon in fallout 3 too (Rock-it something I forgot) and both do the same think: Throw ANYTHING that you load into it, at such STUPID INSANE SPEEDS, that it actually hurts people. Like in the first episode (not watched your reaction yet, going to next) a guy guarding the Ghoul tomb is killed by the junk jet firing a doll's arm into the guys chest. That's hillarious (for the game/show's tone of humor). Makes no sense to show up because, in fallout 4 they make it that the Junk Jet is a prototype. Seeing as it's different from the Rock-it thing, it can be excused showing up again, by being a different weapon even tho with the same mechanics, but that on the show definetely is, the one and only, junk jet. And showing twice... You can argue that The Ghoul hauled it from the guys at his tomb and sold it to this merchant before the scene starts, but they don't really look like the done business, since she even tells he's not welcome there so... IDK.
    Don't know if you'll actually read that all, nor if that's something usefull at all, but I'll do the same on the first episode, you tell me if that's useful at all XD

    In a world that is essentially the wild west people tend to stick near population centers as that's where the closest thing to law or order exist. They use fast travel, a game mechanic to get around fast. Similarly with CX404, he was identified clearly as a "COMPANION", and in fallout, companions can't die (excluding New Vegas Hardcore mode). Instead if severely wounded, they're just incapacitated until player heals them with a stimpak, and the effect is immediate. The show maintains this.

    Lucy's story in the vault happened over at least two days (but being underground it's hard to tell). She got approved for the Triannual trade and got married on one day, spent her wedding night with her new husband, and then WOKE UP the next day to the sounds of combat and the taiders revealing their true nature (eg Monty doesn't know the difference between a towel and a curtain 😱😱😱).
    Meanwhile
    Maximus getting hazed by fellow brothers of steel, in class learning what prewar tech is, playing rock basketball, digging latrines and sneaking off when his (only?) friend invites him to see the T-60 power armor, that Maximus has idolized since childhood only to get busted and his friend taken away only to discover it was not punishment but anointing to be a squire and leave him all alone, which made him mad enough to slam the tire toilet lids. He WOKE UP the next morning to his friend screaming in pain from a blade placed in his boot to slice his ankle tendons. He was suspected, arrested, interrogated, exonerated and promoted to squire and flew off with his Knight--after the target from the Enclave and his companion dog.
    Meanwhile
    Sometime overnight, the Ghoul was dug and told about a huge bounty on a target from the Enclave going to Los Angeles.
    They all ended up in Filly, the largest town nearby.
    Ergo, all three characters stories are occurring roughly at the same time.

    Everyone being in the same area makes perfect sense. First it's not like there are lots of settlements all over the place. Towns, villages, settlements or whatever you want to call them are pretty spread out so everyone going to the local settlement makes sense. Moldaver took Lucy's dad so it makes sense that she would be in the area that he is being taken to. the Enclave put out a bounty for the scientist and it would also make sense that the bounty would go out to people in the area that the scientist would be in. So having the Brotherhood and the Ghoul in the same area and headed to the main settlement in the area also makes sense. The Brotherhood flew most of the way to Filly, and in the time it took Lucy to walk to Filly, the Ghoul also walked to Filly.
    Personally I had no problem keeping track of timelines. They told you that the story after the introduction was taking place 219 years in the future. They didn't say something like "6 months earlier" when introducing the scientist or anyone else. So it is safe to assume that the 3 main storylines are all on the same timeline (219 years after the bombs dropped) and that they are obviously going to intersect at some point. Maybe you're just overthinking it.

    I feel like Game of Thrones conditioned viewers to believe anything short of a few seasons for characters to see each other is pure convenience, but for the sake of a story, these guys gotta meet up sooner rather than later. It's not juggling a dozen storylines at a time, and every episode is (ridiculously) expensive, so getting on with it is important. As long as they use the time they affording wisely, I don't mind the convenience of everyone getting to a small hamlet in California so soon. Besides, we don't know when the Ghoul wakes up or when the scientist escapes the Enclave, so it could have been some time for them. Maximus could have been walking for hours in that suit.

    During the beginning of the series when we hear the radio report about the "missing" president, that's basically when The Enclave was started.
    In Real Life, there's a hotel in West Virginia called The Greenbrier. It was built decades ago as a hotel, and at one point upgraded with a bunker underneath. The bunker is for housing congress in a major emergency.
    In the Fallout Universe, there's a hotel golf resort in West Virginia called The Whitespring has a bunker underneath for The Enclave, which are the remnants of the US government and military complex. There's no reason to not think the president hid there as well.
    Wilzig, being in The Enclave and having access to government records from before the war, realised he had something extraordinary when he accessed VaultTec's records of the vaults and various businesses that VaultTec had aquired.
    So he jammed it in his neck and set off to bring it home. ;)

      @@HannaHsOverInvested The crossing path thing seems to annoy a lot of people but you have to consider how people travel, where are they going and what they are aiming for. Maximus and The Ghoul are hunting Wilzig and CX-404. They know the general area and so are speculatively heading to Filly because it is the biggest town in the area. The Ghoul has better intel than maximus and is waiting at the trader's.
      Wilzig's run and Moldaver's raid are tied to one event. So Lucy leaving and Wilzig being in the area and being drawn to the campfire tally. They are heading in the same direction but Wilzig with a purpose, Lucy not.
      Lucy wanders and is redirected by nappy man to Filly. Wilzig and Maximus are on the same road to Filly. They follow the 'safe' path. From Filly on they are all either going to the same place, following one another or on a side quest.
      If you are all following the same path, or eachother, you will, keep meeting up.

He seems to be shown in ways that give purposefully mixed messages about what kind of person he is, not just what he does but how he’s shown doing it. I’d say Maximus and Lucy are shown as similar levels of naive but in very different ways because of the different environments they were sheltered by.

      I don't understand this thinking. Go to a town, pick out any 3 people. Is it convenient that they are there at the same time ? There aren't that many places in the wasteland where people can get supplies, peeps are going to end up there. Maximus was specifically told to go there. The ghoul and the doctor would already know of Filly and both of them had specific reasons to be there. Lucy was the only one who happened to be nearby by circumstance but was still given directions to it.
      None of them had met or knew each other before except Lucy and the doc. The only reason it seems skewed is because we, the viewers, have been following their stories separately.😀

    Hang in there on Maximus. I was joking with my roommates that he is the player character who chooses the literal worst option for dialogue (whether that's because he's goofing around or because he has low charisma... I like the theory implying the latter.) He starts to get better, but even by the end of this season I had mixed feelings about him overall. Perhaps that is more because of the radical ideology of the Brotherhood of Steel.
    Also, this show does a lot of flashbacks to varioius times. They don't really announce these, so it can be helpful to rewatch even if that's not ideal.
    EDIT: So, the idea of the Fallout games, in general, is that things happen in an ideal, but not ideal, kind of way. The way shooting works, and using the V.A.T.S system, you'll miss by a mile from 10 feet away. The turret missing every shot was a jab at this, as this can literally happen in the game. The stumbling on a Yao Guai (or Deathclaw) and going "ohhh, no, no, no, no, no, ohhhh, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck" is so relatable it gave me and other fans of the games a real good laugh. And, even the plots are convenient. In the first game, your vault's water chip malfunctions and, oh, what do you know? Your character just so happens to get picked to find a replacement in the wastes. In the second game, you're the son of the first main character and get sent on a similar mission. In the third game, you father just so happens to be a currently at-large scientist on the run for his work on a project to purify water in the wasteland. In New Vegas you just so happen to be the courier who picks up the package that everyone and their mother would love to get their hands on. And in 4, you're the sole survivor of a cryogenic vault that malfunctions. As the main character you benefit from improved aim, perks and skills, and the grace of plot armor. In the show, you'll see the same thing happen for our 3 main characters (Lucy, Maximus, and The Ghoul.)

    You could look at it from the standpoint of a video game where you have the option of choosing 1 of 3 protagonists, the main questline is part of each characters story arc but the characters you don't pick to play just become NPCs. It's also possible the showrunners have installed mods that enable all characters to fast travel anywhere on the map regardless of whether or not they have discovered that location. You could also look at it from the POV of Todd Howard: "It just works."😁

  • @craig2196
    @craig2196 7 месяцев назад

    I don't usually do multiple comments but i'll say this,
    in any other setting I'd agree about them all meeting would be convienient, but for a Post-Apocalytic setting, that's probably the only city within a hundred to 200 miles all the smaller settlements would try to just kill you on site..or worse. so a "safe" urban area is VERY rare so it actually makes sense to go there when you're looking for something. Like all our characters are doing.
    for the time thing, I'm not a writer, so to you this might sound stupid but I was always under the assumption that Lucy stayed in the vault for one to two days after the attack. because we see her in a meeting trying to convience a search party, and to me no group of people on the planet would have a calm sitdown less than a day after a bomb got set off in their home. other hints include all the members in the sitdown have seen medical attention and walking. So the time aspect always made sense to me.

    So I hear you on the sense of time but when it comes to faster paced shows like this it's set aside because they don't have time for any one character to spend 3 episodes to get from A to B like Game of Thrones. It would literally slow the pace of the events and make the audience feel like the shows dragging because everything around it is going that much quicker. It's just a different beast. They're all in California, after the same thing, heading in the same direction, and that's gotta be enough, or you'll go crazy. If it helps you can pretend like they're using fast travel like in the games. 😅

    Thanks for the vid... "Say okie dokie!" got me laughing more than it should have. :D About the distances and the main characters meeting conveniently: Others probably said this before me already but a lot of prewar stuff were built around major population centers like in our reality. And after the war people crawled back to these parts because they could scavenge the remains of cities. And because now there are only a few settlements, everyone converges at these for supplies, services and info. Our main characters goals are also connected. (there are other reasons behind this but that would take us into spoiler territory) Maximus and his knight were actually assigned to investigate Filly. The ghoul was probably waiting there for days. The only one who didn't know a lot about the area and just sort of stumbled upon Filly is Lucy. And seeing her as the low level beginner character... that is videogame accurate. :D

    "Am I supposed to hate this guy?"
    A staple in the Fallout games is that all (most?) factions and characters are multifaceted.
    They will have sides that you admire and like, and sides that makes you consider them to be the antagonists.
    You will have to decide if you can overlook the bad parts of a faction because you think the good parts outweigh them.
    in Fallout 4 there are multiple nice factions, but one is basically using semi-sentient AI as slaves and it is up to the player to decide if an android or robot can actually have free will and if it is OK to wipe the memory and reprogram robots that say they want to live but it gives the area the best access to medicine and technology.

    Fallout is (or used to be depending on your opinions) an RPG, meaning you make a character, then continue to advance that character depending on how you personally wantto play, It's fully open world, with side quests, random encounters. you can get dogmeat in every game (well, a dog companion)
    The easiest game to get into is Fallout 4, most modern gameplay, most similiar to the show, very light in tone. colorful. But it's also the least RPG like, and it'll mainly focus on being a shooter your succsess relies on game skill rather than decision making. The further you go back in time (fallout started in 1997!) The more you need to think rather than using instict to survive.
    I actually don't recommend you play them, I remember in a past video you talked about how you kinda go 100% in or stay out of it. Because these games are VERY big its not a linear follow the hallway like last of us. so there's tons of side quests and exploring can be addicting. Obviously not saying you can't do it, But they are a very big time sink for scale the average time to beat JUST the main story. Is over 30 hours for the easiest game to get into!

    Plenty of other comments have pointed it out, but yeah, there aren't many "good guys" in Fallout (edit: I mean the whole franchise). Most people aren't _evil_ per se, but everyone is looking out for their own survival, at best their in-group's survival. The actual games are a little weird because the player character is the only one who has the potential to make factions "make friends instead", but the writing to get there is usually some of the worst that the games have to offer: making various fanatic groups suddenly drop their ideologies as if flipping a light switch. Usually, the stories work better when the factions have clear winners and clear losers, at least in my opinion.

    I see the characters interacting so fast as economic story telling. And they placed the scenes in such a sequence to focus on what is important. Rather than putting Willzig and the dog in Episode 1. So I came to appreciate the story telling and the parallels you will see in future episodes are all carefully and deliberately placed.

    Normally a series is like a movie stretched out into a season. This seems to be compressed like a movie. It's very easy to miss things, and that makes mistakes like time of day stand out more.
    They also do seem to be writing it as a game plot and using game rules, stats and perks. They introduced dog meat(CX 404) as a companion, and a companion can't actually die in Fallout games made after Fallout 3, outside of a nuclear explosion. So long as you have a stim pack they can be saved after a battle, and will in time heal if left and show up again.
    When Lucy was introduced she explained her stats, and tagged skills, as one would create a player character. Maximums didn't do that as he is using a exploit kind of character build, but that was introduced by showing his low stats like intelligence, unarmed, ext... Seems to be a luck/endurance build using the Idiot Savant perk to exploit. That perk rewards you with experience for having low intelligence. He should be very lucky, and fall up in life. I wouldn't be surprised if he was leading an army in season 2 and smartened up.
    Normally it was always putting points into intelligence that gave you more experience or simply more points per level. Lucy seems to be that classic build, but it makes early game very dangerous.
    Some basic game lore background.
    Vault-Tec developed its "most humane" product: Plan D, banana flavored cyanide. That basically explains Vault-Tec.
    "The Enclave is a paramilitary organization and quasi-state originating from the pre-War American deep state consisting of high-ranking political, military, and corporate figures. It claims to be the direct continuation of the United States and its government, despite seizing power by subverting continuity of government protocols and murdering non-Enclave government survivors to continue the war against communism."
    They are very NAZI like, and where Siggi Wilzig came from.
    "The Brotherhood of Steel is a post-War technology-focused paramilitary order with chapters operating across the territory of the former United States. It was founded by rogue U.S. Army officer Captain Roger Maxson shortly after the Great War.
    The Brotherhood's core purpose is to preserve advanced technology and regulate its usage. This is because they believe humanity cannot be trusted with the means to destroy itself, and they acquire technology to prevent another apocalypse."...
    "The Brotherhood's attitude towards mutants ranges from dislike to outright hostility."

    Limited population centers in the area narrows down likely places to go for help. Thus Maximus and the Ghoul ending up in Filly (or Philly - I forget how they spell it on the show). Lucy just lucked into it because it was the closest town to her and the doctor was already heading there. Not that weird really. Looking forward to book 3!!!!!!!

    Maximus is a difficult character to like in the beginning, but he probably goes through the most growth of the three protagonists by the end.
    He's starting off with a very childlike and idealistic view of the world, similar to Lucy, but he doesn't really understand his own identity or ambitions other than wearing the armor. Even though he grew up on the surface, he was also very sheltered like Lucy, but in a much different environment. All of these things are going to be tested.

    the convinces are part of the games. I think the fast jumps to the same place is supposed to be like fast travel in the games.
    This is so fallout that Nolan got down the Bethesda style of writing ( Just adequate enough to tell a story, but the details in the world are amazing and tell there own story)

    *"Power armour"* is not like conventional armour, instead it's a "WALDO" system: you move a small amount to *direct* the suit, and the suit *does the work for you* amplifying the motion, so you have to be very carefully trained so you learn to use appropriate movements inside :)
    It's based on the ideas from "The Forever War" and "Starship Troopers, old classic scifi novels.
    In the Fallout games you often have to get specialist training just to be able to use Power Armour, it's like a mix of normal motion and _piloting_ a vehicle
    Maximus is literally the proverbial "Himbo" :P He's thick, naive and totally out of his depth, but he means well and is very lucky, he's learning on the job. The game even has such builds, as you can play Low intelligence characters, take the "Idiot Savant" perk (which he officially has) and randomly get extra experience, lol
