The 3 main characters do a good job of representing the experiences of actual players. Lucy is the beginner player who is in over their head and knows nothing about the world, Maximus is the intermediate player who decided, "I want that power armor" and joined the Brotherhood of Steel, and the Ghoul is the experienced player who spent 200+ hours doing side quests before continuing the main story.

Also for Lucy, most Fallout games start with the main character leaving their vault out of necessity to find something/someone. So she's representative of most peoples first experience with a fallout game.

I also found it funny because I feel like Maximus had really low speech at the start of the show, because his "dialogue choices" seemed so terrible, and as the show goes on he gets better. I had no expectations for the show and I liked it. I think its what I want from a video game adaptation. Where they capture the feel and tone of the world from the games and the story is good enough to work in a game and show. I do think you are allowed to be confused and somethings will be explained as the show goes on. Will say there are alot of game references in the show that they don't explain, but they are fun little easter eggs. The giant bags the squires are carrying is a inside joke on how players use companions to carry all of their loot. Also, Ella Purnell/Lucy is Jinx from Arcane so she is awesome.

Yes! You are supposed to have many questions at this point, but not due to lacking any game knowledge. There's a bunch of intertwined stories and mysteries that get revealed as it goes. I guess some backstory might be useful, like but not really essential. The alternate reality of this world diverged just after World War 2, and is mostly rooted in how the world perceived nuclear energy after Hiroshima and Nagasaki. ie they embraced it rather than being terrified of it. Oh, and the US annexed Canada at some point. Sorry. :)

I was cautiously optimistic going in, and the show surpassed my expectations. The smartest thing they did was, instead of directly adapting one of the existing games, they just made a completely original story set in the same game universe. And Walton Goggins always makes every movie or TV series better. But overall, I think they absolutely knocked the tone and aesthetic completely out of the park.

This show is phenomenal. Its a lot more accurate to the games then Last of Us was. The problem i had with the Last of Us was that it was a story that was already told through the game. Sure there were some differences but for the most part you knew the overall story. This is an entirely new story that's cannon to the Fallout world and takes place about 9 years after Fallout 4, which is the most recent in the timeline. Everything you see in the world is pulled directly from the games. The tone is perfect. It feels like it belongs in the same world that the games do. I think it helps that the creator of fallout, Todd Howard, had direct involvement with the show. The scenes with Lucy in the vault are pretty much the first hour or two of every Fallout game. Fallout is a massive open wold RPG. Its not a game to play if you don't have the time. Your put in the world and told here are some missions now go explore. If your new to gaming its a little overwhelming because while you have missions you can get easily sidetracked by random quests that have nothing to do with the main story. I highly recommend you watch the season. As you get further in show some of the story is new to even players of the games. It expands the lore instead of the games rather then overwrites it. Season 2 has already been confirmed.

Also, "Raiders" is the word she said you couldn't figure out. Raiders are basically what they call common people in the world above, except they survive by scavenging, and killing.
Similarly to Vikings I suppose. This is also a error in writing. Cause they aren't actually supposed to know about Raider's. That's generally a term you find out in the games, after you gotto the surface.

~The US politics and culture stagnated, stayed around 1950s, continental states organized into 13 Commonwealths
~Dwindling resources led to wars that destroyed Europe and Middle East with limited nuke war etc, Russia stayed out of it but got got wrecked by chaos/fallout
~China invaded Alaska to get last major oil reserves on Earth, led to a 10 year long bloody stalemate war, broken by US deploying advanced "power armour" and portable mini nuke launchers for their troops
~The Great War lasted on 3 hours, HUGE numbers of mostly "small" nukes set to "ground burst" wrecked the US, added to all the nuke powered equipment in cities, left place irradiated.

~Many mutants due to radiation but also...the "FEV" virus (Forced Evolutionary Virus, too long to go into but a major issue in the games and part of why the Chinese nuked America)
~Ghouls are caused by an unusual mutation, when some Humans were hit by lethal radiation they didn't ' die but became ghouls, they have strange healing factor and aren't affected by aging, so can live centuries, but...the healing factor doesn't work on their skin and brains. Ghouls are often discriminated against by normal Humans
~The Enclave is a mysterious very high tech faction, their agenda and higher up are really evil, been defeated twice in the games
~The Brotherhood of Steel were started just before the nuke war, US soldiers mutinied against evil experiments on civilians, their goal was to prevent abuses of science etc, but over time they got fossilize din outlook, too militaristic, began taking tech by force they thought other folk shouldn't have etc. Small in number but very advanced military tech, some factions are ok, others are aholes

My level of Fallout Lore is "Intermediate to Good", I played all the games, I watched loads of Lore videos on RUclips and I'd say that for me this is an amazing adaptation of the world. The story is fully new but still considered canon to the Fallout World.
You will see a lot of gore and splatter as that is very common in the games, you will also see some "game mechanics" such as how Lucy stabs herself with that needle. That needle was a Stimpak, a healing item from the games which instantly heals you and can even help severely injured limbs.
There is SO MUCH fanservice in this show. Basically everything you see in the background is from the games. The colour and textures of the Vault walls, the Vault suits are almost identical, the sound effect as the Raider uses the red-whit einhaler is exactly like the game. In later spidoes you can see food and candy in the background which is exactly from the games, and you will see magazines used to give the player a temporary bonus lying on the tables. The Pip-boys (the wrist-computers) are from the games and it's how the player can view the map, use items, change equipment, etc. Even the background music (the copyrighted 50's music) is straight from the games!
Add to how there are Game mechanics such as how a player heals with the Stimpak, how limbs just.. vanish in explosions, how the player and their companion seems to have infinite bagspace, there is a computerhacking scene later on that's only visible for a second but is exactly how it is in the games.
In short, game players seem to really love the show, and all the Fallout games have seen a resurgence with new players! Fallout 76 (that you watched an Internet Historian video about and how Bethesda were utter A-holes in how they lied and screwed customrs over) making it more popular now than it was evern at its launch!

Heyy, comming from the second episode here to make some notes about stuff that references the games, as I did there
2:28 Yes, it's a wierd future. The game states that, the transistor, a very importante piece of electonics technology we have, was not invented till MUCH further down the timeline in this universe, so stuff evolved differently. Humans found out other ways to make stuff that we have, and with that, came a whole new plethora of techs and stuff that we don't have, cause tech evolved differently there. I don't think this part was explained in the intro videos you watch a while back.
No time stamp in this, cause it's whole episode: The vault's look all EXACTLY like that in the game. I mean, the setting and mood of them, each vault looks different, but the look... It's so spot on.
7:53 Yeah, the stimpak... Explained that on the other one.
9:42 Ah the brotherhood... A very "militar-esque" organization, and you surely perceived, their purpose in the games is solely to stash away pre-war technology, so that people don't use them, in hopes that the nuclear war doesn't break out again. I don't think they REALLY explained that other than this scene. They have all the cool pre-war stuff stashed away. That's why they are also the primary source of power armors, the (yes, they are) heavy looking armors, powered by nuclear energy.
The BIG ship is (supposed to be) the Prydwen, the only one of it's kind so far. Though, that would mean, if I'm not mistaken, that one and only one of the endings to fallout 4 is canon. Maybe it's another ship, somehow. The Prydwen plays a BIG part in that game.
11:33 There are always some outside way to open the door (that's how people from the surface opened vault 32 if you think about it) but you HAVE to have a pip-boy to be minimally able to do so.
13:12 Yeah, the Junk Jet I mentioned in episode 2's comment.
14:43 I don't think they really do explain what a ghoul is, so, it's kinda like the game implies that, if a human takes so much, so so so so much damn concentrated radiation in such a fast dose, it would mutate you into this creature faster than it would kill you, and since ghouls heal faster, and use radiation as "fuel", once you're mutated, the radiation would not kill you anymore, on the contrary, would be beneficial. Here, the ghoul is alive because, SO FAR AS WE KNOW, ghouls don't die of old age (or, at least, they don't die of old age before AT LEAST 200 and some years after "ghoul-ification". If they are not immortal by time passing, they could last 1000s of years, again, as far as we know) and all they aparently need to keep alive and kicking, is radiation, so those bags above the ghoul's grave were radiation bags of some sort, to keep him kicking. In the show, that's no spoiler at all, he keeps taking doses of radiation to keep himself sane, that's not really a think in the game again, as far as we know. In the games, it seems that what drives them insane is just time, loneliness, (un)luck, or it's just purely random.
Hope it's usefull for context 🙂

The guy that lost his head, in the cemetery, was carrying a "Junk Jet", a weapon from the game. It's like a small jet engine, you load the hopper with junk and when you pull the trigger, it launches a piece at high velocity.

Also fallout is like a exploration adventure game where you go on quests “a big main quest” and lots of little “side quests” to do the big main quest eventually!
It’s about picking through ruins and fighting weird creatures to get cool things that hide within while taking time to explore the lore of old broken down places. What happened here? Why is everything nuked? Who dropped the nukes? Why are there super mutants and people in different factions? Why are there people in metal armor?
I think the show does a great job of conveying the feeling of “Lost but adventurously curious.” 😊

The good Fallout games actually tie up most of their side activity to the player's main objective. directly or through those side quests effecting the broader major conflict that surrounds said main objective. See: Fallout 1, 2, and New Vegas.

There is a video out there of a guy who made measurements of the explosions at the beginning of the show.
He concluded that the show completely failed to scale the bombs.
The one we see here were incredibly small bombs, not even deserving to be ranked among the nuclear bombs we know, at about 100 tons TNT equivalents (compared to the "small" 15,000 tons Hiroshima bomb), while nukes these days are in the range 150,000 to 1,000,000 tons bombs.
In the game universe it is said that the bombs range between 250,000 to 750,000 tons.
As a result, from where he and his daughter were standing, they should have been instantly 3rd degree burned by the initial light flash emitted by sucha bomb (and after that blasted away, loosing their ears). They would also have inside the ash cloud as it developped.
The cloud itself would have reached about 20 km high, and obviously covered the entire view.
In other words, they would have died instantly.
Instead of that, what we see here reminds me of the incident which took place not too long ago at a dock in Beirut Lebanon, where a large quantity of ammonium nitrate (a chemical used as an agricultural fertilizer) detonated.

I've watched the entire season; and I've played Fallout games since 1997.
I sometimes tell people, "No, I'm not a gamer, I'm a Fallout player."
I have played Fallout games for thousands of hours over 26 years.
I probably dreaded a TV show Fallout, more than anticipated it.
I love the gameplay and the established lore of the games.
I really enjoyed the show--enough to binge watch the season.
The show captures the lore and aesthetic of Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, the two most recent games in the franchise.
The show also captures the lore of Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout 3 and especially Fallout New Vegas very well.
I wholeheartedly approve of the TV show.
Each Fallout game is a unique story, with a unique setting, and unique characters, all set in the same Fallout universe.
The five latest games in the franchise are entirely open world; and of course, the player character is the main protagonist in each.
The fact that I cannot play the TV show as the main protagonist, playing my way, making my choices, causes me to prefer the games to the show.
But still, I really enjoyed the show, probably enough to buy it.
The games can be more disturbing than anything you'll see in the show.
Fictional post apocalyptic worlds can be more than a little disturbing, and more than a little eccentric, and the Fallout lore knows it.
I'll close with, the leadership team of Bethesda Game Studio has clarified that Amazon's TV Fallout IS lore

Only played fallout a little bit before watching the show but I could tell already it was matching the vibe it's a hard thing to do with video games. But fallout is more about the setting than is about any one persons particular story so I think that really helps this show in particular. If you get the setting right you can tell whatever story you want because they all can fit in the world of fallout.

Really great show that did justice to the games, and I don't think you necessarily need to play the games to understand. Couple things that might make it easier for you; Stimpacks (Thing Lucy injected) is basically a very handy cure-all in game that seems in this universe to be able to close up wounds decently well. Brotherhood of Steel (Maximus' story) is a cult like organization with militaristic structure; They see pre-fallout technology as almost sacred. Lastly, Fallout as whole is a bit gruesome with serious messages delivered with lighthearted comedic vehicles and that is why some things may seem a little outrageous. The world pre-fallout is like Cold War era What-If with some high tech advancements like advanced robotics and lasers it is NOT the exact same as ours. Most of the rest is explained well over the course of the show and i'm excited for you to watch and react!

This show manages to create an engaging story that leaves you hanging on the edge of your seat at the end of every episode while still being incredibly faithful to the tone, appearance, dark humor, and style of the Fallout series games. There are literally thousands of references to in-game things -- pre-war brands, food items, medicine, robots, power armor, weapons, and history. Just as an example, the weapon firing random junk like the doll leg and the scissors is called a Junk Jet. It's based on a weapon you can find in both Fallout 3 and 4, and is essentially an amped up vacuum cleaner that will fire almost anything as a projectile. The injector used by Lucy is an in-game healing item called a Stimpak. It is effectively an instant heal using the magic of late 21st century super medicine (the war happened in 2077, so about 50 years from today in an alternate timeline where nobody invented the microchip).

As someone with **literally** hundreds of hours per fallout game, I was initially expecting it to not be that great, for it to not have stuff for hardcore fans and basically just be establishing the world and characters.
HOWEVER, I actually really enjoyed it, it’s got great writing, characters, set design etc. and it actually is probably the best game-adapted-to-tv-series example I’ve ever seen.
It might be a little rocky to start as I feel it takes a lot of time introducing everything it needs to for people who know nothing about fallout but ep 3 and onwards is just good, solid entertainment.

This show captures the spirit of the games better than any adaptation ever made. This one comes right up along side The Last of Us in faithfulness to the source material, but unlike TLOU, Fallout is fully open world and most games have some variability in possible endings. Every twist of this show is glorious, and the new additions to the lore only serve to improve the fallout universe as a whole. (I mean "improve" in terms of how in depth and exciting the story is, things don't ever get better for anyone)

Fun lore without spoilers for the games or show:
    - This isn't an adaptation! It's a fully original story in the world of Fallout. Bethesda has confirmed that the events of the series are canon to the universe, alongside the games.
    - The opening happens in 2077. The games and series take place in an alternate timeline of America that kinda stayed stuck in post WWII American culture, hence the 1950's style of the clothing, cars, and decor. Nuclear power was highly normalized, and eventually replaced coal and oil. Transistors didn't initially take off, so miniaturization of computers and tech didn't happen until much later.
That's all you need for background!

Also, the item Lucy used on herself after getting stabbed is a Stimpak, an item from the games used for healing. The series is chock-full of game references and Easter eggs, it's a fantastic introduction to the world of Fallout for newcomers. If you ever decide to play one I'd recommend Fallout 4, it's the simplest one that'd be perfect for people fresh to the series. 😉👍

Finally getting around to this. I didn't want Fallout spoilers, but eventually I realized that I wasn't going to be giving Amazon money anytime soon to watch the show.
I honestly don't think that Fallout would be the _best_ game for you to play, from what I remember. Well, it might not be the best for your content. The game is a lot about exploring, wandering, stumbling upon interesting stories and people. They also tend to involve a lot of reading: journals, computer terminals, letters, unvoiced dialogue (depending which game). Playthroughs can take between a couple dozen and a couple hundred hours, depending how much the player chooses to chase side quests and explore.
That said, if you ever see them on sale, it would be worth a first-impressions stream or two. (I don't know about PlayStation, but on PC the games regularly go on sale from 3 CAD to 20 CAD, depending how new the game.)

The makers of Fallout have described the setting as the “main character” and it’s a fundamentally bewildering place. While the show throws a lot at the audience (especially the uninitiated) a relatively tight plot keeps it from getting too confusing. It’s remarkably palatable for how far out the story is.

This show is everything I could want from a Fallout TV series. It respects the spirit of the games, the lore of the games and expands on the lore in a respectful manner. Fallout Is quite similar to Warhammer 40k, whether you're introducing new characters or continuing the story of old characters whatever story you decide to tell whether it's a drama or romance what is integral to the core of the franchise is an absurdist dark comedy about the worst of humanity. The world was messed up before the bombs dropped and it just got worse from there and the absurdly amoral world Is a character for you as the player to interact with.
