@@manuricci5654 thank you, it is extremely challenging mentally. I noticed I have been more emotional and depressed, I lost all motivation to play college basketball again and I just want to be able to walk. Was it challenging for you mentally?
Jordan Kaplan Drose, who was good mainly for his athleticism and explosiveness, has suffered an ACL tear along with many meniscus tears. He’s still decent. Kobe, who was one of the most skilled players of our era and still an amazing player at the time, tore his Achilles and became shit. I think it’s obvious when I lay it out like that.
football players come back from ACL tears all the time. Adrian Peterson has had 3 ACL tears I think. These days its not as bad as it used to be. but you do need a lot more spring in basketball than you do football.
I unfortunately had bilateral Achilles tears and came back after 6 months. I think the change comes from the unknown pressure you start to place on the uninjured side. The key to returning is how fast your willing to subject yourself to the PAIN of the rehabilitation.
In Greek mythology, when Achilles was a baby, it was foretold that he would die young. To prevent his death, his mother Thetis took Achilles to the River Styx, which offered powers of invulnerability, and dipped his body into the water. However, as Thetis held Achilles by the heel, his heel was not washed by the magical river. And that's the origin of the Achilles' heel phrase...
It's a common tear but players get back on the field... The hardest one is probably quad tears like rectus femoris, I'm still recovering and it's been 3 years.
Honestly as soon as you said gruesome injury the first thing I thought of was Kevin Ware from Louisville during March Madness. His tibia was sticking out of his leg
nobody gonna mention that after tearing their achilles these players are flopping around like fish or lying around like dead ones while kobe casually stands up, sinks game winning free throws, and walks off without any help?
Jordan Kaplan they were necessary to win the game. he couldnt have possible made "game winning" anything since his achilles gave out before the *very* end of the game
Kevin Durant :'( Sure I talked smack especially after he joined the warriors, but there is no question, the man was a machine! I hope he makes a great recovery.
"Nobody has ever been the same after an achilles injury" Ive been a kd fan since i was a kid and hearing that he had an achilles injury truly breaks my heart. He is the reason why I play basketball and I'm just so sad right now. Seeing what happened to kobe and cousins I dont want kd to be a shell of his old self in whats suppose to be his prime years
Kirby Prudon That’s what l afraid of but l’m hope l’m wrong. Most of the time when someone gets an achilles injury, they never be the same. Kobe, Cousins, and many others. The achilles is just not strong as it was once it’s teared. That’s why l don’t play any sports because of fearing of achilles, acl, and other injuries. Praying for KD for his recovery.
Kirby Prudon there's always hope! Cousins looked pretty good recently & Dominique probably gave him some good tips!! Think like Jordan!? He went from one strength(quickness & leaping ability) to another.... the jump shot improved!!!!
Roberto Masensi You’re just a fucking hitch because you don’t like some of the best teams of all time. And you’re prolly pissed that kd left the bitch ass thunder
For all of you worried about KD... Don’t. First of all the injury is to his non-dominant leg. In basketball you mostly jump off the opposite leg as your dominant hand. If you’re right handed you jump off the left leg, if you’re left handed you jump off your right leg. KD is right handed and nothing happened to his left leg so he’ll still be able to jump the same as before the injury. Dominique tore his achilles on the right leg, also his non-dominant leg. That’s why Dominique came back just as dominant. KD is also not a player that is heavily dependent on his athleticism like a Dominique or LeBron James. He’s more of a finesse player with high level ball handling, and it also helps that he’s a 7 foot player who can shoot over anyone. This helps him tremendously, and will be the reason why he’ll still be as dominant as before. As for Klay Thompson, ACL injuries are not nearly as devastating as they were before. It also helps that he’s primarily a shooter. He should come back just the same as he was before.
In the past school year i’ve sprung my right ankle, fractured my wrist, and busted my nose....I might as well just change my name to Derrick Rose at this point
Radhames Carela yeah when you have a 45+ inch vert there is no injury that can take away your bounce. I mean after the injury he probably still had sthing like 35 inch vert
i was running sprints in one of my first high school football practices. mid 100 yd sprint it felt like someone kicked my heel. looked back, no one was there. then i found i strained my achilles. thankful i didnt tear it
a lot of these were connected to denver. 3 of em were nuggets players, mehmet got hurt in denver, the lakers and nuggets have a bit of a rivalry, the other Isiah plays for Denver
I'm 39 yes old and Dominique was not the same "athlete"when he came back. The year he tore it, he was a MVP frontrunner! What most people don't know is he was a complete scorer' he wasn't just dunks all the time. So other aspects of his game picked up the slack. Don't let stats fool you he was the only good player on that roster. Dominique was also the first athlete to benefit from Surgical advancements that finally figured out how to repair the Achilles tendon. Before Dominique, if you tore your Achilles, you retired! It was over, there wasn't a procedure to fix it yet. Now you'll recover but you won't be the same.
I think the damage done by an Achilles tear is mostly on the player's confidence. After not playing for months or years after a painful injury must make these players afraid to be who they once were.
I tore my achilles april 12th 2017 (i was 18) and there is nothing worse than the noise it makes the pop of it is unforgettable. I didn't get surgery and i still feel the scar tissue to this day. I can run but not the same level of athleticism, cutting isnt the same. and squatting and deadlifting are so much weaker than it was prior to tearing it. Now that it is fully healthy it is just such a mental injury. I don't play sports anymore and if I do its always in the back of my head. I think it takes a long time to get over.
Great video, but just for historical accuracy, the best example of a professional basketball player returning from an Achilles tear was Larry Bird, and it was also the most traumatic; In the fall of 1988, after having a career best 87/88 campaign, Bird began having heal discomfort and soon it became unbearable; X-rays revealed severe bone spurring in BOTH heals. When surgery was really the only option, both of Larry Bird's Achilles tendons were detached and the offending bone spurs were removed. He would miss the entire season, having to wear, large protective boots until the spring of 1989, when he began rehab. By the summer of 1989 Bird was participating in full court games and started the season looking a little rusty, but about two weeks in, he scored 50 against the Atlanta Hawks, who of course had Dominique. Bird's season that year was slightly less in terms of rebounding and he appeared to have lost some lateral movement, but he still averaged 25ppg, 9rbs and 7 assists on 50%. Soon his back would be a bigger problem, but his recovery from a double Achilles injury from bone spurring has to be the most notable in the NBA, but here's why a lot of people didn't know this for years. The Celtics said Bird just had bone spurs...they never said both tendons were detached at the time of the surgery. Wilkins comeback with the L.A. Clippers was short-lived, since by the time 1993/94 rolled around, the " Human highlight film " who's entire game was based on his insane vertical, went downhill from there, very, very quickly. But Larry Bird's was actually the most severe and his comeback was pretty impressive when both were injured.
Dude big ups on the arian foster reference. Dude was an absolute baller. I've never seen a slicker runner, and he wasn't afraid to butt heads with linebackers either. HOF career derailed by (multiple) horrific injuries.
I’m working through an Achilles rupture now. I’m working up to walking unassisted now, 5 months into the injury. Not a tear, a straight rupture. I won’t be able to run until the summer, sprints are a maybe for the rest of my life, I was high level, D1 soccer player, lived and breathed training 24/7. I left college and stopped training, came back in a game for my friend he invited me to and ruptured my Achilles in a very normal run up into a goal kick. My reaction was very similar to Jennings, untold pain, writhing on the ground and screaming. I’ve destroyed my wrist that needed surgery; crushed my collar bone that needed surgery. Neither of those were even close to the pain and severity to my Achilles injury.
I ruptured my Achilles in April, 2018. Full blown rupture -tendon was shedded like spaghetti. I did it playing competitive soccer and it was in training. Personally my experience didn’t hurt when I first did it, probably due to adrenaline and being focused on competing. I agree with a previous comment I seen which said a lot of the pain is due to knowing you’ll need to go through days worth of rehab to even have a chance at normal recovery. The pain itself hurts just as much as a severe leg cramp. But the real pain comes from knowing it is much much worse. It’s just as mental as it is physical with this injury. Trusting yourself to use the muscle is difficult. It’s tricky because if you don’t use it again it won’t recover. Currently I’m looking at a very smooth recovery, and plan to return this upcoming season. But I know for a fact this foot is different now for the rest of my life.
One of the teachers at my school wanted show off to the class that she could jump a hurdle. You probably know where I am going. She ruptured her achilles. ROFL

this made me think back to when i was running ... tried to time myself from my home to the city / town from my house back when i stil lived with my parents ... i dont belive i tore anything but i couldnt walk after i basically collapsed and overstepped and faceplanted ... all i remember was pain and that i basically had to drag myself back home on the ground to get home was to painful to just get up normal ...
I tore mine coming down from a rebound playing basketball 1 year ago. Went with the non sugical healing. Still in recover mode mentally. I tried to race my son's 13 & 10 year's old and they beat me. I was a 4/5 speed guy. The mental recovery is longer.
I remember The Phonse and he had a lot of momentum going into his 3rd year in Denver. After his injury it was a huge downer. I was a big fan of him and that Denver team in the 90's
Dominique Wilkins was a two legged jumper. Go back and look at all of his highlights. That may have helped in his miraculous comeback. All the other Achilles tear victims jumped off one leg most of the time. If you jump off your left leg like most athletes do, your left Achilles will most likely be the one that tears. From what I hear, sometimes there is soreness before the tear. Wesley Matthews definitely had soreness before he tore his.
usually they tear because of a lot of wear and tear from too much exercise and not enough rest, also due to a sudden movement that stretches the ligament, and sometimes, just out of nowhere. i tore mine, worst pain ever. 2 months cast, 4 months rehab. took me a full year just to get over almost 70% mentally. to this day it affects decisions
This guy is talkin truth. Achilles by far...... the worst injury you can have. I told my doc and physical therapy trainer, “I just wanna walk again”. Screw the volleyball career. I can work hard and make money. “I just wanna walk normally again”. Theeeeeennnn my wife and I had two girls and daddy can run and play. That’s the main thing.😂👍🏼
I tore mine some years ago. As long you do all physiotherapy sessions, and workout to get strength back again you'll be fine. No pain, the same explosion... There are 2 reasons why you might not be the same after in my opinion. The first is in your mind, the injured leg will be stronger than ever, but you'll live with a permanent thought that it can happen again with the other leg, so you hold yourself in several moments. The second and the biggest one, you will be out for at least 1 and a half until you be 100% recovered. So, it's too much time for a athlete in higher performance. Even if you haven't any injuries and stop for about 1 year, you will have to work a lot to be back again where you were. So, in my opinion, that's nothing with the injury itself, but your mind.
I’ve ruptured both of my Achilles Tendons, one in 2013 and most recently in 2018. Both of them were from playing sports and both of them have changed me mentally because of how long it takes to come back.
Patrick Ewing played through a partial Ruptured Achilles in the 99 lockout season. Eventually he ruptured it completely after game 2 against the Pacers. I remember watching that game he missed the shot. Patrick was 36 years old at that time, and passed his prime. During that lockout season, almost no one trained to stay on shape.
Here after my own rupture just doing research after playing basketball and tearing mine it a scary feeling and I ain't in the nba it's a loud popped and feels like some one threw a softball and hit you but when you look back there's no one there
i think the biggest factor to a player's comeback after an achilles tear is their play style. you mentioned that dominique was still dunking and just as athletic after his tear, but i read a report where he said it himself that he changed his game. he started playing more on the floor, whereas he use to always attack the rim and use his quickness. he developed more of a consistent jumpshot and 3 point shot. he said that it kind of slowed the game down for him which helped lead to his successful comeback. not really sure how that translates to cousins because he aint the highest flyer, but its all in his mindset. we'll see later on as the season progresses

How bad is an ACL tear
Osama Been Crippin which one is worse
Jordan Kaplan
Drose, who was good mainly for his athleticism and explosiveness, has suffered an ACL tear along with many meniscus tears.
TJB24 really bad.
TJB24 Zach Lavine still got hella bounce after an ACL tear, I believe age is a factor in recovery.
Ruptured my achilles. Its been 8 weeks since surgery, just drove for the first time yesterday.
Ron B good job man how’s your Achilles now? Hoping it’s better?

Diver Cool. Never knew that. Thanks!
Thetis should have done it better
i knew this but i don’t know why she didn’t just dip her fingers in as well
It's a common tear but players get back on the field... The hardest one is probably quad tears like rectus femoris, I'm still recovering and it's been 3 years.
I pray KD makes a full and speedy recovery🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 we need him in the league and he doesn’t deserve this injury

im probably going to jail they were to tie the game not win
Jordan Kaplan they were necessary to win the game. he couldnt have possible made "game winning" anything since his achilles gave out before the *very* end of the game

"Nobody has ever been the same after an achilles injury"
Ive been a kd fan since i was a kid and hearing that he had an achilles injury truly breaks my heart. He is the reason why I play basketball and I'm just so sad right now. Seeing what happened to kobe and cousins I dont want kd to be a shell of his old self in whats suppose to be his prime years
This is 100% on GSW. Fuck them
Kirby Prudon That’s what l afraid of but l’m hope l’m wrong. Most of the time when someone gets an achilles injury, they never be the same. Kobe, Cousins, and many others. The achilles is just not strong as it was once it’s teared. That’s why l don’t play any sports because of fearing of achilles, acl, and other injuries. Praying for KD for his recovery.
Sean Henderson yeah dawh that’s y u don’t play sports u lil bitch
😂
Dominique was absolute athletic freak though. Probably got lucky but I think genetics have a lot to do with it
Radhames Carela yeah when you have a 45+ inch vert there is no injury that can take away your bounce.
I mean after the injury he probably still had sthing like 35 inch vert
i think individual genetics play a bigger fact than age
Rudy Gay came back well
Considering he also had several smaller injuries this season (and I think he may have torn his ACL prior to his Achilles tear) he was outstanding.
The Spurs lowkey had a great offseason
Rohan Prince shell of himself
Rudy still wasn't 💯 throughout the year too. Excited to see him playing at full health

Boss2119 • KP's ACL tear isn't that bad he explained it in his youtube channel
Now you know great Sabonis was.
Hey, I’m 14 yes old!
Man I'd hate for a undersized point guard like Isaiah Thomas to lose athleticism like that.. it would make it hard to be in the league
I started grabbing my Achilles while watching this video😂
Same here
Lol... Same here
It dosen't work just let you know
This gave me chills.
I think the damage done by an Achilles tear is mostly on the player's confidence. After not playing for months or years after a painful injury must make these players afraid to be who they once were.
Durant will come even better, why? He’s great shooter, taller, and light weight body mass
I hope so but I admire your optimism.

Kd brought me here after nba finals game 5! Damnn prayers up for kd
Do ACL next
usually they tear because of a lot of wear and tear from too much exercise and not enough rest, also due to a sudden movement that stretches the ligament, and sometimes, just out of nowhere. i tore mine, worst pain ever.
Kevin Durant: hold my bench
Prayers for a fast recover to KD
Bro have you seen kevin ware his leg just snapped that was soo nasty and it ended his beginning career
You should do some similar video about ACL tears and NBA players involved!

Patrick Ewing played through a partial Ruptured Achilles in the 99 lockout season. Eventually he ruptured it completely after game 2 against the Pacers. I remember watching that game he missed the shot. Patrick was 36 years old at that time, and passed his prime. During that lockout season, almost no one trained to stay on shape.

i think the biggest factor to a player's comeback after an achilles tear is their play style. you mentioned that dominique was still dunking and just as athletic after his tear, but i read a report where he said it himself that he changed his game. he started playing more on the floor, whereas he use to always attack the rim and use his quickness. he developed more of a consistent jumpshot and 3 point shot. he said that it kind of slowed the game down for him which helped lead to his successful comeback. not really sure how that translates to cousins because he aint the highest flyer, but its all in his mindset. we'll see later on as the season progresses
