This list doesn't even scrape how many sub-genres there are : now subgenres have their own subgenres and this is where things keep getting more and more interesting as the years progress

Right idea but some things I would disagree with or add. Old School Hip hop was a very anti-disco movement, sure there are some rappers that rapped over disco beats but most were using breakbeats from Funk music. The old school was making boom bap too, it just sounds different from the more modern boom bap. Where you have Gangsta, it sounds like you are really describing G-Funk or the West Coast sound (or i guess the original west coast sound). There is definitely plenty of gangsta rap over boom bap production and other styles of production. The main thing missing here is the electrofunk/electro-hop tree. That initial electro music led to G-Funk and Miami Bass. Then I would say Miami Bass and Dirty South led into Crunk. Obviously with genres there's no perfect diagram but I think some of these things would paint it more accurately.

Forgot about Conscience/ Alternative rap, Snap music, Miami Base , Trip Hop , Midwest, G- Funk , Rap Rock , Jazz Inspired , Hick Hop , Freestyle and I will also say dubstep or partially reggae / dancehall .

Superrrrrrr helpful for DJ who just starts to dive into HipHop area. Cuz a lot of videos are differentiating subgenres of rapping music by its lyric. I’m not saying they are not helpful, but from a DJ perspective, I’m starting diving into this area by differentiating the type of beats first.

Great video, only flaw I see is how you didn't manage to put in Grime somewhere between Crunk and UK/NYC drill. I know you said you wouldn't include genres outside of the U.S. (and to be fair you did mention Grime a bit in the video) but I think it matters a lot in this context since the production style of modern drill is heavily influenced by it.
I'm not super familiar with Grime as a whole but I debated putting it on there sort of on the outside of the chart since it's from the UK

UK Drill is a mix of Chicago Drill and Grime, and while UK Drill is a subgenre of Hip-Hop, Grime is not. It's closer to the electronic genres first. I appreciate him leaving out Grime because he doesn't know the intricacies. So props to @Kuhl.
Actually Rap started in the late 70s'. Sugar Hill Gang's Rapper's Delight is OLD SCHOOL. If you're going to be a guest in the house of Hip Hop, Learn the shit!

Gangsta rap has nothing to do with the music. It has to do with the lyrics. You can use Boom Bap, G-Funk, Trap and many other beats to make gangsta rap.
And I personally call the music that Mobb Deep does "dark rap" that has some boom bap elements. I don’t know if there is really a name for this subgenre but songs like shook ones part I and part II, Q.U hectic, party over, extortion, get dealt with, eye for a eye and so on sound very dark. Songs like duel of the iron mic, swordsman, 4th chamber (from GZA) also have a dark sound. The roots also have very dark songs like It just don’t stop, episodes, sections and so on
how would u describe the kind of beats millyz uses? a lot of artists use this style (dipset, dave east, mozzy etc) . It's low bpm (I think) but uses like, muted, soulful samples. It kinda illicites an emotional feel. I'm not a producer but I'd describe it as somewhere between boom bap and trap cuz it can have rapid high hats. It's definitely a vibe. Just wondering how you'd classify it. thx

I respect his view on these things and he is a little young so I feel like he would explain some of the older genres a little better if he were around during that time, but anyway, I agree and disagree with a few things lol. I feel like he did a pretty decent job trying to explain and def explained some of the modern genres pretty well but there were a few things that almost made me drop my hot pocket. It’s not a big deal but I think “rap pop” is more commonly recognized as just mainstream hip hop but I agree with the artists he mentioned. I find it weird that he listed (west cost) as it’s own sub genre but not (East coast/ NY). I guess he did when he listed boom bap, but that doesn’t really make it NY hip hop. NY or the (east coast) is crazy lyrical and there’s a lot of lingo that originated in NY hip hop that other people couldn’t understand. It’s the birthplace. There’s a grittiness to NY hip hop. But that can even be broken down more depending on the borough or whatever wave their on. It could be about gettin money and being fly like Dipset and Bad Boy, Fab, etc… or it could be about stick up kids and huggin the block like 50 or Mobb Deep. Griselda best represents NY/Boom Bap music for this generation in my opinion. And he missed backpack and conscious rap. Rapping knowledge and education. There’s a certain message and sound in this type of music. And “West coast” rap can be broken down more since LA artists sound different from Bay Area artists. It’s not just drinking 40s in a low rider, Bay Area got a bounce, they made hyphy. Now a days it’s pretty uptempo with a smooth delivery. Also I almost kicked my dog when he was speaking about (Old School) and used MC Hammer’s dancin ass as an example when there’s so many legends that better represent and fully embody Old School rap. But na I guess Hammer is technically old school but I’d put him in the mainstream genre or (pop rap). “YEAH” by Usher and Lil Jon might be the highest charting crunk song but it doesn’t best represent the genre. That song is actually a sub genre of a sub genre they used to call Crunk & B. For me I think “BIA BIA” or “Throw it Up” run that category, even “Get Low” with Ying Yang Twinz. He forgot reggaeton too. It was huge for years but NORE brought that to the states in the mid 00’s with ppl like Daddy Yankee and Tego, Don Omar etc… it died down a bit for Americans but it’s huge worldwide, you see what Bad Bunny doing. If you got even a little bit Hispanic blood in you you’re gonna play some reggaeton at a family party. Houston has its own style. That was big in the mid 00’s… Chopped and screw. They the reason these kids pour up these days and they don’t even know it. Also I feel like a huge sub category never mentioned is melodic rap. It’s so common these days thanks to ppl like Drake, Nate Dogg and the wavy one Biggavel. Ppl don’t even realize all these rappers today are literally singing on their records. Back then ppl like Akon and T-Pain were considered R&B artists. They would be rappers in todays world. Ja and Nelly were doing that years ago too and ppl were calling them soft lol. Melodic rap might even be a bigger sub genre than trap these days. And another one, idk what to call it but electronic dance rap? Lol idk, It wasn’t exactly pop rap but it was huge around 2010/2015. This comment too damn long nobody reading all this lol. But nah he made some points and that’s cool but I feel like it’s like when ppl talk about Michael Jordan. You can hear about him and watch some highlights but you just had to be there to experience it at that moment in real time to really understand it. Cool video tho it explains enough for anyone unfamiliar.
Sorry if I respond to this 2 months late, but really a great comment. I'm not from USA but I love rap and over the years I listened to almost every album, from the 80s to this days, and I really appreciate when somebody is able to write this type of analysis. Since it seems you're more experienced than me (i'm only 21 years old) and you lived different eras of rap, I have a specific question for you: who do you think is the more influential rapper of all time? Because I think obviously Rakim changed the game, same for rappers like Kanye, Ice Cube and many others, but I also think ATCQ really defined the 90s east coast sound, especially with the type of beats we can hear on The Low End Theory. I don't know if it's my impression but basically every song on that album is like a "type beat" that would've been used after, we have the jazzy loops but also darker beats (like Buggin' Out and Infamous Date Rape) that I think directly inspired groups like Mobb Deep, Wu-Tang etc. I think many people underestimate Q-Tip and Phife influence, sound-wise and rapping-wise, just wanted to know your opinion ✌
And how is west coast a sub genre to crunk? I would say its a rap/hip-hop sub

Gangsta Rap and Boombap should be under the same category as being Old School, because Gangsta Rap was out around the same time as Boombap. The difference is Boombap is Eastcoast and Gangsta Rap is Westcoast. So that chart is pretty wrong of itself. NWA, which is Doc Dre and his crew was out in the late 80's to early 90's. EPMD, LL Cool J. A Tribe Called Quest they're Boombap that was also out in the late 80's to early 90's. So Boombap and Gangsta Rap should be under the same category as Old School.

Great video but there's a mistake Lil Jon didn't start Crunk he popularized it. Crunk existed before Lil Jon and the oldest Crunk song I can lookup is "Three 6 Mafia Gettem Crunk" and this is a song u can see where Trap got their drum style.
And another mistake as u said Trap has alot of subgenre and u said that Drill is like a cousin of Trap well thats because Drill is a Subgenre of Trap

What youre calling the first rap music is already deep into rap history. Old School disco Rap is late-70s to early-80s (and there was even rap music before that), then you got "new school" rap like run dmc in the mid-80s, then theres golden age rap from the late-80s to early-90s which is based mostly on funk samples.

The first years of hip hop were the late 70’s early 80’s. That’s when rap started, not the late 80’s. Think Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five and Curtis Blow. West Coast goes back before Dre and Tupac. Dre was originally apart of NWA along with Ice Cube and Easy E. They were popular in the early 90’s.

Mobb Deep did much dark shit. I call it dark rap although there is not really a name for the subgenre. The roots, Capone N Noreaga, Big L and so on did that too. It was even on some Wu-Tang songs.
