I never thought I'd accept Dutch lessons from a Belgian. You're one of the good ones

Would you say the differences between Flemish and Dutch are more than or less than the differences between British English and American English? I am British but I hear a lot of Americanisms creeping into the language spoken here. Is there a similar tendency between Dutch and Flemish Dutch. Thank you. I enjoyed this video and found it useful.😊😊

Thanks for the feedback and yes this comparison works… In dutch / flemish currently we are using more and more English words in our daily conversations, but the subtle differences between Dutch and Flemish remain…

@@DutchRound1 I see the mass importation of English words as a threat to many languages and cultures.🥺

Coming from South Africa and being Afrikaans and now living in Utrecht (just over a month), I find the Belgium/Flemish accent easier to understand - it just sounds closer to Afrikaans which makes the translation in my head a little easier.
Anyway, thanks for a great series. I really enjoy your videos. It has already helped me in a couple of areas.

You are welcome Nico :)… i ve heard that many times from Afrikaans speaking people… for some reason Flemish is better understood by Afrikaans speakers…

I am an American that studied Dutch in Antwerp and in Ghent and later I learned Afrikaans for 10 years. The dialect of Antwerp seems closest to Afrikaans to me. I learned Afrikaans in OFM Radio's chat room and listening to Radio Sonder Grense on the Internet. For me Afrikaans was easier to learn than Dutch, but the Dutch helped me learn Afrikaans more easily.

I'm a Frenchman who's worked in Brussels for over 20 years, with both French-speaking and Flemish-speaking colleagues (and English was our "official" work language). In the course of years I've informally learned at least some Flemish Dutch. Funnily enough, or logically enough, I can more or less understand the Flemish (provided they don't use too much of a local dialect), but I usually don't get a word when confronted to the Dutch. Now retired I live in the Ardenne in a Frenchs-speaking environment but we also seasonally see lots of both Flemish and Dutch tourists; though not a native Dutch speaker I can quickly tell the difference between them.

Als ik "gij zijt" in Google Translate zet, het zegt het in een Nederlands accent. Dat is een beetje ambetant.
