Who owns a seed store yet pushed people to collect they're own seed? A trustable and honest person, I'll collect some seed yet still but from you every year. Beans are so easy to save seed its awsome. You may let a whole bean plant go to seed though for a nice large fall harvest of cured beans to cook with, love some homemade refried beans.
We own a seed store so we can sell seeds for people to grow, but our core is to help people save money and have a more hands on approach to knowing where their food comes from and knowing the entire cycle of their food. We know some people won't come back, but that is ok with us. We know many more will return because we don't promote a system of dependency and reliance. We appreciate your support and hope you are excited for the 2018 seeds coming in November!
MIgardener A good strong Co op of seed sharing is important to keep the genetics strong!
YESSS! I love Luke's honesty and will to REALLY HELP PEOPLE
the same person who knows most people are too lazy to save their seeds...😆
You don't have to leave them on the plant to dry. You can clip them off and let the pod brown and dry thoroughly as well.
Thank you.
I assume you would clip them when they’re at the point of harvesting then?
@@birdup3257 yes. A plump pod. One that is edible and filled out. If it’s ready to eat, you can pick and dry. unless it’s edy soy beans. Then you would wait longer.
@@dredennis113 wonderful, thank you!
Thought id messed up by picking them thanks
Thank you for all the garden help and all the stuff i grow from you is so good and helps my family so much. Its also educating my kids
I live in SE Michigan, and harvested some green beans for dinner tonight. They are still going strong! Thank you for posting how to harvest the seeds! I have never harvested seeds in the past, but THIS year, I'm going to, thanks to your instructions!
I LOVE your channel!!! :-D
If anyone is looking for a bean to try, I used Landreth the past 2 years. They are a large bush, benefit from some support. But they grew quickly, and produced really heavily. And they also have a decent time of what I would call hang time. From when they start to ripen to the time they are too ripe is probably 10 days. Plus the flavor is excellent.
Thank you Luke I have saved seeds of beans and others. Always have a good crop next year. Those were some really nice bean pods and seeds 😝🐈🐾🐾
Love this! helped me start my bean plants growing more bean plants!
I have tons of collar green pods to save. So happy. I'll be giving a lot to family, friends and neighbors.♥️🌱
I collect a lot of my seed's Thank you Luke love your seed saving video's.
when i clicked on this video, i had a feeling i had a fair idea. after watching it, i was right, but knowing how long to wait is something i learned. thankyou for this, i'll be checking your other videos out for plants i have no clue on.
I almost cried watching this video. Seeing all the leaves falling reminded me of when I was little living in MI. Fall is my favorite time of the year. Love the trees changing colors, apple orchards, etc. We don't get Fall in southern MS 😢.
It's only cool to look at until winter lol
Osem video Luke thanks so much for the tip that well definitely come in handy one of these days
Pretty good video Luke. Cleaning out my gardens today ... found some heirloom green and bush beans that might fit the criteria for seed saving. I will add these to the others I earmarked for saving. Best
great info !! i always try to save as much seeds as possible !! thanks for sharing
Wow- awesome timing!
Thanks man great teaching, God Bless.
Thank you for sharing.
OMG Gleaning project has your video on it !!! I knew that they were a great volunteer program !! I just volunteered to be a home Gardener and long and behold the seeds I am growing are yours !!!
😊Thanks for sharing 😊 Take care.
Thank you so much 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 God bless us all 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽💯💯💯💯💯
I found your info very useful.
AWESOME video man thanks
Thank you Luke!
Glad you enjoyed it Jill!
Nice learn't alot, Thanks
Excellent!
Since I can't manage to 'see' green beans amongst the green leaves and stems, this year I grew purple pole/French beans and had a very nice crop! I did let some of them 'head up' ( is that the right term?) so that I can use those seeds for another crop next year. I love that you have given guidance on how to do this with other crops too. My biggest (?) problem in my small garden is that some of the bean seeds saved for next year will be a mix of bush beans as well as French and Pole beans. If they manage to germinate, it will make for an interesting growing season in my teensy garden! Lol!
The last time I was this early the plants where still looking good :-)
Awesome. Thank you!
Good advice 👍
I save entire pod and leave them in shed. As long as they are dry they will survive extreme temperatures. In my case up to -40. Sometimes I hang entire plant upside down and shell pods in spring for planting.
I wish I'd saved seeds from my first bed of bush beans this year. The second bed I planted barely even germinated. Next year I'll know better, and if something grows and produces like mad - save some seeds! First-year gardener here, so I have a lot to learn. Thanks for all the great information you post! :)
If you got anything your first year then you are way ahead of where I was on my first year. I didn't get yields for the first 3 years I was gardening... That isn't even a joke. So pat yourself on the back! Great job!
Hi, fellow Michigan Gardener here! Tried to follow your advice. Looked inside a few of the more wrinkly pods to find beans sprouting in the pod. Looked inside more. Lots of them were growing roots in the pod. I had to pick some early. Drying them now.
thanks, i'm definitely going to watch the whole seed saving playlist, although i'm noticing a pattern...harvest, leave what you want to go to seed on the plant till it turns brown and or then some, collect, let dry for a few more weeks until fully dry before putting in any sort of sealed container.
Hello I'm a new subscriber. Love your videos
Thanks.
I love beans. My favorite bush bean is a hybrid, so it isn't true to seed, but I save beans from my pole bean.
Luke , my question is the same as a question that was asked 9 months ago. I'm new first time gardener, my mom gave me some peas but i didn't use them all. Can I dry them until they get as brown and sound like yours and save the seeds for next year ??? I have been blessed to save fruit and vegetables for my little family. It has given me alittle life back since the passing of our daughter, due to leukemia. I would be grateful letti
I’m so sorry for the passing of your daughter. May God bless your family.
Red yard long beans are amazing.
beans beans, the favorite food, the more you eat!..........anyways, we got tired of canning beans and I let everything go to seed, going to wait another week and then pull them down. We sit in front of a few evening campfires (Michigan) in October, eat a few hot dogs from the fire, a few marshmellows and we sit and crack the bean pods and gather the seeds. I usually have tons of seeds and don't use them all, but you never know, I'm a prepper.
Love you man. Such great information. Question...how long can I save beans for?
Thanks, MIGardener! My question is how to store my bean seeds and might storing them with diatomaceous earth prevent bugs from destroying the seeds before they can be planted? And could they be finished drying in a dehydrator such as an Excalibur at a very low temperature?
good time to plant and verity of green bean for TX zone 8a? started a raised bed of tomatoes this year. one plant grew quick and producing. picked some ripe ones has about 30+ cherry. didn't cut it back at first. 3 large stems. smaller one started late but hasn't produced. cut back the starts. next projects are Beans and peppers
Hey Luke,
Do you sell seed savings kits?
I've always struggled with a good system to library my seeds.
Very easy :-)
Where I live I have a short season, we get a frost before the seeds have time to dry. So I pick them and dry them inside the house. Air circulation is very important. So an open tray on top of the fridge works well for me
Do you shell them or dry in the pod?
Great video, thanks! Quick question, how big do the seeds need to be? Will smaller ones germinate just as well or will much fatter ones have a better chance of success due to the increased amount of nutrients? Thanks again!
My husband picked all mine today, can I dry them out in the garage?
Beans!..my next season adventure!..I am excited.
Another first I was gifted with seeds for is a spinach..my favorite food, it is named Strawberry spinach. I guess they grow berries as well as green leaves..looks a bit like ivy. Do you know anything about this type?
I hope my seeds are okay. My husband shelled them BEFORE they dried out. I’ve got them drying on a towel in the guest room now.🙏🏻 I pray they’ll survive.
What was the outcome?
Could you do a video on planter layouts please? Eg. What do you think of U shaped planters?
Also, could you cut the whole plant off when the plant starts to dry? And then perhaps hang it up like tomato vines with unripe tomatoes?
Luke i was wondering what time next season should i plant Brussel sproutd
My question for 2020 end of season...Blue Lake Pole beans...left several beautiful straight gorgeous beans on the vine. Now in Seattle area Oct 3 most are yellowed but not dry. Our weather is still decent (60 degrees, cool, overcast) but foggy, marine layer all day. Rain may come any day now. Am I better to pull seed beans before the rain comes? Is the moist foggy weather stopping them from finishing drying? Will they be better off drying off the plant indoors or remaining on the vine in moist environment? Thank you and cheers!
Normally i do well but If we have a cold wet summer like this one. My beens really struggle. PS did you now that you can save your runner been roots to give you a head start and an earlier crop in the second season.
QUESTION - At this stage, are the beans ONLY good for seed starting? Or can they be dried more and used for Bean Soup too? If not, at what stage to you harvest the bean itself for drying and eating months later?
(From personal experience) the beans at this stage are good enough to both plant/save and to eat, just make sure you let them absorb water overnight before cooking and you're golden, they dont get much drier than that, except if you let them on the sun until they "peel"
What are the other 3 in your top 4 for food Luke?
We are expecting our first frost tonight so we picked all the old beans, most not very dry yet. Do we need to bring them inside or will they be fine to freeze before totally dry?
Are those types of dried beans good for cooking as dried beans? Or do you recommend specific type of beans?
What seeds are good to store as freezing them and using them in the following year, two or more?
Washington State usually rains before the seed pod has time to dry
Is there a way to pick and dry indoors?
Hi just 1 question. Can I plant the seed after it dries, or can I file the bean down a little so I can use it in the same growing season? Thanks!!!
I bought the last bag of beans in a 100 mile radios
these are bulk beans for cooking, do you think they will produce the same bean? I was told that they were hybrid trash.
great value black beans
I can tell you have a little one with the "garden in the sky" lol
What if you are growing different types of beans will they cross pollinate ? I’m planning on yellow wax beans and Christmas beans , if I plant them close together will they cross pollinate ?
If I'm a newbie and already took beans out of the pod while they were still green should I just toss them now?
Could you store the seeds in a small paper bag while drying
Do you have to let them over winter in a cold location? Just checking. I would think so.
I live in a humid area in northern California. Will they still dry or is there something else i can do? Can the stalks be cut or do they have to just die because of cold weatger? Thank you
Can I dehydrate my bean seeds? If so what temperature? Thank you.
I grew horticulture beans this year and my pods had black spots but the inside of the dead was beautiful. Are they still safe to eat?
First time I grew beans, I forgot about the plant after the main crop was done, it fired out a few more pods, died off, dried out and the beans it produced were perfect seeds for the following year, all cos I forgot about the plant... :)
Can the hybrid bush bean seeds be saved, or is it just the heirloom green bush beans?
How to you keep a bean seed true to type, ie prevent cross pollination? You might have advised, also, not to save seeds from hybrids.
I have some yard long beans that got very over grown. Can I pick them and let them dry in the house and use the seeds?
So you stop watering the plant? Or just wait til it dies on its own? How do you store them? I read they need refrigeration? Can you collect them after frost?
when do you har
vest seeds
Can you harvest the dry beans after it start's to freeze? Does freezing ruin them?
Do you keep watering the plant while waiting for seeds and pods to dry?
Hey! I hope all is well. I have green string beans, not sure what type, that i bought from a farmers market. They have started to brown, but i didn't want to throw them away. I want to get the seeds out of them. Can i just take them out and replant them? Also, can i take them out and dry the seeds? If so, whats the best way to dry the seeds? THANK YOU to anyone who responds. ☮️❤️
Can you pick the beans and set them somewhere where they can dry out so you can use that spot to grow another vegetable in the spot where the beans were? Or do they have to stay on the plant and dry out?
Great question! I wonder the same.
Will bugs hide in bean seeds and eat them from within? Seems that happened to someone in my family years ago
Ok question. Once you dry the seeds over winter ,will they start growing when you plant them in spring?
yes. and if they are HEIRLOOM plants the next year crop will be exactly what you got this year. If not heirloom, they may not reproduce true to form.
I started harvesting some but the pod wasn’t dried yet. It was still green/yellow. Does that mean they aren’t viable?
I had a pinto bean sprout just under my fridge. I planted it and it produced about 6 pods. I want to use these for seed but already harvested. Help
Can you save seeds from a plant that has been touched by frost?
My library does a seed drop off and or seed exchange. Allows people to help the community.
At some point should they stop being watered? Because my plants won't look like that, until they're hit with the first freeze.
Please help. I harvested my bean seeds but the beans are brown in color. The seed I planted was whiteish in color. Are they still good to use?
Can. I put the seeds in a jar remove the air and use an oxygen absorber and store them or will this destroy them?
I like how he looks like he's in front of a green screen until he pulls out a pod lol
Will they dry anyway if you harvest them off the plant early?
That’s my exact question.
Ok, here’s my question. I planted Burpee’s Stringless Green Pod Bush Beans, the same that I buy every year. But I decided to save them this year, so I’m letting them dry, a few on each plant. I looked on the package and it doesn’t say hybrid anywhere, so I looked on the website and that says, they’re Heirloom. However, I planted white seeds, and my beans that have gone to seed and dried, are dark brown! I can’t find anything online except why are your green beans brown, but my fresh beans weren’t brown. It was actually the best producing and yielding bunch of plants that I’ve ever had. The only thing I can think of is, they must not really be Heirloom? They look beautiful, shiny, and no marks or blemishes at all on the beans, but they’re just dark brown. I’m scared I won’t get the same beans now..lol I did have green and purple, yard long beans, as well, but they were 20 feet away in a separate garden, but they were medium brown seeds. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated, as I planned to share my seeds with others who need them next year. Thanks so much!! 👍🌻🙏🏼
Can I even eat the wax beans when they have developed as beans? /Hanna
What part of Michigan are you in?
Good tips! I wonder can I grow soybeans from soybean seeds sold at the grocery market, which has probably been on the shelf for more than a year? Thank you.
I grew pinto and black beans from grocery store bought this year just to see! And it worked perfectly! I pre-soaked them to see if they would sprout first and most did.
Are you able to use them as a dry bean in a recipe at this point? Like add to a bean soup or something?
Yes you can! :) A 5 bean soup in the winter is something we regularly make!
MIgardener | Simple Organic Gardening & Sustainable Living Any chance Mrs. MIgardener will do a vid on it?
Fenix Yes, this is how beans are typically harvested, when dry. Once cooked the beans become soft like you’d eat them normally
What if you have fresh picked beans (edible) and you just let them dry out?
Yeah....but am I continuing to water, or am I supposed to "help" the plant die off by stopping?
What do you do if you want to eat the peas?
What if the pods are moldy but the beans inside look great?
Do you stop watering the plants so that they can become like this?
