Sony smartphone division putting more effort in Audio, photography, videography giving the user more controls than any other phone.. And even the device have a headphone jack and a sd card slot... They are choices... My opinion is that the manufacturer should not control the buyer, they must provide options and choices...Xperia is doing that and i respect that...

In the wired S22 vs Xperia test at the end I could clearly hear compression and frequency stripping in the S22 audio that wasn't there in the Xperia. The tone of the voice and rhythm guitar on the Xperia was fuller and clearer. I know which one I'd buy.

Also seems like a lot of the focus of the Xperia is on wireless experience. Pretty sure if you bought this phone you are usually using some decent quality Bose, Sony, or other wireless cans. I think even audiophiles probably reserve wired for desk or room speakers (of course not all).

The xperia 1 iv headphone jack is good enough for most low impedance headphones just like its predecessors, It's mostly there for convenience or MIC input. Once you get to the higher volume adjusting there is definitely clipping. Now output through a proper dac/amp through the TYPE C port there are night and day results. The Xperia dsp delivers very good results and can get very very loud for example with some high impedance sennheisers without distortion.

At the moment looking for my aging huawei mate20x replacement, but so far none has found. I did A-b'ing test with hiby r5, samsung note 9 and s22 ultra (pair with dongle like cayin r6, hidizs s9 pro & cxpro). Nothing beats mate20x in terms of overall sounding, especially the sense of sound space. Not that significantly more spacious than others, but i can hear mate20x deliver better listening experience. Its strange as the sound signature output should always follow dongle dac, but somehow it kinda mixed up with phone/dap im using and produce different sounding.

As a mild audiophile I still use an Xperia 5ii and prefer it to my slightly newer Samsung S21 FE 5G for musical duties.
The Xperia jack gets slightly louder by enabling Dolby Atmos but it only plays 16-bit thereafter. Enabling 24-bit audio is a bit anemic for my Audio Technica ATH-M50x but I use a Fiio amplifier to get around and the results are astounding. However, the extra tech reduces mobility while listening.
I recently purchased a pair of KZ ZS10 pro earbuds and now I don't have to turn up the knob to 100% to get eardrum shattering undistorted sound at a relatively cheap price (50 USD). Don't need anything further.
Also find significant improvements using DSEE Ultimate while listening to 60s / 70s music although it drains the battery quite a lot faster.
Would be happy to buy Xperia again but not for over 1400 dollars - the old one cost less than 900 and is going great.

Also, I need a lower volume setting with my 4.4mm cable compared to the 3.5mm cable kit also has a USB c to lightning dongle so I can use it on an iPhone as well-those have but perfect output. It just sounds "different" or doesn´t do anything to my ears.
I have a Xperia 5 III unlocked and running LineageOS and this just sounds beatiful the way it is.
LineageOS obviously comes without any proprietary sony software or features, which i think is a good thing.
It´s even capable of driving my Beyerdynamic DT 1990 pro decently.
These are basically high impedance (250 ohm) studio headphones, so very accurate sound reproduction.
Some mixer_paths.xml tweaks, the headphone output gain is slightly increased and the Hi-Res decoding capabilities are working flawlessly with Poweramp.
Viper4Android covers all my equalizer needs (although i rarely use EQ, i have decent headphones that don´t need tweaking around).

Sony has a history of complying to BS regulations in certain regions. Remember they limited the volume of Walkmans in EU regions, and seem to do the same with Xperia phones. They don't use any dedicated DAC or amp for Xperia phones and the output voltage tends to be low. Teardowns show dual DACs but these are used for the speakers! I've seen some comments claiming the Xperia Z3 still had good sound and that "somehow the dual DACs must be used" but it just sounds like a placebo. I had the Xperia Z5 which was good enough for IEMs but barely loud enough for something like the ATH-MSR7 or M50x. Like your demo comparison here of the 1 IV with the S22 the treble seemed rather peaky at times.

I dont think there is any audiophile using xm4's or any other consumer bluetooth headphone for critical listening. The only thing Audiophiles want for a phone is a powerful enough built in amp to run higher impedance and/or lower sensitivity headphones/iems. The Sony XM4 is super sensitive and low impedance plus it was never designed to be used with an external dac/amp so its a really awful choice for trying to identify the differences between it and another phone since it will realistically sound awful on any dac/amp when in the off state. Also the S22 doesnt have any onboard dac/amp so its pointless using it as an example device without telling us what dongle dac you actually used in the comparison, for all we know that was a $100 dac/amp, or it could have been $5.
You need to take a higher impedence headphone like a HD600 or a Planar with low sensitivity and then compare it to another device with a headphone jack or compare it to a dongle that you name so we can have context for the comparison.
Pretty sure that is a hifiman sundara box sitting in the background there (hard to tell, its quite blurry) that would have made a pretty ideal headphone for testing if thats the case.
Edit: never mind, that isnt a sundara haha

I do really like your content its how I bought my last pair of wireless buds. I just think alternative headphones would have been far more revealing to issues especially when it comes to power. I use an apple dongle when on the go (p6p, no jack) and its completely inadequate for driving my 6XX or Sundara, it just can't produce enough power. If the Mark4 can produce a lot more power, that may make it quite valuable to someone who is in the market for a DAP. for the codec, we mean a difference between each phone with the same codec (as the sbc and aac). let me explain, some brands manage to modify the bit rate of the sbc and aac codecs, to change the the equalizer (it's illegal by the way but some or even many do it). Huawei is the worst example, their sbc codec has a lower bitrate, it has equalization which makes the sound ugly... and the hua Huawei don't have aptx or ldac... the only saving codec is THEIR codec (ldhc), you see the principle? we destroy the basic codecs, we block access to audiophile codecs and we force the m highlighting our codec otherwise impossible to have good sound quality with your phone. honor and Huawei that's it, I know that Vivo also did that but there I don't know if they continue. Oppo they were suspected by audiophiles but I don't know, never tested (even if they also use their Huawei codec... So many doubts) except that they allow aptx and ldac them. The m Best student in this story is Xiaomi, which does not change anything, even on its redmi. They respect all codecs (except their own... Because their proprietary codec is just a huge bug Embulant, only crashes, only cuts, the 144kbps sounds like 16, the 909 kbps sounds very bad and full of cuts...) The adaptive aptx sounds better and much more stable. Samsung on the other hand I Know that their Galaxy are irreproachable but not necessarily their A range... They have fun changing the one ui interface (for the A range it's the simplified version, the mid-range version of one Ui) then probable that they touched with the SBC, especially that they have the jack which besides is not very very good.

Not sure about Huawei and what the SBC bitpool is but Samsung does the same thing, they set a bitpool value of 37 on all Galaxy Buds lineup which made it practically unusuable for music listening on Windows 10 or older, the only saving grace was when Windows 11 introduced AAC. Most standard Bluetooth devices have bitpool 53 which isn't perfect but decent enough for some music listening (a bit less detailed than AAC and bass tends to be more boomy)

I've had the Xperia 1 IV since 16th June. On paper, the specs suggest an audiophile phone BUT... you cannot get reasonably loud volume (emphasis on reasonably) from this phone, streaming or (especially) via the jack. As such, regardless of the codecs / hi-res capability the audio experience is so underwhelming as to be frustrating. Music is rendered as a thin, anaemic facsimile of itself.

No offense but why are you listening to the Sony xm4? They are below average in sound (terrible Imo). So many better options (like sennheiser momentum 3, etc). The tuning is plain wrong, and the eq cant fix the part of frequency that needs fixing. Too much mid bass, subpar resolution, etc.
Sony needs either a 10 band eq or a parametric eq. And it's bass boost is outdated. Everyone knows you center the bass boost closer to 40-50Hz with a gradual rise starting from 90Hz or 100Hz. Sony still doing the 70-80Hz bass boost.

As a professional bass player in past, I would recommend going with bass frequencies from 100 Hz like jazz music it is recorded, which will lead to a clearer bass and its notes articulation, and also will provide freedom for other instruments in the song mix. Actually, the human ear isn't able to hear sound up to 100 Hz clearly enough to understand what notes are happening there.
