  • If your vats is causing the car to not start, replacing the ignition cylinder as I did isn’t necessary. It took researching my problem to understand I only needed to bypass the vats to fix the problem and turn off the security light. Just putting resistors on the connector will bypass the vats fixing the problem.
If you don’t want to cut the wire to your ignition to put resistors on it, you can go to a junk yard and cut one off a car there or order a cheap ignition cylinder from amazon or rockauto.com Cut that wire and use it without cutting the wire to the already installed ignition cylinder.
I used a multimeter to measure the resistance of the resistor of the key. It measure 6 ohms. I used 3, 2k ohm resistors. I soldered them to the wire the wire from my old ignition cylinder. I used heat shrink to cover the wires.
To program a new key without the resistor, put in the key and turn it on. Leave it on for 10 minutes. Turn the key off for 10 seconds. Repeat this 3 times. A total of 30 minutes and 30 seconds. After the 3rd time, turn the key and it should start. My car did.
The top cover on the steering column has a security bolt that looks like a torx bit. A 4mm socket will remove it. The bottom cover has 2 torx screws.

I have an 02 Century as my main vehicle now and worked for GM as a tech for a number of years. The thing that happened most with those old VATS systems (with the chip in the key) is from starting the vehicle over and over eventually causes the little wires on the end of the lock cylinder to break. Knowing MY luck, I will be in the middle of the Mojave desert when the wire will give out. I had an idea exactly the same as you where I would have the resistor all ready to go instead of removing the air bag, steering wheel, column covers, etc. to replace the cylinder. BTW...the new cylinder comes with a brass blank where you have to give the dealer your old key to enable them to use a VATS interrogator that will read the key code 1-12. Once they have that, they can sell you the key that comes w the right resistance which will handshake w the VATS system and cut the grooves into the key matching the ones on the blank. WAY cheaper just to solder in a resistor. Hey....who's gonna steal an 02 Century nowadays?

I have replaced resistors to make it illuminate again. Even though I replaced the resistors, at times it's very dim. Sometimes it's really bright. It is visible at least. The It's a bad design by GM.

How can I get the switch to turn to get the to get the cylinder out

Putting a a small allen wrench or screw driver in that hole, turn the key and pull the ingnition cylinder. When putting in the screw driver or allen wrench, i believe you can feel it push something as you pull the cylinder out.

What if u don't have the key

Locksmith could make a key. Possibly removing parts under the ignition cylinder might remove it.

The "30 minute" programming procedure garbage lol. I hate it so much.
