When Nile says DD are his second band I get a lump in my throat and I tear up a little bit. What an honour!
I'm from Texas from the late 70s early 80s. That's the music I grew up on. I am very proud that I was the only one in my circles that took Duran Duran seriously from the very first record. It took years for everybody else to come around and realize what a great band they are. But I'm satisfied that I knew it from the very first record. I kept trying to turn everybody on to them and they resisted. But now those same guys take them seriously. I now have the right and the power to say I told you so.
Yet another classic album. . cant believe yet again the radio never plugged Pressure off, its sad that the general public arnt getting to hear these songs. was the same as the last album All you need is now and Girl panic, Duran Duran were and still are the greatest band in the world. What really pisses me off is when the press say 80s supergroup, ...how about just Supergroup, as there as good now as they ever were,
I can't believe the number of people posting ridiculous comments such as "why are they working with other people?" (did you actually watch the video?) and the one that really highlights a serious lack of intelligence "wish they would use real bass/drums" - so they're imaginary are they? Every piece of bass or drumwork on the album was played by either Roger or John using a variety of different types of instrument. Roger used the Roland TD-30KV electronic kit for the variety of sounds that it gives (as lets face it apart from some minor tweaking of skin tension you're only getting one set of sounds out of an accoustic kit and after 37 years in the business I'd find it limiting too) but he played all of them himself and John used one of Nick's original Moog synthesisers for some of the basslines but he still played all of them himself. You have a group of people who all have different musical tastes (Roger is a DJ and likes dance music, Simon likes rap etc.) and where they meet creates some of my favourite music but I'm not limited to just one style or type. So if you want to listen to a rock track put on 'Shadows on your Side' or 'Last Day on Earth' and if you want to listen to some funk then take your pick from the Notorious album but stop criticising musical diversity. If you don't like it move on to something else! Duran Duran are on their own musical journey making music that inspires and challenges them and no-one else. The great thing is that you are free to jump on that 'train ride' when you like and back off when it's not for you and as Nick has pointed out that's how people who are not close -minded tend to listen to music these days, jumping from genre to genre which for a group of people with diverse musical tastes is just fine.
Couldn't have put it better myself Philip. Duran is patchwork of various themes. I feel there's something for everyone in Paper Gods, as there was in All You Need Is Now, and RCM before it.

I love these behind the scenes clips! Some bands promote right before the albums release, then tour and disappear into the night and you wonder if they're even alive after years of silence. But not Duran Duran, they invite you in, let you sit a spell and welcome you back anytime! Nice Job - keep it up!
Man do I love these guys. Duran Duran are my lifelong romance and soundtrack and savior heartsong band. they've inspired me in my lowest and highest times. I just love how they ooze music in such a beautiful, exciting, heartful way into the world. When they are having fun ... WE all are having fun. Duran are the best to me ....
To quote Philip McFarlane below: "Duran Duran are on their own musical journey making music that inspires and challenges them and no-one else." And if a fan doesn't understand this then they have no appreciation of what has kept this band going for the last 37+ yrs. Heck, can't people just be grateful they are still alive, healthy and giving us new music and are one of those rare bands that actually loves to play live and tour their albums globally for 2+ years! As fans we are so damn lucky that OUR BAND can still do this.
I've been a Duranie now 40 yrs plus since 1981 fantastic brilliant awesome amazing band 👌👌 still era and still luv um there music is outstanding 👌👍

Speaking as a LONG time Duran Duran fan, I love this album and love that they keep their sound fresh and current and timeless. I listen to all types of music and I would rank their music right up there with ANYBODY currently making new music. Please give it a listen, you won't be sorry :)

Duran Duran is an unique group. I love their songs since a single Notorious and American science. They are so incredible persons. Simon has so unique and stunning voice. He is so harismatic and fantastic singer in the world.

I love DD but sadly this is my least favourite album from them, I love the title track and a couple of others but it just doesn’t gel with me. Looking forward to the next one!

Duran Duran.... please PLEASE go back to your roots!! Hint: Duran Duran self-titled, Rio and Seven and The Ragged Tiger. Don't try to be too modern. Stay unique and new wave/rock please. Today's sound is crap. Keep away from mediocre Electronic music. And please... bring Andy or Warren back.
And no, I am not an old gal... but I was a lil one who grew up listening to you throughout the 80s and 90s.... stick to your Unique edgy sound and rich poetic lyrics!
The reason DD are still alive because of not staying to their roots .They never repeat their albums cuz it sounds boring they are big risk takers which not too many bands can do .I don`t wanna hear another hungry like the wolf or ordinary world im done with that its time for something new and refreshing thats what keeps the band going.
they are being true to who they are and also trying new things its not so different that its bad this album is funky i love Pressure Off especially
ordinary world is their masterpiece. they would have been gone and forgotten if it wasnt for ordinary world. that's the song that make them well known cross generation and it is the song that will last forever
One-piece Fortest That song is a masterpiece but it doesn’t lessen the value of all of their other songs. There are tons of excellent songs on that album and all of their albums. A song doesn’t have to be a hit to be a great song.
Sorry,but it is a true.When all of you be able to listen paper gods,unfortunatelly you will hear something else,not Duran Duran.John and Roger play only in small fragments,Simon is great,but songs are preety much empty and lost in some strange dimension.Here is my opinion :
1.paper gods 4/10,boring,monotony,
church sound and influence;
2.LNITS 5/10,have a vibre,good,modern,nothing special;
3.YKMWS 5/10,strong and dark music,too much Nick,great lyric,similar but not even close to the shauffeur;
4.Pressure off 6/10,catchy,hooky,bad lyric,just a bad copy of "get lucky";
5.Face for today 5/10,i really do not know what is this,totaly confuse,song has everything and nothing,there is no John and Roger,Simon great again,Nick is again in every second;
6.Danceophobia 5/10,interesting,something new and modern,great chorus,Lindsy ok,Simon great,John and Roger are on vacation again,not bad but something miss;
7.WATC 8/10,probablly the Best song,great lyric, great guitar,great Simon,100%Duran Duran song,close to their Best work
8.Sunset garage 3/10,just another song,like a joke,average,again "oh,oh"concept of song,cars,garage...
9.CTS 3/10,totaly missed everything,chorus has no any conection with song,again church influence in chorus,sorry but this is really bad;
10.Butterfly girl 6/10,Simon is great,some nice and very bad sound of guitar,women vocal is interesting and strong,but nothing else,average again;
11.Only in Dreams 6/10,nice melody,Simon is great,"my heart is screams only in Dreams",solid lyric,good guitar,finally you can hear John and Roger are on this album,and than again Nick destroyed everything with some ugly music fragment;
12.The universe... 4/10,litlle psihodelic song,like a start of some horor movie,spookie,strange,some violine for the end of the album.
At the end,i must tell you,i didn't except songs like "rio", "a view to a kill"...,but this is just bad,i m disapointed.But,i will still be a huge fan,like last 32 years,i m groove up with you guys,and I will live and die with Duran Duran.Best regards from Serbia.See you again on Egzit NOVI SAD.
+Branislav Đurić I can see a lot of people being less than bowled over by the album, but love it or hate it, it's something new- both in the sense that it's new music by DD and that they've gone with a new sound for most of the album, and that's worthy of respect, especially with their legacy and how easy it would be for them to just rehash the old sound. I don't love Paper Gods, but it is growing on me.
+Branislav Đurić John, and Roger are everywhere on this album. Roger uses electric drum kit in parts of the album, but all of it is all live drum playing. Not a "drum machine" on the album. I hear John's bass throughout the album, he also is running his bass through some electric effect as times as well, like on "Change The Skyline" (yuk). Other than that, I did a similar review just now. I was harsher on the weaker songs but more generous on the better ones. Not sure I agree with the whole EDM direction they seem to have taken.
i have just hear the whole album.My opinion 4/10.I am fan for 31years,this is not Duran Duran,this is just bar experiment.I do not like,this is everything worst than medazaland,believe me.

+Branislav Đurić I absolutely love "what are the chances" that is absolutely DD at their best and one of the best songs they've made in maybe 20 years. The other songs they've released so far are a bit 'meh!' especially "last night in the city' that's plain awful :-D
+Branislav Đurić Yeah the album is pretty bad..I've been a fan since the beginning & the only problems I've ever had with them is with the production (Or over production) on a lot of their albums.. never the song writing..but this thing will be polarizing....its a mess of awful.. I've only heard the base album there are another 5 or six bonus tracks I have my fingers crossed for.
medazzaland is one of the Best dd albums...very experimental very brave with very good songs
