Fantastic video, Frank, thank you. The 80% barley you mention is actually a bit less if we talk about the Versele depure mix which contains less than 50% barley. I would add that another advantage of sending light birds is that during the multiple birds of prey attacks they get, they will be less chosen from the flock, the agility depending a lot on body weight. Being a falcon I guess you'd prefer a slower bird easier to catch and with more meat to eat. 😆
Hey Frank, thanks for the great lesson! Not to beat a dead horse, but I am a stickler for math, and am about to purchase a bunch of barley to mix my feed. The Versele-Laga website says that Depure has 24% barley, and you were talking 80% barley. I was thinking I would mix 20% Versele Laga Classic with 80% pure Barley grain, and use that as my race mix. What do you think? (It is really hard to get a premix depurative here in Memphis!!!)

You can mix your own grain or use the Depurative. If I can get great barley I mix my own if not I can feed Depure from Versele Laga. Either works super.
Handle your team when they return from a six hour flight. That is how they should feel when they go to the race. Light and buoyant with no bulk or roundness. Not heavy at all but you can feel the muscle but not big and full muscle.
Thanks again Frank, great video. We used to get Versele-laga feed here in Hawaii. Wanted to use feed helps prevent muscle burn out. Can I use another brand of Dupree. And on return days use 16% protein mix … in place of VL brand … Thanks, again Tony
I like 80% barley and 20% breeding mix. I have not been able to get barley and I am feeding Depure from Versele Laga. Low protein and low fat. See my pinned comment at the top of the page.
@@FrankMcLaughlinPigeons awesome , thanks for the reply. I know you prob don’t want to give away too many of your secrets but I’m curious to know how much u feed per bird per day ? Are they restricted to .75 of an ounce or can they eat as much as they want of the light mix once per day? Thanks again Frank 😊
I am going to try to figure how much I feed this old bird season. I will measure and see exactly what I do. I feed more instinctively and then adjust with their body weight. You can feed until they leave a little tiny bit of barley once per day or until a bird goes to water and that will be okay.
I have a small loft 10X6 separated in two sections. I do t have the luxury to have a separate loft for racers. One for breeders. One for young birds. If I feed your system young birds will come weak underdeveloped. But if I feed without barley I can’t compete. What mix you would advise in my case? Or I must build another loft and feed differently racers and breeders? Thank you for your high quality informative videos!
I am sorry to say that you cannot feed like me if they old birds are raising babies during racing. You must feed plenty of good rich feed so the babies will not be stunted. If I had one section I would leave all the feed they want in front of the pigeons at all times. They do not eat as much when they have all they want. If you do not have hawk problems leave the loft open so the birds can go in and out all day long for exercise. You can fly well like this.
@@FrankMcLaughlinPigeons I’m in Staten Island, NY. Hawks are problem. Usually they are prevalent from October to March. During summer time I find very rare hawk attack. And I don’t lose any bird. But winter time it’s tough time dealing with hawks. Most likely breeders I’ll keep in a separate section and racers in the other section. So I can feed accordingly birds in each section too. Thank you for your opinion. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
If you have Depure from Versela Laga use the Depure but watch my feeding videos and feed the measured amount. ruclips.net/video/euD2T2MsNGk/видео.html ruclips.net/video/NECMz1MuabM/видео.html
nice video again . I do agree that feeding make difference, it could vary from hot to moderate weather region. but with the passage of time I found that we have quite good and precise nutrition available . those supplements have research based nutrition that our pigeon as an athlete needs, we may not able to maintain those essentials nutrition with feeding only. Now as we have supplements, nothing more left with except to control weight :) in past we cared about carb, fat protein etc ,but now those are in bottle :)
I do supplement my birds with plenty of minerals and also use this system during the week. Minerals are most important and I use this stuff. ruclips.net/video/aLjysaQflgM/видео.html
Good morning Dr Thank you for all your information I will try your system this week and I will let you know how it's will go the result but I have problem with feeding & training on the loft day per day please I have one question for you and please and I want you to 1 ) because I want to know how many grams of feeding I should give to my pigeons every day from the day of arriving until day of the basket, 2 )and how long time io should training my pigeons on the loft from the day of arrival until the day of basket 3) and if it's good to make the male and female meet on the day of basket I thinking lots for your help and your kindness
No need to have the males and females meet the day of shipping. That will not help and only hurt. If they mix after the races that is Okay. I race them on Saturday, train 35 miles on Tuesday and maybe 50 to 70 miles on Thursday. That is it. Email me and I will send you a simplified feeding system you can follow. Frank@McLaughlinLofts.com
I have not been able to get any decent barley this year. It has been sold out so I have been feeding the Depure from Versele Laga and not mixing my own this season.
Hi Frank I love your videos just come back into to sport after a ten year break. I am going to concentrate on the celibate system with your feeding methods. But would like to ask what feeding method do you condon on young birds racing
I will do a video on feeding the young. I really feed them almost exactly the same way and start about a week before the race season. No need to keep them on the barley mix too early. I will give the babies more grain if they have a longer workout. Only because they are young.
Hi Jon, I know some of the breweries sell a barley that was already soaked in sugar water before they make the beer. If this malt barley is just barley and nothing added it should be fine. I had a friend buying from a brewery and his birds were so fat. That barley although it looked the same was presoaked in sugar.
I start the light mix about a week or two before the race season. It is only used during the racing. The rest of the time the pigeons have plenty to eat. During molting they must have plenty and very rich feed to grow the new feathers.
@@FrankMcLaughlinPigeons Hello Frank, I have a question about the nutrition program for speed and medium distance competitions. Can it be followed in Morocco? You should know that the season for speed, medium and long distance races has a different date. We usually start the season in January and end in April or May. You know what the weather is like in this Months: Is it possible to follow your method or add some other grains to the mixture?
Hello again frank. Here in philippines. We basket the birds on friday, saturday they will eat on truck and sunday is our release or race day. What day can you recommend to do the 35 miles train on your tuesday and your 50 to 70 miles on thursday if our race day is sunday? Thank you frank😊
thank you for your honest advices .. can you sir tel us what are the meaning of speed distances 100 km to 240 km? and what is te rigt wauy to feed for middle distances we are now playing midlle distances and hope that you advice us for the right way to feed for middle distances thank you sir we apreciate a lot your help ..
Good honest video. Would you feed young birds on this system and if so how long before the first race would you start on the depurative mix Thanks 🏴
For old birds I put them on the barley mix several weeks before the first race to get the body weight down before training. I do not loft fly the old birds before I start training so I must make sure they are light and buoyant. For the young birds I have them on 50% barley when I want them to start exercising around the loft and keep them on 50% barley during training. I move to 80% barley about 10 days before the first young bird race.
Great video thanks Wanted to ask how would you adjust feed for longer races up to 900km (560 miles) We start in May and looking forward to the new season
I will be doing a Part 2 on Feeding for Long Distance and then Part 3 on Feeding young birds. I will make Part 2 in about a week. Plan to do a Live Stream on Sunday.
@@FrankMcLaughlinPigeons Great news, Frank. Looking forward to watching the long distance edition. It is a dangerous border between being light to race well and being too light and running out of fuel(fat) and drop on the fields.
Hi Frank 2 questions is this for young birds also ? and second question is when do you start putting the birds on the depurative mix for the 6 days before racing starts ?
I do feed like this for the young birds. I usually have the young on 30% barley through training and about a week before the first race I put them on the barley mix and treat them like the old birds. If they young have a long training toss of a big workout I will add more grain for that feeding and then back to the barley mix. The young are growing some but not molting much during racing so you can feed the same as the old birds. I put the old birds on the mix maybe two weeks before the season starts and the young about one week before the season starts.
Good day sir frank, you mentioned you train them tuesday and thursday, in these days fo you still feed light? can they recover from that workout with that feed?
I still feed light. The training is not long. If they fly more than 90 minutes I will add more rich feed to the mix. I only train two times per week so they will be fine.
Hi Frank great video, couple of questions they get fed once a day do they only get out once a day ie a toss or loft fly and what ration of food would you start with as a base amounts for cocks an hens before adjusting the amounts, thanks from Scotland
I only exercise two times per week between races and usually feed in the morning or after the exercise. I usually feed 100% barley for a couple weeks before I start the road training to bring the weight down. They do not get too much each day. I do not loft fly before training and just start them close to home and inch them out to maybe 30 miles before the first race. Once training starts they are on the barley mix.
Hi Frank great video I'm new to the sports. just got few questions. I have some Yb's birds. I want to start racing by next year what should I be feeding my Y'Bs to get them started with your feeding system? what age should I start training them ? right now they just fly around my loft. Any advice /help greatly appreciated
Welcome to the sport. You should mix in about 30% barley to your feed mix for the young and feed plenty. They are growing and molting and need the feed. By adding 30% barley they will exercise readily. Load them up with feed until the leave feed each day. Once racing starts you can move to feeding like I spoke about in the Old Bird Short Distance racing. Once your young pigeons are flying strong around the loft maybe exercising for 30 minutes or more it is time to start training. Start slow and pick nice days. There is no rush. See my Educating Young Bird Video.
@@FrankMcLaughlinPigeons I feed them once a day is that good enough? what feed mix would you recommend? I'm using the winner cup mix right now, as of barley where is the place I can get it? its hard for me to get one were I'm at.
Once a day is best or you will over feed. Not sure about where you can find the barley. Where are you located? Most grain dealers can order good barley.
I am not sure what your question is? Watch all my feeding videos here. ruclips.net/p/PLfjpm1Kc9E0UkXcdnfTrnV_VKTkfNozbt Email me and I can send you a simple feeding program. Frank@McLaughlinLofts.com
Hi, thank you for your videos. Your simplified approach of racing pigeons actually makes a HUGE DIFFERENCE. And i would like to ask, How much grams r u feeding ur racing pigeons per day?
I suggest feeding until they leave a handful of barley. If you are not training the pigeons very much. See this video on my measurements: ruclips.net/video/euD2T2MsNGk/видео.html
Hello again Frank!! I'm lost about you saying that when you feed twice daily, you are over feeding...is it not how much you feed and not how frequently? Please clear my head..thanks
It certainly is how much you feed. If you fed a measured amount and divided that in two the birds would act so hungry most would feed more and over feed. Fanciers that feed in the morning until the birds are about full usually feed the same again that day. Nearly double what is really needed. Much easier to feed a set amount once a day. Feed until they slow down go to water or start to leave barley and that is all they get until the next day.
For old birds I put them on the barley mix several weeks before the first race to get the body weight down before training. I do not loft fly the old birds before I start training so I must make sure they are light and buoyant. I train the old birds for maybe two weeks before the first race and get them out maybe 40 miles. For the young birds I have them on 50% barley when I want them to start exercising around the loft and keep them on 50% barley during training. I move to 80% barley about 10 days before the first young bird race.
You can feed until they leave a few pieces of barley and feed only once a day. My birds tend to clean this up fairly fast but I have been doing this for years. Better to feed until they leave a bit of barley and stop.
Good day Frank!! Why do you use de chlorinizer? Or whatever it's called...what effects do we get if ever the water is moderately or heavily chlorinated?
I think the dechlorinator removes the chlorine or at least enough of the chlorine so it does not kill the friendly bacteria, ruclips.net/video/aLjysaQflgM/видео.html
Hii frank great video.. I'm from India im gonna follow this process but the thing is what amount of feed does i must feed per pigeon i mean how many grams of feed for a single pigeon?? thank you
It is best to feed until they leave a handful of Barley. 75% barley or paddy rice will work with 25% grain mix. If you measure the feed you cannot work the pigeons very much between races. See this video. ruclips.net/video/euD2T2MsNGk/видео.html
Hi Frank ! pretty new pigeon racing and wanting some advice ,your way system makes so much sense , but let’s say i’m feeding 80% barley and 20% breeder do i still follow a the measurement of 1oz. max per bird ? or till they leave barley ? thanks !
If you are new please feed once a day until they leave a small handful of barley. You cannot make a mistake on feeding if you feed the race team once a day until they leave a few bits of barley.
The derby starts at 250kms and ends at 600kms. What is the routine of 80%barley&20% breeder mix and how many days should they rest before training toss?
If you are basketing at that time feed as early in the day as possible. I suggest if you are able to also feed a very small amount about 12 noon so they may drink a little more water.
Hi Tia, I have my grain delivered from Global Pigeon Supplies out of New York. They carry all kinds of feed along with all the minerals I use. Many supply houses sell a nice depurative that should be super to race on. Happy you liked the video!
Hello Frank .I will race this year for my first time our races are every week we ship on Friday and they start from 130 miles all way to 400 miles , I saw your videos but I’m not sure for long or short distances , can you tell me how many days should I feed 80%barley please.
Do you have to ship the same birds each week? They can fly weekly through 300 miles but you may want to give some birds a week off before the 400. Feed like this for 100 to 300 miles and see my long distance feeding for the 400. Email me and I will send you the system. Frank@McLaughlinLofts.com
Thank you Sir for your information. I'm new in pigeon racing just started. I understand every word you said. My only concern how much do you feed per bird? Let's I have 16 birds to learn and understand the sport. I think that is important to me as a new comer.
In south africa where I live we don't have versele laga.. Can I use any depuritive mix.. And barley.. And do I only feed them depuritive mix and barley
At weaning I give all the rich feeds the babies want. Usually mix Versele Laga Champion and Versele Laga Energy. You want them to pick through and eat all the small seeds they want. You never want to stress them by not giving them free choice and let them have what they want. I will put a cheap Tractor Supply Chicken Vitamin and Electrolyte in the water a few days a week right at weaning time. I make this very weak because this Chicken Vitamin is so strong. Plenty of grits and minerals again you want to keep them from getting stressed.
Some clarity please...the Versele Laga Depurative "traditional" has 32% barley. You mention "80% barley mix" over and over and then near the end you mention 100% barley (for a different reason, I know). My question is, in the Versele Laga "mix" you use, what is the barley percentage? Thanks for the vids!!
Hello Frank, I am sorry for the confusion. This year I mixed my own feed with 75% barley and 25% Champion Mix. You want to keep the protein and fat content down and the Depure does that. They do not send Depure to the USA anymore so I just mix my own for low fat low protein feed using 75% barley. You can go 80% barley also. You will not believe how they birds feel and perform.
Hi good day.. if you are feeding your pigeon once a day. How much do you feed per pigeon?and how often you let them go outside or loft fly? Thanks in advance😊
If you are going to loft fly you can feed once a day until they start to leave a few pieces of barley. They will loft fly if you feed like this. I usually do not loft fly the old birds so I keep them a little hungry.
@@FrankMcLaughlinPigeons thanks so much air for your reply..so until they leave some of the barley i will feed them..is 80% barley 20% depurative can be used as well with young birds?
Feed 80% barley with 20 breeding mix or depurative. You may be able to buy a good depurative and you will not have to mix your own. I feed the young birds that same way and start the 80% barley a week or so before the first race.
Check out this video here for the measurements but you cannot work them hard feeding like this, and then the playlist below. ruclips.net/video/euD2T2MsNGk/видео.html ruclips.net/p/PLfjpm1Kc9E0UkXcdnfTrnV_VKTkfNozbt
Why barley, what is it about barley that makes it so desirable? Wheat has a greater concentration of most of the vitamins and minerals than barley. So why barley and not wheat? Thank you for the advice.
Hello Karl, If you can get wheat in the husk it would probably be Okay. The birds tend not to overeat barley. It is about their least favorite grain. I know Barley works and I am not sure about wheat.
Tell me something I've searched the benefits of barley and it's funny pipa said barley isn't that good and corn is better. Now I value your opinion as it makes sense but can you elaborate regarding the use of corn. Also the Vesa laga depuritive is it that you recommend adding barley to the 32 percent or use as is.
Hi Kevin, I would have to see the article about corn although in Europe corn is any mixed grain and maize is what we call corn in the USA. The depurative from Versele laga is high fiber, low fat, low protein mix which is very good and does have a high percentage of barley. If you mix your own feed you can get a higher percentage of barley that is also low fat, low protein high fiber. There are many ways to success but if you want to condition birds without much effort, barley plays a big part. Give me barley and safflower and I could race on these two grains only. Best two grains available.
Much appreciated the feed mainly available in my homeland is garvo breeding and racing, the question I asked mainly is that if I was to to the math and feed or add 80percent barley is the maze in the feed a issue or should I try getting my hands on the depuritive mix and stick with that.much appreciated
@@FrankMcLaughlinPigeons I was going really good with the barley mixes but atm the isn't any in my country atm I have access to versa laga energy mix can I use this

You are too nice. I will have two more parts, Long Distance and Young Birds.
@@FrankMcLaughlinPigeons awesome . Thanks so much frank ☺️
Excellent 👍🏼👍🏼
So happy you like this.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

nice video again .

Good morning Dr
Thank you for all your information I will try your system this week and I will let you know how it's will go the result but I have problem with feeding & training on the loft day per day please I have one question for you and please and I want you to
1 ) because I want to know how many grams of feeding I should give to my pigeons every day from the day of arriving until day of the basket,
2 )and how long time io should training my pigeons on the loft from the day of arrival until the day of basket
3) and if it's good to make the male and female meet on the day of basket
I thinking lots for your help and your kindness
No need to have the males and females meet the day of shipping. That will not help and only hurt. If they mix after the races that is Okay. I race them on Saturday, train 35 miles on Tuesday and maybe 50 to 70 miles on Thursday. That is it. Email me and I will send you a simplified feeding system you can follow. Frank@McLaughlinLofts.com
Good night Mr Mclaughlin if its possible you can show a picture of the 80% barly would be greatly appreciated.
I have not been able to get any decent barley this year. It has been sold out so I have been feeding the Depure from Versele Laga and not mixing my own this season.
@@FrankMcLaughlinPigeons ok thanks alot
Hi Frank I love your videos just come back into to sport after a ten year break. I am going to concentrate on the celibate system
with your feeding methods. But
would like to ask what feeding method do you condon on young birds racing
I will do a video on feeding the young. I really feed them almost exactly the same way and start about a week before the race season. No need to keep them on the barley mix too early. I will give the babies more grain if they have a longer workout. Only because they are young.
Hi Frank,
Great video as always. Is malt barley the same as barley in the hull? Most of the feed mills around me sell malt barley.
Hi Jon, I know some of the breweries sell a barley that was already soaked in sugar water before they make the beer. If this malt barley is just barley and nothing added it should be fine. I had a friend buying from a brewery and his birds were so fat. That barley although it looked the same was presoaked in sugar.
Great video and info Frankie! Thanks, and keep 'em coming. 🙂
So happy you liked the video. More to come.
Is the light mix for the whole year round or only during the racing time?
I start the light mix about a week or two before the race season. It is only used during the racing. The rest of the time the pigeons have plenty to eat. During molting they must have plenty and very rich feed to grow the new feathers.
@@FrankMcLaughlinPigeons got it. Thanks a lot.
thank you ❤
You're welcome 😊
@@FrankMcLaughlinPigeons Hello Frank, I have a question about the nutrition program for speed and medium distance competitions. Can it be followed in Morocco? You should know that the season for speed, medium and long distance races has a different date. We usually start the season in January and end in April or May. You know what the weather is like in this Months: Is it possible to follow your method or add some other grains to the mixture?
You can certainly apply this system in Morocco. It will work perfect in your country. I hope you are safe from the earth quake. That is so scary.

Superb sirr
Thank you!
Good honest video.
Would you feed young birds on this system and if so how long before the first race would you start on the depurative mix
Thanks 🏴
For old birds I put them on the barley mix several weeks before the first race to get the body weight down before training. I do not loft fly the old birds before I start training so I must make sure they are light and buoyant. For the young birds I have them on 50% barley when I want them to start exercising around the loft and keep them on 50% barley during training. I move to 80% barley about 10 days before the first young bird race.
Great video thanks
Wanted to ask how would you adjust feed for longer races up to 900km (560 miles)
We start in May and looking forward to the new season
I will be doing a Part 2 on Feeding for Long Distance and then Part 3 on Feeding young birds. I will make Part 2 in about a week. Plan to do a Live Stream on Sunday.

@@FrankMcLaughlinPigeons Great news, Frank. Looking forward to watching the long distance edition. It is a dangerous border between being light to race well and being too light and running out of fuel(fat) and drop on the fields.
Good day sir! how many times a week do you bathe them on derby race day? and what day?
Once a week and is plenty but I am not consistent and most likely monthly. My birds can go out in open flight pens and love the rain.
Thank you sir
Most grain dealers can order good barley.

sir frank I know that the carbohydrates are the first energy source of the bird .How many hours of flight untill the pigeons use stored fat?
No much has been done on studying this. No so set that they burn carbs then fats. They do not need much fat to fly many hours.
been following all your video hoping this will also work here in the Philippines.. thanks
You should do great. Most areas use systems that everyone else uses so you may shake up the competitors by doing things a little different.

Hi, thank you for your videos. Your simplified approach of racing pigeons actually makes a HUGE DIFFERENCE. And i would like to ask, How much grams r u feeding ur racing pigeons per day?

Sirr,We race in winter season.Barley is cold in nature...can we use 80 percent barley in winter season.
I start racing in April and it is cold and damp that time of year in Massachusetts. The barley mix should be just fine. What country do you live in?
Iam Henry from South Africa
Hi Henry, Hope you enjoyed and got some useful information.
Thank for sharing your knowledge Mr. Frank. Where do you get the VL-depure here in the US?
I buy from Global Pigeon Supply out of New York because they deliver to me.
So if I got this rite do u mix the barley with the depurative ?
I am sorry for the confusion. I either use the Depure from Versele Laga or mix 80% barley and 20% breeder mix like Champion.
thanks a lot but i have a question how much time you train your birds arround the loft and how much you feed them
For old birds I put them on the barley mix several weeks before the first race to get the body weight down before training.
Hi Frank. You didn’t say how much to feed the light mix. Thanks mate.

If you are new please feed once a day until they leave a small handful of barley. You cannot make a mistake on feeding if you feed the race team once a day until they leave a few bits of barley.

Sir what time eat pigeon once a day if 4pm to 5pm basketing pigeon in club race?
If you are basketing at that time feed as early in the day as possible. I suggest if you are able to also feed a very small amount about 12 noon so they may drink a little more water.

Thank you Sir for your information. I'm new in pigeon racing just started. I understand every word you said. My only concern how much do you feed per bird? Let's I have 16 birds to learn and understand the sport. I think that is important to me as a new comer.
Hi Frank - which online website do you get your barley from? Thanks.
I have all my feed and most products and vaccines delivered by Global Pigeon Supply.
In south africa where I live we don't have versele laga.. Can I use any depuritive mix.. And barley.. And do I only feed them depuritive mix and barley
You can mix barley with a good breeder mix or feed depurative mix. Either is fine and will do great for racing.
Keep them coming....what feed and vitamins do u used when weaning
At weaning I give all the rich feeds the babies want. Usually mix Versele Laga Champion and Versele Laga Energy. You want them to pick through and eat all the small seeds they want. You never want to stress them by not giving them free choice and let them have what they want. I will put a cheap Tractor Supply Chicken Vitamin and Electrolyte in the water a few days a week right at weaning time. I make this very weak because this Chicken Vitamin is so strong. Plenty of grits and minerals again you want to keep them from getting stressed.
Thanks alot
Congrats 👏 on the last week
Nice to have a bit of luck now and again. Thank you!
I think I already make like 3 of my youngsters stress because they not eating alot do u know what I can used at this point
Do you treat young birds and old birds the same with your feed program
Very similar. I will do Part 2 which is Feeding for Long Distance and then Part 3 which will be feeding young birds.
When are you going to do part 3 ...I'm 2 weeks away from young birds Frank
What if I use sunflower instead of barley
Good day sir on short races can I still use barley and Caseart mix of Van Robeays on basket day thanks
You can feed the Caseart Depurative day of shipping. The other Casaert mix is too rich or short distance.

Hi sir its okay 1 day eat for 150km to 600km race and what time sir eat pigeon?
I feed in the morning but you can feed around your schedule. If once a day in the afternoon works better for you that is just great.
Try to round on some depurative. This is best to race on.
